Even a little bit of sliding starts to wear your upholstery out. I use them just for that reason. Also helps with door dings.

@@RobMotive I agree though, they aren't needed. Especially for a stock height truck. I will remove mine as soon as the little one can get in without them. Or I might just get sliders that are actually functional and can help with the step in for little legs.

I have a set of Predator Steps on my 2021 TRD Sport and they were on the vehicle when I bought it. They definitely look good but they are not very functional. I use them to enter the truck but you have to be careful to step up on that little step. They are solid steel so they will protect your vehicle during a high break over maneuver while off-road. However, the step itself is vulnerable. I have slid over rocks with them using extreme care but I’ve seen people rip them off. A lot of people just cut them off and use the rail for protection. It is very difficult to get your foot just right to use them to access my roof rack or wipe down the top of the roof after washing my truck. That said, I would never buy them again and would insist that the dealer remove them if they come on my future trucks. Cuz I ain’t paying for them.

A month ago I bought a 2022 Tacoma off road with those exact steps .. On day two of owning my Tacoma we went off roading .. at mile two I lost the front passenger step and at mile 3 I crushed the drivers side front. Day three at the welding shop and used a die grinder and removed the steps and covered the running boards with bed liner .. now they work!

That’s one thing we differ on. I think trucks look better with Nerf Bars. Maybe not the factory older looking steps but Nurf bars really make them look sporty in my opinion. But hey that’s why they make all different kinds because we don’t all have to same tastes. 👍

I had running boards on my 06 Ridgeline that I drove for 11 years, and the thing that I hated most was that in bad weather-wet or snowy- was that every time I got out of the truck, my legs would rub against them and my clothes would get dirtier than hell. I don’t miss them at all on my ‘16 Taco. I’m glad it’s naked. I’m 5’7. Mines got a 3 inch leveling kit also.

Predator steps will get damaged if you do some mild off-roading, the regular ones look better and are a little more tucked up and out of the way. The only time I use mine is when I wash the roof. Also if you got a mild t-bone collision, they might help you a little.

I’ve got the OEM cast aluminum running boards on mine, the predator steps for me, are too far forward ... if they were back about 8” they’d be perfect. The nice thing about the running boards is the platform allows me to wash the roof and reach the entire windshield without having to get out a step stool/ladder.

Hey Rob your truck is looking great! I’m 5’11” and find th side steps in my way most of the time. That being said, they are nice for smaller people to use. But half the ones I see on other vehicles are bent and once that happens they look terrible. If I were to put them on my truck I would go with the Amp retractable ones that have lighting for the night use. You can also turn them on and off. They suck up pass the frame and out of the way so they won’t get bent that easily. A little pricey though! Anyway like the video maybe the Amp running can be your next upgrade 😛

I have never use it because there is no need for them to get in but the boards are a big obstacle to get out. Have to jump oven them on the ground. I know it’s a very subjective matter, but I feel that lifted or not, no side steps ever ever. Use real rock rails if you are going off road, but it defeats the purpose of adding height by then putting extra edges and metal in the way if you add it back with steps. I’m 5’ 7” and have a lifted Tundra and lifted 4Runner and my wife and I get in and out of both fine using either the grab handle or the steering wheel. My 7 yr. old daughter can hop up fine too using a grab strap. My wife also hates them as they hit the back of her pants when getting it and out at work. If you pull in to my local off road shop with a lifted truck and side steps, you better be prepared for them to be getting the wrenches out immediately to remove them.

RobMotive , Great question and here’s my answer. My brother has now had them for 9 years on his Ram. He has them in sub freezing temps all the time, he lives in Montana, where it gets very cold at times. Never an issue. That’s why I decided to go that route myself. They are proven. And I love the lock feature, when you want to wash them, just deploy them out apply light weight on them with your foot and close the door. They stay down for you to wash. Then just open your door to reset and they retract back up into the storage position. It would be a great Mod video too, you know, for the channel! 👍🏻

    • @RobMotive

The steps/boards are not just for getting in and out - and while "I don't need them" may be true, my elderly mother with a bad hip certainly would find them helpful when we're going someplace together in the Tacoma. Customization to myself is fine, but accommodation of the other people in my life is also something to consider. The boards are much more helpful when putting kayaks or other gear up on the roof and securing them there. Without boards, you have to open all the doors, and get up and down and walk around those doors while tensioning your straps, etc. And the flat boards are much better for this than the specific step-style.
