  • Hi guys! Today we take a look at some hardware to play emulators on. The PS vita is by far the best option for 2018 for the money. The henkaku hack has breathed new life into this system and is becoming super popular again. Grab one for yourself with firmware 3.60 or less and you will have hit the jackpot. Let me know if you want a tutorial showing how to hack it and I will gladly do so. Follow my rom hack play through if you’re new to the channel and I hope to see you again!

    September 2019: You can hack up to 3.72. Look for Trinity. You can use that to downgrade if you want. As for Android, you can run a lot more on a Galaxy S9 or later. You can use multiple bluetooth controllers to do multiplayer with one mobile device. The down side is carrying a controller around. This is why I use my Vita more.

    I agree, I was about to buy the psp go but for around the same price I could just buy a vita. I ended up getting a 3.65 vita but I'm not worried because you can still run home-brew on it and the henkaku hack will be released on July 1st for all firmware versions after 3.60.

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад +3

      theshapex you’re right! I should have added that but at the end. But you’re lucky, because you can buy pretty much any color vita above 3.60 for cheap. Henkaku is also extremely easy to install. I feel you’re going to really enjoy it.
      I’ll be releasing a video on the Retrostone once mine gets delivered. Not as cheap as a vita but it’s going to be one of the best handheld emulators that gives the feel of a gameboy. They should ship at the end of the month and the video will be up like literally that same day.

    • @theshapex
      @theshapex 6 лет назад +1

      Nice, I remember seeing a prototype on eta prime's channel and it looks very cool. I was interested in the MGSP portable game system too for retro gaming.

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад

      Yeah he was like the only person able to review that prototype. He also has proper equipment for reviewing things unlike me haha. But I’ll try to improve the quality the best I can before it gets here.
      The MGSP also looks like a great option, has too many buttons for what I would use these for though. I also think for the price the vita has a better advantage over these other options because of how nice the screen is. When you play a GBA game on the vita and can fill almost the whole screen without distorting the aspect ratio it’s crazy.

    • @theshapex
      @theshapex 6 лет назад

      Exactly, I was thinking the same, that vita screen especially with an oled panel are hard to beat.

    I've been in the modding and emulation scene for awhile. I will completely agree that a Vita is definitely the way to go. I've modded almost everything that could be modded that I own. The PSP was my favorite handheld device before my Vita. I bought mine already modded for $70 with a 64gb card. The guy definitely hooked me up. The Switch is a 'good-A' system to hack due to its hardware that modders/hackers appreciate, but apparently Nintendo with their stupid practices it makes the Switch just unhackable due to their bans and modified updates; They don't care about video game preservation (or they don't know what they're doing), so they take down ROM sites that it forced the best ROM site, Emuparadise to shut down for legal reasons- but not from Nintendo, luckily.
      But, yeah, go towards the PSVita or the PSP if you can. They're pricey, but it's worth than spending a $1000 collection of retro games, which kind of think of it, I'm scared that retro gaming prices are going high due to Nintendo's stupidity...

    When/if the vita gets a perfectly running ds emulator is when I will start caring about the vita again. I bought mine recently (aqua blue japan import), only to mod it but sadly I kinda lost interest in it it’s just a okay console and I can emulate perfectly on my ‘17 mbp touchbar or my iPhone but I bought the vita because of the aqua blue (that color is really good, and because latest firmware became hackable and because it was an actual controller and not just keyboard and virtual buttons) however last time I used retroarch gba it is shit, one of the cores completely crashes and the other one is slow and I don’t want to use that mgba as it seems like it sucks ass at having freedom of where I can put my roms folders or else it backs me out of the app. Once the switch gets even better at homebrew and more ports it will take the vita in the best portable emulator, in my opinion. I kept the buttons In the japan default because it matches Nintendo’s 3ds buttons like on my n3ds and it’s nice to have the matching buttons since I’m just using it to play nintendo consoles 🤣🤔.

    • @thechemist1049

      You have some valid points, here is my take on most of them:
      1: I argue that a MBP (or any laptop in most cases) while better at emulation due to power, is not a good option due to portability and cost relative to the vita. The iPhone (I have the X) is also a great option (as are android phones) but again they cost much more. They also lack physical buttons. You could bring up the Sony Xperia play but at the end of the day that’s basically the psp go which I still think isn’t a better option due to screen quality.
      2: You have total control of how roms are organized for mGBA. I have mine arranged a specific way because I like to have sub folders but you don’t even have to have them in a folder. Also the emulator remembers what area of memory you accessed last so you you don’t even really have to navigate to where they are but just the first time.
      3: I do agree retroarch isn’t very well optimized for the vita, especially for gbc and gba. But again you don’t have to use it for those, you can use mGBA or gpsp kai like another person commented works better for him, which would be familiar to you if you’ve emulated on a psp go before.
      4: I have the switch on firmware 1.0 I do think it’s only a matter of time before it gets a software hack (there’s even examples of Pokémon Crystal already running on it while the audio still isn’t the best yet) but I don’t think the switch is as comfortable to hold while playing (even though that’s subjective I do admit) but again I bring up the cost of the vita vs the switch. I also get significantly better battery life with my vita.
      5: I think if you bought the vita with the intention of emulating a DS on a screen with more horizontal screen real estate than vertical, then that really wasn’t thought out too much as I’m not sure how that would work unless they were side by side instead of vertically stacked.
      You brought up some really good points and I’m glad people in the comments are getting to see some of the downsides as well as the positives as I obviously didn’t point out some of these in my video.

      If you want to play DS, the DSi is the best option. Easily soft hackable and great, great hardware. I have two that I picked up for like $24 each at a Book Off in San Diego, and you can find them on Amazon for like $35. Can't stress enough how nice the hardware feels, the 3DS was actually a slight step backwards in build quality for me.

      @thechemist1049  5 лет назад +3

      gus051 yeah idk where you’re looking but don’t spend $200 on one, definitely get a switch at that point. I got mine for $80, and at that price I would still choose the vita over the switch. But OpenGL support just got added to the switch last week so now emulation on it can utilize both the cpu and gpu and it’s emulation ability sky rocketed. It now runs Pokémon stadium on the N64 at perfect frames for me. I still like my vita more but if you’re only finding them for $200 for some reason then definitely save for a switch. There’s still some near me for around $80 but they’re local, not on places like eBay. To be open with you though, the switch has the added annoyance that you have to stay in airplane mode with WiFi turned off whenever you can due to the risk of being banned.

    • @gus051
      @gus051 5 лет назад

      The Chemist I looked them up on eBay and that’s the price they’re going for. I was shocked they’re still going for that much since the vita came out ages ago but yeah at $80 I’d definitely get it without thinking twice.

      @thechemist1049  5 лет назад

      TheAnonapersons yeah when I picked mine up for $80 locally while they were still in production, now that they’ve stopped being produced people are charging more for them since I made this video. Especially the colored 2000 models like the aqua blue one. But now that the downgrader has been released you can pick up a model that’s above 3.60 and downgrade it so if you see a cheaper one in good condition on a higher firmware look up the downgrader. I still personally use my vita over my switch even though I have both hacked but the switch can play way more emulators despite its worse battery life and slightly awkward ergonomics so I think that would be the better choice for most people the closer you get to being above $200.

      sonicblast19 this is true. H-Encore allows all firmware versions to be opened now. 3.67 and 3.68 can't be enso'd though. Only small downside.

      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад

      It is! H-encore was really only a rumor when I made this video but it’s awesome that it’s out now. Especially for people who want colored vitas as those were almost impossible to find on 3.60 or below. However finding a 3.65 vita is very easy and that one can be enso’d.
      The H-encore hack is also a little more involved but still nothing crazy. Definitely worth it.

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад +1

      George Giannoulis yeah when this video was released there only rumors of anything over 3.60 getting an exploit. The 3.68 exploit was released quite a while after this video was made. You can now exploit all firmwares though. But using a dns to get to 3.60 if you have something lower is still the best and easiest method.

      is it worth paying 150euro for ps vita slim used not scrached + 64gb official memory card used deal? I m trying to find cheap offers.
      3.68 version

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад +1

      George Giannoulis well I definitely don’t want to tell people what to do with that amount of money because each person is different but I will recommend some things first.
      I would thoroughly watch the videos and read the articles for the 3.68 exploit. I think it’s quite easy but people have different amount of comfort with computers so it may not be that way for others.
      I also was a person who was looking for a portable emulation solution for an extremely long time and this came along. I think this is the best option. Almost solely for the screen but everything as a whole about it is nice. I paid $80 US for mine and then I think it was an additional $15 US for a 16gb card. Which is plenty of storage if emulators is what you’ll use it for. If there aren’t many options near you and your opinions align with mine I still think it’s worth it but I would shop around first as that is a tad higher than I would expect.

      Earl Crisostomo are you asking if the only thing you need is a vita + a proprietary as card? If that’s your question that’s all you need! You’ll need an FTP software but there’s one called FileZilla and it’s a free download and supported in both Mac and Windows

    • @earlcrisostomo185
      @earlcrisostomo185 6 лет назад

      The Chemist yeah thats the one. I was a bit confused at first cause i saw some people using sd cards with adaptors to be put in the cartridge slot and i thought it is a must. So a vita + orig vita mem card will do. Thanks bro appreciate it.

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад

      Earl Crisostomo yeah they were still available used at GameStop around the time I made this. I can make a video explaining how but honestly there are so many people who have good tutorials I don’t feel many people would find mine. It’s way easier though if you’re firmware 3.60 or under. If not you have to use a new method that’s still doable just more involved. You also don’t need a large sd card either, roms are super small in size. Hope you get everything up and running!

      Iriamu I have a 16gb because that’s all I could find at my local GameStop when I first got this. But roms are extremely small in size. A 4 or 8 gb would be more than enough for any games you wanted. They would hold thousands

      Iriamu yeah they have some awesome looking colors that I may try to upgrade to in the future. And yeah you can put emulators on any firmware now too which makes it way easier. I also still think a 16gb size card would be plenty but if you find a good deal or want more do what is best for you. And I appreciate it! I usually aim for two videos a week but I recently started a new job and it’s awesome but has been quite mentally demanding so I’ve been really slow lately. There’s tons more content coming though. what about the gpd xd

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  6 лет назад +4

      GamingRockFTW the gpd xd is an awesome price of tech, but there are several reasons I think the os vita is a better option. A main one is because mainly it’s about 1/3 the cost. That, and the gpd xd has just way more computing than you really need for basic emulating needs. However, if a budget isn’t really something you’re considering it’s an awesome option. It costs about as much as a PS4 though so I think it’s a little over priced. I also think the ps vita has better ergonomics.
      I think if I had that type of budget I would be getting a switch and patiently waiting for emulators. But I also address that in my video too why I think the vita is an awesome option for emulating compared to the switch. Usually you lose the ability to update software when you get access to emulators on the switch so I think it’s better to have the vita and dedicate it to emulation. But that’s just my opinion haha XD

    can you put psp isos on your vita ?

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  5 лет назад +1

      Maguin Alejandro there’s no need! You can just install adrenaline. It modifies the official psp emulator for the vita and makes it run the 6.61 CFW for the psp. Once you’ve installed that, you can boot into a fully hacked psp and run eboot files of PS1 games and any psp game natively. As well as the gPSP kai gba emulator as well. Definitely worth a look since the psp and PS1 games will run natively at perfect speed. It’s extremely easy to install.

      @@thechemist1049 damn I love that.. I think I really wanna get a vita now.. do I have to consider something when looking for used vitas ? like firmware or something for jailbreaking ?

    • @thechemist1049
      @thechemist1049  5 лет назад +1

      Maguin Alejandro well when I made this video you definitely had to. However, as of literally today, you can hack all firmwares since 3.70’s exploit was just now released. What you can do with all other firmwares is hack with the exploit called H-encore and use another exploit called Moduro to downgrade to 3.60. If you can find a 3.65 or below somewhere locally to you, you’ll have an easier and quicker time hacking. But if you can’t and can only get a reasonably priced one off eBay, if you’re comfortable following hacking guides for H-encore, I’d get any firmware off there. Check out the H-encore guide first and look at the sidebar at r/VitaHacks on reddit if you’re new to this stuff. I still wholeheartedly recommend the vita as my favorite handheld emulator. I have a hacked switch, 3DS, an R4 card for a DSI, a backlit GBA with a flashcart, and even a custom HaihaiSB GB102 (a video of that one will be coming very soon) and the vita is the only one I pick up.
      If you manage to get one of these, u/xCorra on reddit made a 3D printed dock with a raspberry pi inside that docks your vita and connects it to your tv, essentially making it work like a switch. Then you can install the DS4Vita exploit and connect a PS4 controller to it. Mine will be here in August and I will for sure post a video when it arrives.
