Love LOVE my Vita. Fantastic handheld for retro consoles: amazing built-in controls (especially that dpad), lovely screen, and perfect form factor! Smartphone + Bluetooth controller will never match it. And I have experience in that realm.
@@Pixii420 moded psp can run all those game you mentioned except 3ds game, so just like i said, with modded vita, you're basically had a moded psp run in your vita system through adrenaline app, so yeah it can run all of those too.. oh did i mention vita can also run all 3d era of GTA games, bully, and now start to run android base game?
Save yourself some money by not buying a PSP and going with a Vita instead. The Vita has all the benefits of the PSP because of Adrenaline along with all of its own software and added horsepower. It takes a bit more work to get it up and running, but it's well worth the effort.
Adrenaline might be the best emulator to exist. For the sole fact that it can emulate a psp so good that the emulator is actually better than the real thing and to make matters worse its on a PS VITA
@@Darius_Cyrus you can’t run vita software on a PSP. Meanwhile, the Vita can run al the PSP software. It also has a bigger and better quality screen (both models) along with better controls. Why buy both? Like I said, save yourself some money.
@nunya baznus its still there though, if you wanna play those specific games then the 3ds is better, I think they are both great honestly, depending on what kinda games you prefer you can get either one
This "pseudo scanline" effect, coupled with the screen that has 240 lines in height are what makes my New 3DS XL my primary retro emulation machine. The 3DS (not 2DS) screen is actually 800x240 in resolution, but has pixels that are 2x thinner in width than they are in height, which makes vertical gaps of separate pixels not as noticeable in 2D mode. And that is what creates this scanlines effect - the contrast between wider horizontal gaps and narrower, almost invisible vertical gaps. And the 240p resolution just makes all those retro games from 8-16 bit Nintendos and Segas pixel-perfect. Beautiful.
@@EdyStauch That's because you use the wrong emulator. Learn RetroArch, and run your games with Snes9x 2005 Plus core. If still slow - try the regular 2005 one. I used to play a lot of SNES games on my Vita until I got a New 3DS XL.
3ds and vita don't really compete in my book, they go side to side. So get both if you can - you can't really emulate ds/3ds to be as good as original hardware and with vita you get amazing accessibility and both consoles have an enormous library of original games.
agree, like neither share much of the same games, 3ds is FAR superior in that aspect and i love the 3d. But you cannot ignore the hardware and that sweet OLED of the vita
I don't have a 3DS, but after seeing the Homebrew/Modding scene for it.. I can say that the 3DS and the Vita are basically 2 Sides of the Same coin. They Got lots in common
Owner of these 3 consoles, and yes I agree that PS Vita is the best of the 3. The homebrew scene is just spectacular. 2021 and still very much active and alive.
I think the Vita's library really depends on if you're a heavy JRPG fan or not. Cause while good non-JRPG games can be on the rarer side (which even still are quite common if you just dig a little), the VITA really shines on the JRPG and Visual Novel Spectrum. There's tons of great titles. Also, JP sellers sell VITA's in remarkably amazing conditions for how old the console is so I think ~150 bucks is actually pretty justified.
That goes for all three tbh, the 3ds has a solid library but its lacking in variety, outside of mario and zelda its lacking in non turn-based games. Vita has a small but incredible selection of shooters and fighting games.
I understand why people prefer the PS Vita and 3DS, but the PSP is my favourite... Super portable, good battery, comfortable, nice screen (on the 2000, 3000 and GO at least) also it's super cheap, and very easy to do multiplayer...
You forgot about the amazing TWLoader 3DS homebrew that can play pretty much all DS roms and homebrew right from the SD Card without a flashcart! Nice video besides that, very nice choice of games to show off for the vita too!
He forgot a lot of things.. But what the heck does he mean when he says “3ds games are hard to find”? You just need to scan a QR code and that’s it. It’s not hard at all, actually it’s the simplest way to get games out of the three sistems.
I sold my Switch Lite to buy a Vita. Even at Vita’a scarcity price nowadays, Nintendo asking full price for games even three year after launch was way steeper to me.
It's true man, better to buy into the Vita now. It'll only get more expensive and a good amount of the switch ports also came out on Vita. It's an amazing handheld
Got my hands on PSP, VIta and new 3DS XL with dual IPS just before the prices started skyrocket. All of them modded for homebrew. 3ds is so great for playing old nintendo titles through VC injection, vita have a increasingly growing porting scene merging after its latest KYU HEN contest which is amazing to see.
I am getting a normal old 3ds today, kind of cheap, i had one before but i sold it before modding, got it before the prices went up for 40 dollars on ebay with 3 day shipping.. it was insane
That's lucky, I've been wanting this new 3ds for a while now and decided to get it while the prices are high and peoppe are demanding too much. I spent a lot on mine but it was open box new condition. For the price I bought it for, never gonma sell it and keep it in a clear case always.
Got myself the 3ds, I have the most nostalgia for the Pokémon games I played on my ds, and the dual screens isn't something so easily recreated on the psp/psvita.
@@kevinfromsales9445 no, 200% accurate. Not just is it accurate but it also has added specs on top of the identical look, it’s like they pulled a Nintendo and put the psp INSIDE OF THE VITA
@@kevinfromsales9445 It's pretty good. There are only a handful of games that are a little wonky and require using RetroArch over Adrenaline, but the vast majority of PS1, PSP and Vita games can be played with no real hassle.
I have owned all three and I currently still own Vita and my 2DS. My Vita gets far more play due to the modding community. Even the GTA Trilogy and Bully were added to the console. I also love how Adrenaline adds PSP to the Vita and so it becomes two consoles in one. Vita can also play PS1 games very easily. I love 2DS/3DS, but I'd say Vita is better. PSP games look and play great on Vita with the bigger and better screen and dual analog sticks. The SD adapter is a must for Vita when modded. The proprietary memory cards were garbage and are what killed the console. My Vita currently has a 256 GB card.
As someone with all 3 and a modern smart phone, I'd rather use any dedicated handheld over a smart phone. A lot of people who share this opinion use the 'dedicated controls' argument, but as you mentioned there are a lot of controller options for phones that work great. The issue is that I need my phone for other things. I'm constantly getting messages, notifications, emails, and sometimes phone calls which would disrupt my gaming sessions. And beyond that, while I'm out, gaming on my phone runs the risk of killing my battery which could make me miss important calls or texts. That's why dedicated handhelds are so important, for emulation and otherwise. And I'm not about to drop $1000+ on a second phone lol.
But if you wait a year or two, you can get last year's or two years ago's flagship for like $200 or maybe less on those swap sites, ebay, fb marketplace, etc... Then theyre the most cost effective choice for performance, I feel
@@bagelbytes69420 probably, yeah. More than $200 for anything decent for sure, but less than $1000. Still would rather pocket a portable over a another phone + a physical add on needed to run it.
Trying to have all in 1 device (cellphone) sucks honestly. I'd much rather have dedicated hardware that can fulfill its purpose so that I can actually use my phone as a phone when I need to. Not to mention a phone normally can't do what dedicated hardware can to their best capabilities (dslr cam, desktop/laptop) so i'd much rather get a cheap phone to make calls and listen to music, and use the extra money to buy a good tablet or laptop.
Fun fact, unless you buy a controller which is probably 50 dollars, playing games on your phone can be uncomfortable due to no physical buttons, and handhelds have buttons and joysticks MEANT to be great. Go with the cheaper option!
Another aspect is if you're using your phone for a lot of portable gaming, that cuts into your battery life and you may not have much when you need it. Also someone calling you can interrupt your game session at critical moments.
There's so much more you can do with the 3DS: Custom themes, playing DS ROMs from the SD card, dumping 3DS games from the cartridge to the SD card, Injecting ROMS so they play from the systems native emulators and so they appear on the main screen and installing custom homescreen badges is just scratching the surface of the capabilities of a hacked 3DS. I love mine and I've hacked a few of my friends' 3DS' after I told them what you could do.
same the library is just too good to pass up imo. The only weakness it has is its power, but even that is improving as people finally make ps1 games play decent
@@filsdepierre474 PS Vitas library doesn't even come close to matching the quality of the 3DS' imo which is the only reason I'd go for a 3DS above a vita
Yup the 3ds is like three handhelds combined into one and has such a vast amount of quality titles when stacked against the psp and vita its insane. It can handle a good amount of emulators, and recent retroarch pcsx rearmed nightly builds has gotten really good where its actually become a decent way to play ps1 games on it (not as good as psp/vita but good enough). The 3ds homebrew scene isn't as godlike as the vita tho, but you still get cool stuff here and there, like mario 64, half life and gta3 ports that are all p playable so I'm happy lol
@@helenhomunculus5044 "3ds is like three handhelds combined into one" And the Vita is 2 handhelds and one console combined into one, not including stuff involving modding.
The 3DS is probably your best option if you want to play strictly Nintendo games. It is backwards compatible with DS cartridges and GBA roms (through injection), and has GBC/GB emulators that can have roms injected in with PC software. In terms of emulation, the 3DS can handle n64 and PSX fairly well on a few select titles. Although, if you're playing PSX games, you probably want to use a PSP or Vita anyway. Vita has great utility as a PS4 controller, but the PSP is much easier to find if you don't live in Japan. The Vita does make the PSP redundant and actually enhances games that use the D-Pad as a camera, but the PSP is a lot more straightforward to use.
I really love my hacked PlayStation Vita. It can play Ps1, Psp, Ps Vita, Nintendo 64, Game boy Advance, Game Boy Colour, etc. It is incredible to go from a game like Pokemon Yellow to a game like Uncharted Gold Abyss.
Modding the Vita was one of the toughest thing ive ever had to do in my life. The sheer amount of information id had to pack into my brain for 1 week was so stressful. At the end of that week i had enso on bootup, adrenaline (psp), and Sd2vita.
I thought the Vita was easier. Sitting in my dresser on 3.50. DNS settings for update to 3.60. Henkaku XYZ ? Ready for enable homebrew in settings. Installing the vpks like adrenaline and enso 1.1 is the easy part is the easy part using molecular shell or Vita shell. 3ds is harder to me.
For me, PS VITA modded is my best console mod so far because we can get advantages that non-mod PS VITA does not have without losing its essential features, for example we can still hunt for trophies, play multiplayer, buy games on the PS Store, and still be able to play physical games on modded PS VITA.
I like having a Vita, but I only ever use it for Remote Play with my PS4. Its exclusive library doesn't excite me. Everything else it can do, a PSP does just as good, sometimes better.
I think one other reason people would mod these rather than emulating on a mid end android device is simply because of the hardware feel to it. I still haven't found any android controller that is comparable to actual game console manufacturer. I think the closest one was the stuff from 8bitdo, but they still use bluetooth to connect to android, and not exactly especially an android controller (also not compact if you're aiming for the newer models)
I've owned all three, I've got a switch and a few retro specific handhelds and I still say the vita comes out on top. I love the OLED screen in the original but the only major flaw I've found is that I wish there were some on board drive space. If you're modding a vita the OLED screen is nicer but the trade off is that you have to shell out for a memory card to have space on board for hacking utilities, etc. Whereas the newer models come with (I believe) 2gb which gets you by until you do the sd2vita mod.
You don't have to buy the expensive proprietary Sony Vita Memory Cards. If you hack your Vita, you can use SD2Vita and a Micro SD card 128 GB for like 30 bucks total. You do need an initial song memory card to hack it though
i've seen 8gig cards on ebay for like $18 bucks. It is a knock on the psvita's value, which is already kinda low comparatively, but isn't terrible. You can also just resell the card once you get SD2Vita and enso running
One thing I have to say for longevity sake I was absolutely shocked at how easy it is to work on the PS Vita, replacing almost any part is fairly simple, I think that’s really important for whatever console you’re going to mod because you’re probably gonna wanna replace batteries potentially the screen down the line or the joysticks, and as of right now, the PS Vita is really easy to do that with! Also, if you do tear a ribbon cable they’re fairly easy to find online or from a donor unit
I love my modded 3ds! I’m just saying while yes the ps vita and psp are cool, a lot of emulators have a hard time trying to simulate the dual screens of a ds system. So overall the 3ds is better in the long run cause those games will become extremely hard to emulate in the future.
Everything is pretty well emulated on PC. Same thing with smartphones. We aren’t comparing those obviously. However what the OP is considering is the immersive experience. The spacing between screens is always messed up and using buttons on a touch screen as well as the tough screen itself feels clunky. People use modded consoles for the sake of preserving the experience. Otherwise this video wouldn’t exist and we would all be using computers and cell phones. Preserving authenticity is more difficult for DS and 3DS as a result of the dual screen. That’s what the OP is saying.
first off your wrong about the screen spacing because it's customizable. also using a mouse isn't a big deal and most all in ones have touch screens now
It's only better for the people who want to play DS games, for people who want to play PS1, N64, PSP which the 3ds can't play then the Vita is "better".
Also 3ds and DS emulation is brainlessly easy, I can emulate the DS and 3DS on my PC and even on my Phone effortlessly so it's just pointless for me to get a 3ds since i can emulate it anyways, meanwhile the Vita is still not able to be emulated which makes it much more unique
Your comment about just using a modern smartphone blew me away. Thanks. I had just overlooked that possibility and have spent all day researching different handhelds.
I have the PSP 1000 and the 3ds xl and 2ds. I have all of them modded and I love all of them. The PSP is the one I have the most nostalgia for since I got it when they were still being sold new and I love it. I always loved the fact that it was the only portable device on the market with a spinning disc drive. I always thought the UMD was the physical media of the future. It's okay that I was wrong but the world has changed a ton since I first started playing with the PSP and I still think it's an awesome console even by today's standards. I would totally get the Vita if I had the money for it just because I see it as an upgraded PSP. I still prefer playing games on my PSP over playing them on my phone
its important to note that you can get a Japanese vita, imported, for MUCH cheaper than a US one. It is region free so you can still play US games as well as any other region!
I have the PSP and Vita. Honestly, just the vita modded is amazing as you can play PSP and PS1 games on it as well, and with the dual joysticks and nice screen it’s just a great experience
@@akpokemon he’s basically saying compared to these 3 consoles the switch is massive and barely portable. As someone who has all of these the switch is goddamn huge it actually is kinda uncomfortable now
I just buy 3ds with my first pay. Have seen my friends playing it on my highschool days, but never have enough money to buy one. Well, now is time to saving for PS Vita in the future. Hope the price would go down
Such a great take! As the proud owner of a modded Vita I can without a doubt say it's the most pleasure I've gotten out of a modded system (And I've been around the block). I did however find that it was one of the hardest ones to mod especially in the early days, and if you're not technically inclined the PSP is a much better alternative!
I lived in Japan for 2 years and there's this store called Hard off that sold Ps Vita s like they where trying to get rid of. I bought, modded and resold like 20 of them. I used the game cartridge and card mod for 120GB and 64GB SD cards. Also it has the PKG app ;) I kept the blue Vita and a extremely rare Yellow and black vita
Is it comfortable to hold and to control? I own two 3000 models, which are great, but I've been thinking about getting a PSP Go lately because of its smaller form factor.
It’s true I payed around 155 bucks for my ps vita is pretty good condition everything worked came with a charger and was in the box It’s the 1000 model too so yess
when you mod your VITA, not only do you have power to play PSP/PS1 videogames, you are able to overclock the system, reduce resolution and therefore play many amazing games such as Jak and Daxter, Borderlands 2, Resident Evil, Minecraft etc. with pretty much a few or zero issues. It is definitely a must have and I am glad I got my hands on it in 2016. The online is still working in some games like Rayman Legends or Helldivers! When it comes to game ports on VITA, it is amazing that many games can now be played on VITA - it's crazy that Sonic Mania is now playable on PS VITA with only a few issues and the games still gets updates - this retro gem is definitely a good thing to have on a go!
Modding portable consols really brings a lot of people the games they miss the the consoles came out, and i know that modding was there when the consoles came out, but throught the years, right now in 2024 i have seen modding explode, people are buying consoles left and right ir even fixing their old consols that have been just store in the attick, and even more with emulation going faster and stronger than before and how good phones are easy to buy well just emulate almost every single console, or in a decent computer. This videos was amazing and i enjoy it a lot, thanx a lot man.
I got 3 Vitas on Ebay for $120 each and gave them to 3 friends with a small list of rules. If you get a Japanese model the aren't that expensive (depending on the color you choose)
@@GameHeadNes I got the 3 like 2 years ago, my first one was like 2.5 years ago, I got a second, and third for myself not long after My 1st one was about $200 on Amazon (that was a mistake) My 2nd one was about $130 on Ebay for a 1000 model And $150 for my 3rd which is a black and red 2000 model (I paid extra cause I wanted the black and red one
One thing I'd like to mention about the Vita and 3DS is the difference in how backwards compatibility works on them. The Vita uses either an RGB OLED or IPS screen depending on whether you get a 1000 or 2000 model. Either one uses a standard RGB stripe sub-pixel layout which allows the Vita to display PSP games at 1:1 accuracy by perfectly scaling up the 480x272 image to the Vita's 960x544 screen. This makes the Vita an objectively better way to play PSP games because you don't need a separate PSP to play all of its software at their best. The 3DS uses a non-standard sub-pixel layout on its top screen that was needed to make the 3D effect work at its 5:3 aspect ratio. This screen also doesn't have 4x the resolution of the DS, so 1:1 scaling is unfortunately impossible. There is a "pixel perfect" mode but even this doesn't solve the issue because the colour reproduction still isn't great and the non-standard sub-pixel arrangement makes the gaps between pixels very noticeable when a single primary colour is displayed. The fact that the 3DS also has to pair its non-standard pixels just to kinda look like a normal LCD pixel also means that the 3DS technically scales DS games at a ratio of 1:2. The vast majority of 3DS systems also use TN screens. If buying new, it's a complete toss-up whether your 3DS will have TN or IPS screens. IPS screens are far less common and more expensive to buy used. For the reasons stated above, a DSi XL is the best way to play DS games as every single one was made with standard IPS screens at the correct resolution. No scaling needed. A modded DSi XL can run DS games, DSiWare, GBA games, ROM Hacks, Homebrew, and much more off of just an SD card. It's very easy to do and is so much better than playing DS games on a 3DS. In short, if you can afford a Vita, there's basically no reason to own a PSP. If you want the best way to play DS games, you will need a DSi XL. A 3DS simply won't cut it.
Totally agree with the dsi xl. Only issue I had, if you go the R4 route, is that it takes up to a 32gb SD card. Cost wise, I feel the PSP is cheaper Both have great games though
@@shadow3856 Flashcarts don't see much use in DSi modding since custom firmware is far superior. As for PSP pricing, yeah they're cheaper. But I've also seen plenty of Vitas in good condition going for only slightly more. I suppose it depends on where you live. And yeah, both have excellent game libraries.
@@Some-guy-on-the-internet sadly I've never found a cheap Vita and I've been looking for years 😅. Most common prices I've found are 40-60 for dsi xl, 30-50 for PSP, 100-130 for Vita (I think once I saw a Vita for 80, but it was on marketplace so debatable)
The Vita is definitely the overall best if you had to pick one: it’s got powerful hardware that allows it to emulate practically every retro console you’d ever want, including its direct predecessor, the PSP. However, the 3DS is still worth buying because there will likely never be a better console to play DS/3DS games on as the hardware is such an integral part of the games. The 3/DS library is full of titles that don’t work/feel good without a stylus, looks off on a single screen or, ironically, look worse outside of the native 240p display. Plus, it just has a lot of character; from the firmware badge system, the 3D gimmick or just the clamshell form factor that is a rarity in 2021. Unfortunately for the Vita, the Switch is likely to dethrone its niche as the prime emulation machine and with Vita having a sparse exclusive library, it may go back to being the console no one wants.
oh the vita absolutely has a niche following and community , the switch is very cool and i like mine, though the switch is fucking massive compared to the vita (granted the switch lite looks tempting for me to get and mod when i get arround to it) i wish sony would drop a competitor to the switch, it would be so cool to see a psvita2 or something that would just straight up be able to run at a power closer to a ps4 than the switch is. i doubt sony would just release a handheld console let alone one anywhere akin to a ps4 in power but it would be neat to see a high powered handheld i would kill for a handheld device that could straight up play/emulate the ps3 library though if not some ps4 games too. as the vita was great at ps1/2 and some 3 games that were ported.
I have a modded PSP GO which I carry every day for light gaming on the go and also use as a MP3 player since it does have Bluetooth and it pairs with my modern earphones so it works. Might get to modding my old Vita somewhere down the line since I only had like 3 games for it.
I wouldn’t recommend using an R4 for your DS. I read somewhere there’s a discrepancy with the voltage being incorrect for the cartridges and while it can still play, it’ll slowly damage your system overtime. Basically happened to my DSi causing it to not be able to boot up half the time. Current homebrew allows you to emulate DS games without a flashcart making it much safer and cheaper.
I have never heard of this before. I own 4 flash carts and damn near every 3ds/ ds ever made. So that's interesting. I should look into that more then.
Vita's can be easily found for under a $100 in the Philippines. I guess it's a steal if $150 is the usual asking price. By the way, the Vita is superior in every way to the PSP asides from ease of modding and price. You can even play every single PSP game on it. Just wanna throw that out there.
I had all three of these over the years and the one I really prefer is the Vita. I bought a Blue 1000 series from Japan recently and absolutely fell in love with it and was pretty simple to get up and running minus the Homebrew browser but was able to find a replacement browser for it.
About the Vita and 3ds, which is more comfortable to use for longer play sessions? Should i get some sorta Hand Grip for them? (I have a new 3ds, planning on buying a vita)
@@LennyQUMFIF With the Vita, it can feel a bit awkward to hold after a little while of gaming. I’d say get one, for me though I don’t game too often so the cost or the want for one is not on my priority list. But getting one will immensely help with long periods of gaming, the only issue I see with getting one is they can be expensive depending which one you buy, like the Nyko one.

Your video is exactly what I was looking for, a full comparison between the 3, normal and modded and also a suggestion on which one is the better if you don't have any. Thank you so much my friend! :)
For Steamdeck owners, I'd recommend the 3ds. Simply because the steamdeck can emulate every PSP game, but the 3ds games can only be properly played on their own device.
I just think the 3ds' own library gives it the edge over the other 2. there were never any games that made me want either of the playstation handhelds, unlike the 3ds.
@lucette5 I guess if you only like Nintendo... The PSP has many franchises... Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Street Fighter... And many more.
@@JJRol. Ya PSP has like everything you need... 3DS i only know this whacky Tekken 3D which looks like its from N64. Interessting and obscure. OG Ds on the other hand... well it has Anno (1701) thats quite cool. I wish it would run better emulated on the vita.
100% disagree. PSP go is the worst to own because of the form factor. After an hour, your hands starts to cramp. This is easy. 3ds = 3ds + DS Vita = Vita + Psp + Ps1
I got my vita for $40 dollars, I had to spend another $15 to fix the screen, now it looks like new, and I understand how lucky I was, most ain't under $200, I'm never selling my vita
I would go with a hacked 3DS. Since not only can it emulate many consoles, it's also the most comfortable at playing DS, and of course 3DS games with the double screen setup. Honestly, I always roll my eyes at people emulating DS on single screen hardware that doesn't really work well.
Some details that the video is missing when it comes to vita. First of all vita is great as a streaming device as well. It can stream play pc/ps3/ps4 games easily. You can either connect with on tv with a small gadget called ps tv or with its bluetooth via pc. You can also as a hacked console, install a plugin that allows you to use a ps4 controller. Vita as a handheld device is a godsend gift but we all know how sony wrongfully neglected it. Btw vita slim might not have a beautiful OLED screen, but the LCD screen is pretty great and compared to oled vita, slim has a microUSB port and not a dedicated cable making charging and file transfer easier, its lighter(its plastics might feel a bit cheaper, but vita slim is just as sturdy) and has 1gb of internal memory that allows you to hack it without the need of buying a vita memory card. Finally vita Oled screens tend to lose their color fidelity over time. Lots of used oled vita screens now start showing less depth when it comes to black colors when tested. My advice is to go for a vita slim
I loved modding the psp. Not only got all three versions of the original As well as the GO, but I even managed to get a 256GB SD card to work in my PSP 3000 unit. I did recently get into the 3DS and 2DS, but they are indeed expensive and finding an AMERICAN model is stupid hard for some reason. I’ve had to get Japanese models that have been modded to get rid of the region locking and have them use the English menus. Unfortunately they can’t use the eShop and can only use the internet for software updates, but really I don’t think I’m going to need the eShop for much anyways and since the eShop is going to shut down soon it probably isn’t that big of an issue.
I'm given to understand that a modded Vita can also let you create alternate button maps for Remote Playing, which might really improve the functionality of that feature arrive PS4 games teens to be hit and miss as to their default Remote Play button maps, IMO. This would also mean that you have about the entire PS4 library comfortable playable on top of the Vita a native and emulated library, provided that you have a good internet connection on both sides.
im a little disappointed you didnt mention the overclocking and graphics mods. overclocking the vita is a must imo. and the graphics mod allows for higher fps caps and other cool features.
I kinda like collecting and modding handhelds, I didn't realize I even started this hobby till nearly a year after ordering the Steam Deck and I already want two handhelds for basically the same purpose. I always wanted a 3ds as well just so I could mod it and make people go "Woah wtf?" Especially when I show my very unique Vault Boy modded Metal Gear Solid special edition green PSP and my Vita having an Identical running interface in Adrenaline.
If your gonna mod it, just buy from Japan. They treat dirty things like they're broken. You can get a cheap vita for 80 bucks. Just wipe it down and mod.
I got a PSP for 20$, no charger no card, just a movie on a disk, also had a dead pixel. The console was a 1000 model but the fron was from a 2000 model. Modded it and got some games, my gf loves it. Also, its a rare white body.
@@kpaxgr Yea same 🤣 I sometimes sit for like 30 minutes or so thinking about which one to pick up and play. I'm working on building a physical library for each (I own more ds games than my other consoles) even due to the scarcity of some popular titles. I take trips here and there to my local McKay's bookstore to try and find some.
I would like to see an updated version of this for the vita, because the homebrew scene for the 3DS includes a massive library from any 64-bit console or older, as well as any Nintendo handheld and an active community that make exclusive Rom hacks and original games for it. I just want to see, how much the Vita can do because from what I know the best for library purposes is the 3DS, and honestly the most comfortable to use (more specifically with a grip).
Prices of vitas must have dropped off the earth in the last year, i bought one recent for £80 and it was in good condition. now is a good time to buy one.
PSP (1000/2000/3000) is quite a stylish looking device. The PSP Go, too. Can't really say the same about the Vitas, but they aren't bad at least. But the Vita isn't just a better choice practically. It's wayyy better. The original 3DS I always thought was a bad design and the last thing I'd want a handheld to look like (but I guess the pink one was still kind of neat). Even more so than the original DS. At least the original DS looked cool on the display side. I couldn't play MK DS on a DS Lite. Just don't feel right lol.
I actually chose to get the 2000 model of vita on purpose, theres a way to make the screen look closer to the oled through modding, it has better battery life, and for some games with poor performance on vita I can overclock and still have about as much battery life as the 1000 Altho it was hard for me to mod, it destroyed my memory card, and I was never able to get sd2vita working, so yeah the vita has the best functionality but the actual process of modding it is a nightmare, and this is coming from someone who has nodded a psp and a 3ds
The thing with the ps vita 2000 is that it has internal memory and the ps vita 1000 doesn't. So, if the original owner screwed up the modding process for a ps vita 1000, factory reset is as easy as taking out the memory card. I'm sorry to hear that you could not make sd2vita work, I recommend you to reset and try again, I have a 256gb card and I could fill it within two days of ps vita games.
@@fauxaccount6233 oh I had to redo a lot but I think it was something to do with the sd2vita, basically when I tried formatting it, it didn't work and it basically corrupted the card so I had to wipe it, but my system was actually still hacked, I just wasn't able to do anything with it at first because of course the applications that allowed me to install homebrew were gone, I got a new sd2vita but I ended up accidentally washing it with my clothes so I ordered yet another one and I've bljust taken a break frok the Vita and have been focusing on the 3ds. Also I only have a 128gb card which I know won't be enough so I'll have to buy another one
Personally I believe each is the best at its native use. A 3ds is much more natural for playing snes, nes games etc than playing them on a ps vita. I absolutely love both my modded 3ds and vita. But the Wii U is the most awesome modded console of all for me
Maybe because the screens are smaller so it looks a lot better but the ps vita can handle n64 games like banjo kazooie better and dreamcast games like sonic adventure. but itsall preference if wii u is hacked it beats all of them and if a switch is hacked it beats allof them too
I would actually say wait for steam deck. With a bit of Linux knowledge one could play pretty much any game they would want. In terms of power, it trumps any of these devices. No modding needed too. Bit steeper in price, but it’s worth because it combines any of these devices together. Even switch emulation will get better and be possible on the steam deck. Even home consoles like wii, Wii U, ps3, Xbox 360, etc can be emulated on windows/ Linux which is perfect for the steam deck. Sky is the limit when it comes to emulation on a common computer platform.
Agree in terms of all rounder and performance I would say steam deck could potentially be winner. Two factors that goes against it. One is battery life being short compared 3ds and vita. The other is weight. This is heavier than switch which makes less comfortable for long hours of play.
@@Belgarathe Hmm. While battery life is definitely a major concern, I think that GNU/Linux lends itself well to customization not only on the OS you see, but also the parts you don't see. Major optimizations can easily be made to increase battery life. You can do things like minimize background processes, close out desktop environments, limit clockspeeds, limit refreshrates, etc. You can optimize as much as you really want to tbh. And as much as your technical knowledge lets you. With the switch and other locked down consoles, you are kind of stuck with, with what ever the default firmware provides. With custom firmwares however, you can do what ever you want just like on Linux. Its just extra steps, hassle and potentially unstable. The Switch's method for installing CFW and running CFW is pretty inconvenient tbh. And with switch emulation getting better, the steamdeck may honestly be the best bet for any kind of handheld gaming :) In terms of wegiht, we'll just have to see lol. I hope its not too bad.
Comes down to what library you prefer.. 3DS. Or. Psvita.. 3ds gives you all 8bit and 16bit.. .with DS and 3DS VITA gives you all 8bit and 16bit with PSP and Vita...and notable some of the best ps1 emulation..with a great homebrew scene..that mods games like FF7.. While Vita gives you final fantasy x remastered...crisis core..and type 0...plus all the ps2 GTA games..and there's ppl who still port ps2 games to Vita.. For me the psvita has the stronger library.. Great ps1 emulation..psp and Vita is great.. phenomenal console quality games on Vita..persona4 golden..uncharted...and the prospect of ps2 games..which probably has the best library ever is unbeatable for me.
I have both the 3DS and Vita. I enjoy both!!!! I mainly use my Vita for retro gaming (GBA, ps1 and PSP). I use my 3DS for mainly 3DS and DS games. I found that adding CFW was much more tedious on the vita compared to the 3DS. L
Really? 3DS was harder to me. Vita was easy as installing from the built in web browser. Although I did run into issues with the sd2vita…that was work.
I have modded both new 3DS abd vita, I like the new 3DS because it feels more slick. Vita has the best library but N3DS is also great with DS game and older emulations, if you like 2D games definitely go for 3ds

The 3DS is amazing at emulating the SNES, since the 3D effect can create a sort of pseudo scanlines, resulting in sharp sprite work.
I have a Vita and a 3DS. Some SNES games like Super Metroid doesnt run well on Vita but run fine on 3DS.
@jose rodriguez i run Super Metroid on snes9xVita and the sound keeps crackling. Other games run ok. On the 3ds that game runs flawlessly.

Is the emulation 100% accurate?
@@kevinfromsales9445 yes

@@kevinfromsales9445 It's pretty good. There are only a handful of games that are a little wonky and require using RetroArch over Adrenaline, but the vast majority of PS1, PSP and Vita games can be played with no real hassle.
And the cool thing is that the PSP can run PS1 games full speed. So you can do the same with the Vita.
Biggest compelling reason for smart phones it very large screens and probably ability to use Bluetooth headphones.
@@Belgarathe Bluetooth headphones work with Vita.
I love the breakdown at the end explaining which one is the best based on what you have currently. Very helpful

It can handle a good amount of emulators, and recent retroarch pcsx rearmed nightly builds has gotten really good where its actually become a decent way to play ps1 games on it (not as good as psp/vita but good enough).
At the end of that week i had enso on bootup, adrenaline (psp), and Sd2vita.
agreed. Enjoy the 3DS jailbreak much more because of this.

@@HansVonMannschaft Killzone Mercenary is pretty fantastic especially with bots

3ds Is quite well emulated on PC. The DS very well on cell phones
Thanks. I had just overlooked that possibility and have spent all day researching different handhelds.

when you mod your VITA, not only do you have power to play PSP/PS1 videogames, you are able to overclock the system, reduce resolution and therefore play many amazing games such as Jak and Daxter, Borderlands 2, Resident Evil, Minecraft etc. with pretty much a few or zero issues.
Ill say, if you want to play on a Modded PSP, might as well just buy a VITA.
Larger screen, more comfortable analogs sticks.
Same with normal psp but for 25€
Did you just say the Vita has comfy sticks? Fuck those things the psp and even 3ds stick are far more comfy
@@beunjoris no u ape, I said theyre *"more"* comfortable than the psp's.
best one is having them all as a set :D
I have both a 3DS and a Vita, and I agree ;3
@@Michirin9801 Me too. I have like 100+ games between both. I might play 20% of them in my lifetime lol
So many amazing jrpgs
If u own a vita there's no reason to buy a psp
I really regret giving away my psp. It's just a precious part of my childhood.
I made this video 3 years ago. Back then they cost more than a Switch Lite. Now you can get a decent one for closer to the $100 price range
@@GameHeadNes I got the 3 like 2 years ago, my first one was like 2.5 years ago, I got a second, and third for myself not long after
My 1st one was about $200 on Amazon (that was a mistake)
My 2nd one was about $130 on Ebay for a 1000 model
And $150 for my 3rd which is a black and red 2000 model (I paid extra cause I wanted the black and red one
Cost wise, I feel the PSP is cheaper
Both have great games though
@@shadow3856 I understand. I live in the UK, so demand for the Vita might be completely different if you're from the US.
Unfortunately for the Vita, the Switch is likely to dethrone its niche as the prime emulation machine and with Vita having a sparse exclusive library, it may go back to being the console no one wants.
oh the vita absolutely has a niche following and community , the switch is very cool and i like mine, though the switch is fucking massive compared to the vita (granted the switch lite looks tempting for me to get and mod when i get arround to it)
i wish sony would drop a competitor to the switch, it would be so cool to see a psvita2 or something that would just straight up be able to run at a power closer to a ps4 than the switch is.
i doubt sony would just release a handheld console let alone one anywhere akin to a ps4 in power but it would be neat to see a high powered handheld
i would kill for a handheld device that could straight up play/emulate the ps3 library though if not some ps4 games too. as the vita was great at ps1/2 and some 3 games that were ported.
I don't sub often. Have a sub. You earned it by answering questions google wouldn't.

3ds = 3ds + DS
Vita = Vita + Psp + Ps1
I got my vita for $40 dollars, I had to spend another $15 to fix the screen, now it looks like new, and I understand how lucky I was, most ain't under $200, I'm never selling my vita
Luuuuuuuuckyyyyyyy! Hope you enjoy your Vita!
Where in the world are people spending 200+ on vitas
I would go with a hacked 3DS. Since not only can it emulate many consoles, it's also the most comfortable at playing DS, and of course 3DS games with the double screen setup. Honestly, I always roll my eyes at people emulating DS on single screen hardware that doesn't really work well.
PSP is good but the battery is no good, vita slim is the perfect handheld because of the USB charging, fat vita and go need a special charging cable
I love my modded Vita. Sd2vita makes it so damn appealing. I have never even considered selling it in spite of also owning a moddable Switch.
Great video! I thought vita would win. Such a great console. I love my 1000
Vita replaces PSP, 3DS has some great games
If your gonna mod it, just buy from Japan. They treat dirty things like they're broken. You can get a cheap vita for 80 bucks. Just wipe it down and mod.
What websites u recommend?
I got a PSP for 20$, no charger no card, just a movie on a disk, also had a dead pixel. The console was a 1000 model but the fron was from a 2000 model. Modded it and got some games, my gf loves it. Also, its a rare white body.
I own all three. Only one of these excellent handhelds is not enough!
Based
I own a limited edition Japanese red ps Vita 1000 console, black modded ps Vita 2000 and a modded red new 3ds xl. All are amazing handhelds! 🎮
Excellent collection! I own a PSP 1004, a PSP 2004, 2 2DS (not XL) and ps vita 2000. I can't choose which one to play.
7:46 Well, the Wii is also easy to hack, so I don’t know which console is easiest to hack WITHOUT piracy.
Prices of vitas must have dropped off the earth in the last year, i bought one recent for £80 and it was in good condition. now is a good time to buy one.
i know the vita would be a better choice than the psp, buy i just love the look of the psp so much more
PSP (1000/2000/3000) is quite a stylish looking device.
I actually chose to get the 2000 model of vita on purpose, theres a way to make the screen look closer to the oled through modding, it has better battery life, and for some games with poor performance on vita I can overclock and still have about as much battery life as the 1000
Altho it was hard for me to mod, it destroyed my memory card, and I was never able to get sd2vita working, so yeah the vita has the best functionality but the actual process of modding it is a nightmare, and this is coming from someone who has nodded a psp and a 3ds
@@fauxaccount6233 may I know what games & homebrew stuff you recommend for the vita? I recently brewed my vita :D
Also I only have a 128gb card which I know won't be enough so I'll have to buy another one
vita is easy af to mod
the only hard to mod console is x360 as i know
Personally I believe each is the best at its native use.
Def getting a vita
Nice this good
PSP IS THE WAY TO GO!!
so happy to have a dusty old model of each of these systems in perfect condition that i’m finally taking out again.
Comes down to what library you prefer..
3DS. Or. Psvita..
3ds gives you all 8bit and 16bit..
.with DS and 3DS
VITA gives you all 8bit and 16bit with PSP and Vita...and notable some of the best ps1 emulation..with a great homebrew scene..that mods games like FF7..
If you love the pokemon games the 3ds gives you all the pokemon games on the DS and 3DS..
Great summary
For how much flak the Vita got, i could say that you definitely could get your moneys worth with a modded one..its basically a PS3 lite
Great video, i would add another point to the psvita for the multimedia functionality. I love watching anime and take photo on the vita

I had a vita and I loved modding it. I never cared about playing games, I just wanted to constantly find ways to expand the capabilities of it.
I have modded both new 3DS abd vita, I like the new 3DS because it feels more slick. Vita has the best library but N3DS is also great with DS game and older emulations, if you like 2D games definitely go for 3ds
