Second: the profits DO NOT go to us devs, or even our original publishers. If you can’t get it physically through proper channels (more and more common), emulation is FULLY supported by most of us creators to keep the game(s) alive, even more than hinting down a physical copy (which we also support) it helps FAR more in the long run (at least through proper long term channels like Steam)
I relate so hard, that I became a game designer/systems developer in the actual industry. Sure, it was out of passion, but also to let me say “it’s just for work/study reasons…”
Lol. At least you have a good excuse. My brother was astonished when he found out I collected games, even though he was an avid gamer when we were younger. I told him that I just enjoy the hobby, and his response was "well, I guess everyone needs a hobby in their spare time." Little does he know I have a failing RUclips channel lol.
I'm sure many are comparing you to scott the woz, and there are some parts that seem almost direct conversions from his video on collecting, but I think you do add things that weren't covered, like the risk financially to try and out collect others, a tendency we all kinda feel when we start collecting. I spent a lot of money on my first year and now, especially going from community college to uni, need to slow down greatly, and balance budgeting between necessities and still getting things I want. Sometimes collecting has to go on the backburner, and that's ok.
When I first started collecting, oh man I was blowing money left and right. I'm glad that I calmed down because it was really starting to get out of hand for me! And yep, sometimes collecting has to go on the back burner, and that's okay. It sucks, but hey, life things come first.

But I think it's the uniqueness that drives them away, which for me and many others is one of the reasons we like Nintendo's hardware and software.
I've stopped asking people what I should buy at this point because everyone likes to tell you their preferences instead of what you're interested in. And that's interesting about Nintendo. Where I live, Nintendo is like the hot ticket item. The stores around me can't keep older Nintendo consoles on their shelves. And used Switch consoles?!! Those sell a few hours after they are traded in.
Fun video. First of yours I watched. Just a tip for ya - the physical media hobby of collecting and listening to music on vinyl and/or CD is absolutely massive …. And much of it is nostalgia-based. Ya streaming on Spotify is easy but look at those who stream music the same as those who download video games. But nostalgia and the feeling of ownership/connection when buying and collecting physical music is the exact same as physical video games (I collect both).
I honestly think the collector's that tell new collector's to go after certain games or consoles are silly. The best advice you can give in my opinion, is to tell someone to collect things you're passionate about and know you'll enjoy. You like Zelda? Great, start there and work your way up, you like Call of Duty, not my cup of tea but go ahead and start collecting those COD games. Start with the things you enjoy and know you'll want to play and before you know it you have a nice collection you can be proud of. Think that's the problem with social media and the human brain, we want to catch up to others and have what they have and that's no way to live. Just go at your own pace and budget and just enjoy the ride if you're truly in it for the love of it and not trying to flip which is a whole other problem.
True and we can't catch up. As off today i hust will collect only games i had as a kid or teenager. I might be finish soon this year or early next year.
Well, I feel somewhat honored someone watched this and thought of Scott the Woz. He’s probably one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to making RUclips videos
@@Throggy Eh, I feel like a big name comes around and has a distinct style it makes a lot of people making similar videos unconsciously lean into it. Hell I thought about talking about games even. But I love seeing different people's different collections. For example, Scott seems to have only more recently begun fleshing out his collection for systems like the Dreamcast and PS1, while you seem to have gone for the approach I have, which is to spread out more evenly across different systems. Also, you can always tell which systems people love based on the different sizes of their collections, so long as you consider the environment they live in. Like, the dreamcast is such a cool system, but I feel like there's not much to collect for it. A lot of sports games, and a lot of games I already would get on the gamecube. And speaking of gamecube, if someone has a sizable gamecube collection in comparison to their other systems, you know they must really hate themselves and love gamecube because my god are they getting expensive. But it's cool to see what people choose to collect in the more infant stages. Scott's collection is cool, especially with how it's laid out across a whole room, and I envy his nice basement setup where he can space everything out to feel like a livable space WITH a game collection, and not a collection crammed into a living space or a living space just purely used to hoard games. But he started making videos well late into his collecting time. Meanwhile, it's neat to see your 31 gamecube games and see what you valued spending money on. For example, I'm somewhere around 50 gamecube games, but there's still quite a few must haves and key items I'm missing. I got Smash melee and Sunshine at too many games 2022, so only recently, and I am still missing air ride, mario kart, luigi's mansion, TTYD, and some other staples. So it's just neat to be able to follow the collection as you prioritize games. Keep going man. Your style is pretty similar sounding to scott the woz, but it's expected, and as you make more videos, I think you'll find yourself falling into niches in the way you speak and present stuff that will be more your own style with influence from scott.
@@TurtleSauceGaming I appreciate the kind words! And I agree, I've pushed more for an "even collection" rather than collecting heavily for one system. I own the most games for the Wii U, but I haven't bought anything for that particular system because I feel like I've collected everything for it besides 2 or 3 games. And then the Gamecube stuff..... it's costing me an arm and a leg to buy stuff for it. I bought Mario Party 5 CIB for $70 and I almost leaped for joy because that's the cheapest I've been able to find it locally and online. It's a shame on how much those games have gone up, and if they keep going up I'm just going to stop collecting for it honestly. And about the Scott thing, I feel like once I sort of settle down, I'll eventually find my own groove on how I want to do things. I think the thing I try to emulate the most is his flow/delivery. It's buttery smooth and keeps the viewer hooked, no matter the subject.
Oof. I guess people will start calling me the generic version of Scott LOL In all honesty though, I know my videos mirror his..... more than I would like. I've been trying extremely hard to not mimic what he does but hey, what he does works. I'm still trying to find my own style but I guess my videos mirror his because I just like the way he does things.
I kept most of my family's video games that we had since I was a little kid and then started to collect hard about 15 years ago when video games were still affordable. I was able to amass a large collection over 10 years ago and own most games I ever wanted to own. I would never start retro game collecting these days with how expensive games are now. I would have never been able to afford my collection if I started buying games now.
I've pretty much come to a complete stand still right now when it comes to collecting. The only things I'll buy right now are cheaper OG Xbox games because of the price. As much as I would like to continue my Gamecube collecting.... the prices on the games I want are so high right now.
@@Throggy I have been buying a bunch of PS2, XBox, PS3, and XBox 360 games off of Facebook Marketplace for cheap. Those systems are still affordable to collect for. I bought over 200 games for $150 Canadian a few months ago off someone from FB Marketplace.
In a certain sense I've always been a collector because I still have all my childhood NES games and a fair number are CIB because even as a kid I recognized the value of keeping my stuff "all together". As far as when I actually started seriously collecting, I too began in my final year of college. The very first thing I ever bought off ebay was a Sega Genesis bundle that came with nine games for 25 bucks. That was, of course, before retro gaming was a huge deal and most of my consoles were bought back when they were actually affordable. I consider myself VERY lucky because if I were just getting into it now, stuff like the Sega Saturn would be out of reach.
In regards to getting into now.... I wish I would have started way back when I first got a job at 16 lol. I would have been able to afford way more stuff back then because retro gaming was dirt cheap when I was in highschool. And right now I can't find good deals in my area because of a few resellers in my area that snatch everything up the minute it hits Facebook Marketplace or even my local game store. I've sort of taken a pause on collecting just due to some financial strain, but I think I'm going to go after some cheap FPS games like the COD franchise, Battlefield, etc since I like FPS campaigns.
New to your channel, so just watching through your back catalogue of vids, enjoying the content. The dangerous rabbit hole of game collecting! ...im with you on its not just having the games to play, i also enjoy being amongst the collection, looking at the artwork, re-jigging the room in another bout of room-tetris! Some real great advice and tips there....the cool thing about the hobby is we all collect in different ways...maybe fullsets/specific consoles-regions/genres etc etc its endless! Keep the vids coming 😉👍
I used to collect physically, specifically PS3/PS4 games. I collect to an extent, after I Platinum/100% complete a game, I sell the game straight after. I do prefer physical over digital because I can get some money back but most of the time I buy games on whichever media is the cheapest.
Interesting. I have heard of some people who will beat a game, then sell it if they know they aren't ever going to play it again. There are some games I'll buy digitally, like if a game is going to be released by Limited Run Games I usually miss out on grabbing it physically so I'll have a digital copy on my Switch. I've been debating on "downsizing" somewhat, especially my Wii U collection, but I just like the console that much that it's been hard for me to commit to it lol
@@Throggy Yea, I used to be a materialistic person, but after contemplating costs, space and overall convenience, I decided to have a minimalistic approach. And you are right, I sell finished games because I know I will not be playing them ever again. I only keep games that I am constantly playing and they tend to be digital for convenience. I used to keep nostalgic and rare games but imo, there's no point keeping them if I don't tend to play them again. For me, I prefer experiencing the game rather than collecting. Btw, there's not much to downsize your Wii U collection, that system has one of the smallest libraries lol.
Great video! Your collection is so similar to mine but you got more consoles :) I got "only" Wii (GC compatible), New 3DS XL, Switch and the three great Mini consoles NES, SNES and Genesis. My "strategy", or what to call it, is to only buy the games that I wanna play. So I skip game series like Pokemon, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Minecraft just to mention a few. I only care about what I like, not what other people like. I got around 30-35 games per console. Maybe more than that for Switch. Always physical copies! Consoles like NES and SNES are special. I'm fine with these Classic Mini consoles. Honestly, that works great for me. You get the correct controllers and you get a great game library. Of course I miss some games on these Classic Minis like Mega Man 1/3/4/5/6 and some more games that I had for NES in the childhood. Never say never! I might buy a NES and collect for that console some day. There are some stores that got NES games and there's also some good sites where I can buy directly from other people. So I know how to collect but the big question is: do I want to collect for NES in the future? And same thing for SNES... Only time will tell...
If I had the money I would just buy everything I want and call it a day lol. Issue is, since I make RUclips videos, a lot of what I collect is for particular videos, but I try my best to come up with ideas that involve games I already have, or games that are on the cheaper side. I can't afford to buy games like Chrono Trigger or any other expensive games that people may want to hear about. I appreciate you for stopping by the channel! Happy hunting, and yes, physical media >>> digital media!
Same here! Would buy so much more. But with a limited wallet I do my best to find good deals for new games. Physical copies of course! I've actually bought a few digital downloads. A good example is Castlevania Anniversary Edition on huge sale. Costed around 4 dollar. But I've already bought the physical copy :) I like that your strategy: games that you already have, mostly. Speaking of the weakness for physical games... my Wii console's disc reader stopped work (common problem), so I bought a "new" Wii. That costed not much more than repairing the console. I'm happy with my collection. One thing that still hurts is that I let a friend borrow 3 GC games (Mario Sunshine, Zelda WW and Metroid Prime 1) and I never got them back! I should never have let that person borrow the games! I got Mario Sunshine kind of back thanks to Super Mario 3D All Stars. But I still miss the two other games. So that can be a subject for a future video from you: "collecting mistakes". So one mistake is to let a friend borrow some games and you never get the games back. But there's probably other kind of mistakes we all have done. Another mistake is when it's a great deal and you buy only one copy. Why not buy 2-3 copies? That will cost a bit more but it might be worth it in the long run. Also yet another mistake that's not a mistake but it can feel like that... when you sell your console with all games to afford to buy another console. But it might be a better deal to save up money for the new console even if it takes "X months".
Im a collector too i buy Consoles and Material physically. Like controlers and multitaps and Games. Some with boxes. But soon i should buy Emulators if i want to save money
Loved the video. I just realized tonight I'm a pretty serious collector and then your video popped up. Great great vid. Do you have the dust sleeves for those Christian nes games?
I gotta say you did a great job with this video I really love video game collecting (not only because it’s fun) but also there’s a story to them! Sometimes it can be awesome like how I got my copy of metal slug on sega Saturn! And other times it can be weird creepy and disturbing like how I got my copy of the salamander deluxe pack plus on the sega Saturn!
My family is forcing me to quit this year all together. Not just in games but all of my collectables. I've always told them that it's organized collecting, but they have called it hording junk. They've always had that minimalistic mind set about them when it comes to physical media. Saying "Oh you don't need it, modern is worth more." It's always been that "Traditional vs Simplified" througout my time.
@@fidelsolis6070 I used to, yes. Especially back in the 90's. Those 3 character DBZ sets that used to be found at my local market are going for a lot sealed today.
The whole "it's best to play a game on its original console" is 100% in your head. I've played enough ports to know that. Also, for games where there are multiple versions of the same game but on different systems (something like Arkham Asylum), what do you consider the "true version?" Or even non-exclusive games where the version varies depending on what console you buy it for? Like the SNES version of Aladdin vs the Sega version of Aladdin? Also, for someone who has the money to collect all the consoles that have ever existed, have room for them in their house/apartment, and own a CRT TV, I'm sure it's nice to have that sentiment. For all else, I don't think playing a game's port...or even emulation...is that big of a deal. Hell, I'd argue some of the ports are upgrades to the original. Chrono Trigger for the DS, for instance. Not to mention, getting different ports of a game can be part of a collection, too. Going back to the Arkham games, I have several different versions of Arkham City, for instance, because it's one of my favorite games.
eBay pretty good, I always look at the seller history, and they have to have at least 1000 sold item’s or i won’t but but take my time and search but lucky for me I have a bunch of retro gaming stores around me
I wish I had a bunch of retro stores around me. I live in the middle of nowhere lol. I think I'm going to make a list of stores in the US and then pick some that I want to go to at least once a year just to say I went. Then over the course of a year, I'll save up money that way I have some spending money when I go.
The life of a game collector: Early days - Pfft. Who buys more games when there's still lots to do in Zelda. 😏 Coming of age - I only buy games I know I'm going to play soon. 😊 Adulthood - OMG! This guy is basically giving away his copy of [Expensive Trash] for FREE! 🥵 Death bed - If I sell my last kidney now, I can at least have it written on my tombstone that I owned NWC. 💀
Pretty much LOL. At this point, I'm making time to where I can play the games I have, but of course, with new consoles coming out, the collection and backlog will only continue to grow. Maybe when I retire I can devote some time to playing the games. Or like my mom said, whenever the kids move out you get more free time.
The thumbnail idea was sort of my idea as well as the guy who makes my thumbnails. We thought it would be fun to see if anyone could pick up on it. As far as the content itself, I'm trying not to be a Scott the Woz clone, but times are hard out here and sometimes I let inspiration seep into my own personal content too often. It's something I've been working on a lot recently.
Wii Us are the best to collect for wii games the games look great on wii u but the 5th gen is great for the early era and the 6th gen is only great for gamecube exclusives not any kids games and fuck 7th gen and 8th gen collections the first and second and third and forth are my favorite console gens ever and I'm 16
I took a full day to think of a response to this comment, not because I'm necessarily upset, but rather that I believe that you are correct in your assessment. Allow me to explain. 1. You're right as far as this video being heavily inspired by Scott. And I will admit, during this part of my RUclips channel, I was leaning very heavy into my inner "Scott" since I am a big fan of his content. With that being said, I didn't mimic him to gain millions of subs. I did it more so out of "imposter" syndrome because I was having a hard time with what direction I wanted to take my RUclips channel. I saw someone who was successful and sort of ran with it without thinking of the longer term effects it could have on my channel. I guess you live and you learn. 2. I've had this comment pop up a few times (though the other people have stated in a nicer manner) and like I've told others, I admire Scott and what he has been able to accomplish on his channel. After being around the gaming RUclips world for quite a few years, his success is something that goes against the normal grain of a gaming content creator. He has set himself up for long term success, where other creators get on a high and then bottom out after so many years due to sticking to one game, etc. Yes, my videos are heavily inspired by Scott, but I also pull inspiration from other creators I've watched over the past few years. 3. My intention was to never become the off brand version of Scott. For starters, my sense of humor is nothing like his, and on top of that, I want to create my own brand so to say. Of course, I can't do that if I don't step out on my own path in order to make content that is true to myself at the end of the day. 4. Over this past year, I feel like I've done a much better job at distancing myself from the whole "great value brand" Scott. Do I still use the "border" thumbnail layout? Yep. Not because I want to be like Scott, but because I honestly like the way it looks. Plus I use different colors for borders depending on the video, what mood I'm in, etc. But in terms of just sheer video content, I stopped emulating his style and instead tried to find my own lane on how I pace myself in my videos. While it isn't perfect, it's definitely a learning curve. 5. Last but not least, I appreciate the comment. Sometimes hearing the truth told bluntly is something that people need in life, and well, the internet is definitely that place to hear that truth. I encourage you to watch my videos from this year and tell me if I'm still emulating Scott too much, because again, I would like to become my own person on this platform.
Sucks you got rid of your gamecube collection back then. I have mine, including some pretty pricey games, but I did the same with my ps2 and games from my childhood and so sad I did. Slowly getting some ps2 games back, but I still need a ps2 to play it. Might go for backward compatible ps3, so I can play both ps2 and ps3 games right out The gate. Roms work, but having tree physical games just has a great feeling to it. Just got my wii u and now waiting for it to come in. It'll be nice to finally get it and get the few dlc I want before the eshop closes
Oof man, those backwards compat PS3's that can play PS2 games are pretty expensive. I thought about investing in one until I saw what they were going for online.... it's definitely a hit to the ole wallet for sure. Best of luck to you if you can find one for a good price!
Modern games can't really be obtained in big box stores much anymore. Most of the time you have to pre-order, or just order it online. GameStop is a wasteland of the same games nobody wanted for years, and lots of empty shelves. You think they got in a bunch copies of Super Bomber Man R 2 today? Heck no. They never get anything new. Same thing at Walmart, more empty shelves than actual games.
Interesting. My local Wal Mart is usually filled with games. It also has about 10 PS5's and 10 PS4's just sitting in the case. I think it depends on the area though. Where I live, it's more of a poorer community, and I think a lot of people just can't afford the new consoles.
Do I take a lot of inspiration from Scott? Yes, and I will admit, I probably take a little bit too much from him. It’s difficult trying to find your own style/voice while analyzing other people you look up to and trying to emulate their success. I appreciate the comment, and I’ll try to continue towards working on becoming more authentic rather than completely copying someone else
@@WeegeeCool1 I appreciate it man. It's tough out here lol. Every topic has been covered and it's hard to put your own twist on it, especially if someone larger has already covered it.
Except with movies, streaming services dont include special features,. E-readers will never replace the feeling of a real book. With video games, 100% of the game is emulatable. Unless you count it sitting on your shelf a part of the game. Nostalgia making you spend $50 on 20 year old games is amusing.
Agree, it's fine that he values the nostalgia of playing games on their original hardware but he can't act like that's a unique phenomenon just for gamers. All the other things he was comparing it against can also have unique nostalgia attributed to them when consumed in the way people used to consume them. Like you said, some people prefer reading hard copies of books, or watching DVDs instead of streaming movies. Or for music, yes, some people also prefer listening to and collecting vinyl records or CDs rather than streaming it.

Brown hair.... Glasses.... Nintendo games.... some funny gags...
I'm starting to sense a pattern here
Oof. I guess people will start calling me the generic version of Scott LOL
In all honesty though, I know my videos mirror his..... more than I would like.
I love to see how far you’ve come! Your videos are always awesome! Keep up the good work!!
Thanks! I appreciate the compliment! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the fun video on organized hoarding.
You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it!
Thanks for stopping by! And I agree, collecting is always interesting because you get to see people’s different taste in games.
Bro this video was so good I was shocked when I saw you didn’t have millions of followers keep it up
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words! Slowly but surely I am making my way to hopefully getting millions of followers!
Sweet collection! But great advice on how to get started, I really appreciate it!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
"How do I start collecting?"
"Go to a store or website, pay some money, and voila."
"How do I do that?"
Great video, you drop some real truth bombs here. Will now refer to collecting as "organized hoarding" for sure lmao
Thanks lol. Nothing better than some organized hoarding lol
Ahh yes, nothing better than blowing your money on things you don’t need, but I completely understand lol. Nice looking collection!!
I mean, it could be worse LOL. Could be blowing my money on things I don't like.
Nice collection! You have some great games in it!
Thank you, much appreciated, here's to many more years of collecting!
Great video! Your collection is so similar to mine but you got more consoles :)
I got "only" Wii (GC compatible), New 3DS XL, Switch and the three great Mini consoles NES, SNES and Genesis.
But I've already bought the physical copy :)
I like that your strategy: games that you already have, mostly.
If my consoles all start failing one after the other, I think at that point I'd just switch to emulation.
As a fellow larryboy on ps2 owner, I appreciate your copy of larryboy on the ps2
I see you are a person of culture as well
I collect and put all my games in small cases and cd cases for the bigger consoles
Loved the video. I just realized tonight I'm a pretty serious collector and then your video popped up. Great great vid. Do you have the dust sleeves for those Christian nes games?
I do not. I probably need to invest in some third party cases for my cartridge games soon.
Defenetly subscribing. I checked the other videos good stuff
Thanks! I appreciate it!
@@calebpribyl5152 are you currently collecting for the Sega Saturn? I know that can be quite expensive
@@Throggy
Some of them are…!
And then there’s the Japanese section!
They’re really cheap!
Me too. Do u buy Action figures too
@@fidelsolis6070 I used to, yes.
This video sounds an awful lot like a Scott the woz at the beginning
eBay pretty good, I always look at the seller history, and they have to have at least 1000 sold item’s or i won’t but but take my time and search but lucky for me I have a bunch of retro gaming stores around me
I wish I had a bunch of retro stores around me. I live in the middle of nowhere lol. I think I'm going to make a list of stores in the US and then pick some that I want to go to at least once a year just to say I went. Then over the course of a year, I'll save up money that way I have some spending money when I go.
@@Throggy Portland OR has alot of good quality store's like side quest Games which they also hold an expo this year on oct 13th
The life of a game collector:
Early days
- Pfft. Who buys more games when there's still lots to do in Zelda. 😏
Coming of age
- I only buy games I know I'm going to play soon. 😊
Adulthood
- OMG! This guy is basically giving away his copy of [Expensive Trash] for FREE! 🥵
Death bed
- If I sell my last kidney now, I can at least have it written on my tombstone that I owned NWC. 💀
Pretty much LOL. At this point, I'm making time to where I can play the games I have, but of course, with new consoles coming out, the collection and backlog will only continue to grow. Maybe when I retire I can devote some time to playing the games. Or like my mom said, whenever the kids move out you get more free time.
I want to start a video game collection (despite collecting a variety of different things lol) and I am going to start with Mario ^^
That’s a great franchise to start with!
Nice video. Sunshine is my favorite Mario game ✌️
Thank you! It’s odd to see a Sunshine fan out here. I feel like most people dislike the game.
His video looks exactly like the video of scott the woz
They don't call me Great Value Scott for nothing.
This feels a little too like Scott the woz even with the colored boarder on the thumbnail 🤔
The problem for me is... not enough space...
I feel you on that one. Running out of space myself lol
I can see that this video is highly inspired by scott the woz. But I could not make anything like this. Amazing video! Keep it up
Thank you! I was inspired by Scott. I'm trying to not be a clone of him though lol.
Is it hoarding if you kept all your games from childhood and add to the collection the games your parents didn’t wanna buy for you as a kid?
Nope lol. Pretty much that’s how my collection started.
Maybe if I mimic Scott in every way I can get millions of subscribers...Guess it don't work like that.
For those that arent in the loop-- Dont go to DK Oldies 💀
Lol. They have definitely went off the deep end
Best of luck to you if you can find one for a good price!
i bought 4 wiis for 95 dollars at goodwill
Now that’s a score
The worst part was that you traded them in instead of seling them.
I’ve done both honestly. Trading them is less of a hassle but you’ll get less for them.
don't use DKOldies
lol the thumbnail looks like a scott the woz ripoff
and so does the contents
Do I take a lot of inspiration from Scott? Yes, and I will admit, I probably take a little bit too much from him. It’s difficult trying to find your own style/voice while analyzing other people you look up to and trying to emulate their success.
I appreciate the comment, and I’ll try to continue towards working on becoming more authentic rather than completely copying someone else
@@Throggy ay if it means anything, the content is original, and it's only fair that the key points were the same since it's a general topic

Love your style,Like bit similar to @ScottTheWoz
I appreciate it! Scott definitely is a big influence when it comes to my RUclips videos. I try not to be exactly like him tho, don’t want to be a copycat
