@@angelicazurbano7342 Agreed, the game genius spark in eye, from eons & blood. As with us, cur mongrels and dogs. Other breeds for other tasks. Dog lines have been unextant. Infantile reasoning logical fallacies and rhetoric of a lass. You are correct, 👍🏻
Indeed, because calling a dog a Pit Bull can lead to such terrible results - we’ll get more into those below - and the practice itself is so inaccurate, this study’s lead researcher says it may be time to scrap breed labeling of shelter dogs altogether.
“I don’t think it’s important or useful to label breeds when the actual pedigrees are unknown,” Julie Levy, a veterinarian and professor of shelter medicine at the University of Florida, told BarkPost.
“For Pit Bull-type dogs, the consequences can be profound if their chances of adoption or finding housing are decreased by a label that might not even be correct.”
Possibly a Pit Bull. Definitely a cutie.
For this study, 16 experienced shelter workers - including four veterinarians - were asked to visually identify the breeds of 120 dogs. These assessments were then compared with each other, and against DNA profiles for each dog.
And oh boy, were they off a lot of the time.
So-called “genetic” Pit Bulls were only correctly identified by the shelter staff 33 to 75 percent of the time.
Meanwhile, up to nearly half the time, shelter staff labeled dogs as Pit Bulls when they lacked any DNA evidence substantiating that designation.
[bp_related_article]
Slightly confusing (but necessary) background information: There’s no such breed as the “Pit Bull” - so no way of DNA testing for Pit Bulls specifically.
Rather, the study looked for dogs with what the researchers called “Pit Bull heritage” - meaning, DNA tests showed them to be at least 12.5 percent American Staffordshire Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
There is also a pedigreed American Pit Bull Terrier, which is ordinarily considered a “Pit Bull” - but there is no DNA test available currently to test for APBTs. However, according to Levy, they’re genetically close enough to American Staffordshire Terriers that they likely still tested positive for being Pits - and, Levy said, “dogs with this genetic makeup are still often considered to be ‘Pit Bulls,’ both informally and in the eyes of the law.”
If this all makes it sound like even at their most scientifically sound these sorts of breed categorizations are perhaps the teeniest bit arbitrary, read on…
Is this a Pit Bull? Maybe!
Here’s why all this matters: in hundreds of cities and counties across the country, dogs can be taken away from their families by law enforcement if they are suspected of being a banned breed. The dogs may then be killed, without having done anything wrong.
(Such breed-specific legislation, or BSL, is roundly condemned by groups like the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Bar Association and even the White House, as being awful for families, for animals, and for the rule of law, while being very expensive to enforce and providing no increase in public safety.)
Some shelters won’t even adopt out dogs identified as Pits. And then lots of landlords won’t allow Pits in their rentals either, which can make it punishingly difficult for families with Pits to find a place to live.
Even some well-meaning people will see the Pit Bull label and make all kinds of negative, untrue assumptions about what that dog’s personality is like. The assumptions may cause people to be afraid to adopt that dog, which in turn leads to Pit Bulls being disproportionately euthanized - killed - in shelters.
According to a statement by Levy:
“Identification of dogs as Pit Bulls can trigger an array of negative consequences, from the loss of housing, to being seized by animal control, to the taking of the dog’s life. In the high-stakes world of animal shelters, a dog’s life might depend on a potential adopter’s momentary glimpse and assumptions about its suitability as a pet. If the shelter staff has labeled the dog as a pit bull, its chances for adoption automatically go down in many shelters.”
Levy told BarkPost she’s pleased to see that some shelters are moving away from assigning breed labels to doggies whose parentage is a bit of a mystery. The shelters may say that a given dog looks like a Collie, or a Lab, or a Pit Bull, but will not attach definitive labels (“This is a Collie”) in the absence of more certain knowledge.
Instead, these shelters are giving potential adopters other kinds of information that will help folks pick the right pet for their household - like size, color, sex, and personality, “which probably serve potential adopters better when they are trying to adopt a dog that meshes well with their lifestyle,” Levy said.
Here’s an excellent essay about how and why more shelters can pursue that path.
Finally, a bit of an ironic tale that shows how much the Pit Bull label is in the eye of the beholder.
About a year ago, my husband and I were looking for a house to rent. We visited one place, where the real estate agent asked to see a picture of our dog.
“Oh,” she said, looking at a photo of our sweet Murray - that dog you see resting his little head on a pillow, above. “You can’t rent here. This is a Pit Bull.”
Well, sometimes that head of his does seem blocky. Other times, not so much, to such an extent that one notoriously Pit Bull-hating Internet personality once saw Murray’s photo and emailed me gleefully to say it’s clear that my dog isn’t a pit.
My dog, Murray
Dear anti-Pit Bull Internet personality: I don’t care what breed my dog is. That’s why I’ve never had him genetic tested.
For the record, when we adopted Murray - going on six years ago - he was listed on Petfinder as a Border Collie mix. Which sounded fun to us!
This was before I knew how arbitrary shelter breed labeling can be, or before I’d become aware that breed traits you might expect in a purebred dog may not be exhibited in mutts (a Greyhound mix may not be a very fast runner, for example).
And, along those lines, our dog has never herded a thing. Not a cat, nor a squirrel, not a person, and definitely not a sheep.
Now we are pretty sure that whatever Murray is - perhaps part Pit Bull, or Pointer, or who knows what - he, at the very least, does not act like anything like you’d expect from a Border Collie.
We still think he’s pretty great.
My husband and I are very fortunate, because we did not need to rent this particular house. We could hold out for a much better home for us, with landlords who don’t have breed restrictions - in fact, they have Pit Bulls themselves.
But still: Is Murray a Pit Bull? We’ve never had him genetic tested, so you tell me. Or, rather, don’t - because you’ll probably be wrong.

A dog walks into a shelter. Shelter staff see the dog’s blocky head and muscular body and say: That’s a Pit Bull.
Except that designation is often wrong, according to a new study published in The Veterinary Journal.
As many as a third of 120 dogs who were part of this study were called Pit Bulls, even though DNA tests showed they weren’t anything of the sort.
And some 20 percent of the dogs found themselves in the opposite situation - not identified as pits by shelter staff, while DNA tests showed them to belong to this cohort of blocky-headed dogs who are adorable, but face terrible discrimination.
Please look up issues of the Police gazette. They police were involved in the fighting of game bred dogs. They listed the match results in the police gazette! By the way "Petey" in the Little Rascals movie shorts was an American pit bull terrier ( game bred Colby dog) Also Colby's "Primo" a game bred American pit bull terrier (UKC) was used for the conformation standard of the "AKC" . The UKC precedes the "AKC". Just some tidbits of "pitbull" history I hope you will find interesting. They are still called bulldogs among the underground gamebred dogman.
I've had pitbulls for the last 25 years and by far they are the best breed of dog to have as a family dog a friend and a companion they are so loyal
I have a 9 month old and a 2 year old staffy. Never had a issue with them bitting or being aggressive there baby's. My dog Bartwho passed 3 years ago (a 9 year old bull terrier) on the other hand was a sweet heart to me and my wife but was a little aggressive with other dogs. I saw him chained to a porch for a solid month rain snow and cold and told the owner I'd take him or I'd call the city and report him. I like to thank his last few years were happy living in a house sleeping in a nice warm bed eating good food and seeing a vet regularly. Never wanted bore cared about pits till I got Bart now I Wana save them all. Gd there good dogs. Bart I know saved my house from being robed. I adopted a 4 mo. old Pitty mix in Sept. '23. She was shot over 20 times with a pellet gun, some of which had to be surgically removed, then passed through multiple fosters before finding us, her forever family. I've always had Rotweilers & found them to be wonderful family dogs, but I have to admit, this little girl rivals any I've had as far as being the best family pet. With her history, it's nothing short of a miracle that she has no aggression towards humans or other dogs. We did have to work through some food aggression issues, probably due to her having to fight for every scrap at a young age, but with consistent effort that was overcome within a couple weeks. She's now healthy, happy, & a joy to be around.
I’m a Pitbull owner, I had a female APBT Red Nose from a pup till 13yrs old and the 1st thing I did when I got her was read as much as I could on the breed, and she was naturally just the sweetest, most loyal caring, loving dog I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned Shepards, Huskies, Labs, an American Eskimo and even a collie, hands down best all around dogs… I now own a male APBT Blue Nose who I got when he was 9 months and he’s going to be 2 this august and he’s just as sweet, loving, caring, loyal energetic, protective and fun… they really are such great dogs… if you raise them with love, care, kindness and respect they will be sweet, loving and caring, and they are so resilient I’ve seen adult pitties that were abused,”in bred”abandoned even used as fighting dogs get shown love and care and kindness and turned out to be some of the sweetest most loving dogs ever, it’s how u raise them idc what anybody says, if I lock you up in a cage at birth and hurt you everyday and show you aggression and teach you to fight and kill…. Guess what when I let you out your gonna do what I taught u to do…. That goes for any dog even humans And they do not have lock jaws, that’s BS that came about cuz of the poor dogs that were used for fighting they wouldn’t let go no matter what pain they felt or what they went thru, so then some dummies said there jaws lock!! Can’t get them off!! No… they are super focused and determined and have a very high tolerance for pain… that’s why sadly they are used for fighting they all around have the best characteristics for it, and they don’t just “snap” either… another myth, I’d bet that anytime that supposedly happened if we were able to see the moments leading up to it either the dogs would be messed with or protecting there homes or owners or some reason for it… but hands down they also have the best characteristics for being a perfect family dog as well, they are fun, loyal, athletic, energetic, loving, caring, playful, Smart, alert, protective, great with children and other animals, you truly can’t ask for a better all around dog….
Exactly. They were bred for hunting. Just like labs or beagles ect. It’s about the honor and how you train it.

American pit bull terriers were bred for dogfighting.
American pit bull terriers are purebred dogs from established bloodlines developed from a foundation of fighting dogs.
The lineage of every American pit bull terrier alive today traces back to a fighting dog of the past.
If you look at the pedigrees of today's American pit bull terriers, then look at the pedigrees of the dogs that are in the 4th generation and then doing the same look at the pedigrees of the dogs in that dogs 4th generation.
If you do this long enough, you'll always find fighting dogs. Sometimes, you only need to go back a pedigree or two, and sometimes you might need to go back 4 or 5, but there will always be fighting dogs somewhere down the line
The breed was forged in the pit, and that's why its called American pit bull terrier.

I thought AKC, UKC and ADBA mattered? After Reading a good deal of the comments, it really makes me wonder about all of this.
I'm no expert just a lover of the bull breeds in general. I did read at least one book on each organization back in the day before searching for a breeder and eventually getting my APBT. Back then (early 2000s) - the books and resources I read all said the ADBA was the official organization that tracked bloodlines of the APBT. The UKC and AKC were all about the AMSTAFF. I think I remember the AKC recognizing the APBT, and calling it as such, but the UKC did not. Only separated out the AMSTAFF, bull terrier, English bulldog. There were no APBT in the UKC televised shows I used to watch back then on TV either.
So...??? Isn't it more about the aurhorities known to organize and keep records of the history of these canines than any one opinion? Even if that one opinion is so e sort of expert?
I know automotive dudes who know cars like no other...but if they tell me a Porsche is a Ferrari...it doesn't matter how much more they know than me...or anyone else for that matter. It's doesn't mean they are factually, actually accurate. If they are...how would they prove it? See what I'm saying(rhetorical, not aculally asking for answers here)?
Personally, I had my one and only pittie girl Tasha in my 20s into my 30's. She was registered, had strict lineage documentation from the breeder which I still have original copies of ("papers") with the ADBA stamp/seal. Whatever the argument is herein - I'm not interested in trying to add to it, or be "right" about any particulars...but how can this be anything but official?
She was a beautiful "blue-fawn" but was listed as only "fawn" on her type/color section of her ADBA papers. She was about 50-55lbs and amazing in every way. The lineage I had on her went back to grandparents, so - 3 generations of APBT as recognized by the ADBA specifically. Who knows. They're all awesome!
They are great beautiful puppies I like

@@daviedood2503 the best way to compare these two breeds is to look at working line Bull Terriers and purebred American pit bull terriers that fit the heritage breed type/ADBA standard.
When compared in this way both breeds are quite similar in size, strength, drive, and overall ability.
Although when you compare the breeds as a whole you start seeing more differences between them.
As a breed the American pit bull terrier has been kept closer to its original design, and has maintained a high degree of workability.
While the bull terrier as a breed has been bred more towards being a show dog and family pet, which means breeders has focused more on how the dogs look and fit in an average pet home.
As where American pit bull terriers have been bred more towards how well they perform in activities like hog hunting, and sports like weight pull, wall climb, slat mill racing etc.
Bull terriers have more health issues than American pit bull terriers do.
In my opinion the American pit bull terrier is better than the bull terrier, but the average bull terrier is probably an easier dog to have then the average American pit bull terrier is.
I LOVE MY PITTY !!!!!
Someone gave me a pocket bully and I have not had a dog in 35 years 😊, but can't figure out what color she is? She's Grey in the sun, brownish when in shadow with a white chest.
Got pics of course!
Never thought that pocket bully is such a damn sweet dog
Why do people crop there ears?
Interesing the Bull Terrier isn't on the list.
The bull terrier got separated from the pitbull or bull and terrier 160 years ago ...
10:35 gray and white blue nose has that, "we need to talk about your choice of dates," look.
Although they pass the temperament test better than other dogs, you can’t forget to mention, they hold the record for most fatal attacks. By a massive landslide. I love my Pitbulls, I have 3 and plan on having many more. But, it’s also an obligation to share all information and not just the positive stuff.
Mostly because of two things:
1. there are roughly 7.8 million pits in US, compared to roughly 3.7 million German shepherds. So the amount of bites compared to population is actually lower than most dog breeds. There is just so many pits that the odds of coming across one is much higher than any other breed.
2. Pits tend to attract irresponsible people due to the unjustified reputation they receive from people that believe the myths associated with them. Any dog with high prey drive and high energy who is kept up will bite out of boredom especially if they have not been socialized with other dogs and humans.
@Jakob Collier
No, the reason is because of how many dogs get labeled with the umbrella term pitbull.
When pit bull is used in conjunction with breed it means American pitbull terrier.
You can't use pit bull in reference to a breed like how you did.
By comparing pit bulls as a breed to German Shepherds as a breed, and then use all the dogs that fall under the umbrella term pitbull as your comparison.
In 1898, the founder of the UKC Chauncey Bennett registered his dog Bennett's Ring under the breed title American pit bull terrier.
From 1898 antel 2015 the American pit bull terrier was the only breed that had pit bull in official breed title. In 2015, the ADBA recognized the breed working pit bulldog.
The number of dog bites that are attributed to pitbulls is not an accurate representation of dog bites caused by the American pit bull terrier or any other breed.
Breed statistics that are created using the umbrella term pitbull are an inaccurate representation of the American Pit bull terrier breed.
They are by far the dog most bred to fight, the most abused, and most likely to be abandoned. You have to look at the entire picture. Go to a shelter and see how many pits you see compared to other breeds or dogs on the street.
@@logansilva8017 you are 100% correct. I like to use “bull and terrier dogs” as the umbrella term, but to reach most people, using “pitbull” is easier since I would have to explain what you just said. No one is gonna read that and still listen to what I have to say. So it’s easier sometimes to use the term they are familiar with to get the message across.
However, the statistic I used is for the umbrella term which would still be accurate in comparison to German Shepard in this case. If we use the actual estimated number for American pitbull terriers there is only 3.9 million and not 7.8 million. There has not been enough research to show the bites committed by real APBTs compared to other bull and terrier dogs that look similar, so I use the larger pool of dogs since that’s what the total number of bites is taken from.
Using the lower population the amount of bites per population is still 3.5x less than malamutes. Of you see a malamute and a pitbull next to each other, you should be scared of the malamute first since you are 3.5x more likely to be bit by one. You just don’t see very many malamutes walking around.
@@jmard24 exactly right! That’s why they have such a bad rep.
Blue tris are not pittbulls
So you haven't seen the blue Paul terrier it goes back to the 1700 hundreds from Scotland its in the mix before the English Stafford terrier
@@darrellsomers5427 Timothy said blue tri as in a tri color those didn’t exist back then. Blue Paul terriers were solid blue dogs
It was all staff n bullies in that thumbnail I didn’t not see no pitbull in that picture there is no such thing as a bluenose pitbull that term is thrown on Staffordshire terrier these blue dogs are not Pitbulls
What about American bulldog's? Are they a type of pitbull?
A bulldog is a bull dog..one of the breeds they cross bred with terriers to get the numerous variations due to mixing others within.
There is no such thing as a pit bull type. Either it is or isn't a pit bull. This entire video is BS.
I have blue nose and a amstaff both are great dogs
Please stop cropping their ears. It's very painful. Remember these animals have big developed brains that's feel pain and utilize memory. They judge, make decisive decisions, have likes and dislikes....I guarantee they don't like having their ears cropped. Besides if your not fighting the dogs then there is no reason to crop their ears anyway. Any floppy ears only add to the character and personality of the dog.
especially a beautiful companion that I fetish in a beautiful video 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖. but don't forget the boston terrier, gull terrier, bully kutta, gull dong, staff irish, old time bull terrier, pakistan bull terrier, shorty bull, nevada bull terrier, russian bull terrier, australian , chamucos Pitt Bull, Pitt monster, Working Pitt Bulldog, American Working Red. So yeah, keep it up for said Pitt breeds
Awesome !!!
I didn’t see a single pit bull in this video , APBT doesn’t come in white , tri color or blue , weight is 35-65 pounds , lot of bad information in this video about the pit bull , pit bull is not an umbrella term , pit bull is APBT and it’s a breed
Finally somebody that knows real American Pitt bull terrier only comes in 3 colors black red and buck skin brown that's it blue nose Staff no such thing of a blue nose Pitt or white
@Bagar true but rare with the older school blood lines
What about white rock
Blue nose looks so nice and red nose ❤
Everybody in these comments keep talking about these aren’t pit bulls or there’s only one type of pitbull. Y’all making me feel confused about my own fucking dog so next time I have to put down what type of dog I have on my rental application, I’m going to make sure I put N/A
If your dog is blue and is over 60 pounds its not an American pitbull
got a bully his smile is hart melting
Bully’s are the best my fist dog was a American bulldog (Spyke) from pup the next was a shelter pitbull (rex the monster) around 6 years old a ex dog fighter was with me for 4 years and sadly passed away because of hart competitions he was the biggest boy and a hart of gold and now a American/English stafferd (chaiba) also a rescue he is 7 and he still acting like a little puppy and he is my little baby
Sooo True!!!
are American bullies and bullies the same breed but diffenrce names?
I had to have my dog put to sleep. He had cancer. He was the best. I miss him so much. He did not have a mean bone in his body.
"They love kids". Sure do... sure do...
Mine loves chicken alfredo and walks in the park. He loves drives in the car and belly rubs
Just by the name of the video and the thumbnail i can already tell the person who made this knows nothing. and im almost certain that the people that gobble this nonsense up dont either
We have 2 dogs but she is a blue nose pit/dutch sheppard what a happy wiggle butt 😅
Stop with this pitbull type bullshit! There are no variations in the breed , the only thing you should call a pitbull is the APBT! Thats all, thats its!
16:03
He looks like a panther 🤣🤣🤣
We have a staffy and they are beautiful and fun and funny and a good family dog all they want to do is please you
You forgot about the Coby Pit
Who keep letting these ppl make these videos giving out all this false information
Blue nose and red nose are the same thing are they not?
Say what you want about a pitbull but I love them. Have always been around them and they have all been big ass babies. My penny is as sweet as they come but dont come near my son or you will see the side people worry about. She wasnt trained to do that.
It's funny the one that on the opening page that says it's a pitbull by perist its not a pitbull eather lol
I will say, having had many pits... the only good reason to crop a tail is to keep them from breaking their tail.
Or when their tails are so long that when they wag it leaves welts on their sides 😞
Ha! True. We call ours a "stick." That thing hurts!
The last myth vs truth answer was not clear. "The truth is no other dog breed has a stronger bite force than pitbulls..." Then immediately proceeds to name breeds that have a stronger bites than the pitbull breeds😑 ..... Here's a top 10 list ( every breeds bite are >, =, < isn't mentioned)

My sister has a part red nose pitbull and part yellow labradorite retriever she is so sweet girl.
So I got an “American bully” and it’s black n white all over with specks of brown scattered all over, brown eyebrows too, he has a twin sister and the rest of the litter are either all brown or all black, is this normal? Lol
You got a Bully not an American pitbull terrier. Don’t let these tree hugger videos mislead what the real American pitbull terrier is. The real Pitbull was never bred for looks but for game and fighting ability. Look up Bolio jeep red boy rascal nigerino bloodlines those are the real APBT for an example. No such thing as blue nose or xl xxl pitbulls. They have horrible temperament towards humans only bred for looks ignoring and not waiting until adulthood to breed to see what they are about
People still think blue nose and red nose still a thing 😂😂😂
❤
Never seen a blue or tri true ampt
You video is false. APBT don’t come in Blue. If the dog is blue it’s a Amstaff. Pitbulls don’t don’t come in tri colors either…
Rednose? The only pitbull is the APBT. All these are different breeds and mutts
Can someone tell me what my boy in the picture is??
Adopted an 8 year old amstaf. After about a year I came home and the dog greets me, tail wagging frantically, happy to see me, but upper lip curled up and showing teeth. It took me a while to realize she was trying to smile.
Lmao they love to smile or walk around w something in there mouth to sort of pacify themselves out of tm excitement😂
Dogs don’t really smile, when you come home, does the dog wag their tail to the right or left?
@@cbass7283 dogs smile bud. Especially pits, Known for smiling. My boy literally smiles when he first wakes up and when I haven’t seen him for awhile.

Red nose and blue nose are not different types of pitbull. Its only pigmentation that's different.
Red nose is a bloodline of the American pitbull terrier and "blue nose" doesn't exist
those blues an reds are real close to pure bread dogs dogs bread for certain traits, an color is not all they were bread for
There's no such thing as a blue nose or blue pitbull all the dogs that you are trying to call pitbulls are dogs that already have a names no pedigree not a pitbull remember a pitbull is a game dog
You havent enough knowledge to use punctuation.
Hey nobody really cares. I call all bull dogs 'pits' . Idgaf what people tell me. I'm an American. I can do wtf I want. You're welcome.
I believed the myth that pits were dangerous until I adopted one. Turns out that decision was one of the best I ever made.
I was the same!! Terrified of them. Then we bought one after losing our son. He was the best thing to happen to our family, after a traumatic event. Sure I’ve had many dogs in my lifetime, but not like this one. I can’t imagine our lives without him now. It’s all in how you raise them. I believe anyways. 🍻
Well, they are dangerous. The statistics don’t lie.
I have an American staffordshire terrier myself
Owning a pitbull type breed requires a lot of knowledge and understanding of the origin of the breed. Please do your research on the dog u own and don’t believe the myth “it’s how you raise them” although it does play a part. A large factor on your dog’s behavior has to also do w his/hers genetics. Pitbulls are loving dogs to HUMANS but typically to animals not so much. If you can accept that fact then you shouldn’t have much trouble owning one.
My husband wants to get one I hope I feel the same as you.
THIS VIDEO IS ALL WRONG, THERE'S ONLY 1 TYPE OF PIT BULL AND THAT'S THE APBT 😂😂
