- The American Staffordshire Terrier, also known as Amstaff (in the United States) or simply Stafford, is a medium-sized, short-coated American dog breed. It is one of several breeds commonly known as pit bulls.In the early part of the twentieth century the breed gained social stature and was accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1936.The name was changed to reflect difference from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of England.

Particularity: President Roosvelt raised them and promoted their images on military postings of the First World War. During the conflict they became popular and not only among the troops. A Staffordshire Terrier called "Stubby" saved a division of the army by warning of gas attacks. -

We had an Amercian Staffy he was not like any other smart, strong, loved very longs walks, enjoys going for long drives in car or trucks, not a fan of pet food loved our home made Italian. The hardest day of my life was to put him down till this day I miss him very much he brought a lot of love into my neighbourhood in Adelaide. God bless all dogs they are they are the loving animals humans can have a mate for life with.
I had a white red nosed AmStaff/Pit mix with light eyes and she was absolutely gorgeous. She was such a love and that smile lit up the house. She was very silly as well. I miss her everyday.
I purchased a Pedigree Blue Ammstaff They are so smart. I'm in a chair and from day one 12 weeks of age she would bring things back and place them in my hand ! She assessed the situation all by herself and applied a fix without being shown
I had a Blue Brindle 80 pounder. He was the best thing I ever had. He was really smart and a joker. I regret not breeding him...
I rescued a young boy this year. He is sooo sweet. He is a 75lb lap dog. NEEDS lots of exercise and things to chew & play with, that won't be destroyed in 10 minutes. He needs structure and loves training. You must be the alpha of the family pack. We are still working on being gentile with smaller dogs and our cat!

I fell in love with my girl. She was rescued and given up quickly. I've had her nearly a year. She is awesome and is my emotional therapy dog for PTSD (unofficial as yet). I trust her instincts. She is great with people and has only ever yelled and growled at dodgy people trying to approach too close when I tell them to stay back. She was bred to big for her breed and suffers bad hip dysplasia and osteo-arthritis so I just had to rescue her before some violent young fella grabbed her. As it was one bloke came to see her and she wouldn't even let him in the gate. She was waiting for me. 💕🐾

I miss my girl so much... over her 17 yrs she was a great family pet, hunting companion and kayak buddy... had to watch her around other animals as she would try to exert her dominance and prey drive but I could trust her completely around babies, she was such a people pleaser... also very athletic and brave as all hell
Edit: very good documentary on amstaffs... pretty spot on in my experience... oh and my girl was a "rescue"... abandoned breeding bitch... their loss and our gain... there are too many ruthless breeders out there... at least they didn't crop her ears, which is about the only problem I see in this video... if cropped properly there is no harm to the individual dog, but sadly it does help stigmatise the breed
Not for the inexperienced dog owner - that being said, they are the BEST dogs, if you got LOTS of time and patience, good (fair but firm) boundaries, LOTS of exercise, my little English Staff has 2 × 3 mile walks a day and 2 smaller outings. And most importantly, plenty of love, coz they got plenty to give 4 sure!
These dogs will give you full attention and will depend on a strong leader. But they are the most loyal and loving dogs, they can even get along with cats in the right environment.
great breed.This vid is spot on. My Amstaff of 13 years was the sweetest dog . Having 40 years of dog training experience a drunk neighbor thought I was abusing my dog when I was doing basic obedience and harassed me. My staff Jodi jumped straight up and pushed him back on his chest and he was pushed at least 4 feet backwards . She diffused the situation quick. She had no protection training. She was a difficult pup though, but she was my babe.
The absolutely most beautiful breed and amazing companion never his master but his buddy. Loyalty and love is how I describe my AmStaff most loving dog I have ever known. Please do not get one if you are not willing to give it Love which is all he wants all the time.
We are just waiting till his ready to come home in 4 weeks. Sounds like these buggers are big cuddles from my research. This will be the first dog we have brought not rescued in 40 years. I've 3 boys under 10 and he's gunna come on all our adventures. Didn't realise how much breeds differ in temperament.

Great truthful description of the breed temperament and training. They are much more challenging than a lot of people say. I love mine but even with horse and large dog experience, I had to research and experiment & spend hours daily training & exercising.

Staffordshire bull terriers is another name for APBT. AKC and another pitbull organization got into a legal battle over the name pit bull terrier. AKC lost and chose a different name.

@The real deal I didn't raise my dog from a puppy, he was 3yrs when I got him. My advice would be read books regarding that breed or just raising a puppy in general. I can tell you that I treat mine like family. My amstaff does well with dry food that's he's primary food type I do mix it with wet food that comes in plastic pack ( sausage looking) I mix that with his dry food. Obviously you want to give help healthy if possible. My also eats some human food, mostly homemade on some occasions, hopefully this helps.

Cropping the ears lower the instance of fungal infection as well as lowering the possibility of them getting caught on things or bitten by the critters they catch. Its not all about show; there's a purpose.

i had amer staf for 15 years and this is our short story, i hope you enjoy and even maybe learn something extra, that is a beautiful amer staff. i just put my 15 year old to sleep from very bad legs , i tried all new treatments but it was her time. and am still after 2 months depressed . boy, she was a difficult puppy, the whole neighborhood knew and loved her. mine was way different than the great pitbul more stubborn, and don't think she couldn't protect herself as a game pit got away from its owner and within a short time had the pit pinned with my staffs heavy chest and did a nasty job on her head and face and first time in a dog fight. she loved to eat , no matter what treat you had,must be given open handed or she may snap your finger. by accident. it was to bad that they were bred too big at the time i got her in 2002. she would have lived longer if smaller, their was nothing wrong with her her health and blood work was perfect , she always had a slow annoying walk b/c she was always in the mind set of smelling something which many times would just stand with nose in the air, she had a slight side to side gait and a bit of a small head i know she was pure but no doubt that she was either a large bred runt or just bred by bad backyard breeders , i guess that's why i got her for a mere 450'00$ she had that overall bull dog allergies , an inability to simulate protein well, leaving her with scratching and red paws and licking them, i saw the same in many pits, it is an immune problem. so i had to give her a gentle rinse with slightly cool water and just enough shampoo to rid her of the yeast on her that smelled like salty Doritos corn chips and when bad she would feel moist. can you see why god sent her to me how many people would have put up with her. as puppy she ate 19th century grand parents, then deceased, her queenanne furniture brought here from italy in 1920's with no upholstery. and walls, she took 4 years to mellow. and a slight fast under chin is the only way to hand correct from being stubborn and refusing to do her daily training exercise. in heeling and basic obedience which should be fun for you and the dog only a correct laced slip chain and laced to walk and a gentle snap when left laced so it will not lock up and easily unlock and not get stuck tight when laced wrong.
i loved you tutorial, they will naturally protect you as mine did by surprisingly springing in the air and pushing this drunk on his chest with her paws and it was a good enough push to keep anyone to continue harassing me her back legs came a foot off the ground. i was so happy and surprised she jumped straight up so high and she didn't bite . she was smart enough to know that this was still a human not an aggressive dog

He liked most people, and if he didn’t like you, he would simply ignore you. He loved adventure and we traveled many miles together. My regret, was not breeding him. I regret that More than I miss him, because he was a Treasure...

This was a swell video that I think many people will find beneficial if they want to learn more about caring for, raising, and training American Staffords as well as knowing more about the qualities and traits they are known for, but the history aspect is not as reliable. There are some things that I would like to point out about the history. Some of this American Stafford history is confused with the breed known as the American Pit bulldog. While some folks consider them the same breed, they are considered separate by many dedicated breeders and fanciers within both breeds and have been bred along different lines with different goals in mind for many years. The American Pit bulldog kept its integrity and functions as a working dog with the utmost importance in the breed being working ability and traits such as gameness. The American Stafford was a dog that definitely was seen more as a show/conformation dog that was bred away from a lot of the work/purposes that the game bulldogs did--especially the blood sports such as bull baiting, bear baiting, and dog fighting--and also was had much less importance (or need) for gameness. Speaking of bulldogs, the creation of the dogs and what they are is off. These dogs (the American Pit bulldog and the American Stafford) are not bulldog and terrier mixes like the Bull terrier is. They are bulldogs. The American Pit bulldog is said to be the original bulldog. Since American Staffords came into existence by being selectively breed from American Pit bulldog stock for traits such as conformation and showing, they are also bulldogs too with no blood of other dogs added in.
Static Surge I grew up owning and reading all of Stratton's books. However, more people believe that these dogs are indeed descendants of Bull & Terrier types. I trust the Colby's on that one. I don't believe that these dogs are the original Bull Dogs. Some of them are even more racy and Terrier-like.
Eric Terrance Colby is a very famous figure in the breed. Though I have not exactly seen his stance on the subject of history and what does he think about folks calling the breed a bulldog (the original bulldog no less), but Colby and Diane Jessup had came out with a book called COLBY'S BOOK OF THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER. Interesting that he would work with Diane Jessup, since she, another very dedicated, well-respected, and educated figure in the breed, believes they are the original bulldogs.
Eric Terrance There is some controversy among the different theories out there. Though the one about them being a product of original bulldog and terrier blood just does not make a whole lot of sense to some folks. The idea with the bulldog and terrier blood being mixed was that the terrier blood added gameness and agility, but bulldogs always needed to be plenty agile and game for the things they were doing (gripping and bringing down angry bulls as well as other large and danger beasts). Agility and gameness were actually extremely important when dealing with such critters, and the dogs that were designed to do so would have had to be so already. There would really be no reason for the cross as Mr. Stratton and others point out.
Static Surge the AmStaff n APBT came from the Staffordshire bull terrier. the staffy used to be called "Old Pit Bull Terrier". when they came here in the 1800s the other breeds were made. Great looking dog. Was my favorite breed growing up I loved the way they looked. Then I fell in love with German shepherds and that was it for me. I'll only by shepherd now.
Elite Working Dogs we have both a German shepherd and American pitbull terrier. Both are awesome dogs, I love the personality my APBT provides for the family and I love how safe we feel with the German shepherd around. Our GSD drive is not as much as our APBT but he makes up for it with his guarding instinct, cause anyone who's knows APBT or AMSTAFF knows they are horrible guard dogs they let anyone in.
Elite Working Dogs I'd love a German Shepard,I have a staffy and don't have enough space for a gsd. When my staff was a puppy she was attacked by a border collie only for a gsd to step in a pin the border collie down,the two dogs were out for a walk and knew each other. Ever since always wanted to have both a staff and a gsd.
I love these dogs, as long as it is Fullblooded, Registered, and healthy. Any color is fine with me. They come in many colors, some are rare but, you must remember if you breed them right, they will have a pretty set of Puppies as well. If they come out solid White or a Liver color, that is just fine when checked out by the Vet as a Puppy and Registered with a Kennel Club. Pink color on your Dog is fine as well. I have experience with the American Staffordshire Terrier or American Pitbull Terrier. They both can be Registered under the same Kennel Club as long as you have their original Kennel Club Registered Papers with their Bloodline.
@A- k They are the same exact Dog. The only difference between the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier, is the Kennel Club's, for example UKC will go by the name American Staffordshire Terrier and AKC will go by the name American Pitbull Terrier. For their Clubs when dealing with the Breed they have their requirements for what they would call the Breed under the name of the kind of Dog under this Breed. American Pitbull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers are the same thing. What is really confusing people with this Breed, is those Hybrids that come from Breeding them with a Bulldog Breed, called American Bully. They are not Fullblooded Pitbulls. Instead of the American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pitbull Terrier being Chubby, they are actually Muscular and have a tight Muzzle instead of Wrinkles on the Face and body, where as a American Bulldog has Wrinkles and Sagging Jaws. A lot of the times these dogs are mistaken as a Pitbull, but it was really a Bulldog, or other Breed.

Hey Brian same dog, different name. AKC wanted to use the name pitbull but lost to The American Pitbull Association. AKC lost came up with AST.

Sorry if I made it seem the AKC was not the reason for the name change as they wanted to distance the club from dogfighting on the otherhand the AKC does recognize the APBT because by opening the stud books repeatedly until the 70's because without outside APBT blood the amstaff could not continue with such a small genepool

Amstaff is love, they are very well behaved easy to train and perfect guard 💂♀️ people compare them with APBT and take them for ill tempered breed but trust me this breed is really friendly. It has been more then five years Bella has been with me and she has always been such a darling

They are a reflection of their owner. But yeah, they want to be love. Uncut males though will always be sporting for dominance controversy with any other male entity displaying a lack of respect for them, their owner or their space. The females are self assured universal referees for harmony. They are very protective of the family unit. Overall amazing breed.
I have a amstaff male uncut he’s very protective but also reserved unless provoked. The only time I seen him get mildly aggressive was when two young male German shepherds saw my dog from a distance and started growling and lunging towards my boy. My dog chief stood his ground and didn’t bark but his tail was up and ready to go toe to toe. Other than that he’s a couch potato and will lay beside me whenever I’m not at work . I learned the hard way the American staffordshire terrier isn’t for a first time pet owner but as stubborn as he is he listens and knows I’m his pack leader. He’s 55-65lbs 21 inches at the withers. I was told he was the big pup of the litter

I volunteer in a county animal shelter, 80% of our dogs are these, waiting to be put down if we can't get them adopted. Unfortunately, the majority are not adoptable because of having not been trained and raised correctly. I personally like them, appreciating their attributes, but the truth is most of our shelter dogs are dangerous. If not to people, then to other animals. I've witnessed many mauling, often from dogs we assumed were friendly. Owning this breed should be restricted to avoid the sad situation we now face. Backyard breeders popping out puppy to make a quick buck is the source of the problem. People love puppys so they buy one, with know idea what they are about to undertake. Six months later the dog is big and very energetic, bouncing off the ceiling with the owners having no idea or interest in working with the dog. They are banished to be chained in the yard or an alley. Eventually, they are let go to roam the streets.

I have two adopted. Both amazing model citizens. The problem is the people, not the dog breed. Shepherds, dobermans, Rottweilers, mastiffs, Staffs, Wolf Hounds, Huskies, Poodles, Dalmatians etc. any powerful and/or intelligent assertive breed becomes a liability in society when it was never raised with proper socializing leadership. Breeders and ignorant consumers cause a problem manifest in the dog.

We are waiting for our amstaff as he's still needs his mum. This is our first bull breed dog and our first dog which isn't a rescue 😢 but from what I have seen they are beautiful dogs. I've a family of 5 (3 young boys) and this dog will come every where with us on our adventures we live on the north East Coast of Australia. As I'm older now and have more time in going to train him and put all my free time into him we can't wait to get our Sam. Blue and white with bright blue eyes. I think we got the right dog after watching all the videos on them 😁

Colby’s Primo (A Colby male used to set the standards for the Staffordshire Terrier breed)
In the late 1800s with the industrial revolution, thousands of families migrated from rural areas to large industrial centers in search of employment.
Some of these families had as a form of “extra” income and tradition sell and bet on fighting dogs,“Pit Bull” dogs, when they saw the opportunity of a better future in the big cities they start to move and they took their dogs with them, changing drastically from a habitat where they developed completely, to small spaces in apartments and other cheap options where they were confined most of the time, without practicing exercises and losing their habit, which combined with a selection for smaller dogs, caused a visible reduction in muscular and bone structure.
By not registering fighting dogs, but yielding to the commercial pressure around the American Pit Bull Terrier breed, in 1936 the AKC (American Kennel Club), the largest and oldest kennel club in the United States, recognized about fifty (50) American Pit Bull Terrier, naming them “Staffordshire Terrier”, after unsuccessfully attempting to register under the name “American Bull Terrier”, removing the word “Pit” and disassociating the word that refers to dog fight, however, English Bull Terrier breeders for fear of the “reputation” of APBT dogs did not allow the use of such a similar name.

Some historical Pit Bull breeders of that time found a way to profit by selling his dogs under the name of “Staffordshire Terrier” which had a better commercial appeal because of the dissociation of the word “Pit” and the recognition of the breed by AKC. However it is common knowledge that many dogs of this short period of time (1950-1960) were actually game dogs, soon after was initiated the processes and requests of laws for the criminalization and prohibition of dog fights, that was published officially by the American government in the early 1970s.

In January 1972, the name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier, this because AKC began to plan the recognition of the English Staffbull which happend in 1975.
Lucenay’s Pete one of the fifty (50) Pit Bull dogs registered at AKC was the mascot of the famous TV series “The Little Rascals” in the 1930s.

Great Documentary. Thank you!. My breed since childhood. My father’s breed as well! I currently have two rescues, 1 all white, 1 black with white socks, and whenever asked about their breed, in shorthand, I refer to them as “Staffs” and let the conversation & myth dispelling go from there. Terrier people know but most North Americans are ill informed.
Diet part was fairly good too. The pasta, rice, and bread as part of diet though is far fetched. My dogs get pizza crusts, but no bread or pasta. Most all other sage advise empirically verified advice throughout this work! My wisdom from my farmer grandparents, and my mother for nutrients & fiber, I have been giving my dogs steamed or roasted sweet potato, squash, pumpkin, or pumpkin purée regularly with varying meat, and regular massive bones to channels those muscles. It’s a simple veggie formula I believe. Winning formula for 3 generations of humans and 9+generations of “Staffs,” Brit & American. Interestingly, my third dog, a Wheaton Terrier mix has taken to clearing my left over large zucchini from the fields. (I am a farmer). Spontaneous thing he did, picked up an 18” 3kg zucchini and polished it off like I would a watermelon on a hot afternoon. It’s become an occasional snack for him!

The dogs are naturally more aggresive than others, and do have that predisposition, but if you know how to properly work with them, you'll be fine as long as you stay calm. My staffy is a mix (Staffy + Schnauzer, but basically pulled all the staffy genes except the long snout), loves both other dogs and people, but can be VERY stubborn and vocal if she does not receive what she wants. You need firm corrections (without violence, of course) to get that under control. Funny thing is, I was against the breed until I got one lol.

if a staffie is well socialised and well trained. there is absolutely no reason why it can't be let off the lead. i never had a lead on mine as he was beaten while on a lead by a previous owner. he was as good as gold. he didn't take any shit off other dogs but it was always just a game for him and i could always call him away with a click of my fingers or a single sound(wouldn't have a clue how to descrtibe the sound through typing).

I hate those cropped ears and docked tails... I own a amstaf and she is beautifull, ears, tail and all. I wish I could upload a pic right here, to show everyone what she looks like. Me and my husband have been offered money for our dog on several occasions.
Sabrina Greinke Tails should never be docked. That's more of a Boxer thing. Some dogs look great with natural ears. In my opinion, these dogs look gorgeous with cropped ears.

To each his own.Some of us like cropped ears and some dont-the tail is never cut on the Amstaff.The operation is done under anesthezia,the dog doesnt suffer for a minute,and it can be beneficial for it because floppy ears can snag on shrubs,and mycosis can develop better in a moist enviroment.I agree its mostly an aesthetical thing,but dog breeding is an aesthetical thing-if not we would only have one dog breed resembling a jackal.
I've had Staffordshire bull terriers and they're little dynamic powerful intelligent canines and should imagine these dogs are the same ,,mine was great with humans but my male dogs just loved to fight so had to be so careful because these can kill another dog in minutes, so muzzle on around other dogs and all is good
They are compelled to cast out all frauds, liars, & demons. Haha! I hear you, I have had a few myself and many scraps with larger dogs. My males throughout life (3 all uncut) would never harm a smaller dog past a loud and scary 5 second close quarters assertion of dominance, 100% quick and effective at settling their dynamic forever. In most cases, my three Staffs have all ignored and visibly looked over or just turned away from smaller dogs that were belligerent and never start conflict themselves. They are compelled to resolve founded conflict though! If larger, non demurring breeds like mastiff, corso, etc. of ill temper, I always felt like my Staffs would fight to their own death in these circumstances. Had a couple moments that worked out ok but taught many lessons. Also, having the tenacity and never give up attitude of an AmStaff go after a porcupine was a heavy vet bill. Thankfully he learned after the second time. Farm life.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier lineage are a handful of intellect and energy and if well adjusted, are very assertive of good, noble formalities. I love them!
i just put my 15 year old baby to sleep. my whole neiborhood loved her and she loved all the children. she was not happy unless she went to visit the kids. but she was lazy and didnt like to fetch and she loved to sleep ,but garbage day was tough b/c she loved to smell stuff or llok for but she was breed bad from the blues fifyeen years ago and from this i believe she had bad immune system and suffered from what i call bull allergies. could not assimilate protein well. always licking her feet and would get yeat on her scin giving her a moist feel. i refused to give cortizone when young. but absolutley had to givve her an powdered oatmeal rinse 2 times a week. she was my baby as that is how i had to treat her for fifteen years, she was breed too large to much width in front which gave her a slow kind of side to side walk. she was black tuxedo but b/c of the blue in her background she wasn't a pure black she was given the name seal coat because her coat was a mix of black and brown hair but looked more black unless you looked close and could see the brown hairs mixed in. a blue staff or pit should never be encouraged. the black tuxedo you sowed looked just like my jodi. my girls ears were cut too short and the ear closed down on itself when she got older and i had a vet that cut out a grove so her inner ear would get ait. he did a fine job. when it happened to the other ear no vet would attempt to do what the other vet did. so crpping is good but some vets are not good at it and with a staff you got to know. although my dog was friendly she was a good guard and a natural protector by strongly jumping up and pushing the aggressor away a good 6 ft. , good she didnt bite b/c they do have a hard snap. i think she knew the aggressor wasn't mentally 100% and just pushed her away. loved this video but know i aam missing my jody, just put her to sleep 1 month ago. she was to big, and couldnt get up any more and would urinate while lying dowwn, i kept her as long as i can . i used a towel to help her get up stairs

my best dog was my staff and had a hard time having to send her to heaven at a good fifteem. badly bred, know i know why i got her for 500$, she was twice the size of the baeuties. but she looked just like them and she needed no guard work she new from the getgo and pushed someone away instead of biting, she was soo good with other people , did not like dogs of same sex but that was in one case with apitbul that i think kept anoying her being she was the alpha and the pit was like an intruder and made her jealous. she loved children more than anything, she was a child herself. all these kids about 10 yearsold, were sitting on a couch right inside the gate of their property and jody with her head down with that funny side to side nod and walked in climbed on the couch and laid acroos these 4or five kids and she needed that and it was a good lesson for the kids to love dogs. i get frozen raw food from a buisiness right here in nyc and my pomeranian does not tear anymore and jodies allergies subsided a good deal. but very expensive. i give to healthy dogs one day of cottage cheeze

Blue pol or Paul was not a separate breed it was a staff' from Durham and Newcastle .The American Pitbull is a Staffordshire bull terrier from Ireland and and England.Some of the history is wrong .The Irish staff's were brought from England .The American Staffordshire terrier is a Pitbull is a Staffordshire bull terrier lot of what you say is wrong.1956 to 1957 English staff's were brought over for bigger heads and chests for the shows .The bullterriers are English not American at All.Ukc and AKC registered dogs have different standards but DNA testing will confirm that the 3 breeds are the same.No cross breeding from American bull dogs to create ba Pitbull These really are from England and Ireland.But believe what you want.What you are hearing here is rehashed material from wrong books .The old family in the USA is from Irish stock.English breed sent to Ireland to America no other countries made the Staffordshire bull terriers.made in Staffordshire England same as Thomas' Hinks English bull terrier.

At first look ,my dog looks like an AST. However closer examination,she is,in appearance,everything a " true staffy" isn't her ears floop,her jowls hang, tail turns up,her eyes are gold and nose pad light. BUT,her attitude is staffy. Her name is " Lunie Luna". Shes a clown and shes mine.
The is no DNA difference between staffie and American staffie. They have breed dogs with other to get a bigger size in alot of cases. Most aggressive dogs is down to humans and how they treat dogs. The word Pit dog is simply any dog that they put in a pit to fight. Badly abused. Calling them ASTsounds better than PitBull, but to macho people AST Does not sound as good. My staffies look like these dogs but with their ears, small powerful dogs, well behaved with humans and other dogs. Especially children, very protective of children with strangers, and have done this with neighbour's children. Very proud of that. Terrified of my cat mind! Ha! Ha!
