I really didn't know what to think when Spencer told me they'd used AI to create their latest video. I'm tired of hearing about ChatGPT and how AI is replacing musicians... UGG
The inner purist in me didn't like the idea at all, but as watched it with Spencer in my ear... In my studio, watching along with me and giving the backstory as to how it all actually works, I became enamored with the level of detail, the interwoven story line and the amazing way the band worked with real footage, real actors and the band all together for something deeply compelling.
Oh... And I think Atropos is one of the best Periphery songs released to date!
Spencer not using tuning on the center vocals and the contrast of this video being AI generated speaks VOLUMES about the vision these guys have

Spencer just proves time and time again that he's the best singer in this genre.

I have come to that conclusion as well. There is not a better metal singer out there. Spencer wins.
Few other names, Marcus of Northlane, Lukas of VoM, and Sleep Token's vocalist. These guys are also incredible, and what makes them also incredible, is they are killing it live
And one of the only ones who can pull off screams and cleans live

I get the vibe that he doesn't like getting compliments because he's always trying to get better and doesn't want approval to slow down his motivation to improve. Or at least I'm that way and I kind of have the same tone when I thank people for compliments lol

I usually don't like AI stuff but that's only because too many AI "artists" try to imitate non-AI art with AI. This music video is an actually kind of creative use of AI, which is nice

Yes it’s being used as part of the message conveyed by the song, which maintains the artistic intent of it being AI art

Contender for music video of the year. It actually almost takes away from song itself(in the best way possible) as it’s so easy to get lost in the madness that is AI. Knew it felt familiar, good call with the new linkin park song!

Interesting comment, I can see the "takes away" part. I watched the video two times, and I liked it and the song, but I could only really begin to appreciate the song itself when I heard audio only, a couple of days later. It was like a switch and the essence of the music, that was overshadowed by the bombastic stream of imagery, revealed itself to me. Now I play both a few times a day and enjoy them in their own ways.
Its so cool Spencer didn't use tuning on the main vocals. That combined with the style of the video makes it sound so much more organic. Almost like im watching the music video create itself in response to his vocals in real time. Such an amazing song.
Definitely one of the BEST singers of this generation. Period.

This is one of the sickest music videos ever made by one of the best bands out there. Periphery has one of the most consistently unique sounds in the business, which is crazy for a band that’s been doing it for this long. They haven’t compromised their creative vision even once. Endless respect for that
Spencer has to be compared with the best vocalists on the planet. The dynamics and range he possesses is almost not human. These first 3 tracks are all so different and all amazing.

Spencer almost looks like he's watching his own child on screen. You can see the pride in his eyes, as he should. Both the song and the video are some of the best work ever from Periphery!

Statements from the studio that made it said they were using the AI as an enrichment of the context of the story in the lyrics, so I can get behind this. It's AI ironically being used to deride AI

This music video was incredible to look at but that poem about machines overtaking humanity in the video and the simple implications of a future dominated by A.I has me genuinely unnerved. So congrats Spencer and co. for not only making a great new song but also getting that message across very nicely.

I really appreciate the direct acknowledgement of how tuning puts a barrier between the music and the listener, that's a good way to put it too.

Wow, having Spencer explaining about how the video was made completely changed my mind on how i was looking at it. I was just like "ha, another AI video, whatever, the song is great". But knowing it was overlaid and generated from actual footage makes it so much clever. And even goes with the story, of something that was originally human getting replaced by a machine that themselves created.

Spencers Voice is so unique and with every Album I feel like he is able to tickle something more out of his repertoire, put a new touch on things, make his voice even more exciting.
I started singing / screaming a year ago and to this day "The Bad Thing" is one of my vocal goals.

I will openly admit that when I first got into Periphery’s music I did not like Spencer’s voice… and now I will openly admit that I was 100% wrong. Incredible range, incredible power, incredible writer.
Spencer didn't like his voice when HE first got into Periphery haha.... His development as a vocalist and artist is unparalleled. And he is one of the best out there right now!
recently got one of my friends who barely listens to metal to give them a try and he felt the same way. His voice definitely grew on me very quickly, at first I was a little caught off-guard by it but he eventually became one of, if not my favorite vocalist. I never thought he was bad but I didn't realize how talented he was until I heard some of his amazing clean performances and some of his lines never fail to give me goosebumps (like in Absolomb or Satellites.)
I would LOVE to see a video on Shayley Bourget (Of Mice & Men 2010-2012, Dayshell 2013-Now) his most recent song (Dayshell - Letting Go) really shows what his voice is capable of.

Just wow. Crazy video and amazing song. There is a lot new music to be excited about coming out in 2023 (Tesseract, Haken, A7X), but after hearing this song, I think this album just jumped to the top of my list. Thanks for putting Periphery back on my radar.

Didn't know the main vocals were raw and untuned, but listening back now you can hear the nuances of a real vocal performance. Sounds great.
Yeah, it's the same with drums and I guess all the other instruments. Sure, you wanna be tight and consistent, but you also wanna sound alive. Periphery always sounds so fckn alive.

Just listened to the new album about 100 time now lol , Wax wings WOW ! The second half of the song ‘ THESE MACHINES ‘ can’t get it out of my head , Spencer you can bring a tear to my eye and also goosebumps with that voice at the same time
To be one of the first bands to do this AI rendering, along with Linkin Park this is only the 2 nd video I've seen like this. I feel like this is gonna be used more and more and we will be used to it soon enough 😆

Would LOVE to see an extra exctended lesson on how Spencer wrote de lyrics, vocal lines and than especcially how he recorded and mix it all... for example around 12.48... how many background layers/voices are there and how are the panned? Every single album Spencer gets better and better. On top of that his voice is very unique. My favorite vocalist in all of music. This was a treat for me. You get a sub from me
Anybody seen "A Scanner Darkly"? haha yeaaah this is a GREAT use of AI. The only people scared of AI are those that think its a replacement for artists, instead of what it really is, which is a new tool to help us artists go further. Imagine if we were all still fighting for pinch harmonics, because our amps still sucked, and we couldn't record and test our ideas without a few thousand dollars to drop. And of course, it still requires people to make it good, I'm sure before editing this was nowhere near what it is now.
Periphery is such a head of the curve when it comes to being artists/ a band in an age where technology is taking over generic music..I cant wait to hear this album and see them live again.......PLEASE COME 2 PHILADELPHIA!
