Lol
The band that made me into a metalhead! As intense as Spencer is on this track, it doesn't really get across how good he is. There are songs with better clean sections, better screams and growls, and just all throughout Periphery's discography you can hear Spencer's style and how interesting it is. Maybe you talk about it in this video, but he often does this thing that's hard to describe, it's like a very compressed push that lets him hit what sounds like a high note but I don't know if he's actually doing a high note, it's almost like it's just the tone of his voice. Hard to describe, like I said, but there's so many cool things about his style. Absolomb was the first track I ever heard thanks to Rick Beato, and it's still one of his most impressive vocal performances. Of course, I have to say that the instrumentals are a huge part of Periphery. Misha, Mark, and Jake write some sick guitar parts, no idea how they make 3 guitarists work but they do. And Matt Halpern is a beast on the drums.
Spencer never fails to tug on my heartstrings, have loved Periphery for what feels like forever, and I'm glad you can experience it now too! Love all the food analogies aswell!
This is precise dissonance in both the vocals and the music. It's so delicious. It was so satisfying as a an old 70's prog fan to discover that metal has become the most progressive form of music. I like to think that King Crimson has been an inspiration for bands to discard traditional rhythms and adherence to "niceness."
I still listen to 21st Century Schizoid Man and think about how that was probably the heaviest thing the world had heard in 1968. Knowing that the next song after that is "I Talk to the Wind is hilarious because it's a reminder that Black Sabbath was only the first heavy metal band, but not the first to write heavy metal songs. I'm sure no one thought about 21CSM as a heavy metal song though, they were just a progressive rock band that happened to drop a bomb in the 60s lol.
i love and appreciate so much how precise you are with your descriptions of sounds. it goes to show there's so much more beyond, "that's so heavy dude" or "that's so cool!" it's motivating me to listen more closely to actually DESCRIBE a sound. when you said the music went from dissonant bundle to lush sound, i'd never thought of it what way before. thanks for really inspiring me to be more precise not only in my listening but also in how i talk about music i love.
Periphery is one of my all time great bands. Reptile is 16 ish mins of freaking great vocals and instrumentation. I've gotten goosebumps every time I hear the song. This song along with Atropos is great from their latest album. Scarlet is one of the OG favorites of mine as well. Can't go wrong with any of their songs to be honest.
Oh my god! It’s Periphery! Of all of their songs to do a deep dive on, you’ve GOT to do Reptile. It’s not just that it’s my favorite song from the band, but that it takes you on an absolute vocal journey that’ll touch on every aspect of Spencer’s vocals.
Couldn’t agree more. Reptile is such a great example of all the different aspects to Spencer’s voice. Plus Mark’s solo on it is my favorite one by him ever
I've listened to this song at least 100 times but it has been so joyful experiencing it through your ears. I'm getting chills all over again like I'm hearing it for the first time with you.
Spencer has SUCH an amazing range! I've been lucky enough to see them play live twice and he (and the rest of the boys) absolutely kill it everytime! Hits all the notes and carries so much energy on stage. You are indeed in for a treat!
Spencer is an absolutely incredible vocalist, so glad you have finally covered him and Periphery and VERY excited that he will part of your research! The Parade of Ashes is one of my favourite songs ever. With regards to the length of screams/harsh vocals vs length of clean notes, I personally find it much harder to sustain a pure harsh vocal, especially lower, guttural screams and growls. Cleans and semi-harsh vocals are easier to sustain for longer periods of time in general and I would think this is true for most people, but would love to hear others' experiences and see what the research ends up showing!
The guitarist, Misha, has said he comes up with a lot of his solos by playing something then adjusting it the point right before it just falls apart so he comes up with the pretty unique solos. His solo on Blood Eagle is a pretty good example of that.
I think you should definitely get Spencer on an interview, he seems like such a wonderful guy to talk to about vocals, considering he has collaborated with Chris Liepe in the past. He is also incredible, so I'm glad to see Periphery on this channel, thank you!
So happy to see you delve into Periphery!! They have been my favourite band for over a decade and they are going to come to Australia in November, first time in 8 years! Can't wait! Also can't wait to see what you think of Spencer's voice!
Yes!!! At last! Periphery is DENSE as a first listen analysis. Getting into each album felt like reading the first hundred pages of any challenging novel-it takes time to get a sense for the rhythms and textures and diction they’ve chosen for any given chapter but once you’re a little familiar it all starts to unfold in lovely and chaotic layers. So each song/album clicked at different times but there always something that keeps you there. For me that’s Spencer’s voice. It’s just as thoughtfully arranged as the guitars and drums but instead of tone or riff it’s sticky phrasing and unexpected hooks. I find a lot of prog metal has impressive but somewhat ornamental vocal performances. Periphery, however, is emotionally all in from the get go on every track and it’s so engaging. And while the complex parts are impressive, my favourite songs are actually ones where the vocal lines are highlighted like the super sticky groove of “Atropos”, all of “Crush”, the huge pre-chorus/chorus of “Heavy Heart”. Just so, so good. We are in for such a treat with Spencer, so glad he’s finally received the TCV treatment.
Periphery freakin' rocks! They're all great at what they do! Complex, deep - like a really hard lecture! That's Periphery! You'll be completely amazed by both vocals and instrumental!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Periphery has been my favorite band since I first heard them 2 years ago. I'm glad there can be someone who can spread the bands music like you and give a technical explanation of things.
This is such a crazy moment for me. Ive been a Periphery fan for almost a decade, ive been a fan of Liz, and this wonderful channel since the beginning, ive wanted Sponce to be on here as soon as I heard her wonderful analytic style. I loooove this video. Great job on the analysis so far, I am sad to hear that youre so exhausted, but, im so freaking glad that youre working with him. I cannot wait to see more Periphery analysis. This, or The Dillinger Escape Plan are my favorite bands. Id love to see Liz analyze Greg's voice on Prancer.
Part of the reason why the transition back from the jazz section back to the final chorus worked so weirdly well is because technically, they have the same chord progression! That's a huge part of what makes the chorus in this tune so interesting, its a great progression to improvise some jazz lines over, but its a uniquely challenging progression to write a catchy prog metal anthem over.
Been a die hard periphery fan since the beginning and it’s been so cool to see Spencer’s voice develop through every album. I think for the last two albums he really locked in what he wanted to do. Personally, I think he’s a generational talent and one of the best metal vocalists to ever do it.
FINALLLLY!!! I have waited so long for this!!! Not sure why I’m just now seeing this but better late than never! Reptile, Lune and Satellites are must listens! Reptile is my favorite song of theirs and it’s not even close! Thank you for checking them out!
It. Finally. Happened. Words can not describe how excited I am for more Charismatic Periphery. I saw them live for the first time on their wildfire tour and I subsequently binged their discography. Not only are they now one of my all time favorite bands, but it was the first time that I idolized the singer in the band over the guitarists since Chester in Linkin Park. I would be so interested to see you meet Spencer and my heart would be so full if a reaction came out to Reptile, Satellites, Absolomb, or Lune. Very grateful I get to see someone with your love and passion for vocals and music experience this band for the first time.
Yaaaas. Every vocal analysis channel should do tons of Periphery content. Spencer is such a beast, and he's one of the big reasons I keep loving this band ever since I first heard Icarus Lives. Been on their journey with them ever since and they keep getting better and better
I'm so glad you've finally looked at periphery! Now you need to do a video on Follow Your Ghost by them. Spencer does an entire choir by himself. I can even share the stems of his isolated vocals for it to make the video even more interesting.
The cool part about the jazz part is that the chord progression is a callback to an early theme on their previous Alpha & Omega album. That chord progression is used on that album as a sort of interlude to meld each song into the next. Fantastic album to check out, along with my favorite, Periphery III.
Have requested Periphery for so long! So glad this is happening. Atropos is a good next song to analyse, followed by Satellites! That is his best work according to me.
Atropos is another stellar pick off of PV, for sure. A lot of people ask for Wax Wings, but while it's super expressive, I don't think it's as representative of Spencer as a whole.
OMG FINALLY!!! Been waiting for this for years. Probably not the song I would have recommended for a first Periphery listen, but I'm here for it lol. I saw some others in the comments talking about Satellites, and I have to agree that would be a really good one. There's also that section right smack dab in the middle of Reptile that really puts his versatility on display. Wax Wings and Zagreus are my two favorites from P5 because they both use that classic Periphery song structure that I enjoy. It's Only Smiles would be another good one from P4 but more for the reason of what the song represents. Really looking forward to some more Periphery on this channel, and I guess I need to find a new band to wait for. Based on your comments about the jazzy section and your love for Opeth, I think you'd really like Rivers of Nihil (Where Owls Know My Name, and Subtle Change would be my top 2 recs).
I think you see from this song how much Periphery has to offer in terms of composition, talent, production, etc. Reptile would be 100% up your alley as it shows so much more of the range they are capable of. It is long, but well worth the listen.
YEEEES!!! This has been my favorite song recently. This is so perfect. You have showed me the joy in digging deep into the complexity of music and voice, especially in prog metal. Tool and periphery are my favorite bands right now. Love the videos keep it up!! ❤
I'm so glad the universe got this human to enjoy metal music, and, more specifically, my favorite band! I always enjoy your videos and can't recommend Periphery enough, even if its just checking them out on your own, off the channel. 😊 excited for the results of the vocal anatomy analyses!
Just adding my voice to the mix here, you NEED to look at Satellites at some point. I dont think any song from their catalog demonstrates his clean vocal ability better than the last couple minutes of Satellites, its so powerful.
This is amongst the fastest times I've ever clicked on a video!! I love Periphery, and Spencer is a big reason, though everyone in the band is incredible. I can't even tell you where to go next because I love it all, but if we're going new stuff the melodies in Wax Wings are great, but Satellites is also a great vocal example. Please do more Periphery!!
Absolomb is the song that made me a huge Periphery fan. Blood Eagle is also a banger. Both songs show off the prowess and talent in Spencer and the rest of the band.
I see a lot of people suggesting reptile, but I want to take it one step further. Periphery did a live session with meinl and you get some good views of Spencer doing his thing. I'd suggest specifically that.
You can get lost in periphery’s catalogue. Spencer didn’t even get into his highs in this song. Great band. I had been asking for this since the beginning of your channel.
Would really love for you to do Reptile by Periphery. I believe it is Spencer's best work, his vocal technique in that song is incredible! Either way, super stoked you decided to go over Spencer's stuff, dude is amazing.
Blood Eagle is possibly the best display of Spencer's abilities as a harsh vocalist. Super brutal and a vast range of sounds, and I imagine, techniques!

Absolomb is brilliant! Tbh if there was only one song to survive from their discography, I might pick that one.
@@VeritabIlItiglad there are more absolomb lovers out there
Spencer never fails to tug on my heartstrings, have loved Periphery for what feels like forever, and I'm glad you can experience it now too! Love all the food analogies aswell!
For a food Periphery makes me think of. I would say hamburgers and hot dogs with a bunch of mustard. If you know, you know.
So many reasons why one should never entertain the taste of the red
And ketchup. Don’t forget the ketchup
@@spoompls42069 a ketchup bottle the size of a spaceship
A “Reptile” breakdown may be longer than Gone With the Wind. And I’d be right here for it.
OMG YES I've been waiting for some Periphery!
Oh hell yeah! She's in for a treat! 🎉
Next periphery - Wax Wings. Let's go
Periphery is one of my all time great bands.
12:04 that face and sound 😂 is probably the most sought after compliment that EVERY musician strives to pull out of people 👏👏👏
If a long form video about Reptile isn't in the works it needs to be!!
I've listened to this song at least 100 times but it has been so joyful experiencing it through your ears. I'm getting chills all over again like I'm hearing it for the first time with you.
Your food analogies were so on point ahaha
This was awesome. Your range of facial expressions matched the complexity of the harmonies
Spencer has SUCH an amazing range! I've been lucky enough to see them play live twice and he (and the rest of the boys) absolutely kill it everytime! Hits all the notes and carries so much energy on stage. You are indeed in for a treat!
Got to see them as an undercard for under oath. Loathe was there too. Left after they and loathe played tbh.
He's one of the GOATs, for sure. Still can't believe he wrote the Marigold riff with no classical theory knowledge.
Enjoy, I caught them at their first concert in Denver and they just keep getting better!
American here, but I’m catching them here in Australia. It’ll be my 4th Periphery show
Yes!!!
:0
One of my all time favorite vocalists and bands. Such an unbelievable talent, just like the rest of the band. Can’t wait!
Let’s go Spencer is gonna be phenomenal data!!!!!
FINALLLLY!!! I have waited so long for this!!! Not sure why I’m just now seeing this but better late than never! Reptile, Lune and Satellites are must listens! Reptile is my favorite song of theirs and it’s not even close! Thank you for checking them out!
@14:25 : This is exactly why I prefer metal. You can continually explore and find new elements of the music for years.
It. Finally.
Oh wow you found Periphery and Spencer! Please go back and do "Jet packs was yes", "mile zero", etc.
Love your work!
A comparison of younger Spencer with newer Spencer would be so dope
All new materials!
@@MrScottMohekey Please please please All New Materials!!!
@@MrScottMohekey AKA the best intro riff to any song ever.
Yaaaas. Every vocal analysis channel should do tons of Periphery content. Spencer is such a beast, and he's one of the big reasons I keep loving this band ever since I first heard Icarus Lives. Been on their journey with them ever since and they keep getting better and better
Yes! Favorite band and vocalist of all time. Next time check out Satellites!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING SOOOO LONG FOR THISSSSS
I've been waiting for this for years. Deep dive periphery, please
But also, this is a 40 min video for honestly one of peripherys more vocally simple songs
You're gonna love them
@@yuugur666 Lol I was thinking the same thing, the Reptile video is gonna be feature film length.
So happy to see the boys on the channel. Thoroughly enjoyed your analysis! 🎉Keep it going!
Atropos is her Kickstarter reaction from spencer
Been a fan of both this channel an Periphery for a while now and so glad to finally get the 2 together
FINALY WE GET PERIPHERY YESSSSSSS.
YESSSSSSSS LETS GOOOOOOO. I need more Periphery on the channel and the video isn’t even out yet lmao
Spencer is amazing, and yet I feel he's underrated. He's so good at everything he does!
If its Periphery's turn, naturally this route only leads back to Mushuggah....
I think you see from this song how much Periphery has to offer in terms of composition, talent, production, etc. Reptile would be 100% up your alley as it shows so much more of the range they are capable of. It is long, but well worth the listen.
They are so good live. Always solid. And they are a bunch of nerds. All of their production is flawless.
wildfire live is a chef's kiss
I mean they wrote the book on modern metal production, so yeah
YEEEES!!! This has been my favorite song recently. This is so perfect. You have showed me the joy in digging deep into the complexity of music and voice, especially in prog metal. Tool and periphery are my favorite bands right now. Love the videos keep it up!! ❤
Love this. Would love to see "It's Only Smiles" or "Satellites" on here too.
Absolutely agree
This is amongst the fastest times I've ever clicked on a video!! I love Periphery, and Spencer is a big reason, though everyone in the band is incredible. I can't even tell you where to go next because I love it all, but if we're going new stuff the melodies in Wax Wings are great, but Satellites is also a great vocal example. Please do more Periphery!!
Absolomb is the song that made me a huge Periphery fan. Blood Eagle is also a banger. Both songs show off the prowess and talent in Spencer and the rest of the band.
I've been waiting for this for so long
Has anybody suggested studying the guy(s) from The Hu, who are doing the Mongolian throat singing?
I'm finally getting to see Periphery live in November and I cannot wait. The complexity and power in their music is other-worldly.
Same here in Canberra. 4th time seeing them for me, they’re incredible live
I see a lot of people suggesting reptile, but I want to take it one step further. Periphery did a live session with meinl and you get some good views of Spencer doing his thing. I'd suggest specifically that.
What a treat to see you do a video on Spencer he's my goat
You can get lost in periphery’s catalogue. Spencer didn’t even get into his highs in this song. Great band. I had been asking for this since the beginning of your channel.
Would really love for you to do Reptile by Periphery. I believe it is Spencer's best work, his vocal technique in that song is incredible! Either way, super stoked you decided to go over Spencer's stuff, dude is amazing.
Yeah we’re gonna need Reptile next. Spencer is a beast
Blood Eagle is possibly the best display of Spencer's abilities as a harsh vocalist. Super brutal and a vast range of sounds, and I imagine, techniques!
Oh wow, pretty Dope to see Elizabeth doing Periphery. Its an old song but id love to see what she thinks of "Jetpacks was Yes". Fun thing is there's so many versions, I wouldn't know which one id be getting when I clicked on the video xD
I think Spencer did a re-recording of that and a few other P1 tracks for his patrons. Would be worth a look to track his vocal journey, for sure
@@VeritabIlIti besides that there's also like 3 other versions on original release. I was today years old when I realised my version is not the official music video version 😅
Been waiting on this. Spencer is unbelievably good at what he does please do more songs by them.
Love Spencer and have done for years. Even through the miserayyyy.
Veil of Maya next? Luca has gorgeous cleans and fantastic growls, just like Spencer. Check Mikasa out!
Still can't believe that was Lukas' audition... Although Outsider is even better imo
And the bad thing. Great presentation of his singing and screaming in one song
WAX WIIIIIIINNNGS
I did not know Periphery was not yet included in this metal journey. In for a treat and very much worth to delve into. One of my favorite prog/core/etc metal bands of the last decade with one of the best drummers in recent metal-history (IMO). Excellent musicians all around.
Spencer Sotelo is one of the best vocalists in rock and metal today. Unbelievable range and power.
He would've been my choice to replace Chester Bennington in Linkin Park
I've been saying that too!
Tbh my choice would have been to not replace and just have many guests. Take their sound and kinda add some Gorillaz flare to it
I always wanted Periphery to feature Chester or vice versa 😢
so excited you are looking into periphery now! I second everyone who recommended Satellites, I personally think that song has some of the best vocals Spencer has ever done. Follow Your Ghost is also incredible, tons of power . can't go wrong
Wax Wings is incredible also.
that song gets me teary eyed every time.
I love love love this video. The whole time I’m thinking, I can’t to see her reaction to the smooth jazz breakdown. It did not disappoint. 🤣 Periphery has pretty much become my favorite band over the last few years. Please please please go down the Periphery rabbit hole!!! I know you’re all about the vocals but all five guys are absolutely incredible at what they do.
Spencer is one of my favorite vocalists. His range is second to none. Such an incredible technical singer/vocalist.
omggggggg finallyyyy ive been waiting for you to give them a listen and such a good one to start off with lol
Ragnarok! Periphery fans know the one part I am talking about
Seeing them perform wildfire live is just as good! Best concert I've ever been to!
to fully understand periphery's style you need to know the band that influenced them (and hundreds of other bands): MESHUGGAH.
25 years ago they invented a new style of metal never heard before, and they are still one of the most important and respected bands in the metal world.
I have heard that name a lot!
Even Devin Townsend points out in one of his songs that "We all rip off Meshuggah." 😁
@@PProph its not ripping off though. all art is derivative.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Meshuggah aren't necessarily a band with a lot of vocal 'variety', but the vocals are fantastic at what they do and they sit in amongst VERY complex and heavy music, so they serve it perfectly. It would be awesome to see you react to Bleed or ObZen!
