  • Having learnt to sail dinghies back in the UK, I decided to try my hand at larger vessels. With that in mind I booked an RYA Competent Crew course with Hercules Sailing School in Gibraltar. The course was run over 5 days, with three us and the instructor staying on the yacht throughout. As I was there to participate I wasn't able to film most of our manoeuvres when out at sea, but still managed to capture a bit of footage to show family and friends what the course is all about.
Unfortunately I forgot my 'deadcat' so apologies in advance for any wind noise.
Why sailing? I'm a big overland traveller, and to me cruising yachts are the ultimate go-anywhere 'overland travel' (as in the surface of the Earth) vehicle. Shame I can't fit my motorcycle on one.

Me ha gustado mucho, la veredad. No pillo del todo lo que hablan, pero me sirve de práctica de Inglés y de términos nauticos. Muchas gracias. Thank you very much for sharing this experience. I have learned very much

Thanks for the video. One thing that has never been made clear in any of these instructionals: will I have to sit an examination at the end of a 'Competent Crew' course? Or do I simply need to show competence to get a certificate?

Jeff Edwards No exams, you just develop your competence over five days of sailing fun.

With that training is it enough to sail anywhere (for leisure, no commercial operation) ? Or do you need to have the following RYA training (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, ...) ?

To charter a boat you'd need a day skipper or ICC (International certificate of competence). Depending on where you live for example in the UK, you don't need anything to go and sail with your own boat. Obviously a good idea to training in though so you're safe.

@@defylifeadventure that's great thanks. Do you think you learned enough in 5 days to sail on your own?

@@_el.guapo_ I think enough to start learning on your own. Perhaps combined with the Day Skipper theory if sailing in the sea rather than lakes, as it will help with piloting and navigation. It all comes down the school and teacher, and how confident you are. I had previously learned basic sailing on Laser dinghies, so the actual sailing of the larger boat was actually easier in a way. Of course more experience helps. My plan was crew on a bunch of boats first. As it turned out, I ended up buying my own, and sailing the Med for a few years, before crossing the Atlantic.

Not quite, the latest one is worse. Shaky camera work and everything. 👍
