The pace. The graphics. The instructor. The voice. Confident. Calm. Clear. These are but some of the words that come to mind. My wife being a new sailor of one year really enjoys listening to Marco. She explained she had less anxiety than when she was learning or when she reviewed. This channel is saved on three devices. Absolute brilliance!.
Learn something new everyday. I’ve been sailing since 1972? Everything from sunfish up to 45 Lagoons. I can’t remember ever hearing the term Gudgeon. Glad I watched.
Just what I needed. I've sailed and owned sailboats for 50 years, on & off, but just bought my first "big" boat last year, an old Islander 30, which was built just after I first started sailing (1972). After all these years, I figured that it was time I learned the terminology for parts of the sailboat, etc, or at least get it more clear in my mind what I thought I knew. There's more to know about on the bigger boats. What you shared here was very helpful. I very much appreciate the effort you put into making this video. I learned more in such a short time than any other videos or classes. I'll be coming back again!
Superbly done. I just have a little sailing skiff now but my parents used to own a family cruiser. I forgot how wonderfully complex a family sloop is! Beautiful teaching craft!
Dude, need to watch this about 10 times and learn everything. Simple, potent, and good for beginners like me. I'll definitely share it with relevant people.
Stumbled across this learn to sail series a few days ago. Thanks so much for putting this together. The video quality is excellent, the instructions clear and concise, and the editing detail is first rate. If you are new to cruising (which I am) these videos are a big help in understanding the basic cruising course material. Thanks again.
This is very clear and concise! five decades sailing here but I took a 3 + year break and this is a great refresher, not only for me but in communicating with some inevitably novice crew.
@@CarpeDiemSailingMagazine Thank YOU! Very generous of you to share your expertise. Here in Annapolis I'm looking forward to some 60s and better weather. All the best.
Thank you for these videos. My goal is to purchase a small day sailer under 30ft when I graduate law school next June. I plan on taking sailing lessons first but these videos are helping set a foundation so that I’ll have as much knowledge as possible .
That's great Calvin. So happy to hear that my videos are helpful to you. You should find your lessons will make a lot more sense with the foundation you have established.
I am so looking forward to watching this series. I really want to learn to sail and this is a great place to start. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in such a calm and informative way. Fair winds from the UK
Just came back from my first weekend under sails and it was AMAZING!!! A beginning of new adventure. Thank you Marco for great videos, after watching a few of them beforehand I was more confident about what is going on around the yacht and it made understanding the commands from instructor so much easier. Keep it going :)
Yes, both boats facing the same way. Otherwise the best explanation I've seen. New to all this, 52, and just looking into sailing, and binge watching different sailing channels. Great job!!
Wow, this video is super helpful! How does it not have millions of views? I have started studying the sailing theory in my native language, but I don't even live or plan on sailing in my country, so knowing the English terminology is a must and that's how I came across this gem. Hoping to utilize the knowledge from this channel on my upcoming vacation which will include a sailing trip!
Loved the video, we hope to get into sailing in the near future, so this real basic level of teaching is what we are looking for. One Life, One Search, Shane
Very though and logically laid out video. Really clear information. I'll be sharing this link with new sailors or folks who might want to learn the basics. And I learned what a tang is.
This video series is so good that I keep coming back again after watching and absorbing for a few weeks. I'm on my fourth cycle now, and each time I find new nuggets. There is so much knowledge packed into the videos and the 10 minute or so duration is just right for learning. Kudos. I'm ready for the checklists and cheatsheets mentioned in this video, but I couldn't find them on your website. Could you post a link? I wish I was closer so that I could sign up for in person instruction. I bet I'd learn a lot more from you in person, and it would be great to learn it all on my own boat.
Thank you so much Todd. I'mm delighted that you are finding the videos helpful. The way you are using them was my intention. Good work. Here is the link to the show-notes: www.carpediemsailing.com/shownotes/
Your instructions were clear and thorough. There seems like so much to learn with sailing and then when you see all the physical work that goes into it, I wonder, where is the joy in sailing?
It's not really that much work, and it seems much more intimidating than it actually is. There is no feeling like it when you shut off the engine and the boat keeps going and all you hear is the lapping of the waves along the sides. Having said that it's not for everyone which is why power boats were invented

Wow I am writing down all the terminology (4 pages of notes) but cant keep up as Marco runs through the graphics so fast. I had to rewind and rewatch dozens of times which likely helped to learn. Thanks, "Seas the day"
Thank you Still Passion! The graphic has nothing to do with sailing simply which boat is physically further upwind in relation to the other. Hope this helps.
Hi! Just discovered your playlist from a Facebook group and I’m really excited to go through your content! Compared to many channels it already seems like very quality content... I’m just curious, what happened to the first four episodes?
Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging comment. The concept for my channel was to be line bc a sailing magazine exploring various topics. Ep1 was an intro to the channel and concept. Ep 2 was on serving an inflatable PFD and Ep 3 was on Collision Regulations.. Being a sailing instructor many of the videos are instructional ruclips.net/video/FhtQKFC1C-g/видео.html
Reminder, standing and running rigging need to be inspected and replaced at the proper intervals, so many boats are out there with rotten lines and standing rigging rusted to break point, (FYI, almost always in behind the treads of the turnbuckle so you won't know if it is bad) replace standing rigging at the right time, BEFORE it is obvious! Or see your mast come down.
Thank you for the informative video. As a non native speaker I find nautical terms particularly difficult to remember and to some extend even unnecessarily complicated. I wonder if these terms will be changed to something simpler for the next generation to easily learn? I mean many are from 18th century Dutch

The front is called the foredeck and around the mast is the mid ships deck. The cockpit is the area where the helm is and where the boat is worked from. Traditionally the cockpit is the open area at the back of the boat but there are also centre cockpit boats. Hope this clears it up for you
