Precious Time is the third studio album by American singer Pat Benatar, released on July 6, 1981, through the Chrysalis label. The album peaked at number one on the United States' Billboard 200,[3] her only album to do so in any country, and was certified as Double Platinum in sales in the US.
Its lead single was the mid-tempo "Fire and Ice", which was a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100[4] and a number 2 hit on the Mainstream Rock chart.[5] It became her largest hit to that point in Canada peaking at number 4 on the RPM Singles Chart but only made the Top 30 in Australia and New Zealand. The song won Benatar the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1982.[6] Precious Times' second single, the rapid guitar-driven "Promises in the Dark", one of the few Benatar singles written by her and husband Neil Giraldo, was most successful in France, were it reached number 16, while reaching number 38 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.[4][5] It also made the Top 30 in Canada but did not chart in any other countries.
Peaking at number 2, Precious Time was Benatar's third straight Top 3 album in Canada, although its Double Platinum sales certification in that country was less than her first two albums. It was another major hit for Benatar in France, rising to number 3, and was the first of two number 2 albums she would attain in New Zealand. It was her first Top 10 album in Australia and Sweden (her only one there) and was her first album to reach the Top 30 in both the United Kingdom[7] and Norway. The album was remastered and reissued on Capitol Records in 2006.
If someone ever said, "Explain Pat Benatar in one song," this is the song I would pick. It has all of the different elements that make her great, mashed into one piece. But her catalog is just stupidly full of amazing tracks.
💯🔥
She has the looks of a rose petal but the vocals of a lion...so soft yet so powerful!
Perfect analogy💯
Flawless vocals. There is no better in modern rock than her and Ann Wilson of Heart. Yes she’s a tiny woman. Funny huh? The guitarist, who is so talented and HOT, is her husband, still. He wrote all the songs with her. He’s still stunning. They both are.
They are. I've seen them live 6 times over the past 20 years and they still kill it. She may take a different vocal run on the bridge crescendo of this one, but her voice is still a powerful beast.
Oh wow‼️ I did notice he was a vintage snack🤩 okay Pat I 👀 u🤣
Please don't forget Linda Ronstadt as one of the best voices of rock and every other genre she sang.
She is 5' tall and everyone wants to say how tiny she is, but nobody mentions how tiny Stevie Nicks is at 5'1".

Omg Pat Benatar is one of my all time favorites .... I still listen to her to this day. Can’t believe she’s not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet. React to ‘Fire & Ice’! 🔥
I love Fire And Ice too, but it's ironically the only Benatar hit that Pat hates and doesn't include in her live sets anymore. (And she co-wrote it!) But she always does all the other hits.
Yes, Fire And Ice my favorite song of Pat Benatar.
@@tapanim6576 LOVE Fire & Ice.....and it's odd they knock their earlier tracks that fans love. It questions their tastes to be odd optics. We all evolve and artists grow....would LOVE new studio cds from them.
My 1st concert was Pat Benatar at age 12! I was floored because I only heard her on the radio. The biggest shocker was Pat Benatar looked about 5 feet tall and weighed about 98 lbs. Her performance packed such a powerful punch. Her vocals are ferocious and her command of the stage is badass. She was decked out in leather with boots that had the highest heels I've seen. She's a tiny woman they made me feel like I didn't want to mess with her. Real Rocker Chick😎🤟🏾
Wow‼️ Your firsr concert was Pat Benatar - she def set your concert performances standards high💯🔥

I love that you reacted to this. I am a HUGE Pat Benatar/Neil Giraldo fan, having seen them live 6 times over the past 20 years. This is by far, my favorite song of theirs, and one that they wrote together. Her vocals on that bridge are EVERYTHING. I never understood why it only charted at #38 on the Hot 100 when so many of her other songs went way higher. Pat herself has said in concerts, and in her book, that this is in her top 3 songs she's ever done (I know that Hell Is For Children is another, and I think Heartbreaker is the third, but I could be wrong on that one). Great melody, great lyric, great vocal, great guitar, great production. It's a beast.
#38😳😳😳OMG‼️ What were ppl in the 80s thinking‼️
Mr. Dan, you're a lucky individual. To see her several times live, you will never forget these amazing experiences for the rest of your life. Pat Benatar was a vocal force in the realm of the very soul and passion for music and the effects music has on each individual on the planet earth. You're 😎👍✌
The guitarist is her husband Neil Giraldo. Legend has it that the record label was trying to make her into a more disco pop star but it just wasn’t landing. She had left her husband and job as a bank teller to go to NY city and make it big. The label couldn’t understand the sound she wanted to make so as a last ditch effort they hired Neil. She and Neil immediately hit it off writing her stellar rock pop anthem debut album, he was the missing piece. Within months they fell in love and became musical partners, still touring together and writing songs till this day.
Neil, not Nick
@@bearballin dang auto fill. Errr. Thanks
@@jasonnelson9707 that explains cuz everything else in your comment was 100% accurate so I was like "how can he not know Neil's name?"
Wow‼️ Disxo would have totally limited her
5 feet tall and 92 lbs of absolute rock power! The biggest female rock icon possibly of all time, influencing many performers after her. Married to her guitarist for 40 years now. Hit after hit! Check out "Heartbreaker" and "Hell is for Children" also....
I love seeing young people truly getting all amped up in the music I grew up in and appreciating it just as much. Welcome to real music, made with real talent, and sung with real voices.
From what I remember she had training as an opera singer. That's how she can hit the notes effortlessly.
You’re right, she is super petite…she’s only 5 feet tall and weighs next to nothing. But she opens her mouth and all that incredible, beautiful power is released…
💯
This is one of my ALL TIME favorite songs! I'm a singer & Pat is a huge inspiration of mine. Glad you enjoyed!!
From 1979-1983 Pat Benatar was the coolest girl singer
How do I send a video link to patreon
Saw her 3 times
I remember when this came out. This will always be my favorite Pat Benatar song. Going from emotional to hard rocker, this song is in my top 10 of all times.
yaaaas! 🔥🔥🔥
oh yes! killed that!
Hey, Empress!! For me, Promises in the Dark is one of Pat Benatar's all-time best songs. When I first listened to it I was taken aback when the song rocked out and it no longer was a ballad. It was so unexpected but I was intrigued at the same time and those vocals... Pat Benatar could never ever sing badly not even if she tried but if someone had even a small ounce of doubt about Pat Benatar or are not still won over by her, Promises in the Dark is the song to refer them to because in terms of Pat Benatar's vocals it has it all. She may be just 5' feet tall but as you said it in the reaction when she sings you see Pat with a totally new height. That's how talented she is.
Wow‼️💣💣🔥🔥 is all that can describe her
Um lady, she's better than BS bc she too has incredible range but can sing everything from Opera, rock, o, ballads, show tunes...Babs can't get to rock or pop. Check out Pat Benatar cover Patsy Cline's "Crying"... will blow you away
Great song! Rock on Empress 🤘🤩🎸😎🤘
🔥🔥🔥
@@EmpressReacts she has quite a few good bops under her belt. I’ve said it before. Y’all have us men beat!! Yeah there’s some good male singers with good songs but women dominate in music!!! It’s the plain truth 😀
What can be said about Pat Benatar... there are so many more amazing songs for you to explore with her. In a field dominated by men, she stood out. For anyone who loves female vocals and rock/pop she can't be beat.
🔥🔥🔥

Such a powerhouse voice. Love Pat!
Empress with another good pic. PB had a great voice and sound. Her husband was a great guitarist and had a great tone. They were meant for each other. Love Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo!
She's amazing
🔥🔥
One of my favorite singers of all time.
Loved your response
Thank u‼️
I remember buying the cassette of one of her greatest hits compilations, Best Shots back in the early 90's. I mainly bought it for Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Love Is A Battlefield and others......little did I know that THIS was the biggest gem of all. Like you, first listen I was blown away by this song. Prob my fave Pat song.
Best Shots is one of the best greatest hits albums of all time! That was my gateway to Pat around 5th grade or so!
Soo🔥🔥
I had that cassette. Stole it from my brother actually!
This is one of my favorite Pat Benatar songs. She is awesome!
🔥🔥
Love her saw her 3 times in the 80s! If I remember correctly Pat was classically trained in vocals. I have a friend with a cat named....Cat Benetar!
🥰cute‼️
Me too....
Great song, Pat is a treasure
Empress, Hey Girl, Hey! Another good choice for a reaction video. Pat definitely ruled the stage! And Neil too!
Hi dear Empress,
wow you said right. Sweet toughness. I didn't know Pat Benatar and I'm really impressed. Her voice is incredible. So sweet and controlled in the beginning and then strong and powerful. She's really great. Thank you for this gem once again 😘😘❤️
Exactly🔥🔥
In 2022 her and her guitar player hubby celebrated their 48th anniversary. Unreal. Her story is on VH1 Behind The Music. It's good.
😂😂wow‼️
I have the 1981 vinyl of this and you ought to hear that. There's such a richness to her vocals on that. There's such a dynamic presence to the recording. When the drums come in you jump out of your seat, at least that's what I did when I had it cranked up the first time. Fire and Ice is another great one off the album.
Pat Had many hits here is A short list of songs to try out !
1) Hell is for children
2) love is A battlefield
3) we live for love
4) we belong
5) shadows of the night
there are more 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
She's even better live
Oh, love me some Pat, she was my one and only female singer until Madonna came along. My two favorites. Fn fact, I think she is a trained opera singer.
Ah, i can totally see why 💯
Madonna...no match to Benatar's vocals!
@@johnr5382 - And what was the point of that comment? I don’t recall anyone saying her vocals could match hers. Who gives a shit.

@@greg2976 😄sweet! Welcome aboard
such true words!!
This was one song that started as a ballad and shockingly segued quite effortless and naturally into a hard rocking tune! She was a classically trained opera singer who brilliantly and effectively became a rocker! Over the years she had transitioned to many different genres, pop, adult contemporary, even made a jazz album (“True Love”) in 1991! She is one of the strongest vocalists of our generation! My next pick would be song “You Better Run” with its accompanying music video which was the 2nd music video ever aired on MTV on August 1, 1981! I suggest if you like the switch up in this song transitioning from ballad to upbeat, definite must for you is to react to “(No More Tears) Enough Is Enough” by Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer!!! You will love that one💕
Yaaas‼️ Natural segue💯 and No More Tears I heard it - ruclips.net/video/VimkdpQsobQ/видео.html
I love songs that start out slow and then drop the beat with some loud ass rock music. Pat was good at that. I feel like women like her is what is missing in todays music. The closest we get is maybe Pink sometimes or Miley when she does renditions. The last time I remember hearing women really kick ass in music was when Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette was big.
Oh wow‼️ So that would be Sk8ter Girl era🤣🤣 I think you're right
She has some awesome songs. Another great one of hers is "We Belong".
Ooo gonna have to check it out💯

Pat brings it LIVE! AMAZING voice....for this era, in this genre....the only woman who comes close to a reasonable comparison is Ann Wilson of ❤. These ladies shred the competition. The hot guy playing guitar is her husband..still! As far as today's ladies....Pink and Miley got great rock vocals....love ur channel Empress🔥🔥🔥
thank u! glad you're enjoying
Great reaction. I loved the song when it came out, and still do. And by the way, Pat married Neil G., the guitar player, and they're still an adorable couple today. 🤘
Pat Benatar is such an amazing artist. Her vocals and talent are out of this world. She has so many great songs and strong albums released. Shout out to Niel Giraldo (husband and guitarist and song co-writer etc.) who's been beside her all this time and is her partner in crime.
🔥🔥
and that was Real Live!
🔥
The album this came from is called Precious Time.
Myron G on the drums! Great band and along with Ann Wilson of Heart, the power.
Empress has great comments on vocals. She gets it. Pat is fully emotive vocally her songs are really complex and when she creates a harsh sound that is really hard for a female vocalist to do because of the length of womens vocal chords compared to mens, Pat can manipulate her voice, notes and sounds unlike any singer. Her songs are super hard to sing because she is singing such high and low notes all mixed up. Her eight years of opera voice training has turned her into a a POWERHOUSE ! Pat is fearless!! Check out invincible or All fired up...
Ah, that opera training served her well💯🔥
Barbra Streisand wishes she can sing like Pat benatar there's not even comparison not even close , I rather spend $40 on a Pat benatar ticket then $3,000 on a Barbra Streisand ticket , I want to be rocked I don't want to fall asleep hearing Barbra Streisand . Pat benatar is the queen of rock and roll ...😍🤩
React to Pat's Shadow of the Night and Invincible from a movie called The Legend of Billy Jean a great message there .
Thanks for the recommendation ❤
Pat Benatar can sing beautifully, or sing tough like Joan Jett. Shadows of the Night, or Invincible are a couple of other songs by Pat Benatar you should react to.
❤. BB you have a great ear for talent. Streisand level is absolutely right. Pat's classically trained as a operatic vocalist. She knew at an early stage in her life performing with high energy and having fun were going to be hard for an opera singer. Thank god...she made the right choice.
Too great ❤️☮️
You are so astute! I've never thought about it, but Benatar might just be the Streisand of rock!
Love a bit Patty ❤️
She trained to be an opera singer before turning to rock music.
She was my crush, still is.
Cool choice and reaction 🎶
🔥🔥
Fire and Ice
She's no Streisand there is only one! She's more like a female Ronnie James Dio. Her songs illustrate the power if a good musician husband.. She really doesn't do anything than Heart and the Wilson Sisters. Though like them she is very good at it.
You gotta react to Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar some day.
✅noted
This was the first song Pat and Neil wrote together. It is about the start of their relationship. She did the lyrics and slipped them under his door because she was embarrassed. He wrote the music. Pat was a Julliard level opera singer but she wanted to do rock so gave it up. She met Neil when he tried out for her band, and history was made. This era is her transforming her voice from opera/show tunes to rock. She gets way better as the albums go on and they are still out there performing every year. Check it out live in 2001 to see the difference in her vocal power: ruclips.net/video/-lEdaJkZK2g/видео.html
Damn I like you!! I love watching you feel the music cuz I feel it too!😜.. and you make me laugh with joy too! Very entertaining!🎵🎶 .. wait I just got to add this your analysis is spot-on as well!
Wow thank u‼
This….is a rock song.
90 pounds of 5 octave power.....with a great band behind her.Try” Heartbreaker.”
She's classically trained with a 5 octave range. She 3 ft tall and weighs 50 pounds. Just kidding 😂. She is a tiny thing, though with a roar like a male lion.

Pat Benatar as the Barbara Steisand of Rock? No, I would say that title would go to Donna Summer instead. 👍 Pat Benatar would be a better comparison to Debbie Harry (of the band named Blondie). ❤
nice song choice. not sure if you want ot check this out, but Pat Benatar did a version of 'wuthering heights' that you covered (and didn't really like) by kate bush. pat's verison is a lot better (to me), but see what you think if u want to give it another chance with another artist. :-)
