If you don't know, Pat Benatar is finally being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. Now that she is in, she revealed why she refused the induction for many years. She would not accept until her husband and guitarist for her entire 40+ year career was also inducted. Neil Giraldo arranged all of her songs and they have always been a musical partnership. They are an amazing couple as well.
Hmm, while I certainly give her the points she deserves, I have to argue that she has some very *STIFF* comp from both *Stever Perry from Joursey,* and *Ronnie James DIO* for that title!!
Without Myron killing the drums, none of it matters. He damn well never sat down the entire concert. It was glorious to see live, and I will never forget it
Pat Benatar trained as a child to be an Opera singer and she rebelled against her Father's wishes and became a rock performer. She bought Mom and Dad a new house.
I was in the old house when her first album was released. She came back with Neil to visit Ma and Pa. Wasn't a bad house but I'm sure the next was a mansion.
Pat was involved in musical theatre throughout grade and high school, and surprised her parents by not going to Juillard School. She attending New York state for Health Education instead. There was no rebellion. She married her high school sweetheart Dennis Benatar, and got a job as a singing waitress in a night club in Richmond Virginia, where they were located. She formed a band with friends from the night clubs she worked in. By 1977 she moved to New York, got few jobs singing jingles, and by year's end landed a contract with Chrysalis Records. She met Neil Girardo soon after landing her contract. The rest is pretty much history.
The song is about Players. It's about a person that makes Promises in the Dark (to get "what they want"), but when the Sun comes up the Promises fade away.
You’re almost there. It’s actually about the person being “played”. How they’re looking for a connection, looking for love, but for whatever reason, they always end up with the wrong person
Wrong. It's about Pat's and her's relationship. She was coming off a divorce, he had broken up with his his girlfriend . She had given up on love, yet found herself falling in love with her. She was a bit shy and slid him the lyrics to this song under his door.
Great reaction you two.... you can never do wrong with one of the best female rockers. Hard to believe she started out as an opera singer Fun Fact: Pat and her husband Neil Giraldo (the guitarist) just was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame after many many years of being nominated.
Another female rocker who made a big impact in my life. when her music first started coming out, I played her albums constantly. Something about the way she sings "Just when you think you've got it down" is so profoundly melancholy for me and still gives full body chills.
The guitarist is Pat's husband and major song writer for Pat. Pat is the real deal. She has the pipes and the presence. She doesn't need glitz and glamour to entertain. She is an awesome performer and an awesome person. She was finally inducted, from my understanding to the Rick Hall of fame. Thanks for reacting.
Her and the guitarist are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year. You really should watch their interview with Dan Rather. They are very grounded and madly in love. My wife of 38 years and I appreciate that as much as their music. They still perform and it’s a great show if you have the chance.
I always see the wheels spinning in Brad's head, every - single - video, like he's focused on deciphering the Rosetta Stone, while Lex just rocks out and enjoys the entertainment 😂
Pat Benatar is a FORCE! As a girl growing up in the 80s, I admired women like Pat, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson, Chaka Khan and Janet Jackson. There were obviously powerful women who came before, but as MTV was in its infancy, it was such a delight to watch these women have such a presence in the world right at your fingertips! It was just a very impactful time in my life that I'm so glad I was able to be a part of.
I love, I mean truly appreciate how the gentleman in the very beginning is truly trying to wrap his head around the message that is trying to be conveyed here. What a thoughtful person
Tiny powerhouse Pat!!! Definitely a huge 80’s icon, amazing vocal talent!! We all loved her, if you didn’t love her something was wrong with you! We Live For Love is just one of my many favorites of hers and yes don’t forget Neil, what a great guy he turned out to be, a wonderful husband to Pat all these years!
OMG. I’m so glad you did this. This is when Pat ruled. Sold millions of records, number 1 album, sold out shows. She was powerful. It’s her voice, the power and control. She’s hot. She’s the total package. Pat definitely gets the gold star.
Never again, isn't that what you said? You've been through this before An' you swore this time you'd think with your head No one, would ever have you again And if taking was gonna get done You'd decide where and when Just when you think you got it down Your heart securely tied and bound They whisper, promises in the dark Armed and ready, you fought love battles in the night But too many opponents made you weary of the fight Blinded by passion, you foolishly let someone in All the warnings went off in your head Still you had to give in Just when you think you got it down Resistance nowhere to be found They whisper, promises in the dark But promises, you know what they're for It sounds so convincing, but you heard it before 'Cause talk is cheap and you gotta be sure And so you put up your guard And you try to be hard But your heart says try again You desperately search for a way to conquer the fear No line of attack has been planned to fight back the tears Where brave and restless dreams are both won and lost On the edge is where it seems it's well worth the cost Just when you think you got it down Your heart in pieces on the ground They whisper, promises in the (one two three four) Dark
Apparently Neil held true to his promises. Guitar player and husband 4 over 40 years children and grandchildren he has holding true to his promises he made to her in the dark a long time ago ❤️
I saw her play live when I was about 10 years old. Hearing this still gives me chills (in 80+ degree weather no less). Definitely worth listening to more!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PAT BENATAR!! ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE COOLEST SINGERS PERIOD! SHE IS A PIONEER OF FEMALE SINGERS AND HER "CRIMES OF PASSION" ALBUM IS GREAT FROM BEGINNING TO END, WITH HER HUSBAND/GUITARIST NEIL GERALDO AKA "SPYDER". YOU TUBE HAS SOME VIDEOS OF HER PERFORMING THIS MONTH, JULY 2022... SHE IS STILL FLIPPING BAD ASS!!!!!!
Pat Benatar is a rock goddess! I saw them in concert in 1982-ish and she sounds as good IRL as she does on records. She and Nick deserve to be in the RnR HOF, not just for their music, but because of their commitment to one another and the 2 girls they raised. This is definitely a song about love, heartbreak and trying to protect your heart.
Pat and Joan are the main reasons why I love rock bands with female singers so much. Nothing sounds any better than a female voice singing on a rock song to me.
So SO! glad that Someone!! , U guys, finally got to the Real n' authentic Rockin' tunes, such as this from Pat B. and from the plethora of 'Rockers' & just well crafted tunes ; from at least her 1st three or four albums. She, her husband (Neil Geraldo-guitar) & band, really are up there with Heart and the like for quality female led classic heavy Rock. So kudos to U2 - A couple guaranteed suggests : 'Fire & Ice', 'Precious Time', 'Never Gonna Leave You' , 'I'm Gonna Follow You' ....to mention a few. ✌️
This song was from her album 'crimes of passion', which was all about abusive relationships (or maybe dependent/unhealthy ones). Other songs such as 'fire and ice', 'hit me with your best shot', 'hell is for children' were all on that masterpiece. one of the best. check out some of her others.
This album, Precious Time, was a rocker,..this song, was on the airwaves all over the place,..but when I got the album, I fell in love with Precious Time, title track, you so need to listen to that one, slower, but slow hard burn,..the lyrics, the theme for the most.part including this song, you know, I kinda lean towards betrayal,..give your heart, trust, get hurt,..but you get a feel of empowerment,..she delivers so well,..such a powerful voice, presence on stage,..even in a slow one, you still get an incredible guitar performance, solo, do check out whole album,..powerhouse band,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Great song!! Beautiful voice!! I always get chills when she hits that high note !! She trained as a opera singer in earlier days !! 👍👍❤️❤️ Neil was great as well !!
Under many reaction videos people write : " Prince is an underrated guitarist " ( It' s absolutely wrong ! ) but the one who is really underrated is Neil Giraldo. He' s more than good. ;)
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South florida! This is definitely one of my favorite Pat Benatar songs and the video is awesome. I remember when this came out when I was in high school. Pat Benatar is so hot! But seeing Neil Giraldo tearing it up on guitar, made me an instant fan. He's one of the most underrated guitar players in Rock. His guitar solos are almost perfect every time. And he's played on a lot of other people's music. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
I saw her tour for the second album and then I saw her again for their 35th Anniversary... both amazing shows.. she has most amazing voice and Neil Giraldo is one of the more underrated guitar players in the world. Amazing talent
great choice! Pat was my intro to Rock nRoll, she was great, she is great...back in the day, i thought she was 110 pounds of perfect with some big pipes, loved her, still do...she is a big part of my youth. Not about a one night stand, just a young and tumultuous relationship, a great song...the guitar player is Neil Geraldo,,,they eventually married.and are still together and currently on a "Mini tour"...She and Neil are true rockers, and a great Rock n Roll love story, that is not often enough told
She was an opera singer before she sang rock. Those are some notes she's singing there that would make Mariah Carey blush. She's the whole package.. and yes the guitarist is her husband - they're STILL together.
I don't know if you know this but the guy on stage to her right, playing the guitar, is her husband, Neil Giraldo . They've been together since Adam and Eve. Actually met in '79 and got married in' 82. He also plays Drums, piano and sings. I can't believe they are both in their late 60's. Time goes really fast as an adult. Treasure all of it. Facts: Benatar wrote this song with her guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. The song deals with trials and tribulations of past relationships and how they affect the one you're in now. Haven't we all had to tend the emotional scars left behind from whoever got there first? In the case of Giraldo and Benatar, things worked out quite well: They got married in a cow pasture in Maui in 1982, and have been married ever since. They've also continued their musical partnership as well, with Giraldo producing all of Benatar's next albums. Giraldo and Benatar were dating when they wrote this song, which was early in their musical partnership. In a Songfacts interview with Neil Giraldo, he explained: "That was a song that Patricia started first. I mean, I start probably 93% of them, and she'll jump in after I get it started. But she actually started writing that on an airplane. And then she put some words together, and she said, 'Here, try to do something with this thing.'
One of her BEST songs ever imo! 👍💪🤘It really highlights the strength of her AMAZING opera-trained vocal ability … especially when she sings that pitch-perfect high note on “try again…” 🤩🤩😍 Another CLASSIC song of hers that really showcases her vocals is “Fire and Ice” 👍👌🔥& 🧊 If you haven’t heard that one yet, CHECK IT OUT …you guys WON’T be disappointed! 😎😉
Neil Giraldo is her guitarist and husband. They married 3 years after they met. Pat said the first time she saw him, he was in the band whether he could play or not. Obviously, he can to this very day.

And it’s about goddamn time…. I remember I was about 10 when this album came out
Thanks..I know they’ve been together since the beginning.
Yep, they are a dynamic duo for sure. Pat and Neil should have been in the HOF decades ago.
2 beautiful daughters as well.
I voted 4 times a day for them to be in the rock hall. I grabbed everyone's phones i could
That’s so cool. I didn’t know the backstory…She has one of the best voices ever….
That guitarist is Neil Giraldo, Pat's husband. They are still going strong together.
Yep, almost 40 years
I heard they moved to Hawaii around 30 - 40 years ago. Are they still out there?
Spyder, legend!
@@tmr626 I believe they have moved back to the mainland.
Admired his guitar playing when I was a kid.
She's a 5 ft. powerhouse of a voice!
Yep! 👍 They didn’t call her the “Pint-sized Powerhouse” for nothing! 💪✊🥰
One of the two preeminent queens of rock music. Her and Ann Wilson. They're just better than everybody else.
Also Grace Slick who blazed the trail that the Wilson sisters and Pat followed. I wish Pat and Ann would record a duet one day.
Ann and Patty first and daylight second IMHO.
They were, until Floor Jansen joined Nightwish and astounded everyone who listened. I'm a fan of all three.
Truth
Totally agree
One of the greatest voices to grace Rock, ever.

Without Myron killing the drums, none of it matters. He damn well never sat down the entire concert. It was glorious to see live, and I will never forget it
Damn good drummer too.
Especially when he would run around the whole drum kit while still playing.....
He’s awesome! He looks like the actor comedian Martin Short. Lol
There's only one Myron Grombacher! Legend!
She has more balls than any male rock star who's appeared on the scene in the past 20 years, it's not even close!
First vinyl I ever owned! LOVE HER! So happy that she is being inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. FINALLY!
I still have mine!
@@friendtostfrancis me too!
She should’ve been in the RRHOF years ago.

I'm glad someone else knows this!😘👍👍

Benetar has one hell of a set of pipes! She sure can belt out a song!✌️❤️

The way she nailed the high note that lead into one of the best short guitar solos of all time! Perfection!
Great reaction you two.... you can never do wrong with one of the best female rockers. Hard to believe she started out as an opera singer

Underrated vocalist. She had/has some pipes and could belt as well as anyone then or now. Opera training comes in handy when holding a note in key.
Yes the moment i saw her performed Heartbreaker on tv on American Bandstand in summer of '79 i was hooked!

Never again, isn't that what you said?
You've been through this before
An' you swore this time you'd think with your head
No one, would ever have you again
And if taking was gonna get done
You'd decide where and when
Just when you think you got it down
Your heart securely tied and bound
They whisper, promises in the dark
Armed and ready, you fought love battles in the night
But too many opponents made you weary of the fight
Blinded by passion, you foolishly let someone in
All the warnings went off in your head
Still you had to give in
Just when you think you got it down
Resistance nowhere to be found
They whisper, promises in the dark
But promises, you know what they're for
It sounds so convincing, but you heard it before
'Cause talk is cheap and you gotta be sure
And so you put up your guard
And you try to be hard
But your heart says try again
You desperately search for a way to conquer the fear
No line of attack has been planned to fight back the tears
Where brave and restless dreams are both won and lost
On the edge is where it seems it's well worth the cost
Just when you think you got it down
Your heart in pieces on the ground
They whisper, promises in the (one two three four)
Dark
