It is not one of my top favourite songs, but is one of the most personal songs. For me, as a huge fan and also as someone who is in a very dark place, "damaged" I could say, this song is like a big, warm hug from the band. They know that lots of their fans are "damaged" in one way or another, and this invitation is giving me (and I guess all of us) a comfort and feeling that I can rely on them, that I am not crazy for feeling them so close to me... so many feelings from one song. What Rammstein does so amazingly is building a sense of community! Songs like this one, written directly for all these introverted melancholic overthinking social outcasts are the medicine for our hearts. I think It's not that common in the music industry, for a band to create a manifesto directly for its fans that says "We understand you". This music piece has a very special place in my heart - I even made a ringtone from the intro :) Btw, it doesn't mean that you should share your sadness with others (you can, if you want to) - it's more that you know, that there are others like you and you are not alone :)

It is not "against happiness", it is "towards happiness". Even Germans do the translation wrong, as it is a very poetic expression, not used anymore in day to day speach. This is how sophisticated Rammstein's lyrics are!

The wort 'trist' or here 'Tristen' for person is rarely used anymore, I think by 'modern' Germans. Sad is hardly hitting it. It's a very meaningful word, combining many moods: Sad, unhappy, bored, gray, meaningless, unimportant, disillusioned, not recognized... and many more feelings. Nobody wants to be 'trist'. The song is about the danger, that people in that are in that mood can be influenced by rat catchers to follow them to the dark side, by giving them a home in a tribe and giving their live some 'meaning'. That's why the rhythm is a march in 'Gleichschritt'.
Translation should be 'against luck' (gegen gluck), not 'against happiness'. Marching against the odds at achieving happiness, but still marching, and marching together. It's... nice.
