Between the three of us then we were spending around a thousand dollars a month for groceries and essentials that people normally buy with that. About another two thousand shared 3 ways for the accommodations, and internet etc. In October of 2022 my wife and I (being both retired) moved into a small new studio style condo we bought in a nice city in the Philippines, returning only recently to Surrey BC to spend the warmer months, ... and of course spend some time with family. Seeing what we're spending back in Canada I can honestly say I can't wait to get back to our home in the Philippines this autumn, because what we get in pensions doesn't any longer cover our monthly costs in Canada.

Nicole , how about you give the thrift store a chance? I live in Toronto as well (and boy I haven’t been at Vaughan Mills in years lol). I used to be so against thrift stores due to people commenting negatively such as “eww used stuff or eww maybe it has bad energy on it” but you know what. I gave it a chance slowly by slowly and now great im hooked! I give myself a budget to not over spend a certain amount but boy once i need something i check out the thrift store first and I got many great finds such as house slippers for $2.99, flip flops $2.99, books $2-$5, kitchen needs max $15 and less. Give it a try! Im not a minimalist yet but I have been on that journey for the past 4 years and used up or decluttered 70% of my stuff. Feels amazing and the less I have, the less I need , weirdly to say
I enjoy this type of video. I consider myself a more frugal person but I have spent quite a bit this year preparing for my 30th birthday vacation. I’ve always been more spendy when it comes to vacations. And now that I’m making a lot of money I’m more generous with gifts and charity than most people. I currently live in a very average city for the US on the east coast. Last month I spent $4,600. $1,700 on gifts and charity $1,400 on vacations (Vrbo rental) $800 on rent and utilities (rent a room in a house) $300 on shopping and debt payment $250 on car stuff $150 on food (took on the pantry/freezer challenge to reduce food spending recently)
Enjoying this channel - I’m a 51 year old man living just south of what must be Canada’s most expensive city (Vancouver). Even my Walmart and Trader Joe’s bills are getting ridiculous
Hey! RUclips just recently recommended one of your videos to me and now I’m watching a lot of your videos and really enjoying your content. It’s great to see other people that are in the same age group doing really well for themselves. Your content has been very encouraging to get me motivated in pulling myself out of my financial mess. Thanks again and keep going!
At 62 I still follow rules I learned from my parents like is this a need or a want, if it is a want what am I going to adjust or go without to afford this without using debt. I have no debt and don't use credit cards. I truly enjoy your content and catch little things I have incorporated into my life. I pass on your videos to my now grown children and they like your content as well. keep up the good work. 🤯💯
Hey :) You are one of my favorite people! I think it's just your attitude and that you also enjoy veggie/plant based foods. I'm a dog mom too, so you're very relatable to me. Having said that, I live in a small town somewhere in Kentucky. Rent is affordable at $850/month which I split between me and my gf of 4 years +. We have 2 cats & a dog, all the children we need. I spent about $250 - $300 on food per month. Which may seem like a lot for one person, but honestly? It's not in the economy. I give myself a little extra budget because I do not go out to eat much. I batch cook, and I have a healthy working pantry. I use the envelope system, I keep buffers in my account at all times. You never know. I cycle through those buffers when they get low and add a few months ahead at a time. I only spend on bills, and we've just moved into a new place so I am re-learning what those are. But I pay in advance to keep up with myself, n just make sure I'm covered. I do pay myself first, I go in pretty hard @ 40%-50% of my paycheck every 2 weeks. It's become a habit now, so it's something I'm used to at this point. I do keep my money separate from my gf but we do have 1 shared account that counts for our spendings out, so everything we put it is split together. That's our spendage money we both attribute to. It's house money & going out money & vacation funds. That's separate from my personals. I highly recommend doing it that way, but what works for us may not work for everyone. Hmmm.....oh I should also mention that when I do my envelopes I have everything in their categories and then I have a "back to bank" I switch money to when the money is spent. So I basically just paid myself back. Does that make sense? It sounds like I rambled. Idk, if you have questions just ask :D Hope it helped somebody.
@@AccordingtoNicole How did you keep him calm enough to allow you to clip his nails? I was owned by a older (18) cat (Jazz) some years ago who needed daily liquid meds via dropper and it was always a struggle to get Jazz to take her meds without spilling it on her jaw.
I’m glad you made this video. I’m continuously feeling as if I’m unreasonably spending but I also live in the gta and what you spent this week is very reasonable despite the large weekly cost.
Nicole, I am 75. I love watching your videos. I live in California, so as you can imagine, I feel your financial pain. I recently lived in Mexico for three years. I will probably be going back because the cost of living in the States is so outrageous. Many Canadians and American retirees have moved to Mexico because they can't live on their retirement in their homeland. Watching your videos is the highlight of my week. I won't say that goes to show how boring my life is. LOL!
…and many Mexicans are moving to Colombia or lower cost countries because they cannot afford their home cities anymore since US retirees made prices skyrocket 😢
A fellow Californian…Brenda I feel your pain, lol. Cali is crazy expensive. I love Nicole and her content- she is so realistic and practical ❤ ( I picked up an espresso machine- newish for $15.00 score!! Life is good 👍
I live in California and make in a month what you spent in a week 😂 I am super frugal and also have a side hustle re-selling stuff I thrift. But, honestly I don’t make much doing that. My rent is more than half of what my take home is. It’s ridiculous, as is the cost of groceries. I am like you and rarely go out, make my own coffee and pack a lunch every day. I just started a new job this past week where my income should double and I’m already daydreaming of what it will be like to not worry about every single thing I need. I’ve been a single mom for 21 years and have always done it alone. I learned to be minimal and honestly if my bills get paid, I’m content. I’m a huge introvert as well, but I’ve always found free and low cost ways to have fun and also give my daughter experiences. I enjoy your content. ❤
@@eaglenoimotoexactly, Americans are ruining many Mexican cities because their income it’s very law, prices are been push up by the foreigners, very sad, indeed.
Hi Nicole, this is my first video. This was actually refreshing to watch because I also think the cost of living in the GTA area has just gone way up in the last few years. We live in Brampton now but work in downtown Toronto and it what you spend in a week is actually pretty good for 1 person. Our groceries alone for 2 people is around $300 per week and that is not even the build stock up shopping, trying to eat healthy costs more than eating junk food. Look forward to more of your videos. Take care.
Michigan: very old brick farm house but paid for. Most of our expenses seem to be renovation stuff. I also drive to my mom's once a month , 140 miles, and gas is something else. Fixed expenses $1,340 per month. Food, gas, pets $900 per month. Home reno: painful! Around $4000 / month average. Just spent $30k on a new roof. We have considered moving to a newer house but we have 5 acres and I love country living. So we will stay here as long as we are physically able.
In our household we set up a monthly budget for every dollar going in and out. Some months are better than others and like you there are expenses that come up time to time that we don’t expect.
I live in East York, 2bdrm apartment. 2 adults, 1 large dog and our expenses are $2260.00 with a car including gas food insurance ect. We also have a summer rv spot which works out to an extra 600 per month throughout the year. If we moved apartments or rent would actually double for what we have in our area of the city. I'm thankful we have no debt and no car payments and live a frugal life, or entertainment is going to the camper 6 months of the year and loving being away from the city. Lol. Really enjoyed your video and totally agree you have to do things to treat yourself, there not everyday but you enjoy them when they happen!
That sharps drop off is actually really amazing and shows how progressive that area is. Sharps drop offs like those are part of a greater harm reduction strategy. Thank you for highlighting it.
I was laughing when you said the cleaning lady is you, your so creative, I thought that was so nice that you and your friend went to the beach. Later you said you were in a bad mood, I try to think of a sunset or something like that if I am in a bad mood and I try to repeat your favorite bible verse.
This video made me realize how much unnecessary purchases I make each week. Also, I think it’s incredibly useful to consider weekly spendings too, not only the monthly or daily ones. Thanks for the video Nicole, lots of love from Hungary!
Nichole I love all your content and I’m an old guy. These videos about your week are good and I like the way you chop them up and not drag them along each day. To the point and then you wrap them up. Good on you. Keep up the great work.

Also loved meeting your bff Leona! Please keep making these awesome videos, as no Sunday would be complete without hearing from you!!! ☕
hey nicole, i watched your video till the end and this was very helpful. I love your channel because your transparent about personal finance so keep going :)
I live down east..on da rock actually. I own my own home and business. I am living on approx 120.00 a week to cover all my expenses, not that I need to, but I live very basic and not in want of anything. Growing vegetables, raising chickens for eggs and meat, great supply of free fish and an acre or more of roaming space with ocean frontage with whales, sea gulls and icebergs from my window :) how many in Canada would enjoy hearing whales blow as they drift off to sleep! I did live in Toronto years ago and I am glad I did so I could appreciate what I left behind for those 5+ years, Yes by' we got it some good ere'for sure maid

Hey Nicole! Your advice on using the Spend Tracker app you recommended on one of your older videos really helped me see where my money was going. Tracking has made saving a little bit easier! Thank you. Love your videos!!!
I really enjoyed this vlog, Nicole. I could see my spending and thoughts behind it was on par with yours. I know what you mean about making social plans and then feeling tired afterwards or even regretting making too many.
1st time watching your video. You are down to earth and a very practical person. I have two grown children age 22 and 25. The youngest moved out just 2 months ago and watching this video made me think of his expenses as he also is a dog owner. Enjoyed watching! Just clicked the “like” button.
That is crazy expensive. I spend that total monthly for my husband and I and our adult children who contribute and buy their own things like clothes and toiletries. We live in Windsor
I've discovered your channel recently and I am grateful! You made me laugh so many times in this one, and you stole my heart with the cleaning lady joke! Living in the UK, started properly budgeting using google docs spreadsheet to see where the money goes. And a lot of the budget goes to groceries for sure!
Thanks for the video Nicole. I too live in Toronto, have been tracking my monthly expenses for over 13 years on an app (that just recently closed down). I spend on average about $750/week as a single person. I'm fortunate that my rental is under rent control, otherwise I think that everything else being equal, I'd be spending about $1000/week. I just learned that as frugal as I am, this same money in the Philippines, Turkey, Thailand, Poland, Panama would give me a very opulent lifestyle. I plan to slow travel once in FIRE in 4-5 years.
I really like the topics you choose for your videos. I find it very comforting to listen to you. Share your philosophy and ideas about the way you live your life. I have similar frugal habits
Whoa, last year I spent $15,000 total (USD) living in the heartland. My house is paid off, but still. And that included a nearly $2,000 vet bill. RIP little guy.
Thank you for being real I just returned from Toronto to Brooklyn NY wear I live. Love your city one of my favorite place to vacation After I say my credit car bill I wanted to cry Avery thing so expensive! Love the how you explain things in a real world way Nice video very helpful
I enjoy your contributions to my financial life. Thank you. I just retired. 66. Rural Maine. Housing per week is about $120. That includes internet and phone as well as utilities, taxes, and insurance. I have paid off my mortgage. Food is about $30/week. I do grow some of my own veggies, year round. God bless the pot growers and their grow tent technology. Works for lettuce, herbs, and cherry tomatoes too! Gasoline, about $15/week. The big one as a US retiree is health insurance. That’s about $82/week. Total regular monthly expenses are about $1000. I also use a monthly sinking fund system to cover irregular expenses and that’s about $800. I consider myself very frugal. I’m on my own, so no need to spend a lot on clothing, household, etc. So I live well below my means, even as a retiree, and live the lifestyle that I prefer. Oh, and I’m on a lake, so during the summer months, free swimming!
Do you have an Aldi superstore in Toronto Nicole ? That Vans Outlet looks amazing, I love Vans. i'll have to check it out when I visit Toronto next summer.👍
$3500.00/mo. housing cost for a single person? That's insane! You need to divide that vet bill by 12 if it's a 3 month supply. Thanks for showing those of us on the prairies how crazy TO is!
Her housing cost alone is higher than all of my spending combined each month. Hopefully, she’ll profit off that house even with all the interest she’d be paying for it

I have enjoyed Your videos and this is my first comment , my wife and I have been married for 45 years and lived a similar life as you. I built a log home back in 1985 and paid off the mortgage in 1990. We never had a finance charge for anything, always paid for what we need in cash. and invested enough money early in life to travel 4 to 5 times a year. We live in northern NJ where the cost of living is the highest in the US.

Vets and their medicine is very expensive here in Australia...... for example It cost me Aus$800 for my small dog to have his teeth cleaned and a small growth removed under anesthetic.
What a small world it really is, I know that road (6th line) up North you're on at 3:10. Next time I am at the "happiest place on earth" I'll have to keep my eyes open to say Hi.. And I am pretty sure I know that pharmacy in south western Thornhill too, one of the few place in the region to get pet meds that are cheap.
Hi Nicole, I like how you show how to handle finances, as I have a problem controlling this aspect to life. Keep the vids coming about this topic, it inspires everyone I think when spending their money. Also, I'm jealous how spotless you keep your apartment, Lol!
In the past, I think most people who were spending themselves into trouble were doing it with luxuries. Your video reinforces my impression that this has changed in the last few years. It's now the increased cost of necessities that are getting most people into difficulty.
Nice video. I have found that the sales my local grocery stores run are often cheaper than wally world. I have noticed that the sales and discounts are less than the used to be. Good Luck, Rick
Nicole, Loved the casual vlog video, was entertaining to me ( also live alone and introverted). Being able to compare individual lifestyles in different geographical locations is appealing. Everyone should have a method for tracking monthly expenses food, transportation, and housing are usually the largest budget items so focusing efforts to reduce these can make the biggest dent in your budget to free up additional money for debt and investing. Love the channel. Wishing you the Best…😅
I so enjoyed this video, feels like we are hanging out (not in a creepy way), lovely to see you enjoying the fruits of your labor with an occasional SB coffee and new lamps. Your housing is definitely more than mine, small town Northern California. The balance of your expenditures were about right. (Similar). Love your sweet dog!
Sharps drop offs are a good thing. What’s happening in Barrie is a step towards actually trying to manage a complex issue that affects many human lives.

$1,700 on gifts and charity
$1,400 on vacations (Vrbo rental)
$800 on rent and utilities (rent a room in a house)
$300 on shopping and debt payment
$250 on car stuff
$150 on food (took on the pantry/freezer challenge to reduce food spending recently)
In the past few years, that I discovered on RUclips videos like yours of frugal people I did the most saving myself. Thanks a lot.
The finance content is awesome and all. But I"M HERE for the Levi tub content! And side-lay nail clipping bonus? What a cutie pie.
He’s the nicest
@@AccordingtoNicole How did you keep him calm enough to allow you to clip his nails? I was owned by a older (18) cat (Jazz) some years ago who needed daily liquid meds via dropper and it was always a struggle to get Jazz to take her meds without spilling it on her jaw.
I’m glad you made this video. I’m continuously feeling as if I’m unreasonably spending but I also live in the gta and what you spent this week is very reasonable despite the large weekly cost.
I'm watching. Thanks for your frugal insight. Please make more.
@@eaglenoimoto Mexico's economy is booming because of us.
Take care.
Levi is so good in the bathtub! He looks so calm!
We all love our pets unconditionally!
I would bet it's way less expensive to fix your place the way you want it, rather than sell and buy something else.
STAY PUT! I hope you felt the love in that.
In our household we set up a monthly budget for every dollar going in and out. Some months are better than others and like you there are expenses that come up time to time that we don’t expect.
I appreciate this type of video, and after a splurge weekend I had it’s a good reminder for me to get back on track.
I enjoyed this video. Informative. Entertaining. Good job.
Radical idea. Don't shoot up.
Dang that's a nice looking crib! // remember all prices quoted here are in CN dollar. So the CN $272.32 dog products bill is US $196.26 as of 8/4/24.
I just about had a heart attack when you said you hired a cleaning lady 😂 I love your videos.
💅🏼
me too! I was like, this has to be a joke unless they're also going to do something major like repairs or painting.
Same 😂
Yeah, she had a good poker face on that one
😂😂😂
Nichole I love all your content and I’m an old guy. These videos about your week are good and I like the way you chop them up and not drag them along each day. To the point and then you wrap them up. Good on you. Keep up the great work.
Yes! This format is great!
Hi Nicole! Thanks for another awesome & enjoyable video...I especially love the music that plays while you are out and about. I admire your frugal & practical mindset, as well as your sense of humor. Also loved meeting your bff Leona! Please keep making these awesome videos, as no Sunday would be complete without hearing from you!!! ☕
hey nicole, i watched your video till the end and this was very helpful. I love your channel because your transparent about personal finance so keep going :)
I love everything you post. I always get some value information in every video. Thank you.
Hi Nicole, I’m Canadian living abroad for about 20 years. I am coming back for 3 months to see if it’s a suitable idea for us to move the family to Canada. Your video was already a useful start. I start watching your channel recently and I love it. Continue your great work !
This is not boring. It is interesting.
For me, the value of this video lies in the motivation. It makes me consider my spending habits. This is good content for me.
When you opened the door as the cleaning lady I laughed so hard. You’re adorable 😂
We talk about how expensive it is to live on a regular basis - for the basics and a few extras - keep going - we love it!
As an Australian, i am amazed Canada can get into the 30's celcius.
Cool !... i mean Groovy❤
I think many people outside of Canada are shocked that we get such high temperatures. We really do have extremes in our weather conditions.🥰
2:20 groovy music. I’m digging it. 🎶
Whoa, last year I spent $15,000 total (USD) living in the heartland. My house is paid off, but still. And that included a nearly $2,000 vet bill. RIP little guy.
So sorry for your loss
Thank you for being real
I just returned from Toronto to Brooklyn NY wear I live.
Love your city one of my favorite place to vacation
After I say my credit car bill I wanted to cry Avery thing so expensive!
Love the how you explain things in a real world way
Nice video very helpful
I actually did like this video Nicole. Keep them coming.
Best description ever of those supermarket plastic bag bagels. “A hate crime” I’m gonna use that if you don’t mind. 🙏
Those bagged bagels are the same ones that were in the bulk bin the previous day.
😂
agreed - they lack the flavour and chewiness of real bagels
Do you have an Aldi superstore in Toronto Nicole ? That Vans Outlet looks amazing, I love Vans. i'll have to check it out when I visit Toronto next summer.👍
Love your videos, Nicole! Very creative and entertaining! Keep up the good work. You're so smart and funny as hell!😂
$3500.00/mo. housing cost for a single person? That's insane! You need to divide that vet bill by 12 if it's a 3 month supply. Thanks for showing those of us on the prairies how crazy TO is!
Most vets won’t allow that with prescriptions unfortunately.
Her housing cost alone is higher than all of my spending combined each month. Hopefully, she’ll profit off that house even with all the interest she’d be paying for it
That is with taxes, insurance, utilities. Not just her mortgage
@@justmejo9008 Yes, we know that, that's the definition of housing costs.
@@rozinant1237 “we know that” Do you have a mouse in your pocket or🤔do you know for everyone watching.. because I didn’t know it included everything. 😘
Been using ag1 too, and I notice a big improvement in my overall health and mental outlook.
rational life is entertaining. value. thank you
My policy for client cancellations; less than 4 hrs notice, $45 fee.
Enjoyed this vid thanks Nicole.
I have $1200 in bills just this week, before food etc. No extras.
I live alone w a mortgage.
Keep doing you. ❤ Australia 🇦🇺
Love the video - it helps put things in perspective and doesn’t make me feel like I’m being too cheap or frugal
The happiest place on earth is definitely not wallyworld 😂 I hope you gave your cleaning lady a big tip for do a great job and even bathing Levi 😂 you are hilarious Nicole. Love your videos. Especially when you show real life stuff. Keep up the good work.
OMG, your videos are getting better every day! Love ya.
Yes, I think your videos are valuable. 👍👍🇨🇦😎
I enjoyed this video, I like the day in the life style content.
I enjoy the casual videos. Thanks.
Yay! Love your videos so much! The way you live is inspiring.
Hi Nicole, I like how you show how to handle finances, as I have a problem controlling this aspect to life. Keep the vids coming about this topic, it inspires everyone I think when spending their money. Also, I'm jealous how spotless you keep your apartment, Lol!
Great video Nicole!!! And thanks for the Wednesday bonus video!!!
Loved it. Thank you
In the past, I think most people who were spending themselves into trouble were doing it with luxuries.
I look forward to seeing your videos. Love Levi too
You are you and that is why I follow you!
I'm curious now, so I'll be checking my expenses this week. Thanks for the push!
I so enjoyed this video, feels like we are hanging out (not in a creepy way), lovely to see you enjoying the fruits of your labor with an occasional SB coffee and new lamps. Love your videos, click immediately when they pop up in feed, keep up the good work, sending you & Levi lots of love from the lower 48.
For some reason I watched this! And enjoyed it! 😅🎉
Your housing is definitely more than mine, small town Northern California. The balance of your expenditures were about right. (Similar). Love your sweet dog!
Sharps drop offs are a good thing. What’s happening in Barrie is a step towards actually trying to manage a complex issue that affects many human lives.
I am 67 and live in Sweden and I love your videos 🥰
Love these videos!
This was an eye opener for me! This is far more than most retirees in the UK have to live on including the state pension. It is far more than I live on.
