Busting out the Good Charlotte eh? 😂 Ironically I got isolated from friends when they went to universities with high tuition costs but I went to a cheaper university and graduated without student loans. Merely not having loans to pay off made it impossible to discuss anything tangential to money with them despite my lower income because of their anxiety about the loan payments.

Great video Nicole, thanks for posting, I agree with you, frugal is necessary for most, but when it comes to buying safety and quality it will cost $$, but - like you - I have found in specific items it’s well worth it. The ear pods, my choice was Apple, my sons - bought at the same time were - ? Another supposed high end brand. Turned out his did not fair well and are replaced with Apple. Another one I spend on is quality tires and winter tires, having a family of four I’ve always bought average cars. But I spent $$$ on my BMW motorcycle. And I’ve seen the light for good sun glasses as well. First time subscriber, loved the video and will be watching more.

Lower working class boy here that happens to have done alright. I have an in built fear of posh people so much so that I live in a neighbourhood which is way below where I could because I feel safer there and know my neighbour is looking out for me. I keep my head down and don't show off at all and everyone is super nice. In the posh neighbourhoods I've lived in, all they do is squeak about how they saw a scary looking person on their Ring doorbell but don't talk to each other unless they're comparing what car they have or their latest ridiculous holiday. They all hate each other as much as they hate poor people.

The idea that billionaires could solve world hunger like this is absurd. Let’s take Elon Musk for example, Elon doesn’t have billions of dollars that he’s hoarded away in a bank account or vault. He owns businesses that employ people. If he were to sell those businesses to get the billions to feed the hungry someone else would have to buy those businesses taking the exact same amount of money out of the system and away from other businesses that create jobs and employ people. If you were to completely liquidate one of these businesses to get the money you would end up with hundreds of thousands of people loosing their jobs, retirement savings and investments and likely the ripple effects would have a devastating effect on the economy. Why do people with no money always think they know better than those with it how they should manage it?

I normally like your content, but I can’t possibly disagree with this one more. The kindest, most generous and nicest people I know are all people who are wealthy. I think intelligence is what drives wealth. I would actually argue the opposite of what you’re saying is true the most entitled., inconsiderate and rudest people are almost always poor people who think everyone owes them the world. Also, the idea that someone who has earned their well using it to afford some opulences somehow bad is completely absurd.

I have not dealt with the truly wealthy but throughout my 55 years I have observed that the kindest, friendliest and most caring people are the mid to upper middle class. I grew up lower middle class and the people around us were typically just nasty, mean, angry people. The schools i went to had a lot of poor and mostly lower class to lower middle class and it was the same way. Gangs, drugs, fights, theft, single moms. For my own safety i ensured i was in the honors classes as much as i could. I got out of there and never looked back. High school was wild. Kids were like feral animals. My first experience outside that environment was when i took a summer class at the local community college. I was floored that students came in and quietly sat until class started. I could not believe what i was seeing. I was used to flying spitwads and erasers and people chasing each other, knocking over desks before the start of class. It was truly an eye opening moment when i realized that the world i knew was not the way it was everywhere.

Isolation is certainly a part of it; but I also think it has to do with lack of scruples. An ethical salesperson, for example, might talk a customer out of a bad purchase. But a more successful salesperson is cut-throat; they'll talk people into buying things they can't afford. At the end of the day, that can make unscrupulous people more successful -- and more insufferable. Thankfully, it's not across the board. But it is a thing that happens.

It's poor people who are A-holes in most cases. My best friend was fine until I became better off financially. I told him I was thinking about going on a 3 or 4 night (cheap) carnival cruise. The things he said to me are disgusting. Of course he blamed me after I defended myself.

I'm glad I don't have any jealous friends. At least, they don't seem like it to me. The worst reaction I've gotten to me talking finances was one friend said he didn't want to hear me call myself broke when he knew that was objectively false. I don't know if it made him feel worse or if he thought it would make me feel worse, but I did humor him for that. I helped him build a diversified portfolio on M1, and got him to set it on automatic. On his own, he started using YNAB. It's a good mutual relationship where we both want better for each other. ❤

My mother came from a wealthy family of nobility (in Germany) but was herself no longer wealthy, although she was very good at making people *think* she had money. She treated her "inferiors" with the kind of benevolent condescension she had seen modeled by her "old money" relatives, but she was never rude. She habitually over-tipped (even though she couldn't afford it), and was extremely conscious of what people thought of her. Money -- having and then not having it -- had created a kind of lifelong trauma for her. She was very secretive about her assets (fearing everyone would envy her), and it took her passing away for her children to discover how little she actually had. It was really quite sad. Through a great stroke of fortune, I am now much more wealthy than my mother's family ever was, and I try very hard not to let money become trauma. The best way not to become arrogant or entitled is to give a lot of it away. In the words of Thornton Wilder, "“Money is like manure; it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging young things to grow.”

I think it's just a classic case of power corrupts because money is well, power. And it can also apply to other things such as a person's beauty, relations, or any other advantage that they have in life that makes them behave like an out of touch sociopath, even if they have good intentions. Take Light from the anime Death Note for an example. I think Plato even touched on this over 2000 years ago with a story about a common man who finds a magic inviso ring, and how that one advantage allowed him to get away with ANYTHING and he pretty much became a psychopath who terrorized wherever he went. Human nature be crazy.

OMG THIS!!! My then rich (now ex and broke) brother in law scammed me not once but twice and my family forced me to let it slide away. Long story short he “fake” hired me by making a fake work contract so he didn’t have to pay taxes on me. Then he promised me to rent me his apartment for a good price if I would pay for renovations. $3k later (all my savings since I made $1250/months), he told me nothing was set in writing and thanked me for the renovations. He knew he could get away with it because I have no money for lawyers and my whole family loved their “rich” son in law so they had someone to boast about at the big family Christmas party. When I called him out, I was portrayed as the poor jealous female dog. He was a general jerk and se**ually harassed many women and had multiple affairs. Such a great guy according to my whole family…

In order to get power under capitalism, it requires ambition and adaptability. The most ruthless and amoral are quite good at that. Capitalism punishes altruism. People punish altruism. A lot of people want a helper but all they do is take, they don’t replenish what was taken or increase the wealth. They are EXPENSES & LIABILITIES.

The founder of the company I work for (a very rich man) was behind me and several other cars at a red light about 10 years ago. He wanted to turn right, but was going to have to wait for the light to change. Instead, he drove the car up on the sidewalk, went past us and made his right turn. This behavior was common for him I was told after relaying what I'd seen to others at work. He definitely felt entitled, that much was obvious. He also worked extensively with charitable organizations, museums and other entities trying to improve things in the city. People are complicated, that much I've learned over the years. Very, very few are 100% bad or good.

The confusion on taxes is often down to payroll using software that takes deductions as if that paycheque is their normal income and thus it thinks you underpaid based on your year to date and overwitholds to compensate. You often can end up in a dead zone where your take home ends up being the same as if you didn’t take the overtime or promotion even though you’ll get it all back at tax time. Likewise promotions can often and especially in the US be offset because of unpaid overtime if you’re a salary worker in specific industries.
