If something is bought for business use only, you can write it off -- of the income that is produced by the business. Canadian income tax is higher than in the U.S., but as a U.S. example, if you're in the 22% bracket and spend $1000 for business equipment, your tax on the income from that business would be reduced by $220. After an above-the-line adjustment, self-employment tax is approximately 15% in addition to the 22%, so the total tax reduction on a $1000 purchase of business equipment in the U.S. would be ~ $370. That's great, but the equipment still cost you $630. It always makes sense to pay less, even for items that can be written off.
Expensive electronics are subject to depreciation in Canada. You can't just write them off. Laptops must be depreciated over 8 years. Then consider that it's 50% for personal use. So this year I could write off $198 for a total refund of about $50. I'll try not to spend it all in one place.
@@AccordingtoNicole Yep, depreciation schedules are out of touch with reality. In the U.S., computers are a 5-year property, meaning that if you "capitalize" them, you must depreciate them over six calendar years. In the U.S., under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 179, you can "expense" 100% of capital assets (instead of depreciating them over a period of time) up to a certain limit. That limit was always more than enough to cover the cost of a computer after personal computers stopped being so expensive that you would think twice about needing one. I haven't been paying attention to it the latest several years and the amount you can write off (in the U.S.) seems to have gone to the moon. My MacBook Pro from 2012 runs better than the newest macs out there despite Apple no longer supporting it and even browsers no longer supporting it. Installed Linux and the latest version of every browser continue to work and the machine is still up to date.
You should use an external hard drive for two reasons. One being that you don't want to store everything on the computer and two you should have a backup in case of a hardware failure. You can purchase an external hard drive pretty cheap.
If you get an external hard drive for Mac, partition it in half for Time Machine and half for general storage. This is hard to do later, so thinking about it up front is huge.
@@ellenshealthykitchen The Disk Utility app (comes with your mac) should have a tab labeled "Partition" once you've selected the external device. Hard to explain in a you-tube comment without being able to post links or photos -- look up "mac partition external drive time machine".. cheers
I bought an iPad Pro 2020 for ca 50% of the retail price as it was a demo product(it turned out to probably be a substitute received from Apple). I bought it at a campaign my creditcard company had, where they gave 15% extra discount. I think looking at refurbished or buying demo products sometimes can be very affordable and especially if you have some kind of loyalty bonus. I have bought most of my tech the last year, usually at a price from 50-70% of retail.
to add another tip to getting a car it’s usually better to get a car near the end of the year and get an older car (not old old but like the year you’re in or the year before) bc they’re trying to make more room for the newer cars to come on the lot!! also chances are you can knock down the price a little bit too. My mom was with me when I got my car and i told myself and her that I’m not going to spend any more than $300 for a car payment, and we managed to kick it down from like $400 or something to $298. just a tip for anyone looking to get a car lol
Nicole, can you please make a video on things like taxes and write-offs? Also, the tax code is so convoluted--where can one find all this information in a easy-to-digest way?
Nicole a good video 100 percent, but including the value of selling things that are no longer needed by you distorts things a little. Some companies have an outlet store where items are discounted for many reasons such as customer return or clearance. Also don't buy the latest and greatest model unless there is a reason. Buy this year's model a few months ahead of when the new one is expected
I’m working with a 2017 MacBook Air for editing for my channel I hear you on those limitations. I had to use external hard drive but I’m also considering a new MacBook. Thanks for this video. Really helpful. 😊
It’s crazy how long that globe was spinning for such a simple task. I wonder if the same action was done when the Mac was new if it would have taken that long. Also you said it was a spinning HD…. I can’t believe any laptop at that price in 2019 did not come with an ssd installed
Hey thanks that was great! I don’t think it’s as easy over here in Australia but def will remember that next time I buy something big 👍and I feel your pain editing!! That’s what’s killing me as editing even the easiest video takes forever!!!
Nicole I too to the same thing for example I like ASUS gaming laptops and they cost quite a bit of $$$ around $1200 so I decided to find out when it is the best time to buy laptops which is during the back-to-school time when they do promotions which means drops and discounts around 20% to 30% which I love then when I go to pick up and bring cash with me as I know the price with taxes and then when I go to the store to buy (old school here and privacy fanatic just a bit) and then I talk to the manger to make another $100 less of the product as I will pay cold hard cash and they usually go for it as they want to sell plus when I research on the laptop I need to have I always go a bit more on the specs so the laptop is faster or more powerful so in the future if I decide to do more power hungry activities the laptop will be able to handle it last me a bit longer maybe 3 years or more so that what I do in Canada as well PS: in 2022 when I brough my new ASUS gaming laptop for $800 when the full price was $1200 which equals to $400 in saving which I then save that money for my next ASUS gaming laptop :)
Great job on that Mac. Maybe you already know the Apple con of charging you several hundred percent on memory and hard disk? You could easily have found a similarly specced windows laptop for half the price of your Mac. And spending just 5 minutes you'll learn how to upgrade ram, ssd and cpu on your windows machine yourself. But, if you want to Mac, you must pay (dearly) to play.
If you make proxy videos for your workflow, you can make crazy detailed edits it lets you edit with basically 144p videos that then takes the edit and applies it to your 4K content. Thats what I did and I used my 2013 MacBook air with 4GB of RAM and edit 4k video for my clients for6 years. I actually bought the 2019 MacBook pro like you and still edit using proxy files since it lets me do my whole workflow so much quicker and then at the end change from proxy to original and boom, EXPORT.

Here in Europe coupons usually have a little text on them stating: only one per product/does not stack with other promotions... there was a guy even here who figured out that some soup brand gave a 3 dollar discount on every item they sold, and one of their items happened to be priced at 2.99, so he ended up getting 1000 of these cans for free... made his 15 minutes of fame countrywide that way. I wouldn't spend that much money on an Apple product anyhow, I think it's overpriced crap, typing this on a refurbished 150 dollar chromebook from Samsung that will be a total win if it lasts me 2 years or longer... the previous one was new with some discount for 300 dollar and lasted about 4 years... one downside on my purchase, I got it 50 dollars cheaper because I took a German keyboard, a quertz, not querty, but I set the keyboard to my usual setting and saved 50 dollars because the German market was more abundant so cheaper in that particular store...
@@CeeTee469 I doubt it, the specs are also very limited, the appeal for me is that it's rather safe and stable, but it has little more than the functions you have on an android smartphone with a bigger screen and a decent keyboard... As soon as you said "write off," I was expecting that clip! 🙂
Great video. Has me thinking a lot more
Howdy Nicole, I found your videos last week and have been watching while I have lunch/coffee, great stuff! Thanks for sharing
Just found your channel and subscribed. Loved the video. :)
I'm watching this on my 2009 Macbook haha! I do what I can myself to keep it online. I also have a 2004 Power mac that is still going strong, but offline. Depending on your needs, they are worth the extra money. I used both for my photography hobby and paid work.
Brilliant, not too shabby at all, well done Nicole, thanks for sharing. 🤩❤
Well done. Thank you for sharing these tips.
I agree that you didn't have enough resources for video editing. The processor speed hard drive size and RAM is very important. Better to have too much, than too little. Always check the minimum specs for the software you are going to run. yoU will save yourself the hassle. Good luck Nicole.😊
I agree! I would choose Either a Windows PC or a Linux PC with Kdenlive or DaVinci Resolve. I'm not paying Apple tax :)
I use Inshot on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro to edit videos. Sometimes it's lagging.
But the level of my videos is low)
And this video is great!
@@ArthursHD more like dumb tax
So what stops you from, say on a yearly basis, buying such a laptop with the discounts and all that, and flipping it?
I appreciate hearing your tips. My husband wants a battery-powered leaf blower for his birthday and I'm trying to see if I can get a good discount on one.
This was impressive AF! Thank you for sharing this - it never occurred to me that I could save so much money like this! Also, more Levi content please. I freaking love him. lol
I freaking love him too. And I tell him everyday.
Wow! This is so helpful! Thanks Nic☀️le!
Great tips and good on you for getting that amazing price. I heard that applying for a lot of credit cards can affect your credit rating though and wonder what your opinion is on that?
Very informative! Thanks
what does a writeoff mean
I want to do the credit card churning still don't know how to approach it. Perhaps there is a resource that explains it in more detail?
Good episode Nicole. I wonder if the new credit card application can affect your credit score if done too frequently? I fully understand that your tricks are for major buying tough.
Nicole, you should have a TV show!
Old media is dead, youtube is the new tv
@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 Yeah, that was classic boomer comment. "You should have a TV show!" "You should be on the cover of a magazine!" "I'll pick you up in my carriage!"
Young people are no longer watching TV.
Nicely Done!! ✅
I thought I was over-researching things before buying them. This is on another level :D
Interesting video.
Hahahahaaa it's actually like a sick game for us too. We love to see how much we can save on groceries and things but I have to say I live your approach. Way to go, good job 👏
Give that lady a prize!
Love getting a new credit card for points on big purchases!
Good stuff, thanks.
Don't transfer your old intel Applications. Use the more efficient Applications compiled for Apple Silicon, like the ones pre-installed on your new machine, so that it does not need to be translated (Rosetta 2) i.e. slow.
I needed to get a new catalytic converter, so I got a credit card, paid for it with that (had the money to pay it off right after, but I'm using the intro 0% APR to spread the payment), immediately hit the sign on bonus, and put it towards a new tv which will replace the one that coincidentally died around the same time.
Good job on your discount. It took a bit of planning but you managed to dodge most of the Apple Tax 😁
My MacBook Pro from 2012 runs better than the newest macs out there despite Apple no longer supporting it and even browsers no longer supporting it. Installed Linux and the latest version of every browser continue to work and the machine is still up to date.
This was super helpful
You should use an external hard drive for two reasons. One being that you don't want to store everything on the computer and two you should have a backup in case of a hardware failure. You can purchase an external hard drive pretty cheap.
I have one for storage.
If you get an external hard drive for Mac, partition it in half for Time Machine and half for general storage. This is hard to do later, so thinking about it up front is huge.
@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 What is Time Machine?
@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 can you say more about how this would be done?
@@ellenshealthykitchen The Disk Utility app (comes with your mac) should have a tab labeled "Partition" once you've selected the external device. Hard to explain in a you-tube comment without being able to post links or photos -- look up "mac partition external drive time machine".. cheers
Awesome! thanks for tips and tricks : )
Have you done a tour of your home audio setup? It looks like you could have some good stuff back there!
Is credit card churning bad for your credit score though?
to add another tip to getting a car it’s usually better to get a car near the end of the year and get an older car (not old old but like the year you’re in or the year before) bc they’re trying to make more room for the newer cars to come on the lot!! also chances are you can knock down the price a little bit too.
Good one.
As a one man plumbing contractor..... cash talks.
I'm impressed !
This was a lot to go through. Your time has value. I love what you did to save money. I think that your money per hour (value) is worth more than what you saved. I love your channel, but I am buying time freedom
Time spent:
Navigating to EDU store - 10 sec
Applying for Amex - 2 mins
Talking to Amex CS - 3 mins
Listing iPad and old Mac for sale - 5 mins
Do you make more than $2000 in 10 mins? Because I don't. This lazy mindset of everyone thinking their time is SO valuable and everything is SO difficult is nothing but delusion.
@@AccordingtoNicole you are an amazing woman. You have made fantastic decisions in your life. I am sure that you have financial freedom. I am a lot older than you so I want to spend my money and buy back my time. I have had one credit card for 23 years. Simplicity in life is my goal. Your channel is amazing and I am going to give you a shout out on my channel. I really love your channel, I am just too lazy for this 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

I am currently looking to buy a new PC laptop, so this was very timely!
Refurbished is the way to go. You can approach 50 percent off of list price without the coupon hassles.
I am still using an 2015 apple macbook Pro... (with 16GB Ram, which probably has saved my sanity.) I am familiar with the occasional ball of death (it will appear exactly when I have an urgend deadline... )
I have lots of strategies to overcome the hurdles in my workflow.
great video. I also think buying refurbished or second hand a great way to get bang for buck
I recently wanted a new phone. I bought a used one off of amazon instead of buying a new one full price. The only down side is that my phone wont get as many software updates because its older. But its about $1000 cheaper then buying a new one. I didnt have to sell any of my stuff or jump threw any other hoops.
I had a macbook in college and after 3 years I was unable to upgrade to the more recent OS because the hardware wasn't "good enough". Planned obsolescence.
Side note, need more CUDA cores!
My mom is still using a 2011 MacBook and it still upgrades no problem.
@@AccordingtoNicole I bought mine in the summer of 2006 and tried to upgrade between 2009 and 2010. No dice. Maybe things changed.
3rd comment (sorry, I am turning into a verbal avalanche) YES: I regularly stack savings, credit card offers, discounts, Rakuten & Honey coupons, and whatever other tricks I can find.) Thank you for sharing yours. I skipped a few sections as I am working on something and can't listen to everything right now, but I'll be back to play the video from start to finish later. - I have bookmarked it in my 'videos to re-open' tab..)
“128 gig standard spinning hard drive thingamabobber”
The moment I realized Nicole knows just as much about computers as I do
And that she shouldn't build her own PC as others suggest!
Can you do proper video editing on a chromebook? Right now I'm looking for a reasonable windows laptop for that purpose.
@@CeeTee469 I doubt it, the specs are also very limited, the appeal for me is that it's rather safe and stable, but it has little more than the functions you have on an android smartphone with a bigger screen and a decent keyboard... I have also no idea what kind of apps they have for that purpose that run on android...
Please can You do a video why write of is not good …The way You always do, the smart way. I kinda know this but I would like to hear your opinion why. I Think this would be a GREAT topic
Very impressive, and kinda similar to what I’d do for a big purchase. However, in the UK pretending to be a student to get student discount is technically fraud… So I’d tell most people about the Apple refurb store, I wonder if the spec you went for which was a good choice by the way would have been even cheaper on refurb?
12:25 Where did your dog go? 😊
I am soo glad that I have no need to do any video editing. $3900 full price & even with your sizable money saving, it's still really expensive. I bought my laptop new on Ebay & paid about £320 3x years ago. Still running okay so all good. Also managed to transfer most of my oldie but goodie software, so no additional software costs.
I bet your new Apple laptop would finish my computer tasks before I'd even started; it's soooo fast - lmao.
Oh my! Love it - i play that game too lol
