- The #BMW4Series was completely redesigned for 2020 and with a new coupe, we knew a convertible was right around the corner. The 2022 #M440iConvertible we tested for a week stickered for over $75,000. The #4seriesconvertible goes back to a soft top this year and the #M440i comes standard with RWD and a turbocharged 382 HP I-6 engine.

I’ve already warmed up to the grille! I actually love it way more than I thought initially. I like how BMW is going towards having multiple shapes and sized grilles that are all still undeniably BMW for Audi all of their grilles are all the same on all the cars.

BMW needs this grill nowadays otherwise it would not stand out but look rather average. I love it! It gives it an edge and makes it looks equally as stylish as a merc.
Supposedly there is a hard panel inside the soft top which is why it feels like a hard top and why it's so quiet. Also that gray divider comes out in the trunk to expand storage as long as the top is up.

I love the front. It looks tough…. but I just can’t believe they went back to the soft top! I have a 2018 440 with M-sport package and I have loved it. Getting near 40k miles so Ive started looking at newer convertibles but I DONT want a soft top! I had an M3 with a soft top and an Audi S5 with a soft top and they show wear no matter how well you care for them. Also the road noice with a soft top is much worse…. I love my 440 with retractable hard top and I loved my z4 with retractable hard top long ago as well…. Super bummed about this….
Just go look at it. It’s not what you think of as a soft top. It’s super nice and unbelievably quiet.

Just received my 2022 M440i convertible and I was somewhat disappointed that my car was missing couple of things and I was wondering if you can help clarify why.
1- why the M440 does NOT have fog lights where as the 430 convertible does? (based on pics)
2- why the M440 convertible does not have gesture control (even though it is listed under the premium package which I have)?

Key question- is it comfortable? The angled headrests look like they’ll cause cervical spine pain. And does that bulging door storage bin reduce lateral leg room and push against your left leg?

You can get ventilated seats with the Mocha color interior also. I ordered one back in January 2022. It's currently in transit.
That’s weird when I “build” them on the website the only seat color that it lets you do ventilated seats with is black. Either way I always go with the brown… looks by far the best.
All the 4 Series want's for Christmas is it's two front grills!
The car is actually a great package. B58 has Porsche level of performance, and you can find them in the 50k price range, used. Amazing.
If I would be looking for a Convertible it would be at the top of my list.
Just for future reference for BMW's, after it says launch control active, hold it a bit longer because it builds boost if you hold it for a second or 2 after it says it is active
Two things. One, I have a 2012 Mercedes E350 convertible. I suspect that the panel that leaves a little space at the floor of the trunk can be moved out of the way to make more room in the trunk - at the expense of being unable to drop the top. That’s how the MB’s trunk works. Also, it is amazing how quiet these convertibles can be at highway speeds with the top up. The lack of noise in the E350 is as remarkable as the BMW’s.
I'm curious why they did make the Gran Coupe the most aggressive looking. It's the only one of the 4 series that has the side vents as well. It's a beautiful car.
Damn, that front plate + the grill is a tough pill to swallow. I'm certain that the aftermarket will come up with tow hook location front plate mounting solutions, but cripes, that OEM placement on the new grill looks like Bugs Bunny went to the budget orthodontist.
Can't believe you forgot the back seat trunk passthrough, which is rare in a convertible where the structural support beams would normally go.
I'm in the Atlanta, GA market which is "car crazy" central. Every time I see 'buckey the beaver' l laugh. BMW is such a fantastic car company. Why???????

I have a miata and a 328i. Thinking about selling both and getting the 4 series convertible.
Interior looks pretty good. Not over done and packed with gimmicks. Seriously, the hand gestures are the most ridiculous thing. I'm curious if everything is cheap, creaky plastic like it usually is in a BMW.
I'd like to see the Gran Coupe version, considering that was the best looking style of the old 4, and I really loved the practicality of the "hatch".
I guess none of it matters, since I will never buy another BMW until that grill dies lmao.

I actually like the soft top than the hard top. I still daily drive my 1988 325IC. The originalsoft top is still good all around. Good review!!!

The grille for some reason works better with the convertible to me. And i like the convertible styling over the hard top.
I would risk it and take off the front plate and. Replace it with a custom euro style plate with the same info or delete it and or just throw it on the dash.

Just got the 2023 m440i. The grill, which I hated at first, has grown on me and with the shadow trim it looks great. Got the San Remo green with cognac interior. Agree - needs ventilated seats. Nooo - Audi does not look better - this thing is beautiful. And I actually don’t like the new curved display, which is why I went with this before it changed. Thanks for the review!

Prefer the hard top convertable design much better, a cloth top adds another maintenance project and seasonal use only
Like most other people are saying, the front end of this car looks terrible and it hasn't grown on me at all. The rest of the styling is great, although I agree that the interior design looks a bit dull and sterile... Ultimately I hope BMW reacts quickly to all of the negative feedback from consumers because it's obvious that their little experiment tinkering with the front grilles has been a complete fail. Emergency-refresh-time.

I own the non convertible M440i I have to say it’s fun the drive and gotten nothing but complements. Then too I also have the green paint on it which sets off the car.

The grill is a non starter issue to me. It's OK/fine. The hardtop convertible was/is my preference over the soft topper. Just a bit more secure feeling to me. I'd take it if that was an option over the soft top design. Otherwise, make mine that green exterior color and brown/tan/coffee interior colors. Also, all wheel drive since it would be driven daily. Really, why even own it otherwise?
I honestly didn't think I would ever like the new grill style but somehow they are growing on me as well.
Another great review. Other than the hit-or-miss build quality over the long term, this car is way too expensive. No wonder most seem to lease instead of buy...
That’s exactly why you buy them when someone turns it in after a 3 year lease. Saves you about $30k

It just sucks that they didn't not offer this with a hard top option I don't feel safe driving a soft top convertible in the winter in Manhattan with hazardous falling ice

Sad to hear it's not good at cornering or playful. The interiors are just stunning in person. I'm also getting used to the grill and this car looks just makes the old generation look so dated now. It's nice in Dravit with a black grill. So expensive though! Strange that the 2023 doesn't have big screen digital dash like the 340i facelift - the screen looks very impressive in person. 20 mpg is supposed to be good?

Why is it so important for a car to look aggressive? The best seller of all time was the Beetle, the opposite of aggressive.
because that is what sells in 2021. A "beetle" today will not sell, it is that simple. Supply and demand - aggressive styling is in demand.

I drive the new 2022 840i convertible. I considered this m440. Would you recommend this m440 over my convertible?? Which has the bigger back seat?.
The 4 series has more rear seat space. The 8 series is for looks while the 4 series is practical and much cheaper for a similar driving experience. I'd 100% recommend the m440i over an 840i. 8 series really only worth if you get 8 series with a V8.
8 series doesn’t have that stupid grill, sooooo 840i all day. Just my opinion.

For those people who live in a state that requires a front plate I think the large grille would look a lot better if the plate was lowered to the very bottom of the front of the car. I think it looks terrible smack dab in the middle.

Man, I love the new grill! Bigger, bolder and distinctively BMW! I have a 1991 Jaguar Sovereign with a nice bold grill and block headlights. I love the look and it stands out from the newer versions. Nice review, but I'm a definite fan of this style. When I see it on the road, it is an eye catcher.
