*Arirang* is the most well-known Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. No one knows the exact meaning of Arirang but it embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill.
*Arirang Alone* is a modern adaptation of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite?
Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together.
The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.

The thing about this competition is not about giving you a song and the arrangement and everything. Every episode they have like a "theme" to call it something.
Sometimes they invite a Immortal Legend (a famous old singer) or sometimes they just give a theme, in this case was folk songs.
What I'm trying to say before I deviate. The song they sing, is chosen by the singer based on the theme or the guest (so if it's a guest, they have to pick that singer's songs, if it's a theme, they choose about the theme, from any artist. and if there's no theme nor guest, they can sing whatever they want. PERIOD, and sometimes even arranged by the singer himself (like in this case, or every So Hyang's cases where she arranges every song she sings on this show).
Before I leave I'd like to recommend other artists singing in this competition which are Amaaaaazingly GOOOD!! Jeez, I wish I could sing like them... pfff. anyway
1. Son Seungyeon (Super rookie of 2014 = a super rookie is someone who can sing very very well, or has very good stage presence beside singing, and gets invited to the show with the other more famous singers, to prove themselves in some way) Songs from her: Amazing vocals "Wonderer", "I am wind", "Lost Love" and "sleepless rainy night" (in this one she sings with her mom, whom is a singer aswell). And amazing stage performance: "Mapo Station" and "I can't find your nithingale". A-Mazing

3. MAMAMOO (Super rookie 2015)(At this tage of life is a must!) Fantastic girl group, amazing performances, etc etc...) "Wonderful confession", "Delilah", "BackWoods", "Fly into the night sky", etc... And this are her originarls "Hip", "Destiny", "Decalcomanié" etc etc.
4. Ailee. "I will always Love you" is a MUST!. A MUST! PERIOD.
And then you should check the "fantastiqué" show idea stolen by the amazing producers of USA: The Masked Singer. Again, so hyang's performances, Son seung yeon's, park kiyoung's, etc etc etc...
Fantastic duo (here they invite random people who can actually sing, and they get the chance to sing first in a descalification round in front of the famous IDOL and then the winner gets a chance to sing with the IDOL himself in front of the public. Yaaaas
P.S. You should definetly check So hyang's performances: "Dream" (Own song), "I have nothing" cover of the original, and "Everyone on immortal songs".

So hyang one of my favorite female vocalists. Her performance of “ everyone” is beyond amazing. Hope you react to that. But I have a request that you react to her closest and best friend, “Park Ki Young”, I like Park Ki Young because they have about the same vocal range but Park Ki Young is a tad more versatile and can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz flamenco, and classical ( opera). They are both about the same age ( early 40s but look amazing for their age!) and the closest and best of friends. When saying the full name, Korean's say the Surname first, so it's Kim So Hyang. :)
I love watching vocal coaches do an analysis on So Hyang because everyone spots and comments on something different. It's even better when you guys add in reaction with the analysis.
Arirang Alone is a very old folk song about the history of Korea. It opens in peace then moves onto the dark notes and ups and downs of war and conflict and ends with a longing for unity between the North and the South. It's considered to be the unofficial national anthem. I believe Arirang is often thought to be a mythical mountain but it is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning.
This contest, Immortal Songs is for professional singers. Each one is a guest who has been invited onto the show and they are given the theme, in this case it was Korean Traditional Folk Song and they do what they want with it, reinterpreting and rearranging it. It then goes to audience vote each round. Because So Hyang went first she won her round but she didn't win overall (although she deserved to) because it's very hard to keep your place for however many rounds this went for, 6-8. It was No.1 song on the Korean Melon Traditional Song Chart for over a year.
Arirang Alone was released in 1990. It's a contemporary folk song based on the original Arirang, which is the 600 year old folk song. The part where the audience sings along is the original Arirang lyric and melody.

Arirang is a folk song that its very special and meaningful for Korean’s. I believe It’s meaning is even more powerful for them as it was a song that gave them strength and unity after the war against Japan

,,I wasn't the type who liked high notes. Before heard her high note ... I've never felt such an intense 5 octaves from any singer except her. She has had one-point lessons from Seth Riggs a few times when she was younger. that may not be all that made her, but it certainly contributed to her progress. (It seems clear when I see that she emphasizes several times what's learned to vocalization from Seth Riggs)

One of the things about So Hyang is she’s a really revered vocalist in Korea, but doesn’t make appearances very often. She mostly sings for church things( as she mostly sings gospel) and some of her own concerts, but VERY rarely on television. When she does it’s mostly on this show which is a fantastic music show all about reinventing beloved songs. (Basically what if your favorite artists competed in a cover competition...of your favorite artist. Everyone can sing, and they get competitive trying to outdo each other but no one truly cares who wins because they all have their own careers already) She really only appears on this show, but still pretty rarely. Basically if she hears about an episode she wants to do, she’s welcome anytime.
What I’m saying is So Hyang does what she wants 😂! You’ll only see her perform because she really wants to do it. Don’t get me wrong she’s the tiniest, sweetest human! Just not really about all the fame or celebrity lifestyle
If I had her kind of voice I would also sing when I want and make my songs the best. She will never go out of season.

Also, I know you won't get many (any?) suggestions for her, but if you want to hear what traditional korean opera sounds like, you should absolutely check out song sohee. She actually has done her own cover of this song on the same show, but sung it completely in the traditional style. If you'd like a different song, I'd highly suggest haeundae elegy instead.
Traditional korean opera has a very unique technique, and I'd love to hear a vocal coach react to and analyze it, because I don't believe a single vocal coach has reacted to any of her stuff before.
Song sohee is EXTREMELY well respected, and is considered a living national treasure in Korea. It's a huge shame shes so unknown in the west. She deserves a larger audience and reacting to her would be an excellent way to give her more exposure.

Her name is pronounced So Young with a slight h at the beginning of Young. And, as others have said, Kim comes first, as the last name is first in Korean. Her musical assistants say she hits E7 in practise but never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Consider that! She is really something else and I don't think there is an equal to her in this world among female singers. By the way, she was 36 when she did this performance in 2014 but, if anything, has grown even more beautiful and talented in the last 6 years. Some women simply grow in beauty well into their 50s and I think So Hyang is going to be one of them. Finally, she is 43 in Korean culture because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born.
You should watch this same performance on Vimeo, as they have a snippet following her backstage after the performance. She collapses exhausted into a chair and sticks her tongue out--a very honest and humourous moment! Putting that much energy and emotion into a song must take almost everything out of you! I don't know if you are aware, but SoHyang had ovarian and uterine cancer when she was 21 and almost died. She didn't, she has devoted her life to Christ and does not sing for money or fame. She sings for the comfort of people!!!

A note on pronunciation of her name:
The a in so hyang is somewhere between the u sound in young and the a sound in father. Closer to the a in father, but it's not exactly either of them. It's somewhere in between because vowel qualities in different languages are not always able to be expressed as exact English sounds like everyone in the comments talking about how to pronounce her name seem to claim.

@@ramseyvoicestudio you know, thinking about it, I think it should be easier for singers. You guys already do vowel modification when singing. But yes, it is absolutely difficult for anyone to actively use vowel sounds or consonants not in their native language.

In Asia, the family name comes first. Her name is Kim So Hyang and not So Hyang Kim.

@@shaibrry Regardless of the way you do it in America or UK (I find it strange that you insist that family name is last name instead of surname), you do not call her Sohyang Kim in Asia. Her passport shows Kim So Hyang. That is her actual name. She is called So Hyang by family members and friends. Her stage name is the same except that is is spelt differently.

I would like to see you review and react to Song SoHee. The reason is that Song SoHee actually sings in traditional Korean style of singing which is quite different from Kim SoHyang who is influenced by Whitney, Mariah, Celine, and coached by Seth Riggs. Even the beginning of this song is not in the traditional Korean way of singing it. i would be very interested in seeing review and analysis of the traditional Korean method of singing called gugak by a Western vocal coach. The video I would like for you to review is Song SoHee singing Tearful Duman River.

Just wanna give a lil bit input to pronounce her name correctly. The "a" in "Hyang" should be pronounced like "a" in "car" or "bar", not like "a" in "cash" or "bat" :)
