Welcome to the world of Queen Sohyang. I am 58 years old, and I have not heard a better female vocalist... ever.
I can't think of any better than her, I can think of some though that I think are about on par :)
"Everyone." A must. A solid beginning into the So-Hyang journey.
"Everyone" was what I was coming to suggest as well. Not many songs have ever took me on a journey through emotions like that one does.

What I love about this performance and So Hyang is that all of Korea associates with this song ( it is considered an unofficial National Anthem) and even though it is related to and often sung with the sadness and emotional strife of seperated familes from the Korean War when So Hyang sings it you are aware of those emotions but also become filled with the Hope and Pride she adds to it .. It truly is a classic performance of storytelling and invocation sung by one of the worlds best vocalist ... As Michael Bolten said of her ... Virtuosity and Virtuoso ... As her fans say Angel on Earth ... As I say Divine.

Kim So-hyang (born April 5, 1978), credited as Sohyang (read: So-Young), is a South Korean Gospel singer.
She made debut in 1996 with the song "MR", which was released on Naver Music. Despite having a long career in South Korea, she was only able to make her international breakthrough in 2014, when she became the first Korean artist to sing the American national anthem at a NBA game. Sohyang also achieved fame when she sang with Michael Bolton & Kirk Franklin. Her has participated many times on television music competition programs Immortal Songs 2 and I Am a Singer, and the last King of Masked Singer (2017) winning twice on Immortal Songs 2 with songs "Lean on Me" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and recently in 2018 she singing 'You raise me up - IM2 2018)
Disney's making contract with her in movie Moana, Sohyang voiced the protagonist in the Korean-dubbed version, for the singing parts (How far I'll go).
So many producer and home production would be to making contract with her.
But, she said ' I want singing to healing people and dry the tears with my voice. Gift by God.
Sohyang's voice type is a Lyric Soprano, specifically a Full Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6, a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control. This skill has been very much well showcased all throughout her career.

The others are great too but perhaps dont have the instant WOW factor. Keep going, Asia is delivering a whole new world in vocal brilliance, where singers still sing real songs and we are not guided into a funnel of mainstream artists and musical styles... Awesome job, again...

I second doing Bridge Over Troubled Water. When I found So Hyang, it was this song on another reactor's channel, and proceeded to spend two hours binging reactions to it. My favorite of hers.

Sohyang is a vocal master. Her technique is simply out of this world and I’d argue she’s the world’s best vocalist right now. Many have already suggested it, but you should check out her rendition of “Everyone” as well as “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Awesome analysis Caleb. As you watch more of her performances , she usually does not just cover a song, but she usually rearranges it to greater tell the story she wants to convey. You Raise Me Up and. Lean on Me are prime examples. Keep up the good work .
Great reaction! What impresses me most about So Hyang in this performance is that she is not using in-ear monitors, have you noticed? She has total control over her voice. It is not that usual to see such great technique and expression combined... very emotional performance for a song which is so meaningful to Koreans. Thanks!

I have to say it really is fantastic to see a new reactor, who fully understands the business and the talent of singing, discovering all these world class singers who deserve to be famous. It is slmost a crime Dimash, So Hyang, Hua Chenyu, Morisette Amon, and others are not more known.

Welcome to the incomparable Sohyang Queen of vocal technique. I saw this notification and had to run and hear your reaction to this powerful singer. Your face alone told a thousand stories. She does a spectacular rendition of Whitney Houston’s I have Nothing, with a musicality and arrangement even Whitney couldn’t have been able to pull of. I love her “Everyone” and also You Raise Me Up. Once again welcome to Sohyang’s world where technique, perfect vocals and amazing artistry come hand in hand.
I would suggest Lean on me (immortal songs performance), Rise up and Mona Lisa king of masked singer which is a bit different then what she normally sings. She also does the arrangements with the team she has around her. So she is involved in those beautiful arrangements.

I've seen a lot of her performances and to my untrained ears she has never missed a note!!.. a couple of her songs are 6 or 7 minutes long.. and she just keeps on going and going without seeming to get tired!!!.. if you can, please watch her singing You Raise Me Up and Bridge Over Troubled Water.. absolutely stunning!!

You look a little stunned! Obviously you are familiar with the so called 'king' of Asia when it comes to vocals but I am glad to see that you have taken the first step towards aquainting yourself with,according to many people, his 'queen',the mesmerising So Hyang. You should aquaint yourself with her back story & this should help explain to you why she is not a global superstar. When I first came across her I couldn't understand how someone with such an incredible voice was not a household name all over the world,it never occured to me that someone so talented would choose NOT to seek fame & fortune. It just makes me love her even more. Now that you have stepped in to the world of So Hyang you have so many 'goosebump' inducing performances to look forward to, happy viewing/listening

Sohyang is a 41yo Korean CCM/Gospel singer and cancer survivor. She mainly signs for God and to comfort/console people, so she is not that well known outside S. Korea. Do more from her, you will find out that over the years she has given us some pretty spectacular performances. She and her family does the arrangements for the songs she covers, so your timely comment about vocal discernment and ability to fit vocals into the arrangement is well put. The main reason I do like this artist though, is that she is devastatingly sincere and genuine. She always gives 100%, she feels and breathes the lyrics of each song she covers and she does her outmost to deliver the story and emotion to the audience. She really is a masterful storyteller.
In this specific performance, she was rearranging/covering the folk song Arirang Alone (one version of the Arirang song, which is something like the unofficial anthem of both Koreas). The song is talking about the re-unification of the peninsula and the end of the decades old civil war. It is very difficult for non-Korean people like us to understand the power and emotions these lyrics convey to the Korean people (check out this if you want to know more : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural) ) but suffice to say, this performance was legendary.
And a suggestion (sorry for the looong post). Check out her live arrangement of the song "Lean on me" next. Artist like Dimash and Soyang are really something special and for me listening to them is aways a journey. I'm exited to see your reaction to Soyangs "everyone" for example. And like written in the comments there are a lot of other great artist like Tengri (very special and from Mongolia, "Heaven"), KZ Tandigan, or from the philippines Michael Pangilinan (Khel), Bugoy, Daryl Ong, Katrina Velarde, KZ Tandigan, and Morissette Amon. I have heard her name before but this is the first time I've heard her sing. She has a really good voice and great control. I actually liked it more as the song went on and heard the power in her voice and the notes she was hitting. Thanks for another nice reaction Caleb.

It really moved me to tears. "Arirang" is a folk song and is often considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea. "Arirang" itself doesn't really mean anything and there are tons of theories of the origin and meaning of the song. It is also estimated that the song is over 600 years old! Anyways, thank you so much for reacting to So Hyang! (Can you believe she's 41 years old?!). Another awesome reaction video! You are for sure one of the best on RUclips! Keep going! :)

YES!! My Queen!! I knew you would love her. Can't wait until you react to Everyone... you'll be even more speechless. And, like Dimash, there is a lot to respect and admire about her personally as well as professionally. Sohyang discovered she could sing as a teenager by singing along with Mariah Carey's Butterfly CD but started as singing in church. She states that "God makes her sing" as a way of providing comfort and solace to people. Though offered many lucrative contracts (including in America), she chose to turn her back on fame and fortune. Sohyang is credits God for surviving uterine cancer. Due to bouts of pneumonia after cancer treatments, she considered giving up performing. After prayerful consideration, she felt that God wanted her to continue on. Her performance of "You Raise Me Up" was done while recovering from one such bout. Looking forward to more!!

Thank you so much for this. Anyone who watches and listens to Sohyang will be completely blown away, but I love it when singers and/or vocal coaches react to her. People who know what they're talking about. They're always EVEN MORE blown away because they truly understand the techniques and those professional aspects of her singing. She's a beast; a true vocal and musical genius. She's been through a lot in her life and music became a way of coping with it. She feels it in her soul. It's natural, but she has also worked hard to know her voice and learn how to use it this way. She's truly one of a kind.

First of all thanks for your reaction.. love to hear from a musically knowledgeable person.. I wanted to mention that she is involved in all the arranging of these songs.. that is to me what sets her apart from 99% of singers in the genres she performs in. She is not just a singer, but a complete musician. Hr Technique, range and control by themselves are very impressive and world class, but her Ear is what impresses me the most. She has great musical taste. She also likes to use full orchestration whenever possible, another one of those things I love about her. I find it amusing that they compare her to American singers, who supposedly set the benchmark she is supposed aspire to achieve. I think they got it backwards... She is the Benchmark. And in my humble opinion, she is pretty much on her own. She has taken the time to perfect her craft, which is definitely noticeable in these live performances.. she is always dead on. A testament to her musicality and professionalism. a true artist, not just a singer. I hope you get to listen to some more of her covers, or should I say the rewrite of those covers, because they aren't even close to the original covers in most of the cases. She takes (Musically speaking) simple songs and turns them into musical pieces of art. Fantastic performer, world class!

Hi!! I usually never comment on YT videos but I'm a huge So Hyang fan and I'd love for you to see her other videos. A lot of people don't focus on her King of The Masked Singer videos because not a lot of them are on RUclips, but they're all on Vimeo! Even though they aren't her popular YT performances, the performances from King of The Masked Singer are absolutely divine and incredible. I'd super duper recommend listening to her sing "Breathe", "Hug Me", "Dear Love", and "Home"!!! Pretty please, they are so impressive! (I could even supply you with links if you needed!) Thank you for the reaction. I am curious about the reaction from a song writer for Sohyang's performance. While Sohyang's vocal gets attention it deserves, one of the wonderful joy listening to Sohyang is to appreciate her rearrangement of the original. Arirang Alone is a traditional folk song with relatively simple melody and Sohyang turned it into a epic drama that can raise your heartbeat and send your pulse racing. Pleasantly surprised to catch your comments on vocal techniques. Also like your remark that she uses her vocal tools for the interpretation of the song, not just to impress. Sohyang has many amazing stages that you will enjoy but I would suggest her 2018 masterpiece of a rearranged "You Raise Me Up" on the Immortal Song 2 show at ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html because of the changes she introduced to the song. Her performances in King of Masked Singer were some of her best. “Arirang Alone” was my favorite performance of hers till I heard “Home” and “Where are you”.
