I've watched a fair number of her performances now, and what has been one of my favorites parts is in this song at the end when she goes from the huge vocals, pause, into the most delicate vocals as if nothing had just happened. I don't know what about that grabs but it does. I can't say another performer do that with such....true ease. Great reaction!

Angel sohyang!!!
Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south.
Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 45 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 45! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷♂
Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches aplenty are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times.
I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖

Wow. Her voice! Thank you for introducing to her to me. I usually listen to male voices like Forestella and BTS (yes, diametrically different from each other). Not since Maria Calls' "Carmen" have I heard such a voice.

김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) is a South Korean singer who uses 소향 (Sohyang) as her stage name. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.
Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

SoHyang arranges ALL of her covers she sings. It’s all her. She is THE MASTER, and not just vocals only.
Most reactors do this one first. You got hit like it was the first time watching her. She is that good. On my humble opinion, she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Nobody comes close to SoHyang. And the last part of her name is pronounced like that “a” is a U. Like SoHyung. That is how she says her own name.
Terrific reaction once again. Your connection to her performances really resonate with me. I hope you can go on another journey for her performance of "Everyone". It's a masterpiece and such a powerful performance. Sohyang has said it's the most difficult performance of her life and she's never performed the song again to this day. I must remind folks here to stop recommending "여러분 (Everyone)" as the next performance to review. It's like getting a person who tried jalapeño peppers to go for Carolina Reapers as the next level up. That's just bonkers.
Of course, we can put AMR progressively through several cycles of extremes to fracture and then shatter his mind. But he has to review these performances on successive days. He's currently waiting an average of 35 days instead.

Btw, the original Arirang Alone is not a traditional folk song even though used the theme of the traditional folk song Arirang. The song came out in 1990, but the singer sang in 60s or 70s fashion and feels like an old song, but not even a traditional folk song way. SoHyang on the other hand weaved the original 3 verses song into 2 with the original meaning and used both traditional and modern instruments and amazingly managed to express the totally different North and South Korea with the violins and broght the dissonant chaos into unison expressing the unification of Korea. She also managed to put the most well known original Arirang in the middle of the song where people sang along with SoHyang which is not in the original Arirang Alone and managed to put Korean traditional rhythm in the song. Btw, Song SoHee also sang this song in traditional way.

Arirang can be interpreted in many ways, but in this song, i think it means a big hardship that koreans have faced historically. On the lyrics, mt. Baekdo is the highest mountain in the north korea and mt. Hanlla is the highest mountain in the south korea. So “from mt. Beakdo to mt. Halla” means the both sides of korea. The whole song means, even though koreans will face many troubles until the unification, they should go on. the Koreans is the only one who has a division country. So you guys can’t empathize easily with the feeling that the song has.
If you know the historical things, you can understand this song better.

The voice of an angel, for sure! But the heart of a saint as well! In my opinion, the reason Sohyang evokes such strong feelings in the listener is that she's coming from a place of humility and honesty. When she sings, "Our hearts will be one", she BELIEVES it, and you believe HER! She connects with the listener in a profoundly truthful and impactful way! This is something no amount of technical skill can accomplish by itself!

To give this song some context, this song was sung by prisoners of war during the war with Japan who were being lead over Arirang hill to be massacred. and during the Korean civil war. It was to encourage everyones heart.

This song and Bridge Over troubled waters are my2 favorite songs of hers (but I haven’t heard any that I didn’t love).
So Hyang is friends with another Korean singer that I love named Park Ki Young.
My favorite songs by her are Nella Fantasia which has an opera vibe and is so beautiful I tear up every time I listen to it. Yeonan Pier has a jazz vibe.
Do yourself a favor and react to her Korean performance of “Fate”. One of the most unbelievable vocal last few minutes of a song I’ve ever heard vocally.
One of my favourite parts of this performance is when the older Korean man (wearing the hat) is nodding and smiling. She is doing justice to a beautiful song that belongs to the painful history of Korea. Dokdo is a small island of rocks the Japanese say is Japanese, despite it belonging to Korea on all Japanese maps before the 1900s occupation. korea is still trying to get it acknowledged as korean land. so the lyrics "Dokdo, did you hang in there okay last night?" is even more poignant.
