The music of Suzanne Vega depicts the power strugfges of relatonships. She has such a cold eye. Her storys reflect a socity that has put conflicts on every issue . The social world turning from a kind romance to the madness of war .and alienation. I find them sad and to often a true reflection of the war torn nation.
Having heard some of her songs years ago, it is only recently I have spent time listening to her lyrics and trying to understand them and to be honest she is an incredible writer/story teller in her songs as well as having a lovely voice and somewhat intriguing looks that are almost as mystical as her songs
My God!!! I cant believe! I was a child when they released this song! And this version is incredibly beautiful! Susan, a beautiful and talented! Thanks for posting it!!!
Because this recording lacks the 80s production cliches you hear in the final version, it actually sounds fresh and ahead of its time, almost like it belongs in the 90s! It was hard for a major label artist at that time to rise above being Juno-ed or DXed.
Great One! Both versions are simple strong, studio arrangement version makes wider atmosphere and this demo feels as a sketch of the painting. Wall painting. Simple Beautiful!
I remember the 1985 version. Then it was rereleased a year later once she had released Left of Centre (Pretty in Pink)in 1986. Excellent musicianship. I love watching her documentaries. Eloquent, informative, honest and very articulate. She really is special. Understated, elegant and knows restraint. Class.
A reference to "Sag mir wo die Blumen sind" ... a song that makes you a greater human being. Merci, Danke, Dank je wel, Thanks, Suzanne, you open my eyes and mind! If you want something close in English, I caould think of Carl Sagan - Pale Blue Dot.
Even if I am in love with you All this to say, what's it to you? Observe the blood, the rose tattoo Of the fingerprints on me from you Other evidence has shown That you and I are still alone We skirt around the danger zone And don't talk about it later Marlene watches from the wall Her mocking smile says it all As she records the rise and fall Of every soldier passing But the only soldier now is me I'm fighting things I cannot see I think it's called my destiny That I am changing Marlene on the wall I walk to your house in the afternoon By the butcher's shop with the sawdust strewn "Don't give away the goods too soon" Is what she might have told me And I tried so hard to resist When you held me in your handsome fist And reminded me of the night we kissed And of why I should be leaving Marlene watched from the wall Her mocking smile says it all As she records the rise and fall Of every soldier passing But the only soldier now is me I'm fighting things I cannot see I think it's called my destiny That I am changing Marlene on the wall Marlene watched from the wall Her mocking smile says it all As she records the rise and fall Of every soldier passing But the only soldier now is me I'm fighting things I cannot see I think it's called my destiny That I am changing Marlene on the wall And even if I am in love with you All this to say, what's it to you? In case you don't know how to read, this is a DEMO, which means a lot of the production features one would (and in this case did) find in the commercial release are not present as the song (or at least the recording of it) is a work in progress. As for being "flat": if you're referring to pitch, her pitch actually is quite excellent in this recording, especially as a demo. If you're referring to expressiveness, it is a bit less emotional than in the final production, but it's a DEMO. Clearly not a musician, and your insipid armchair quarterback production commentary are not appreciated.
+Bt Wlmn Yes, it's a demo. And I said 'emotionally'. Can't you read? Sorry I didn't just gush over it. Go and put some more stains on the sheets little boy.
+Grortle Hrung Actually, considering the subject matter, I can understand the initial emotional detachment, & actually prefer it over the more conventional album version. So, a matter of opinion, no?
I love the music but hate Susan Wojcicki pausing my music playlist. If you hate that to then tell Susan Wojcicki to stop in comments, feedback and by boycotting RUclips Red.

Proof that a great song stands up without the need for studio quality production.
Two of my favorite artists together...Suzanne Vega and Marlene Dietrich.
this made me cry pretty hard.
here I am , 12 years later , crying at this song and your comment
My friend introduced me to her in the late 70s, music I am talking about. “ still a fan “.
Great One! Both versions are simple strong, studio arrangement version makes wider atmosphere and this demo feels as a sketch of the painting. Wall painting. Simple Beautiful!
i am a better person for knowing this song and keeping it close to me....all these years... thank you for posting....
I ♥ Suzanne Vega`s music
Thanks for posting this - so great to hear this version. Lovely picture of Suzanne Vega, too.
True goddess , love this version much much
Wow. Didn't know this existed. Amazing to hear in a more raw, less polished version than the final studio take.
I remember the 1985 version. Then it was rereleased a year later once she had released Left of Centre (Pretty in Pink)in 1986.
Excellent musicianship.
I love watching her documentaries. Eloquent, informative, honest and very articulate. She really is special.

Class.
Thank you for sharing this excellent version
Loved the album version ...but this is even better!
+Jeffrey KRUPA Totally agree God bless friend X
Ethereal, reflective quality to these 1984 demos, luv it! many thanks :)
Thank you very much for sharing , never found it before :D
The studio release was great, but this without the big production is incredible. The slightly more restrained guitar solo works so much better too.
She was so far ahead of alot of groups around this time....great song:)
thank you very much
Thanks for this 💕
SO much better than the studio version.
i love her 4 ever thank u for the song Suzanne
Thank you very much!
She is a poet too.

Magnifique !
wonderful. better than the studio version
Jon Lenin Why do you feel it's better than the studio version?
SoulStylistJukeBox It's more heartfelt. I enjoyed more the strumming breaks at 0:47. Time and breath stops with the guitar... It's majestic
Nice one, never heard this before. Cheers dude...
Ecellent and so real. 👍🤏
Wow 💥💥💥💥

***** ME TOO KIDDO LIKE THE GROWTH

I have so much pain I came here
Even if I am in love with you
All this to say, what's it to you?
Observe the blood, the rose tattoo
Of the fingerprints on me from you
Other evidence has shown
That you and I are still alone
We skirt around the danger zone
And don't talk about it later
Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing
But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing
Marlene on the wall
I walk to your house in the afternoon
By the butcher's shop with the sawdust strewn
"Don't give away the goods too soon"
Is what she might have told me
And I tried so hard to resist
When you held me in your handsome fist
And reminded me of the night we kissed
And of why I should be leaving
Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing
But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing
Marlene on the wall
Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing
But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing

When you held me in your handsome fist
And reminded me of the night we kissed
And of why I should be leaving
Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every man who's been here
But the only one here now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing
Changing, changing, changing, changing
Marlene watched from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing
But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
That I am changing
Marlene on the wall

I think it needs the percussion in the final version. It adds that sense of drama. Just my opinion :)
no one asked your opinion, moron
+Bt Wlmn So what is this page for? Peoples opinions I think. Do try and comprehend, and stop being such a girl.
WOW, Where did these versions come? They are wonderful, hope SV can release them :)
Fine!
Nice
Eri molto carina nel 1984 complimenti
This sounds like Ani DiFranco. I find it hard to believe that isn't her.
uh huh yep.....wicked

Big bass in it. Fretless bass? The singing sounds a bit flat to me. Emotionally, not musically. Thanks for putting it up, dude.
