Thank you so much for posting this. "Cracking" is the first Suzanne Vega song I ever heard and this version is every bit as lovely. I'm listening at 2 a.m., the rest of the family is asleep, and I feel like I just found buried treasure.
The sheer captivating and raw beauty of Suzanne was always something that stood out for me. Especially during the 80's where New Wave dominated, she was a breath of fresh air. Pure and with that soothing voice, she totally captivated me. She was like a contemporary bard or minstrel, with beautiful poetry guided by beautifully executed acoustic guitar was just mind blowing for me. And she didn't seem to be afraid to take the occassional detour in the type of music she made. All in al,l one of my all time favorite performers. I had the pleasure to see her live once and it was a thing to never forget.
I love a lot of New Wave, but know what you mean. She has said her approach was to not just do trad folk, but use fresh and contemporary elements with it. She makes it all look so natural and easy.
OMG I saw her tonight. I love being brought back to this record. Cracking is my favorite song of hers but it's definitely hard to choose just one. She's so consistent. Such a great show tonight. I really miss hearing these songs. LOVE Suzanne Vega!
Yeah I feel and hear that too. She has mentioned Lou Reed being an inspiration for this song and her songwriting and that makes sense as him and Laurie Anderson were partners.
Thank you for your music, Suzanne. You helped define many sensibilities for our generation of creative, uncompromising followers of bliss. My whole family has and continues to love your music. So glad you stayed true to yourself, free spirit! I love your new album!
This song is so AWESOME!!! I have a bootleg vinyl album with this on it. Such a good album, shame that it's a bootleg and the rest of planet can't get hold of it.
When she was Interviewed in England (1987) she explained that the song was about suffering from mental health issues & depression, I find it obvious regarding the incoherency of the lyrics and the sharp clarity of detail to insignificant mundane environments.
miss this song a lot, like the rapping part of song especially. This song reminds me when I used to live in Manhattan, used to walk down the street in a cold winter morning, and I could feel the precious golden morning sun beaming down my face...
i love this song. i first heard it at a local record shop when the album came out and the simplicity of the music and the crystal clear yet dreamy production was instantly transporting; and the lyrics and title seemed to match the sound of the music perfectly. very interesting to hear this demo so many years on. it's a good version. they got the album version right though imo. the drums are unnecessary and their omission allowed them to really polish and bring out the acoustic guitars. a seminal opening track to a pretty timeless album.
@Robert27962 I think you're right (to some degree). I've followed British singer Sam Brown for some 25 years now, and all people know of her is "Stop!" If they knew what they've been missing.
Could i maybe have a download link to these demos pretty please? I'm a massive fan of hers and would love to have this. (check out the live videos I recorded at one of her gigs last year if you feel like it)
Why is it so much easier, why does one's eye, tend to follow that of an image off to the left hand where it espy, but focus on the center, not follow it on out, and to the right it be turned? A Republican could tell you of that there is some doubt.
This isn't as good as it gets. This is as good as it CAN get. Perfect.

The delivery still reminds me of Laurie Anderson. That first album is still the one I love the most.

whenever i write songs, if i need a different vibe then all i have to play is Vega or Mitchell. they give me a dreamers vibe..
This woman has her fingers on the human pulse.
Totally agree.
miss this song a lot, like the rapping part of song especially.

i don't know why but i could image the scene with her voice.
i love it.
This song has a ridiculous amount of hits. I know so many people this album affected.
too good. just too superb for words.
I'm very curious about the lives of those 11 people who gave a thumbs down .... they must so very sad.
Let's assume they completely deaf and forgive them.
Max Headrom that is kinda weird when you think about it...
I assume you thumbs down this one too and claim that's because of Max, he's guilty, let's punish him!
