I first saw this music video, and heard this song, for the first time, at nine years old in an early evening in August of 1987 on either MTV or VH1 (cannot remember which one) when I was punished to my room for the rest of the night. I was disrespectful to my dad when he said no after I asked if a neighborhood friend could eat over. After dinner I had to spend the rest of the night in my room until bedtime. It being summer, there was still a couple hours of daylight left and it killed me not going back outside. It was a beautiful summer day. So I put my TV on (I was never told I couldn't watch TV) and turned to one of those music video stations. This video came on and I was mesmerized. I had never heard this song on the radio, ever. Not even since. OR seen the music video ever again until about 2012 or 2013 when I found it on RUclips. If it wasn't for being punished to my room that night in 1987, I would have never known about this song even still. Haha.... It's a funny memory now and I have to laugh every time I watch this video or listen to this song. As a nine year old who was feeling sorry for himself at the time, this video and song comforted me. Such an appropriate name for the song as well since I had to spend the rest of that evening in solitude. Haha... I'm always amused by this memory now. Great song and video. I always enjoy putting this on.
Solitude stands by the window She turns her head as I walk in the room I can see by her eyes she's been waiting Standing in the slant of the late afternoon And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame Solitude stands in the doorway And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time we've met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight" And she says "I've come to lighten this dark heart" And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say "I've never thought of finding you here" I turn to the crowd as they're watching They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm I wanted to be in there among them I see how their eyes are gathered into one And then she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight" And she says"l've come to lighten this dark heart" And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear And I say "I've never thought of finding you here" Solitude stands in the doorway And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette By her long cool stare and her silence I suddenly remember each time we've met And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame
Very cool song. I remember the song Luka from years ago. I was watching a British crime drama and a character was named Luka. I Googled on Suzanne Vega and this song and have been listening to her songs for two hours. Wow how did i miss her? Enjoying now though. This was my favorite album when I was in high school, and it's still wild to me that a song like this could have been a hit in any era. Suzanne didn't chase any trends, her music was defiantly personal and wasn't produced within an inch of its life to try and fit in with waht was getting played on the radio. And yet "Luka" and "Solitude Standing" resonated with a wide audience because the stories Suzanne told were so relatable, because there was so much compassion and humanity in her songs. I don't believe nostalgia is a good thing but I can't help but admit I miss that time, when she and like-minded artists like Kate Bush and Jane Siberry were accomplishing so much (and, for a time, successors like Tori Amos and Toni Childs). Apart from the occasional one-off success like Phoebe Bridgers, I don't know if that would be possible now.
OMG this song... The mystery in her husky delivery plus the danger in the ominous rhythms grabbed my attention the first time I heard it decades ago. The tumbling notes of the keyboard expressed the anxious thrill I felt listening to something so foreboding.

I made a mistake of giving up on SV. I think it was when "Nine Objects of Desire," came out in 1996. For me it just wasn't the SV that I loved so much. However, after hearing "Songs in Red and Grey," for the first time today Jan 2020, it has made me fall deeply back in love, unconditionally with her again. Feeling alone and lonely
But a nice tune to listen❤
Solitude stands by the window
She turns her head as I walk in the room
I can see by her eyes she's been waiting
Standing in the slant of the late afternoon
And she turns to me with her hand extended
Her palm is split with a flower with a flame
Solitude stands in the doorway
And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette
By her long cool stare and her silence
I suddenly remember each time we've met
And she turns to me with her hand extended
Her palm is split with a flower with a flame
And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight"
And she says "I've come to lighten this dark heart"
And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear
And I say "I've never thought of finding you here"
I turn to the crowd as they're watching
They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm
I wanted to be in there among them
I see how their eyes are gathered into one
And then she turns to me with her hand extended
Her palm is split with a flower with a flame
And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight"
And she says"l've come to lighten this dark heart"
And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear
And I say "I've never thought of finding you here"
Solitude stands in the doorway
And I'm struck once again by her black silhouette
By her long cool stare and her silence
I suddenly remember each time we've met
And she turns to me with her hand extended
Her palm is split with a flower with a flame
Solitude standing is me in my home office.

Beautiful song, the vocals have a medieval element! I love her voice!
+Clara Ponty-Legendre You're right. I hadn't noticed it.
Suzanne is a very special and talented artist i just love her style of music
I can listen this song endlessly .It flows like a river .So simply and magical and music video too.
Extraordinary song about feeling in a Strange happy/sad mood. The music and songwriting are phenomenal here.
It's like you are singing into my ear. Unforgettable nuance. Brilliant song. Thank you, Suzanne.
How peaceful song it is!!😍😍
One of the few albums that I need to listen to from beginning to end. A masterpiece.
Some of the best and most memorable music of the early nineties.
It came out in 1987
Two weeks don’t go by that I don’t listen to this song. It’s an absolutely perfect song in every way. A masterpiece!
Absolutely!
I love her voice! And this song is so haunting and memorable.
I love the way the band is mouthing the words along!!! One of my favorites by her!
So, so sorry SV for underestimating your talent and how spiritually powerful your music still is today, Keep up the good work, and may you live forever! Love you always Xx
"Songs in Red and Grey" was pretty great.
