Thank you for this. Just tried pressing for the first time. Messed up some dollar books. Think my press was too tight. Going to try again, was very cool and fun to try out.
It happens. :-) You can do trial and error on a few more books but you can also use the backing board technique that I show in the video. Depending upon the press you may be able to feel resistance if the press is too tight when you're locking it down.
All of your videos are so helpful and insightful. I learned so much about pressing a comic in less than 30 minutes. Almost feel like an expert..lol. You are a very smart businessman my friend. Binging all of your videos 🙌🏼
Excellent tip on stacking the backing boards to gauge thickness of a square bound book! Thats something I would not have thought of, and another reason I enjoy watching your channel and taking advantage of your knowledge! Thank you Regie!
You are very welcome bro. The process is basically the same regardless of the book however you need to make a few adjustments depending upon where the staple is located on the book and/or if it is a square bound that has glue. You may need to turn down the temp to avoid melting the glue. You may also need to put the backing board or Teflon sheets in a different spot to prevent the feet of the staple from popping through the cover.
This is good stuff! I’ve been thinking about pressing some of my comics! I practically have a large, new heat press machine that’s been chilling in my garage for years. I’ll be sure to check out your other videos on the subject to get more insights! 👍🏾😁

Thanks for these informative videos. I've recently gotten back into comics after a 20 yr break and tripped into this CGC rabbit hole. Time to warm up that press.
Lol. Welcome back to the hobby Lee. Hopefully you can check out the three part series on pressing. I also have a solid series on how to submit books to CGC. If you have issues finding the books please drop me a line. 👊🏾👊🏾
Great follow up to the pressing videos Regie. I like learning the different techniques people have for pressing. I just got a press a couple of weeks ago and have been having good success with pressing a handful of books so far. Still learning tho. Thanks for the awesome information. Keep it coming brother! 👊
You are very welcome brother. I’m happy to help the community. I don’t have all the answers but I can put a few things out there for people to consider. Good luck!
You can do it for sure but you need to adjust for those variables. The goal of my process is to make the outcome predictable so that you can get consistent results. Good luck.
CGC charges $8.00 a book and a minimum of 15 books have to be pressed per order. That comes out to be $120 per press. If you buy your own press ( On average $150- $200) your pay for the personal press with the money you save after around 30 pressed books ( which would cost you $240 from CGC). P.S I'm dying for that cleaning video!
Great video! That stacked backing board technique is smart! On the subject of distilled or plain water - I imagine maybe if you had particularly hard water (like where I live) you'd probably want to go for distilled to be safe.
Thanks for watching and commenting Troy. I’m glad that I was able to share some additional things I had learned from other subscribers as well as clarify a few things. 👊🏾
It depends upon the press, the books your pressing, the number of backing boards, the number of teflon sheets, etc. Try using the backing board technique that I referenced in the video. It may help you adjust the "gap" of the press.
Good idea to go with distilled water - there are plenty of minerals and chemicals in city water - sure the total might be 100-500 parts per million, but they're there and now they may be in your book. Try evaporating a cup of tap water and the remaining dust and crystals are those impurities. I used to run a company's wastewater treatment system.
I have a tip I have never seen anyone mention before. "WARNING" I have only done this approximately on 500 ish comics now with AMAZING results. STRICTLY with comics that need front and back presses only, I'll use a spray bottle with distilled water. Now im sure your saying WHAT? YES, while the book is sitting in the press all setup and ready to go, right before I put the Teflon sheet on the cover or back Ill lightly MIST the book. Once the top or bottom is damp place the TEFLON on top and close your press. I use a timer of 10 minutes and that makes sure the comic is DRY. Now I only do this on books with heavy warping or creases. This SKIPS the water bath idea and greatly reduces the time needed for the book sit in moisture. Practice on a few 50 cent books and watch the magic happen. I did and now I greatly increase the speed in which I can get it pressed. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
Great information. As mentioned before though, pressing is not for me, I'll continue getting cgc to do mine 🙄 Thanks for sharing what you have learned 👍
Great Video 👌 I started to press comics a few weeks ago and your part 1-3 of pressing comics was a good guide how to start and what is needed. Now I was struggling with some problems (like the imprint of texture of the teflon sheet) and this Video will hopefully help me to get rid of all of my problems with pressing 😅 Thank you and greetings from Germany
You are very welcome. The Teflon sheets can be tricky but once you get them dialed in by using the correct side and the proper amount of pressure, you’ll be good.
We have some pretty hard water where I live, so I wonder if using distilled water would be more advantageous for me versus somewhere that has better water. But then again, maybe all the minerals would stay at the bottom rather than getting into the book. Who knows?
How do you set up the moisture bath exactly? I see that the plastic grating piece would go into some water but then do the comics go onto just a backing board on top of that?
@@RegieCollects Somehow I had missed that when I watched it (I'm old, these things happen). Thanks for the response and the great info in your videos! I'm going to attempt to press some comics in my collection so your videos have been a big help

about distilled water, it comes from vapor, same vapor that s made in the chamber, so i think is no meaning to use distilled water for the umidity chamber
The SRP paper from Uline is ridiculously expensive. It’s $118 shipped! Not sure why I was hearing $85 shipped. Man idk if I can pull the trigger on that...
My wife was not not happy that I ordered from Uline. She feels that they are super expensive. I just checked and my price was $87 shipped. Your price might be different because your shipping destination is different. You may want to shop around or stick with the teflon sheets from Amazon. Hope this helps.
Regie Simmons IFBB Pro haha thanks man! Yeah I’m in Florida and they are charging like $25 shipping I’m not sure why when they are in Georgia lol. But yeah I think I’m going to try Teflon mixed with white copy paper like ETA nick does. Btw just ordered yesterday the same press you have. Can’t wait to get started!
Hi Regie thanks for all your pressing tips, after a month of testing & practice I seem to have the knack now! Quick question- how often do you change the distilled water in your moisture bath? 👍
Glad things are working out for you. I don’t have a rhythm for replacing the water. I’m not pressing on an ongoing basis so I pour the water out when not in use or when the levels get low because I am pressing lots of books.
Thank you so much for these tips they are very much appreciated, If I may give one type of feedback. If cleaning should be done before pressing, I think to talk about cleaning before talking about pressing would've been great (cart before the horse kinda thing). I understand you said you are testing a few things but your grades are coming back very good so your cleaning must be good ;)..... For myself right now I'd love to start pressing but since I know nothing about cleaning this info is a little premature? Again hope this isn't taken to be rude, because I am very very grateful for this info ;).
Jason, I totally agree. I blame your fellow subscribers. :-) The issue was that I mentioned pressing in a live stream and had a room full of people asking about pressing books. I did the pressing series to address the immediate demand of the subscriber base. With that said, the vast majority of new books do not need to be cleaned. The technique showed in the 3-part series of wiping the books down with a cloth is more than enough for modern books that need a quick press. I appreciate your comment and I hope that this context helps why the cart was before the horse. :-)
@@RegieCollects totally understandable :).... Haha my subs are all from my student film I did years ago. Think the video is around 8million views or something.
Just wondering I am new to this and found your videos very informative. Have you ever tried pressing comics that have a thicker card stock cover, or a foil cover like venom lethal protector 1 or embossed covers like fantastic 4 #371 and what were your results like if have? Thanks
No, because not all of those books can be pressed. Heavy cardstock and foil covers are not as pliable as paper so pressing will potentially not work. I have pressed some of those square bound Walking Dead books from image and the only thing that happened was that I melted the glue that bound the book. LOL With that said, give a try yourself and see what results you get. Consider dropping the temp if you are pressing something that has a glued spine. :-)
Thanks Regie. Would you press a comic that has been signed? I have a few comics signed back in the day at the San Diego Comic-con (1984 or 1985). New Teen Titans #1 with George Perez and Marv Wolfman and a couple Secret Wars signed by him Shooter. So 80's Comics with ballpoint pen signatures, y'know, old-school-style :) I haven't pulled them out in a while and they might be on the covers or inside on the splash page or combo. How might that make a difference in deciding? On this subject, have you ever had a non-authenticated signature graded by any service? I know CBCS now authenticates non-verified signatures. Your thoughts, please? Thanks in advance!
I just watched "Comic Pressing Explained | Spotting Pressable Candidates with CGC Comics" and my question about pressing signed books was answered. Thanks!
Lol. You are definitely on a binge watch. In many ways the videos/content builds upon itself telling more and more of the story as you go. A signature on the splash page won’t be a big deal for CGC versus a signature on the cover. The cover would trigger a green label versus blue (splash page signature). And, yes the label impacts value. There is a video on the channel that looks at green vs blue label values. I have never used CBCS for signature verification but that might be a better route than green CGC labels. I think CBCS charades $25 for the first sig and $15 per addition on the same book. Hope this helps.
Hi Regie. I used room temp distilled water but I did not get any condensation in my humidity chamber. Does this mean my chamber did not get humid enough? It seems like everyone else gets condensation even with room temp water.
Room temperature means different things for everyone because houses are at different temperatures. You also have To account for the size of the bath. Those are two major unknowns that I can’t address. The real question is are you getting good results with the bath and press. If so, I would not worry about condensation. If not, you may need to tweak things (e.g,, water temperature, bath size, bath duration).
The distilled vs. Tap... it REALLY depends on if you have hard water... it could hurt comics im sure of that much. However if you already use a filter and everything like that for your water, you should be fine.. SIDE NOTE! IF YOU HAVE HARD WATER! (you will know) don't chance it with buying a filter... just use distilled water.. not worth the of the hard water breaking through your filter and ruining your comics!
I stumbled upon your channel yesterday for the first time. Great series for pressing comics. Just a suggestion for you about not wearing gloves, you are working with heating and reheating Teflon sheets. Be careful inhaling the particles and transferring particles to family or pets especially if they are pregnant or nursing. Be safe my friend. I added your channel to my subscriptions.
I’m not sure if I missed it but I’m curious what psi you set the press at. I’m trying to not over press if I can help it. If you could give a good estimate that would be great.
My press manual and doesn’t have a PSI gauge. You can always underpress a book and correct it but if you over press you can’t come back from that. To that end, err on the side of underpressing. You may also want to check out the other 4 parts of this pressing series.
Regie Collects OK great. Good tip not to over press. I’ve been trying to eyeball what it seems to be around. Maybe 10-15lbs. I’m practicing and experimenting some now with my own methods. I’ll make sure to keep that in mind.
Welcome to the channel. It would be pretty impossible for me to tell you if it’s worth it for you to by a press. Only you can answer that question by evaluating how much you are spending to have books pressed now versus the cost of buying a press combined with the time commitment. Hopefully you had a chance to watch the 4 part pressing series where I show you all of the supplies as well as the process that I use to press. This will give you a solid foundation. Also, here is a blog post where I outline the supplies as well as provide links to buy them: regiecollects.com/f/starter-kit-for-comic-pressing
Hello Regie. I've watched your pressing videos a few times. In the process of ordering my own press. I have a question about pressing. Can you safely press comics with signatures?
Thanks for checking out the video. I’ve spoken to the head grader at CGC about this an he tells me that signed comics can be pressed. In my head I don’t see a problem with pressing books that have been signed with Sharpie or pen. I would potentially place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper behind the cover to be on the safe side.
Ok cool you are supporting Distilled water and YES!!! Why run the risk.. I can show first hand some books I ruined 1.5 yrs ago from using bottled water lol
Oh snap. That’s good to know. You are the first person that has said that they have evidence of damage. Again, why risk it??? Thanks for watching and commenting bud. If possible, I welcome details on the damage that you’ve seen.
Watching the Video Regie.. Change the SRP (parchment paper) EVERY TIME bro.. Their is dirt build up on the first press, then Flaring (Warped is what you are calling it) on 2nd and 3rd.. SRP/Parchment SHOULD BE CHANGED EVERY TIME BROTHER.. LOL I do not like Teflon due to the chance of creating a mean ass Canvas's issue on wrap or inside book. If you go back to my first messages, I said that you will feel uncomfortable with SRP or more comfortable with Teflon.. Im just saying that why take a chance of putting a book into your cook and finding out that particular book is more sensitive than others then it catching a mean canvassing on the wrap and/or inside book.. Then you ended up having to trouble shoot or ruining the book/\.. Why take that chance? Also, DO NOT USE BOTTLED WATER (SPRING WATER) or Tap water only use DISTILLED Water.. I cannot stress this enough.. Distilled water is $0.95 for 1 gallon at your super market.. Also their is a sliding scale for the DIY humidity Chamber.. I.e 1 cup of distilled water is a 12 - 24 hours (depending on your climate and the room where comics are) 10 cubes of distilled water 1-2 hours etcetcetc.. It is all feel.. Thats why I say take a filler book from Square Bound Book, Stan Lee Tribute modern age marvel books, Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, Copper Age, Multiple different modern age cheap books and practice practice practice.. That way you get a feel for your humidity bath, your cook (press degrees and timing) etc..
Work supplies me with distilled, so I can cream off plenty... ☺, but is there, in England 🏴, any silicone parchment paper to avoid as I see unwaxed mentioned so I presume that there is some that isn't suited for pressing... I am a virgin to this and getting everything together before I start practicing with my shiny heat press....
Hey Regie !!! some good points, also now we know what Happen to Your Hair - (Dryer). Ha! Also I always wash my hands before I handle my Comics, (Old or New).
Ugh me too! I still buy a 100 pack of medium/Large (better if a bit snug for fitting and feeling) to have in case.. Some books, especially golden age and alot of brand new modern age age are so sensitive to oils and dirt that are in your skin/pours/Under finger nails..

Does CgC press comics before they grade them? Also would you recommend another pressing company?
If you select pressing, yes they will press it. No, I don’t have recommendations for third party pressing.
Hi Regie. I used room temp distilled water but I did not get any condensation in my humidity chamber. Does this mean my chamber did not get humid enough? It seems like everyone else gets condensation even with room temp water.
Room temperature means different things for everyone because houses are at different temperatures. You also have
To account for the size of the bath. Those are two major unknowns that I can’t address.
The real question is are you getting good results with the bath and press. If so, I would not worry about condensation. If not, you may need to tweak things (e.g,, water temperature, bath size, bath duration).
@@RegieCollects Thanks Regie.
Regie, do you use moisture for modern comics too?
Yes
@@RegieCollects Thanks!
Welcome to the channel and thanks for the tips.
Hey=, new to your channel, i wanted to ask you if its worth it for me to buy a pressing machine, if so which model would you recommend ?
Thanks for the response. I have a few that i want to send off to have graded and wanted to press first.
Where are you sending them? I’m asking because CGC will give those books a green label versus a yellow.
@@RegieCollects i probably won't send them to cgc. A couple have certs, but most will need authentication.
Got it. Good stuff brother.
Can you recommend a good press?

I wash my hands as well then I lay my book on a microfiber cloth.
I ll send you the pics in a bit
The most common damage from using Tap water, Filtered water and even Spring water is possible Tide lines..
Yo can I just send my books to you? Haahaha jk man, ty for provided more information!
Please do. Send me all the high end silver age books. 🤣😂
Thanks.
Thanks for keeping it fun bro. 😂😜 You’re awesome.
You do not have to wear gloves, just make sure your finger nails are clean and wash your hands every 20 -30 minutes.. Nice
I hate gloves!! 😂🤪
Ugh me too! I still buy a 100 pack of medium/Large (better if a bit snug for fitting and feeling) to have in case.. Some books, especially golden age and alot of brand new modern age age are so sensitive to oils and dirt that are in your skin/pours/Under finger nails..
I hear you brother. You have to do whatcha gotta do.
don't be lazy, show the process
Lazy? There is an entire three part series that precedes this Q&A in which I show all of the items used and the entire process of pressing books. I also have an entire series on cleaning books.
