CYCLING KNEE PAIN & HOW TO FIX IT!

- I've been having some knee pain - more of a niggle - fo the past four week for so, and so went to visit Phil Burt to see what the issue was.
It's a dull achey kind feeling at the front left part of my right knee but it did ease up when cycling.
I had just changed cycling shoes and I had set the cleats up so thought it could be that. I also thought my hamstrings might be a little tight. But Phil Burt to the rescue!
Here's his RUclips channel if you want to learn more from him:

I'm not rubbing you cause I love you:no context Phil 😂
U always think out ur vlog for the benefit of ur viewers.
Even if it has nothing to do with this video, I finally have to say it right now! You are somewhat too beautifull! Sometimes I catch myself not listening anymore, just looking at you. So please, don´t be so cute in your Videos! I am missing all of the vital Information.
Hopefully you´re knee recovers soon! I had knee problems years ago ( from skiing) and started to eat "gelatine hydrolysate" which definitely helped me over the long term ( which may not in your case but it won´t cause damage either). Great vids and go on pedeling soon!
You have no idea how much I appreciate this video.
Try this experiment. Try doing a squat off the bike in two different ways, one with you feet planted flat on the floor and then do one whilst balanced on the balls of your feet. You will notice pressure through your knees when pushing on the balls of your feet. Clipped on shoes force you to push on the balls all the time. Try getting some flat pedals like the catalyst ones from pedalling innovations paired with some good flat soled shoes which will allow you to push with a mid foot position. This will keep your heel supported and pushing with the whole sole of your foot, that will strengthen your knees plus transfer much of the load to your hips. Good luck.
I know this is from 5 years ago but wow thank you. I was having terrible knee pain on my patella, got a very expensive bike fit to try to fix it, and was still having issues. I read your comment yesterday and biked today focusing on pushing through the pedal stroke with a flatter foot, essentially pushing through my midfoot, not through my toes with a pointed foot. I biked 50 miles with 4700 ft of elevation gain. NO pain. It was incredible. Thank you for explaining this. Seriously changed how I bike.
You are a warrior so will overcome every obstacle. By the way I’ve up my riding to 35 miles per day last week, hope to continue. You are a queen.
Repetitive stress/overuse injuries, good times. ;) I have a laundry list of them. Wear them like a badge of honour. That said a good physio is worth their weight in gold.
Have the same thing Katie. Took me ages to figure that it wasn't my knees but IT bands. Good physios def help :-) Thanks for sharing!
The knee issue would have been there a lot longer than four weeks its just shown itself now as the knee area has said ''I have had enough'' Poor stretching, and general off the bike training will have a part but, shoes and bike fit will be the main cause. People think I have had a bike fit and I am done but, its a constant issue that needs revisiting regularly. Fitness or loss of it can change how you are on the bike so, a fit for me, needs addressing at least once per year and depending on how much your riding and, how hard the rides are more.If there is nothing actually medically wrong with your knees then its the bike and what your not doing off it.
Hort wood iss eww Uber fin ides
Had the same sort of issue with my knee, I now foam roll my ITBs every day for a min or so and no issues now. The pain of rolling stops eventually as well.
Oh no Katie! I thought this knee thing was only a runners problem?
I think it came from running originally - first had it when I was training for a marathon. WAHHHH!
@@KatieKookaburra oh my! maybe i should tell people to stop trying to run marathons? ;-)
Why did I move out of Manchester without seeing this guy! Only 11,000miles away....worth the trip?
I know it sounds crazy but try cutting out potatoes and tomatoes for a few days and see if that helps. I know it sucks being hclf but it’s helped me. I still try to be 80-10-10 and potatoes are my fave.
Thanks for such an information,I just had knee pain today...very helpful to me 🙏🙏🙏
You know it's batsh1t when they start taking you up like a mummy
Really interesting video, fascinating to learn how our body is affected by small changes.
On another note, is that a new bike in the background? Do share.... you know I love new bikes :-)
Great video as always Katie. Love my roller. Is that a CAAD12 disc in the background?
The seat position on the bike behind you seems too nose down.
I only have knee pain while cycling . I feel like I should just stop cycling :(
Don’t stop get a bike fit get a foam roller get a physio but don’t stop it’s just so good for you
He gave your knee a face. Hope it's all smiles. I have battled a quadricep? tendon issue (lifing injury) for almost a year now which cycling has mediated. Perhaps there is more treatment I need to look into?
He sure did haha, it looked gross eh?! Hmmm I have no idea about that - have you got a physio you can go and see, specifically a cycling knowledgable one?
Peak air over own down
Rin pH voodoo pH spells
I was going to type "wow, nice set of pins you got there"......but, I realised that might be considered immature and totally missing the point of the video. On the plus side, this knee ache could be your body's way of telling you to buy a new Cervelo S5.....hint hint.
Make sure you take some gaffa tape on your next ride then 😀
Been thru the same. Cleats are crucial. From experience, esp. on new shoes, better to have them a bit further back than forward.
And I always thought further forward was better... live and learn eh? :)
Thanks Katie, this is exactly what happened to me after buying winter boots. I've spent a fortune on physio and no one has mentioned ITB.
Give that beast a roll - it's done wonders for me!!! Phil is so good at identifying the issue - proper good physio.
It looked a very painful experience. However, great video content with technical advice.
It's strange that it hurts at the time but then alleviates the other pain.
So glad he's give u help knees r so important for power output 👍🏅 thank you for a great vlog again Katie
Thanks Darrell, glad you found it useful!
Great video mate.
Hi Katie, looks like your right foot is pointing outward a little while you were walking. Mine does that too and my knee tracks inward I don’t get much pain but it’s not right. Think I need to see some one too
Yeah I think it does that... odd foot twins! :)
I think that may have been because Katie was walking clockwise around an object. If she were going the other way, probably the left foot would point left.
I've got exactly the same thing let almost straight but the right slightly outward different sensation when unclipping
Yeah. the odd visit to a physio looks like a good idea. Good vid.
Cheers Alex :)
Great timing with this video and recommendation for Phil, I've just this week started getting knee pain!
Does it sound like the same pain I had? Defo invest in a foam roller!!
Felt like centeral front/inner knee. I'm fairly new to cycling and I think I've overloaded the knees by grinding up hills, low cadence high power recently. I'm sat with my roller now. Owch
Hi Katie, who is Phil and where does he work from ?
He was the physio for Team Sky and British Cycling. He’s based in Manchester.
Is he happy to see people?
Do you have a number or contact?
