I didnt listen to the knee on Jan 19th. Couldn't walk the next day and then no running for four months. Now in taper week for Hever half ironman and watching this with an ice pack on the knee 8 months later. In middle age these things take forever to get better. Wish I listened to the body more! See you all in the start line on Sunday...bad knee and all🤪

Im a big believer in rest days and going super light or even changing the running schedule to suit how the body feels. did two long runs for my level 32k and 19k 3 days apart. then 2 days later did a super light training session and bare foot core and grass work/lateral training drills. This is an example of letting ur body recover and feeling that u arent 100% just yet, before diving into another long or even short sharp sessions

Make sure if you have tightness in calves quite regularly with pain + loss of power. Look at compartment syndrome. Doctor tried telling me i had shin splints, turns out it was ECS a form of compartment syndrome.
Issue is if you run through it will get tighter and tighter to the point you struggle to walk fast.

I think the biggest thing is to treat "new pain" with move caution. I have had spleen flareups for 4 years now and its a very intense sharp pain but I know how to manage it. a couple years ago though I got a mild pain but it was in a place that I hadnt had pain before, went to the hospital and I had appendicitis.

I've read about Rest-Ice-Compress-Elevate being replaced by Elevate-Compress-Move in modern physio (many sources by now), but if that's just 2 schools of thought, who is to say for sure who is on the best track. Maybe just something to look into.

AdvEx Heather actually mentions this(not the acronym) but when referring to an ankle injury she says to keep moving and apply heat if it’s minor and to ice and stop if it’s major. Good info to post either way.

  • @IronWill

I believe I have fat pad impingement in my knee, and have had this for nearly 1.5 years now. It started as pain when I bent my knee past 90 degrees, though has moved around a bit over the last year and a half, with different actions triggering it. At the moment, it triggers when I do hip bridges, and if bending it past 90 degrees and turning it outwards slightly... Not much I can do about it either, apart form giving up running for a few years (which I'm not going to do) :/ In the last year and a half I have managed to do a couple of smaller triathlons, a full and half Ironman, a marathon, and several half marathons (so it's not limiting my training or events)!

Running is bad for you, it is really good fun but it is definitely bad for you. I know this from 50 miles every week when I was a teenager and bad knees since.
Learning about rest and recovery, how to properly structure your training schedule and cross training to replace some of your running when needed.
Don't think that more miles is better, it's not. Quality training session, over quantity of training will make you faster and give you less bad knees.
But remember running is bad for you.
