  • @Joe_Parmesan
    @Joe_Parmesan 5 месяцев назад +4

    To add some context for Washington in 2016 and 2017: During the 2016 summer, Mahinmi was over 30 years old and injured at the time, and aside from the previous season with Indiana, he spent most of his career as a backup C (solid player though, who played for the 2010-11 Mavs). Washington signed him to become their backup C, but in doing so, they paid him more than their own starter, Marcin Gortat. Over $30M was going to the C position, as they house 3 guys over 30 - Jason Smith (about 31 at the time) was signed shortly after Mahinmi.
    Following the 2016-17 season, Washington got into a bidding war with Brooklyn for Otto Porter. In that bidding war, Washington threw down a max contract offer for Porter, causing Brooklyn to walk away. With that signing, Porter became the highest paid player on the team, making about $24-27M/yr - more than Wall and Beal (at the time). Keep in mind, that during that 2016-17, Washington traded a 1st round pick (which became Jarrett Allen - a young, defensive-minded C that Washington so badly needed) to get Bojan Bogdanovic for about 6 months, while Kelly Oubre (a recent 1st round pick) waited in the wings - both guys played the same position as Porter.
    John Wall also signed his supermax extension during that 2017 summer, but the extension did not kick in for another 2 seasons, leaving Otto Porter was the highest paid player on the team during that time. The extension was a risk that sadly did not pay off, but the contracts that the front office already gave out severely limited the moves Washington could make to improve the roster. It was especially true for the contracts given to Mahinmi and Porter, because they were not desirable at their price points.

  • @yeahaight3495
    @yeahaight3495 5 месяцев назад +38

    There are errors in the section about John Wall.
    13:35 “…he was developing into a good passer, as well.”
    Wall was regarded as one of the league’s premier passers from the moment he was drafted. He had just finished his third consecutive season averaging 10+ assists by the time that you judge he was “developing into a good passer.”
    14:10 “… plenty of people were concerned about [$170 million] going to a player who was… not quite a top tier guard yet…”
    You said it yourself… Wall had just made third team All-NBA. In a league with Westbrook (Prime Thunder), Curry (Prime), Isaiah Thomas (Prime Celtics), CP3 (Clippers), Kyrie (Cavs), Damian Lillard, Mike Conley, Jeff Teague, Jrue Holiday, Kyle Lowry, and more! And, I believe the All-NBA teams were split into “Guards, Forwards, and Centers,” so he was also competing with shooting guards… too many of which to name.
    I don’t recall any hesitation or backlash about paying Wall that money. The Wizards would have been insane to let him walk.

    • @andrem.thomas332

      People love to bash Wall for some reason. John Wall got more blocks than any PG in NBA history.

    • @Joe_Parmesan
      @Joe_Parmesan 5 месяцев назад +2

      Wall's numbers (excluding his efficiency) went up in the playoffs too! And, Washington couldn't win without him playing at an All Star/NBA level. Not once was he carried to any playoff wins on a mediocre/poor performance. Overall, Washington quickly became a below .500 team and has remained there ever since.
      In the video, he quickly mentioned Mahinmi's contract, but Otto Porter received a max deal, making him the highest paid player in Washington, 2 years before Wall's supermax extension kicked in. In that time, Washington couldn't really do anything to make the team wholly better, because no other team in the league was interested in paying Otto Porter nearly $30M.

    Wasnt Bargnanis big contract to the knicks in the 2010s? That one always stuck out as being especially bad to me, even tho I thought he was a good player at the time

    Didnt Josh smith aka j-smooth lose all of his money and is playing for ice cube's BIG3 basketbal (which is awesome by the way) fornlike $50,000 a summer....imagine going from 50 million a year to 50,000....

    These are not disasters. 😂 If you are watching NBA in 2015-2016, you should know that cap space sky rocketed AND there were no notable stars in free agency. Teams had 2 options - pay players, or pay fines for not spending their cap space. Almost all of these players are traded away after 1-2 years for cap space.
    It was a business strategy.

    i know im gunna get hate for this but kobe's contract was also one of the worst. i love 24 he's my favorite player and i guess you could argue that him being the icon he is still provided some utility to the team. but when that deal was announced i was so deflated. i knew right away the lakers were done for. honestly one of the most boneheaded things that both LA and kobe himself ever did
