Oh 100% they did. Miggy’s one of my favorite players of all-time. Such a class act. I’m judging this one off the fact that because they paid him so much, it really limited their ability to build a competitive team since the extension kicked in
He definitely had a hall of fame career and everyone knew there would be a drop off, but I don’t think anyone expected the drop off to be as sudden and drastic as it was. He went from legend to barely above average overnight. No one could sustain the numbers he put up during his big run, no one expected that but holy shyt no one expected him to drop as much as he did. Tigers couldn’t let him go though cuz of what he did for us though. I’m just glad it’s over.
By the end of the deal, it 100% could be the worst one of all-time if he continues his antics. I put it as number 5 for now because I also wouldn’t be shocked if he puts up an all-star season or two in the remaining three years of the contract because the talent is still there
The major contributor to Davis' decline was MLB choosing to ban Adderall and not grant an exemption, despite him taking prescribed Adderall for years at that point. He switched to another drug, but any doctor will tell you that people won't necessarily react the same to different medications (I have a coworker with ulcer problems who has no issues with a name brand medication, but has awful digestive issues if he takes the generic). Honestly I don't think he would have kept up his level of production regardless, but it was certainly a major factor.
What an awesome fact, thank you so much for sharing. So sad seeing how his career just fell apart. He’s such a good dude and does a lot for great causes
Adderall was already banned -- Davis just had an exemption in previous years. It later came out he didn't apply for one in 2014. Maybe he thought he didn't need it anymore. It's never been explained why he didn't apply for one. The next year the league gave him an exemption for Vyvanse. So only he knows what was going on, really.
I kept waiting for Ryan Howard's 5/$125m extension. That was Chris Davis before Chris Davis: a car boot on the Phillies for a total of-4.8 WAR. Not that he needs to be shamed...that image of him lying on the ground as their season ended is still haunting.
Patrick Corbin deserves a mention, he signed a 6 year $140 million deal in 2019. He delivered in that year and was dominant in the WS, but then was the worst pitcher in baseball the next 3 years. -1.2 bWAR in 2021 and -2.5 in 2022 (as a pitcher!!!), and for reasons I cannot possibly fathom nor comprehend he was awarded 1.8 bWAR in the covid season despite showing a 2-7 record 4.66 ERA 1.57 WHIP and .308 OBA in 11 starts. In 32 starts this past year (including Opening Day), he put up a whopping 0.4 bWAR.
Only reason I decided to leave Corbin off the list is because he helped the Nationals win a World Series. If you asked Nationals fans if they regret the contract, I think the majority would say no. Ultimate goal is to get that trophy, and Corbin was huge in that Astros series
Totally forgot about that Cano contract. At least he had a few productive seasons. Pujols had some really good years to start the contract so I decided to leave it off the list
The Mets having to defer Bobby Bonilla's $5 million dollar contract buyout into an annuity payment totaling over $20 million dollars 10 years after he retired will always be my number 1.
i feel so bad for strasburg. this contract being at the top of the list really just puts to show how great he was when he was healthy and how immensely sad it is that things had to end the way they ended. regardless, great video! your content is of incredible quality and it will soon show in the subscription numbers, just trust the process man!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Loved watching Strasburg growing up. Really sad to see injuries end his career like they did. Again, appreciate your comment so much
You feel bad? He got to play pro ball for a decade and walked away with like half a billion $ if you include his baseball related endorsements. How can you feel bad for that? He won a WS, WS MVP and lived his dream. He’s more than fine.
Rendon's contract has the potential to move up to number one when all is said and done. On a team where there should have been 3 superstars, there ended up being only 2 superstars and 1 massive albatross of a human being. To be fair though, the underlying drama behind all three of those bad Angels contracts (Hamilton, Rendon, and Pujols) clearly illustrates the executive dysfunction that plagues the current front office and will continue to do so until Arte either does some serious soul-searching or sells the team
Rendon is 100% the worst on the list. At least some of these other player posted amazing runs in their careers. What is the upside you’d expect from Rendon? 25-30 HR and 80-100 RBIs for 2 or 3 seasons at the most? Again, at least the other guys on the list proved they can have multiple elite seasons for extended stretches. This guy has one good year and very good postseason run, and now he’s worth one of the richest contracts in MLB history? Only in Anaheim. Sure, there’s always a chance he turns things around, but he’d have to finish out his contract with at least 3 straight seasons better than his best to even make it look like anything but a historic waste of money, time, and a roster spot.
As a Cubs fan I'm glad they got rid of their core. It was the right move even though it was sad to see Bryant, Baez, and Rizzo leave. Bryant did have a good 1st year with Colorado so a bounce back is possible. But Rizzo is the only one that's actually consistently been above average since leaving the Cubs.
The Strasburg situation could've been mitigated if the Nationals insured his contract. They would've been off the hook for more than $100 million if they got the insurance.
I can’t believe you have under 1k subs. Your definitely gonna blow up soon and I’ll be here to say I was there from the beginning. Much love from a rival Giants fan
I just cant say Miggy was a bad deal. Yea he was bad near the end but he brought so much to that franchise. Also wow the Angels need to DRASTICALLY readjust what metrics they use to decide to sign a FA or not.
It wouldnt have been so terrible if he had stayed healthy and didnt lose all his power. That and alex avila was always known to be made terrible contracts
Anyone else still shocked that teams still offer these long year deals and I can’t think of a single player to really live up to it? MLB owners and GM’s should do what the nba does and give out 4-5 year “super max” deal instead
I was literally just thinking that the other day. I think that would make more players change teams, and thus would make the offseasons more exciting for fans
Worst one I can think of is the Royals signing Mark Davis before the 1990 season. Coming off 3 great seasons in a row (and a Cy Young award as well) with the Padres and the last 2 as their closer, he took a nose dive straight into the tank. He had SEVEN saves with KC over 2 and a half years (6 of those in the first year of his contract) before being traded to Atlanta for Juan Berenguer. He hung around in the bigs a couple more years, and then was gone. If ever there was a guy who for all intents and purposes took the money and ran, it was Davis
The Tigers don't regret his contract. The amount of money they made and will make off his name paid for itself. Ohtani isn't the only one selling merchandise or opening relationships to foreign talent. Cabrera jerseys will be on sale for many, many years to come. And the fans do love him. For the amount I see why you placed him high on the list but the reality is that they don't regret keeping him around. Especially since the Tigers were uncompetitive through the extension. He put asses in seats when they were playing terrible baseball from 1 to 9.
Totally understand all that. I don't think they regret keeping him around, but probably regret the amount of money they gave him because it prevented them from going out and trying to acquire more talented players
As an Angels fan, the Hamilton signing never made sense to me as soon as it was announced I was annoyed. Like really you guys wanna take a risk with him!? Terrible signing and it's arte being arte trying to make a splash. As for the Rendon... my God that guy is such a clown having him on the team has just been bad and the money he's taking while being out is insane and frustrating for us fans. Arte started as a reasonable owner to then only just cause his own downfall and fans want him out. Him not trying to sign Ohtani was the last straw for a lot of fans, but me personally I'm glad Ohtani got out. The angels need new owners and need to rebuild, right now everything is a mess but we do have good young talent that needs support and hopefully we can have a healthy year without freak accidents happening
At the time, I actually didn’t mind the Hamilton signing. He was that good and seemingly was in his prime. The team had Jered Weaver and CJ Wilson in their primes so they didn’t need to add pitching either. Just unfortunate how it panned out but I can’t entirely blaming them for going for it
Good points! I also had high hopes when Moreno bought the club but it quickly disappeared. His signings seem knee jerk and spontaneous, not well thought out. He seems more like a fan with money. Now that Ohtani is gone, what do we have really to warrant buying a ticket? Trout is it, and they can just walk him now whenever. Seems like the rest of the team is all AAA players that will rotate in/out of the big club line-up, like last year. I honestly can't name a potential starting infield. Other than Fletcher I can't name a guy that belongs up here permanently
Padres could be on here again with Jake Cronenworth's contract. Extended him when they didn't have to. Such an awful organization, lol. Seidler deserved better.
It’s not a great contract, but I don’t think it’s that bad. Only seems so bad because they are clearly running low on money right now and could have used the money he’s making on a better player
In his first 5 years of the contract so far, Trout has posted 20.7 bWAR. The contract has been fine for now, considering one of the seasons was shortened by 100 games too
@BlakeRobins0n unfortunately since he signed the extension in 2019 he has played over 100 games twice and less than 90 games 2 times, yes im not including 2020 of course. He is great for baseball playing, I hope he plays 130-150 games per but he hasn't since 2019 and I don't see that anymore 😕
@@jorgevillagomez5908 Agreed that he'll never be what he once was, but I don't think he'll ever fall off into an abyss like some of the players on this list did. He'll always be somewhat productive at the minimum
If Ohtani has a league average ERA and averages over 100IP and hits like a top 10 DH, his contract would still be worth it. The only way it is an overpay is if he can't be a pitcher. Being a decent pitcher and hitter provides so much value. Just think how much a team would pay for an extra playoff roster spot.
It'll be worth it from the ad revenue, but not from on-field production. Since it's deferred money, let's devalue his annual salary to $60 million. That's the price of a great DH plus a pretty good starting pitcher, which you wouldn't be getting at 100 IP and league-average ERA.
He is also the perfect MLB ambassador, gentleman all the way. The Dodgers could use a guy like that, they seem to have cornered the market of ill spoken country bumpkins (Freeman, Betts, Kershaw). If the Dodgers were smart they would only allow Ohtani to be interviewed, keep those other guys far away from a microphone, including Roberts!
Yeah in hindsight I can’t blame the Nationals too much, but it definitely is the worst contract of all-time with how little they got from him since they won it all
Most Tiger fans adore Miggy. However his last 7 years totaled about 2 WAR, all for $240 million. His performance suddenly dropped off in his age 34 season and became a boat anchor for the team. He and his $30 million a year was a significant part of the reason the Tigers have had the most loses in MLB since 2015. People need to compare his last 7 years to another HOF great Al Kaline who was a plus contributor up until his final year. Miggy’s nickname should have been Coaster Cabrera.
It still stuns me how the Phillies ignored some of the best, most futureproof members of the 2008 core like Utley, Rollins, and Hamels so they could PREEMPTIVELY sign… Ryan Howard, who was ALREADY a slow lumbering first baseman. Howard will always be a beloved player in Philly, even in spite of his injury, but why we went for him leading to our-decade long postseason drought will always baffle me
Yeah that Howard deal did set the team back for sure. At least they still got some great seasons out of Utley, Rollins and Hamels before they were shipped away
Love how you showed Sale mowing down the Jays.. especially him k'ing Babe Schneider.. but you failed to show him DOMINATING Sale for a HR in his first ever at-bat :)
Haha not really. In my offseason predictions video a few weeks ago, I predicted Ohtani and Glasnow both to the Dodgers so I did that to see if anyone would notice
Instead of focusing on velocity, there should be a much stronger focus on improving pitchers mechanics. I can't tell you how many times I've read scouting reports on minor league pitchers that state that "he has a lot of effort in his delivery". Not everyone can throw a 100 mph fastball, and this focus on high spin rates will inevitably lead to more injuries .
Cabrera is one of the few MLB players that clearly didn't take any steroids which as a Tigers fan I respect it just difficult and as I'm so used to careers ending in 2 ways. They either stay juiced or will fall off mid 30's then finally cave to the sauce...then all the sudden they're winning CY Young's at 38/39 signing massive contracts at 40. Not sure how you can discuss how guys faded or didn't fade without discussing what's being taken in the locker room.
Great content man keep it up you definitely earned a sub here your channel just begun and I binged watched all your videos. Great entertainment I like what you doing. Wish you nothing but success. Also Jordan Zimmerman is definitely top 10 worse but you let me know why you didn’t add him here
Thank you so much for the kind words! The Zimmermann contract barely missed the list for me, and I definitely would have been fine putting it in the top 10 for sure
Chris Davis was only a productive hitter because he was allowed to use Adderall (a banned substance) because of a special dispensation... if Adderall was not a banned substance, you would have 20 guys hitting 50 HRs every year.
The reason I would say it's not Top 10 is because neither the Red Sox or Dodgers had Crawford for more than 4 seasons, so it's not like it hurt either team salary cap wise for too long
Ronaldo is more marketable then LeBron, Messi and Ohtani just cause he’s far more popular globally and embraces the celebrity life (whereas Ohtani and Messi are more quiet). this isn’t to judge how good each athlete is on the field since they’re all amazing
Pablo "Panda" Sandoval was just coming of a World Series MVP home run record, so, he looked like a winner. You never know when a guy's gonna lose his spark‽
Although Miggy was getting overpaid for his production, from 2016-2019, he was filling seats for the organization, so I don't think they lost out as much as other organizations on this list. Also, Javy Baez's contract with the tigers is much worse
He was a classic case of phoning it in, he wanted big money, but didn't want to play the games. So he just claimed injuries as an excuse for not playing. When he was in SF, he was never hurt for a day, but he was going to be a free agent after that season so he was "motivated" to play every game going into renegotiating his next contract. Once he got it from Colorado, he reverted to being the phone-it-in guy that he was, missing loads of games again.
Personally, extention type of deals like Miggy's, Votto's and Sale's more less paying for the past legacy and teams can live with that. Davis deal was bizzard as he was going down already yet Os still paid him... Strasburg deal is cost of doing business as he was WS MVP and timing favored him... real problem deals were, 200m plus contracts with the new teams like Cano, Fielder, Pujols and etc...
Barry Zito contract is borderline horrible, but he helped the Giants win a championship. Flags fly forever. Barry came through when it counted #RallyZito
Many big-name signings in all sports are often not the fault of the GM or analysts in the front office. They are the result of owners calling the GM and demanding that he sign, re-sign or trade for a certain player no matter what the price.
I think the ad revenue for signing Ohtani will balance things out, but if the Dodgers are struggling in the years from 2034-2043, imagine paying $68 million a year to a retired guy. It'll make the Bobby Bonilla contract seem like a deal.
Rusney Castillo's contract might be worse than Sandoval. The Red Sox gave six years and $73 million to a guy who had never played in a Major League game and ended up stashing him in Triple A for nearly the entire contract so it wouldn't go against the luxury tax. At least Sandoval played most of a season. Patrick Corbin's deal should also warrant a mention, as he seemingly stopped trying after getting a ring.
Only reason why I put Pablo's contract as worse than Castillo's is because Pablo produced negative bWAR during his contract. Corbin's contract was awful horrible, but he did help the Nationals win a World Series so I left it off the list because of that
That Strasburg contract will probably be the worst for a long time. Hard to imagine a player barely playing for 7 years but still owed that kind of money. Too bad, as it wasn't really through any fault of his own. His injuries just wouldn't let him play.
It would've been OK if they bothered to insure his contract. IMO, the only time you don't insure a contract is if the insurer refuses to cover it, and if that's the case, you should reconsider signing the guy altogether.
Sure he tried to sign big players, but he should have signed pitching. He has only given out 1 multi-year deal to a starting pitcher in the last 8 years, and it was to Tyler Anderson who sucks now
MLB granting Chris Davis a ritalin exemption, only to suddenly revoke it with no explanation is an enormous part of what tanked his career. Wayne Davis was just a journeyman barely making the teams in Texas he was on Ritalin and had an exemption, when is career started to blow up with the Orioles he still had his relent exemption, so it's not like the Ritalin was stimulating him in such a way as to help his gain as he struggled while on it as well. Suddenly being paid an enormous amount of money in a long-term contract is exemption for the medication he's been taking for years and years as revoked. I believe it was reported that he had been taking it for anxiety, and can you imagine the anxiety of trying to live up to that contract when the medication you used for years and years is now taken from you?
While it is hilarious to rag on the mets at every opportunity possible, Deferred payments are very common in pro sports and we just pick on the mets because they're the most inept franchise in the league
@legomystego815 my selections aren't about deferred payments...it is about production to dollars. Eg: the $ per fWAR on those contracts are awful. Mike spent the vast majority of his contract on the IL similar to Strasburg. My main point though is that the video creator doesn't have a very well researched list.
Miggy deal ain't bad, what was bad is no support. Brought in Fielder and traded him after 2 years, gave Jordan Zimmerman wayyy to much to come in. Poor GM moves make it look bad, but up until 2017, he was still great.
Sale was still good for 1.7 bwar in 2023 with that era. His Fip was solid and he pitched 100+ innings. He’s just been hurt. He’s still an above-average starter when he pitches. Sure combined with injuries it’s an overpay, but guys like Davis and hosmer have much worse contracts to me
I'd replace Bryant with Pujols on this list. He has a lot of time to salvage this contract, and you are contradicting your own criteria. If he performs but the team sucks it doesn't matter for the purposes of this list. What matters is his individual performance.
Bryant’s individual performance has been terrible so far and has been severely banged up in his two years in Colorado. Pujols had over 200 home runs and 800 RBI’s with the Angels
The current Rockies management is a carbon copy of the 2000-2010 Orioles. That's not a good thing. Randomly giving a couple people big money then putting zero pieces around them, not developing anyone on the farm...
ehhh kinda is "overpriced in a sense" but hey if hes a 30m dollar hitter and a 40m dollar pitcher then it must be good value? idk only time will tell if hes injured the whole time then it wasnt worth it but if he even stays healthy i see it being an okay contract by the end.
Even if he doesn’t pitch in a single game for the Dodgers, they’ll still make more money from him than they’ll end up paying him, just because of how much jerseys and tickets he’ll sell
Although Sale’s ERA looks horrible, he still has a low WHIP and crazy strikeout rate. To a full season, he’d be a solid pitcher. His main problem is just the fact he can’t stay healthy 🫤
I don’t even think the ERA was horrible, it just wasn’t great for the amount of money he has been making. The big reason for it being on my list was the fact that it prevented a Mookie extension
I don’t think Strasberg announced his retirement. Media outlets said he planned to announce it but it was never announced and the team denied that so I think he’s still active
Miggy,s contract, just like Albert Pujols massive deal we’re signed to pay for the front end of the deal. The tigers paid for the front few years of the deal while Detroit still had a small contention window. The backend meant nothing because they weren’t competing for anything. He was given that money as a thank you for making Detroit not a sufferingly garbage baseball team.
Kris Bryant’s contract also made no sense to me since they literally PAID the cardinals to take Nolan arenado the year before and then they sign a worse third baseman that they had to move to the outfield with the money they could’ve signed arenado with
Exactly. Rockies ownership and management has to be bottom 3 worst in the league. They have literally zero direction and aren't close to being a halfway decent team
The idea that they will make up their money on merchandise and ticket sales just doesn’t make sense to me. Dodger stadium is always sold out so it doesn’t change anything. And then merchandise is part of league revenue sharing. Teams don’t make money off of jersey sales. That’s why this contract is dumb.
While I agree Chris Bryant contracts looks bad , still has time to make it up. Honorable mentions to: Rusney Castillo, Carlos Perez, Darren Dreifort,Hideki Irabu,
For sure, I just don't think it's going to happen. Wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world though, considering his numbers will be slightly boosted by playing at Coors Field
Teams are too quick to sign 30+ year old players to lengthy multi year deals for huge sums of money. It may look good for a couple of seasons before age or injuries take their toll. Then you end up paying one of the highest salaries to a washed up 40 year old while there are guys being twice as productive at half the cost.
Based on Japan Daily Sports, a economist and economics professor named宮本勝浩(Katsuhiro Miyamoto) from Kansai University, calculated and estimated Ohtani would create an economy of 50 billions JPY(about 354 millions in USD) in 2024 if he continue to stay in Angels, 64.3 billions JPY(about 455 millions USD) in Ohtani goes with Dodgers. If this is true, Ohtani could easily make that 700 millions USD back for Dodgers in just 2 years. 2024 he's not going to pitch, so by 2025 if he can still pitch, he can probably create another wave of mania, meaning it might bring more money to Dodgers potentially, and if all the calculations were correct, Ohtani is simply just a good investment for Dodgers, not only the cash is cycled but the value of this team is also going to go up because they had this legendary player in their team history, fans will look up to this teams, players will want to play for it, just like how Ohtani wants to play for Dodgers. You should ask how much money Angels makes because of Ohtani in these 6 years, now he's 29, if he can still manage to pull it off another 6 years, he'll be 35, think how much he can make for Dodgers, the rest is just extra, and I believe it's easily over 1 billion USD in revenue, the entire Japan is crazy on him, include a good portion of Koreans and Taiwanese, then we also got the main purchase power in US fan base, I just can't imagine how one single guy can create a such hype and market, he's literally the chosen one in 100 years.
@@BlakeRobins0nhe got screwed because of the mlb’s change on adderall usage. He had a script for it, then mlb went zero tolerance for amphetamines (which included medically required adderall)
There is nothing more stupid financially than saying “let’s win now, right now, sign that guy to a decade long deal.” It’s stupid. Sure maybe give the guy a crazy high 2-3 year deal, but holy heck it’s these 7-10 year deals that cash strap teams.
Miggy C should be lower on that list. That contract should have just been considered as a courtesy to an almost definite hall of famer despite the fall off in numbers. Great list, though.

Javier Baez could qualifying for this list as well.
Definitely
As a Cubs fan I'm glad they got rid of their core. It was the right move even though it was sad to see Bryant, Baez, and Rizzo leave. Bryant did have a good 1st year with Colorado so a bounce back is possible. But Rizzo is the only one that's actually consistently been above average since leaving the Cubs.
The Strasburg situation could've been mitigated if the Nationals insured his contract. They would've been off the hook for more than $100 million if they got the insurance.
Surprised that Jacoby Ellsbury contract with the Yankees is not on this list
I left him off the list because he put up 10 bWAR in his first 4 years of the contract. No one on my list put up anywhere near that
I can’t believe you have under 1k subs. Your definitely gonna blow up soon and I’ll be here to say I was there from the beginning. Much love from a rival Giants fan
Best rivalry in baseball! Thank you so much for the kind message, means more than you can possibly imagine!
I just cant say Miggy was a bad deal. Yea he was bad near the end but he brought so much to that franchise. Also wow the Angels need to DRASTICALLY readjust what metrics they use to decide to sign a FA or not.
I wouldn’t say the entire deal as a whole was awful, but they really did overpay him and it costed them the ability to add some more talent
It wouldnt have been so terrible if he had stayed healthy and didnt lose all his power. That and alex avila was always known to be made terrible contracts
I was also expecting the Angels/Pujols signing in 2011 to be on this list too.
“Miggy Roids”
Ok then how is it one of the worst ever? Do better
That’s some awesome insight. Didn’t mention it because I wasn’t too familiar with Davis and the landscape of the league in the 90’s
It was shocking to hear that you only have 500 subscribers at the end. Keep up the good content, you deserve a lot more
Thank you so much for the kind words, means so much to me!
@@BlakeRobins0n no problem, you deserve it
The Tigers don't regret his contract.
@@BlakeRobins0n fully agree.
Great vid, helped me get through my slow day at work
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Pujols and Browning were players from my time. Flamed out with injuries right after the big contract.
Congrats on the continued growth of your channel! great vid!
Thank you so much for the nice words!
John Fisher owning the A’s
Padres could be on here again with Jake Cronenworth's contract. Extended him when they didn't have to. Such an awful organization, lol. Seidler deserved better.
It’s not a great contract, but I don’t think it’s that bad. Only seems so bad because they are clearly running low on money right now and could have used the money he’s making on a better player
And yet teams keep offering these ridiculous deals
Indeed! Betting millions on a players performance 7-10 years in the future is more insane than betting on a horse to win a race.
Trout was a great player but can't stay healthy either. That was a bad contract along with Pujols. Angels love giving out bad contracts 🤷♂️
Just subbed man - love your vids!
Thank you so much!
Just started watching your channel and.......holy cow how dont you have 50k subscribers??
Awesome vids
That Strasburg contract is insane.
Yeah in hindsight I can’t blame the Nationals too much, but it definitely is the worst contract of all-time with how little they got from him since they won it all
Any list like this without the Jacoby ellsbury Yankees contract is blasphemous
I thought about it for sure, but he did put up 9.9 bWAR during the span of the contract. Some of the players I listed in my list put up negative bWAR
@@BlakeRobins0n - you getting roasted bruh!!!🤣
Most Tiger fans adore Miggy. However his last 7 years totaled about 2 WAR, all for $240 million. His performance suddenly dropped off in his age 34 season and became a boat anchor for the team. He and his $30 million a year was a significant part of the reason the Tigers have had the most loses in MLB since 2015. People need to compare his last 7 years to another HOF great Al Kaline who was a plus contributor up until his final year. Miggy’s nickname should have been Coaster Cabrera.
Well said
boat anchor , my @$$... Miggy is the best player in franchise HISTORY- period. You don't know 💩
Andruw Jones contract with the Dodgers was pretty terrible too, maybe not length wise but in general a terrible deal.
Yeah that contract was horrible but wasn’t long enough, only 2 years
It still stuns me how the Phillies ignored some of the best, most futureproof members of the 2008 core like Utley, Rollins, and Hamels so they could PREEMPTIVELY sign… Ryan Howard, who was ALREADY a slow lumbering first baseman.
That was Paxton lol
Oh, good call.. my bad lol..
@@HP0134
No mention of Jacoby Ellsbury with the Yankees
He put up almost 10 bWAR in the first 4 years of the contract, while no one else on my list put up anything close to that
@@BlakeRobins0n - you must be too young and just don't know...
The Orioles contract with Albert Belle turned out to be a HUGE mistake.
Sure did...
Having the video start with Ohtani, and end with Glasnow, seems like a totally shot at the dodgers and their crazy spending this off-season.
Haha not really. In my offseason predictions video a few weeks ago, I predicted Ohtani and Glasnow both to the Dodgers so I did that to see if anyone would notice
😂
@@BlakeRobins0n butt hurt???
The Zimmermann contract barely missed the list for me, and I definitely would have been fine putting it in the top 10 for sure
cannot believe Pujols isn't on here. Angels should have 3 entries IMO
Pujols put up over 13.3 bWAR in the first 4 years of his deal. I think the contract was bad but not worth of making this list
That contract is bad because of how Pujols played in the back end of it. The beginning was fantastic
Chris Davis was only a productive hitter because he was allowed to use Adderall (a banned substance) because of a special dispensation... if Adderall was not a banned substance, you would have 20 guys hitting 50 HRs every year.
Carl Crawford with the Red Sox.
The reason I would say it's not Top 10 is because neither the Red Sox or Dodgers had Crawford for more than 4 seasons, so it's not like it hurt either team salary cap wise for too long
Strasburg's consistency was most impressive: he gave full non-value, at $30.625 million per start. That contract was the undisputed anti-GOAT.
Ronaldo is more marketable then LeBron, Messi and Ohtani just cause he’s far more popular globally and embraces the celebrity life (whereas Ohtani and Messi are more quiet). this isn’t to judge how good each athlete is on the field since they’re all amazing
Yeah probably. Not too into soccer and I live in California so I just used two superstars as an example
Bryant was so good to us Cubs fans but he was that injury prone for YEARS before free agency. He was constantly battling something.
He was often “playing through it” and he would go through periods where his power would disappear, and he’d hit nothing but singles.
He can still prove his contract and his main reason he's on here is I didn't like it
Personally, extention type of deals like Miggy's, Votto's and Sale's more less paying for the past legacy and teams can live with that. Davis deal was bizzard as he was going down already yet Os still paid him... Strasburg deal is cost of doing business as he was WS MVP and timing favored him... real problem deals were, 200m plus contracts with the new teams like Cano, Fielder, Pujols and etc...
For sure, I’m just pointing out how $248 million was still way too much money
Ellsbury has to be on the list for sure
total bust! wow!!!
Great video !
Thank you!
Jacoby Ellsbury to the Yankees 7 year 153 million.
glaring omission!!!
“And he punched him” hand wide open
Barry Zito contract is borderline horrible, but he helped the Giants win a championship. Flags fly forever. Barry came through when it counted #RallyZito
For sure, that's why I left him off this list
Wait till the Dodgers have to pay the backend of Ohtani's contract 😬
The $680 million they owe him from 2034-2043 does not count against the cap
@@BlakeRobins0n - Dodgers will make a billion $$$ broadcasting Dodger games in Japan! Dodgers have their own broadcast network.
Many big-name signings in all sports are often not the fault of the GM or analysts in the front office. They are the result of owners calling the GM and demanding that he sign, re-sign or trade for a certain player no matter what the price.
Oh for sure, I totally get that. Most of the times when owners try to step in and take charge, the moves tend to turn out poorly for the team
I think the ad revenue for signing Ohtani will balance things out, but if the Dodgers are struggling in the years from 2034-2043, imagine paying $68 million a year to a retired guy. It'll make the Bobby Bonilla contract seem like a deal.
They also have to pay Freeman and Betts at the same time. They have a win now pay later mindset they hope will work out with multiple championships.
Corbin's contract was awful horrible, but he did help the Nationals win a World Series so I left it off the list because of that
Where would u rank the yankees Ellsbury contract? 11th?
Probably right there, yeah. He was okay during the first four years of the deal so I decided to leave it off my top 10
@@BlakeRobins0n - you are getting ROASTED on the Ellsbury contract omission! 🤣
That Strasburg contract will probably be the worst for a long time. Hard to imagine a player barely playing for 7 years but still owed that kind of money. Too bad, as it wasn't really through any fault of his own. His injuries just wouldn't let him play.
Agreed all around
It would've been OK if they bothered to insure his contract. IMO, the only time you don't insure a contract is if the insurer refuses to cover it, and if that's the case, you should reconsider signing the guy altogether.
Kevin Brown's contract with the Dodgers should be on this list!!! 7 years for $105 mil! The very 1st $100+ mil contract in MLB!
Robinson Cano?
Poor angels... people give arte crap and he deserves much of it but he at least tried to sign big players. It just never worked out lol
Sure he tried to sign big players, but he should have signed pitching. He has only given out 1 multi-year deal to a starting pitcher in the last 8 years, and it was to Tyler Anderson who sucks now
now THIS IS the Angels' Worlds Series
Jacoby Ellsbury
Any list without Bobby Bonilla and Mike Hampton is an oversight.
Include Barry Zito on that list
Sure combined with injuries it’s an overpay, but guys like Davis and hosmer have much worse contracts to me
Talent wise, I agree the other contracts are worse. But when factoring in how they needed to trade Mookie as a result of it, I think it’s worse
Baseball executives are really ignorant sometimes.....
90% of the time .
ehhh kinda is "overpriced in a sense" but hey if hes a 30m dollar hitter and a 40m dollar pitcher then it must be good value? idk only time will tell if hes injured the whole time then it wasnt worth it but if he even stays healthy i see it being an okay contract by the end.
Even if he doesn’t pitch in a single game for the Dodgers, they’ll still make more money from him than they’ll end up paying him, just because of how much jerseys and tickets he’ll sell
Ohtani doesn’t even come close to touching Ronaldo in terms of marketability. Nor Mbappé.
No Chan-Ho Park???
Before I watch this - Mike Hampton will surely be on this list?
No doubt! Should've been on here for sure!!!
Replace miggy with Baez
I don’t think Strasberg announced his retirement. Media outlets said he planned to announce it but it was never announced and the team denied that so I think he’s still active
How is ellsbury not on this list
Put up 10 bWAR in the first 4 years of his contract. No player on this list put up anywhere near that amount
All baseball players are either paid way too much or way too little. There should be ways to adjust salary mid-contract.
Sure, but they literally only got 1 good year out of the 8 years of the extension. Angels got 4 good years out of the 10 year deal for Pujols
Baez contrect with detroit tigers should be on here. Miggy was wirrh all the money. That man was detroit.
Yeah it should have for sure, forgot about him
The idea that they will make up their money on merchandise and ticket sales just doesn’t make sense to me.
Dodger stadium is always sold out so it doesn’t change anything. And then merchandise is part of league revenue sharing. Teams don’t make money off of jersey sales. That’s why this contract is dumb.
Ticket prices are 4x more expensive than they were last season already
Stanton with the Yankees. Bumgarner with the D-Backs. Prince Fielder with the Rangers.
As a tigers fan we know we overpaid miggy, the contract has nothing to do with his future play if that’s not obvious
I'd have Pujols high on this list
What about Stanton? Unless I’m mistaken on my info he didn’t do so hit once he got that huge contract lol
I think the problem is there other teams will always outbid each other constantly because there’s no salary cap and year limit on contracts
sandoval hitting 3 homers against the tigers lives rent free in my head:(
If bonds was playing in his prime today I can't even imagine his contract
So I haven't seen the end of this video and I'm already calling that the worst of all time has to be Chris Davis
Pretty close! If it weren’t for Strasburg’s string of injuries, his is the worst
Well said. Angels clearly don't get the memo
Miggy C should be lower on that list. That contract should have just been considered as a courtesy to an almost definite hall of famer despite the fall off in numbers. Great list, though.
The contract was for sure I nice gesture towards him, but the money was WAY too much
