iversonloco Not true, I have a 95 740i with 298k miles. The turn signal would not cancel on left turn. Still felt like new when turning it on, but it would not cancel. Took the switch out and it was heavily worn, still felt solid but was worn and barely catching on the clock spring.
I believe it’s the best 7 series ever my father had the 728i and at the same time he had an E46 318i and also a clk 320 but i remember him saying the 7 series was so good he only sold it because of how much it drank. At the end he sold them all except the e46 and after 10 years of owning it a drink driver hit him. Was the end of that. Now I have an e46 318ci and I’ll never sell it. Best bmw ever I believe is the E46
I drive my 1998 740IL every day. 230,000 miles . I used to work on them for a living when they were brand new at the dealer. They looked awesome then and they still do today. Everywhere I go people talk about this car ….do you want to sell it ….I like your car….. a thumbs up at the gas station. There are some things created that will never happen again and this is one of them. All the stars were aligned.
I saw one for sales in the UK about 11 years ago, 750 V12 about 100k on the clock, it was owned by an old guy living in this massive stately mansion not far from me, 1 owner full BMW service history, completely speced out he only wanted £1250. its the only car i've ever regretted not buying, but I was working as a car salesmen living it home saving up to move out.
The "seat massager" was really for when you drive on long trips, it would change the pressure points on your legs etc so you don't get blood clots or driver fatigue. You can drive fo 10 hours and get out feeling pretty good.
Ask my father, he had a E32 750iL (predecessor) and we went all the way from Germany to Croatia for summer holidays in this car. We only ever stopped to take a piss.
@@LeBoomStudios I had a E38 740IL and I could drive for 17 hours just stopping for gas, food and to pee and I didn't feel all beat up when I got there. LOVED that car.
@Cuthbert Bracegirdle agree all these people lying I would take new one over this shit any day these people all liars they all say so beautiful but if they had money no one would buy this everyone would buy new one most these people just want to be cool and act like they are car geniuses that’s all it is they wanna be these car smart people
@@Evan-memo for all the money we enthusiasts put into such cars, we could buy newer ones easily. They just lack the charme and style of the older ones. I got a new 5 Series G30 530i and an e38 as a hobby. The e38 is more pleasant to drive.
Hell yeah! That was my first thought when I saw this review. James Bond drove it with his cell phone. I'll never forget how the BMW logo could pop up on the hood and had a cable cutter. That was the funniest feature of that car. Of course there happened to be a cable in that garage that just happened to be exactly at the right height for his hood ornament cable cutter.
I love James Bond movies. I always felt Pierce Brosnan was my favorite James Bond. I saw that movie in theaters at around age 12 and it was my favorite movie for about a year.
This video is one of the most viewed videos made by Doug. I'm glad that people still have a good taste in car design and in cars general. I believe that the E38 was one of the best if not the best model that BMW ever produced and I consider myself lucky to have a neighbor that owns one of them. I always find some time to stare at this beauty...
I was born in the same year as this car and I feel like when I finally get rid of my 2016 for this car I am really gonna have a connection to it. I just know it's gonna be great.
Those are not massaging seats, they are "active comfort seats," which are designed to make subtle movements to the seat bottom to reduce back fatigue on long trips.
Older cars are awesome. You just don't get the same feeling with new cars. There's something about an older, clean, well kept car that gives you this awesome feeling of enjoyment.
Dude i see you on every car related channel possible, you are like a legend to me and i find myself searching for your comments on any car related video!
The real problem is not that new cars have tech, the real problem is that 99% of the time they have shitty tech, lack of fluidity, insane input lag, frame drops, everything is slow af, just look at the new 7 series key, yeah it’s cool that it has a screen but what a shitty unresponsive low-resolution low refresh rate laggy screen. At these price-ranges they could have easily included high quality hardware but they didn’t. Also for new french cars for example who though it would be a good idea to control radio sound and climatisation through a laggy touchscreen ? Buttons are required for things that are THIS important, so that we can turn the volume down without crashing the car into a wall, so that we can control climatisation without hitting other cars etc.
My mom drove a 740iL like this one when I was a kid, and it was my favorite car my family ever owned. As a child, I could stick my legs straight out and not touch the back of the front seats. I felt like I was getting chauffeured and loved that car.
My dad also had a 1998 740IL when I was in elementary school. I wasn’t aware enough to know what it was, I just knew it was very nice. Felt like a tank. Will always remember those rear long pop out storage compartments. Everything that came after this was lower quality.
Oh, I cannot forget seeing E38 for the first time back in the 90s. There was a black one parked outside of a mall. Back then, just a BMW was very rare in my area. Seeing the 7 series in person was sensational. The front light tilted forward looked exotic, and the whole car looked sturdier and classier than any other car I had seen. Why can't BMW design like this anymore?
Back in 2000 when I was 10 I saw an E46 M3 and it was the best looking and sounding car I’ve ever seen making it my dream car. In 2015 I bought my dream car.
I had a 1991 535I, and that feeling of everything being solid is oh so true! If you own a BMW, you know the feeling. If you haven’t, go get one even if it’s an old one you won’t regret it,… Except maybe at the repair shop
No problem for me i work on my own older BMW's so that's out of the question. They do feel solid after 20 years. They don't feel lose or anything like the older American cars I've owned.
O3 Mercedes has a similar feel here. You pull the door handle and right from the get go it feels solid. Got into a 2016 navigator and I was like what's wrong with this car it's all plastic
Neil Krinitsky Yeah since owning two BMWs. A 1987 325 and a 1991 535. All of the American cars I’ve had since then feel like popcorn machines with wheels
@@dzenan.m I’m a detailer and for a car like this I would do it for free. The whole car community has the responsibility of keeping pieces of history and art like this in mint condition.
It was and it wasnt. :) The car in the film was a 740iL. BMW would not allow them to destroy 750's making the movies. They did replace the badge on the trunk, but thats it. They had 6-8 iirc. You can spot the trim in the car during interior shots. 750s are full leather - stitched door panels, dash, etc. 740's are vinyl/leather inserts for airbag area on doors, but otherwise vinyl. Either way, that movie is why I randomly bought my first E38 back in 2005.
@usa ha bro eventually, the amount will get there cause of constantly swaping engines and transmissions. With the prices u gave. U'll spend 80k in no time. Thats why its best to cut your losses n save for a new one
My dad bought one of these in 2004 and still has it today. Even though he's spent a small fortune on maintenence over the years, it's his pride and joy and he will never part with it. Such a beautiful beast of a car.
The seats were not meant to massage. They were for long trips and the lower seat would change the pressure points. That is why you hardly feel it. I was a technician for BMW when that car was around new. I would argue that the E39 is the perfect sedan, but I agree that this was the best 7 series ever built.
Greetings from South Africa. As a blind person I love the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series. My favourites are the 320i E30 (4 door),325i E30 (4 door), 320i E36 (4 door and vanos), 325i E36 (4 door and vanos), 320i E46 (4 door, 2.0l), 325i E46 (4 door), 325i E90, 520i E34, 525i E34, 520i E39, 525i E39 and the 740i E38.
Again, not like Doug could be bothered to research something so he could actually know what’s he's talking about in a supposedly educational review. Dough meet google, google, Doug.
I have to say, this example was low spec by comparison to my 2001 750iL in England. Mine had double glazed windows, refridgerator in the back, full seat and audio controls in the back arm rest, plus second phone in the rear arm rest, a powered self opening and closing boot (trunk) lid, blinds all round, lit mirrors in the back of the front head rests for rear passengers and....wait for it... a FAX MACHINE and fax point built into the back of one of the seats. "Fax me in the car" I used to tell people.... I miss that car....
Double glazed is very common in 7 series It is very useful both in thermal n sound isolation When u close the windows u dont care about any issue happens out there ..
I've got an 98 740il!! In my oppinion the most loaded car for it's age was the E38. There's one called L7 or the Alpina B12. This E38 in specific as Alexander's said it's really base and the video doesn't emphasise that. You could get an endless list of features that back when it was new no one had it and those features are just coming out in the new luxury cars.
I glad so gladDoug finally produced a video review of MY favorite Luxury car of all time. I have owned somewhere over 137 new and used cars in my 55 years and I purchased my 2000 BMW 750iL brand new in 7/2000 for the sum of $104,772. It has all options except executive rear seating options (could not locate one with that option at time of purchase). It came with 16" BBS wheels but I purchased a set of 18" factory wheels as a dealer installed option so I had an extra set for bad weather. The everything still works on the car (including all pixels, cup holders have never been used because i do not allow eating or drinking in any of my cars), and the only thing fixed outside of normal maintenence is replacement of the factory Navigation with a new Mark IV navigation computer after the original quit working this past spring and the fan and shroud and radiator after the fan decided to explode. I have maintained all factory service intervals and any issues were taken care of immediately. The only thing currently at issue is the roof clear coat has started to peel and just the last weekend the check engine light came on and threw a code for "cam positioning sensor" which will be fixed before putting the car away for the winter. Since 2006 the car has been stored Oct 1 through April 1 and since then has never been driven in the rain or snow. From 2000 until 2006 I lived in VA and was never been in snow. The car currently has 131,000. Out of all my vehicles this is by far my favorite and that is why I kept it. The new cars are nice but none have the timeless styling of the newer (98-01) face lift E38s. From the full leather dash to the attention to details, this car is IT! I am reluctant to repaint the roof as the car is otherwise 100% free of even the smallest scratch or dent and I like to keep it all original. It will be a big decision to paint the roof. I actually considered previously asking Doug if I wanted to interview my car, but figured it's better kept a secret now that these are beginning to rise in value. Only about 1,000 V12 E38s were brought to North America each year 98-01 and they are getting more difficult to find. I hope this is because of people realizing the rewards of this car and not because they are not worth fixing. I will keep this car as long as I can drive. I'll sell my 95 S600 (love it because it reminds me of old Mercedes quality)before I sell the BMW and I love that car almost as much.
Doug, My parents had a 2001 740iL when I was growing up and was the car I learned how to drive on. We always thought it was the most beautiful looking car we ever had! Much agree Doug!
Same bro I learned highway driving in the 01 740il I used to drive it to school some days it was burgundy and gorgeous. Thing was a maintenance nightmare for my pops though, a lot of electrical issues for some reason.
@BC J this gen of BMW is arguably the greatest era of any car brand ever. However personally I think the Bangle era has aged better like when the E60 5 Series was introduced everyone thought it was ugly but now it looks so good and still so modern and it’s design has pretty much become the design base of all modern sedans.
@@johndc2998 Chris Bangle, american car designer who worked for BMW. He designed (among others) the E60 5 series, and the 7 series that replaced this one. They were both considered hideous then to the point that people literally petioned to get him fired.
@@placeholdername3206 No idea why, those are probably best looking BMWs of all time unlike the predecessors - most bland and boring BMW desings of all, this and series 5.
My parents had 2 of the e38 "base" model 740i's. Unbelievable cars. Like a Lay-Z-Boy on wheels but it could handle better than anything, and would go like stink too!
Not quite the same thing but for a few years when I was younger, my mom had a 5 series of the same vintage (1999 or 2000, I believe) and I always loved that car. I wanted to learn to drive in it back when I was like, 12. My dad once took me out on the highway when we first got it and just floored it when there was nobody around, doing 120 or 130 down the open, empty roads late at night, giggling all the way while I was planted in my seat. They sold it to some guy who just wanted the wheels off of it cause it had some sport package or something, and NOW, with me having been through therapy and prepping myself to work for the first time a lot later than I should have, I am considering one of those, or one of these, since they seem pretty attainable at a price of 3 to 6 thousand dollars. I'm honestly pretty hyped for it.
@@joaopaulogalloclaudino9671 I live in Florida right now and the minimum wage is about $12/hr, but it's slowly going up. Working full time and saving aggressively it'd take me maybe 6 months to have that much.
@@owendesautels9612 Is a rolls better? Of course - if you're looking at luxury and status symbol. But I would much rather have an e38 MSport than a rolls royce from the early 2000's.
I once owned a 99 750i in Cosmos black, and I adored it. Double glazing, rain sensitive wipers, auto-tilt rear view mirror, heated wing mirrors, television, front and rear phones, memory seats, and tiptronic gear select. The steering wheel moved out of the way, and the seat moved back, to let you enter gracefully. The power was endless, and for the time, the kickdown was awesome. I could drive hundreds of miles and feel like I'd spent the day in my favourite armchair: driver fatigue was never an issue. I still miss her, and her perfect beauty. In a perfect world, I would want to be buried in her, like a Viking chieftain. I'll never own another car that would make me so happy.
@@45orangedonnietherussianmo96 It never gave me a minute's trouble. The only things I ever had to do were to replace a wing mirror housing - stolen - and re-seat a rear parking sensor, which I did myself. I guess I was just lucky, but I also looked after it.
I had a 99 750il in Germany in the early 2000's. I got it dirt cheap because of a big oil crisis. Loved it. Drove it for three years and sold it for what I paid for it. Only downside was doing the 100k km service. 4k Euro and there was nothing wrong at all. I laughed about the trunk. I always thought mine was broken! And yes... The Nav system was as bad as you expect. Mine was in German and it took me months to figure out how to get it to stop telling me to go to the last destination that the original owner put in last.
The seats are actually not massing... they are called Active Seats. They move water between two pouches below your butt in order to replicate a slight moving of your spine in order to ease built up tension from sitting for long periods of time!
Re: Odd rear seat belts When my E34 was new, the dealer told me why the rear seat belts are seemingly backwards. This is a safety feature. It seems that in accidents with conventional belts the rear passengers would be forced towards the middle of the car, banging their heads together in what was called "gonging". By reversing the belt layout the passengers are better held in their seats and didn't smack into one another.
Jake Smith - I do too. 1980s BMW is a lot different than 2010s BMW, a company now seemingly run by a crazed marketing department hell bent on chasing every conceivable market segment whether they exist or not (X6M? 6-series coupes and 4-door "coupes", etc.) with less focus on brilliant engineering decisions. Peak BMW was reached in the days of the E38, E39 and E46 IMHO, and I personally have no desire to own a BMW newer than those. I'm even tempted to do like my father has done and ditch the expensive German machinery and buy a Chevrolet Volt (although I don't have the advantage of solar panels on my roof like he does...)
Ryan Stevens Whats sad is thats with many manufactuers. The 90s/early 2000s was the time to buy a car.I only have a one newer car we bought new(2014) Every car now is gonna be an older, easier to fix ,more reliable 90s/2000s car.The only exemption are the Toyotas which are still good and some Fords imo. Those are the only two companies to use both direct and port on the majority of their models. But man,I can get whats in dougs vid for 12k with low miles.Rather have 6 cars for 100k than 1 forone new 100k dollar anyday. And a voltI have read is a pretty good buy.Im actually looking into getting a used prius. Can find low mileage examples for 10k and less.No car payment,no fuss.
Jake Smith - I don't know about that. As my dad and I have both experienced, there is nothing more expensive to own than an older German car. A seemingly simple $350 Service II would turn into a $2,200 bill when all the misc. broken things were fixed, or they'll just eat you alive with a $700 repair here and a $500 repair there. These old cars are great as long as you can afford the myriad little failures, and with some failures (especially electronics), good luck finding the parts. Trust me, the $8-12K spent on purchasing a car like the E38 in this video is only a down payment, with no end to the payments in sight if you want to keep it in excellent shape, as the owner of this car obviously does (and as did I, and my dad as well). It is because of this that dad currently drives a Volt and I now drive a simple and humble Mazda minivan (with a manual transmission, no less, just like my E34), a vehicle that has been 100% reliable in all the years I've owned it.
Ryan Stevens As for the repairs on these...yeah most def.I work on all my stuff so I wouldnt mind one. They are expensive at the dealer for sure. But again,as a weekend car,be a decent buy and use the other cars for daily driven. Enjoy that Mazda.Good little van.I loved how they came with a stick.Way a vehicle should be!
The rear seatbelts latch near the doors to make it easy for parents to put seatbelts on children or children's car seats. It was a godsend! My E36 5-Series worked that way too.
Doug Demuro I totally agree with you that the e38 is one of the best looking sedans out there, the styling of it is contemporary and it will look great years to come. The 850i , e39 m5 and e38 are the best looking bmw's in existence.
bro don't forget about e36 (esp. convertible). E36 from 2000 era has a timeless design, the car will look great in 10 years when it becomes an oldtimer.
Doug, you should definitely review the especially rare BMW L7, which has double the double amount of quirks and features, than the "regular" e38 seven series!!
I actually have an 01 740i with the M sport package. There are a few things missed in this video... Some of these cars were bulletproof and had an explosive to blow the windshield out if you ever needed to get out via a window. Some had a bag for your skis... There is a compartment under behind the ashtray for extra storage. This car has motion sensors, you can open all of the windows and close all of the windows, including the roof, from the remote. You don't need the key to open the trunk if it's not locked, you just press the lock, it's actually a button... Some came with a 10.4 sound system, meaning, they had 10 speakers and 4 subwoofers, a factory amplifier and fiberoptic cables for optimum sound quality. That radio is actually the baseline, there was one with a larger display. It has heated and auto-dimming mirrors, yes, the mirrors on the doors automatically dim when someone with bright lights comes up behind you... They also have heated automatic windshield wipers, so they come on automatically when water hits the windshield and they adjust their speed as needed. All windows are one-touch up and down. There are ambient lights inside, so while you're driving at night, it's not completely dark inside the car. Auto-leveling HID headlights (1 light blub is $100)... That particular 750il didn't actually have the complete M package on it. The one that came with the complete M package is actually very rare. I've only ever seen one of them. They come with the M steering wheel and sport seats up front. They lied about the power, it's very underrated. As for handling... The best way I can put it... You know the suggested speed signs on the freeway ramps? The ones that suggest 30mph, I do well over 80mph through them without thinking about touching the brakes and the car doesn't feel like it's going to slide or flip. Remove the governor and the car will do over 170mph. As for how reliable they are, well, I bought mine because my father bought one years ago and out of all of the vehicles he's ever owned, that was by far the most well built. I searched the whole country for one and just so happened to find this one in Michigan while I was in California. I sent my father the money and had him pick it up for me. I only paid $1400 for it. Didn't have a battery, so I didn't even know if it ran or not. When my father got it home, he put a battery in and it started right up. Needed basic maintenance... Fuel filter, spark plugs, ignition coils, o2 sensors, MAF sensor, air filter, valve cover gaskets, oil change, and oil filter. The previous owner was an idiot. The only thing it needed that wasn't a part of the basic maintenance was the LCM (lighting control module). The headlight would flicker as it the car was haunted. Was about $40... Oh, I needed some suspension parts too. Lower control arms, tie rod ends, the usual stuff. Did the work myself, parts weren't even over $300... Now for the horror stories... When it comes time to replace the timing chain set, you'll be looking at about $2000-$4000 if you let a shop do it. Most people don't have the tools or knowledge or time to do it. Most people don't think this car is worth it. Most people aren't very intelligent, hints as to why the world is as it is. But thankfully, some of the intelligent few got together and built the e38 BMW. A set of tires, mounted and balanced, you'll be looking at over $700 and if you get really nice tires, you'll be out of over $1k. I opted for the W rated tires rather than the Z rated tires... The set will likely have to be ordered. My oil change, doing it myself was over $80, but that's because I did it my way. Ignition coils were about $300. Registration renewal fee in Michigan is about $300... Don't even bother trying to use the cup holders, they will break and don't hold much of anything anyways. The wood is real and the coating will crack, but you can sand it down and repair them. This car will attract all kinds of gold diggers, not just mean females that want money... They do tend to rust, so you have to keep on top of them and I don't recommend driving them in the snow. While they do go through the snow surprisingly well for what it is, the snow and salt don't do the body any favors... Letting the windows down before allowing the car to warm up will cause the window regulators to break, but no worries, they're cheap, just a bit of a pain to replace. No, I haven't uploaded any videos of my e38 yet. Funny thing, my car was actually built on my birthday... I found it in my favorite color combination and at an unheard of price. Yes, I will be uploading videos of it soon.
Bought the one I had years ago from an eye doctor too infatuated with his new car and let the 7 rotting in his driveway. In 2015 I bought it with 172k on it (01' 740il Anthracite Grey) wasn't a highline or anything. But he had purchased it new in 01, with a sticker of 67,500. I bought it off him needing rear tires, a battery, not much else for a cool 600$. Not saying anyone else could. But I've heard these cars in decent shape go for under 2500$ on more than one occasion.
Yeah and you are right about the M package isn't on that car. Pretty sure you could have had an 01' E38 with the "M Parallel's" optioned to most configurations
Hey man I love the E38 too, I own one with the "real deal" M-Sport package in California, it's the greatest (and probably the rarest thing I've ever owned). I'd love to see your 7, and so I can't wait until you post about it on your channel!
Fun review. I own a 98' 750il (73k miles) and a 01' DINAN 7 (89k miles) The 750 also has dual pane glass and a larger transmission (5hp-30) to handle the V12. The NAV can be updated to a DVD driven system (MK4) and a 16:9 widescreen, all plug and play. I updated my 98' in 45 minutes. The DINAN Ive custom retrofitted the NBT system from a 2015 BMW. Love it Ive been in E38's since 2005 and will always have at least one. They are great cars with timeless styling. I always look back at it after I walk away, and still get a grin knowing its mine while im on this ole' rock floating through space. Cheers!

I nearly bought one of these back in the day. The thing is I am English. So much as I liked it, I also like the Jaguar XJ84.0 which is what I eventually bought. This is one of Dougs ealier video's when he did pick on strange things like how dated the (at the time in period) tech was. He also complains about English not being indicated by a U. I believe it’s the best 7 series ever my father had the 728i and at the same time he had an E46 318i and also a clk 320 but i remember him saying the 7 series was so good he only sold it because of how much it drank. James Bond drove one in Tomorrow Never Dies. I loved that car.
And Transporter
Tupac was shot and died 6 days later in this exact vehicle
Michael Douglas drove one in one of his films. He then bought one. (Not sure if it was an L)
For me, the BMW E34, E38 and E39 models are the most elegant and beautiful looking things mankind has ever designed.
Modern cars feel like they "try hard": Styling straight from a spaceship, electronic gadgets that will only age and break.
Dude i see you on every car related channel possible, you are like a legend to me and i find myself searching for your comments on any car related video!
I hold the keys of 2 brand new cars, but still prefer my good 'old '01 Ford Focus. No technology, just plain driving. I love it
The real problem is not that new cars have tech, the real problem is that 99% of the time they have shitty tech, lack of fluidity, insane input lag, frame drops, everything is slow af, just look at the new 7 series key, yeah it’s cool that it has a screen but what a shitty unresponsive low-resolution low refresh rate laggy screen.
I have a 01 caddy deville in near mint condition 105k best car I ever owned
I love how adding magnetic rear compartments and a warning triangle was “too expensive” but the hydraulic glove box seems reasonable 🥴
Big douggie Doug with the inconsistency
it was not too expensive it was unnecessary for Americans since they don't know what it is. It's like adding an manual in French for cars in USA.
My mom drove a 740iL like this one when I was a kid, and it was my favorite car my family ever owned. As a child, I could stick my legs straight out and not touch the back of the front seats. I felt like I was getting chauffeured and loved that car.

This E38 in specific as Alexander's said it's really base and the video doesn't emphasise that. You could get an endless list of features that back when it was new no one had it and those features are just coming out in the new luxury cars.
This car really is base spec.

My wife bought a E32 730i yesterday...Man, those Cars are sooooooooo awesome😍
Re: Odd rear seat belts
When my E34 was new, the dealer told me why the rear seat belts are seemingly backwards. This is a safety feature. It seems that in accidents with conventional belts the rear passengers would be forced towards the middle of the car, banging their heads together in what was called "gonging". By reversing the belt layout the passengers are better held in their seats and didn't smack into one another.
Ryan Stevens Wish they could put that same thinking into the newer cars direct injection problems.
The 90s/early 2000s was the time to buy a car.I only have a one newer car we bought new(2014)
Every car now is gonna be an older, easier to fix ,more reliable 90s/2000s car.The
only exemption are the Toyotas which are still good and some Fords imo.

This car truly makes Doug happy, you can tell by the way it makes him naturally smile while he is driving.
Yes, I will be uploading videos of it soon.
great paragraph
Subbed and waiting

As an English person who speaks English, I find E to denote English to be what I expected. The BMS at this time were very good. Two years ago I bought an E39 5 series with low miles. It is lovely to drive.
