In the late 90's/early 00's, this is one of the best looking BMWs, with the E46 M3 and M3 GTR. The E38 was not as beautiful as those, but it wasn't as ugly as its successors, especially the G11/G12 with its massive front end. I would say that the E60 was also beautiful, but not as much as the E39. That beauty and the powerful, good sounding V10 engine were the only good things going for the E60.
As an OCD car owner (err...I should say truck {1999 Dakota V6 Magnum SLT Club-cab}), I am very grateful that someone else feels similarly about the car and upkeep of their vehicles. My wife, my sons, and my grandsons all make fun of me for being so picky and I intend on showing them this piece of content but I cannot imagine it will help. I wish I wanted a sedan but it would never fit my lifestyle. Thank you for this content and I wish good health and all the best to you and yours!

If I remember they were called corona headlights due to their resemblance to the sun’s corona during an eclipse. Not sure if that’s true, it’s been 20 years, lol.
My first car 5 years ago was a 2000 540i with the M package, this video was almost emotional for me seeing Doug go over the quirks of the car that made me fall in love with driving.

It goes both ways. It's actually nice that for once a car reviewer is my height and can judge space accordingly. It's very annoying when some dwarf reviewer sits in a back seat of a small hatchback and talks about how spacious it is, even more so because the seat in front of him is pulled up to where he would sit.
This car has way less legroom than I thought it would when I bought it. All the space is for golf bags in the trunk and to make the body beautiful instead of backseat comfort
With a car like this idk why you would want to drive it automatic. And btw the cupholders are only bad for american standards. Here in Germany (for whom those sized cupholders were engineered for) practically every 0.5 Liter bottle/Coffee cup fits perfectly in them.
@@CoDZockerLP i think it´s a crime to make this cars automatic ,before and this is a "before" car there weren´t available cars with powerfull engines with automatic gears it makes them unsafe and not practical to drive ,normall they would install a automatic gear box only to american market ,the more powerfull is the car the more you need to have a shifter and a clutch to control better the car because brakes at high velocities are very dangerous. Ferrari only in the 90´s they start to install automatic transmitions exclusivelly for american market it makes no sense only having brakes to control a powerfull car ,in the 70´s even the F1 cars had clutch and shifter ,now only shifter .i was thinking a powerfull car without shifter would feel like a go kart for kids ,regards
Many of today's popular performance cars are no longer offered with manual transmissions, however with up to 8 speeds, paddle shifters and manual mode, stomping on a clutch pedal isn't required to get around a racetrack or winding road course.

Munshat Rahman it’s a bit interesting that Doug is like “THIS THING HAS THE MOST FUN” (i know English I swear) but it doesn’t compare to, like, a BAC Mono or something like that.
Way back in 1996 I ordered an E39 (not the M) new from the factory. It took 6 months to get it, and it was the best BMW I ever owned. Fit, finish, comfort, performance, features. It was also the last, given the downward slide from there. Kudos to Nakajima the designer, BTW.

I've been the proud owner of two E39:s (standard models, no M) and I couldn't agree more with Doug. The sense of build quality is astounding really, and sadly something they've lost since then. The car in this video is a real beauty, I love it! Hat off the owner.
E39 535I was my first car I actually earned money and bought when I was 22 y.o. Incredible driving experience. I used it as everyday car and each ride home from work was a pure pleasure. It was a whole journey. I had to sell it a year after I bought it because of parents divorce. And now all I dream is to buy another one. Doug, thank you so much for this review. Means a lot to me!
I have a E39 530. Quite possible the best all rounder I have had. Near perfect balance of power and economy, comfort and handling. Looks great inside and out and a pleasure to drive.
My mom has a 520 of this generation. Still has it 20 years later. I had some great memories with this car. I get nostalgic every time I see one of this gen.
I've got an E39 M5... and an early 6-speed manual E60 530i. I think that the E39 530i probably is the best all rounder ( I had a manual E39 528i earlier ). Swapping the 5-speed manual for a 6-speed would improve the E39 even further but I love the straight-6 E39s.
@@lewis72 I habe a manual 5 speed 530i. Could you tell me a bit more about your story/experience? As I'm dying to get a E39 M5 in the future, but considering they are 20.000€/25.000$+ here in the Netherlands I am really hesitant. I'm thinking of just upgrading the 530i with a turbo or supercharge it etc.
@@Phoenix_1991 I'd certainly stick with the E39 530i. Apart from the acceleration, you're getting almost everything in the 530i that you'd get from the M5, plus the 530i is much easier to fix yourself and that M54 engine is rock solid. Plenty of upgrades available; I like the idea of putting a 6-speed manual on one, like the E60 got as standard.
I love how the line breaks over the front wings above the wheels. One of the best design features on the car. My LM Blue 2003 is waiting for its spring drive :)
When I was a kid, my uncle bought one of these back when it was brand new. His was dark green. I remember the noise and speed of it at the time was incredible to me. This video brings back great childhood memories. He also had a Ferrari F355 Spider too.

I just bought an E39 530i manual wagon - very rare where I'm from, and I totally agree with Doug's assessment of the interior. One of the most timeless and high-quality interiors ever made in my opinion; the plastics and buttons are simply the best I've ever seen in any car. Modern cars simply do not compare, at least the ones I've been in don't.
My 2003 runs like a clock at nearly 130,000 miles now. Best car I’ve owned, though like any BMW, it isn’t cheap to own. I’m lucky to have a good garage nearby else I never would have taken the leap. Looking forward to spring.
I had a '98 E38 with the same stalk. When I test drove the car, I noticed how good it felt as well. I could totally empathize with him. After that, every time I used it, I remembered my first time moving it. Ah, memories. I never should have let that car go...
Missed quirk: once you open the ash tray, you pull back on the cover again and it unlatches the ash tray so you can empty it. I had a 2000 M5 for a few years and remember fiddling with the ash tray while just driving and doing that by accident once. It was such a satisfying action I kept doing it over and over even though I had no need for an ash tray.
my dad had a 99 m5 new back in 99 my favorite thing about it was the quality of everything and how it felt so solid i dont think any other car in the world can compare...not a single rattle anywhere you feel like it is the best possible car setup it even smelled like quality and the shifter is the best shifter of all time most satisfying shifter to look at and touch you have to feel it to believe it! to anyone reading find a good kept one and sit or drive in it and you will see what the best car of all time is and no other car has or will ever compare
Fingering Things ✔️ This was BMWs prime time. The E39 and E46 were the best imo. They were modern enough without losing BMW character. The new vehicles are nice, but they have lost the soul and character of what made BMW. The brand has diluted to make more sales to compete against the Asian marques

@Charlie Vetsworth meaningless things like sex or expensive things? Sex is one of the most important things in the life of any human imo. And expensive things give us joy. So how is that meaningless? If you feel like these things are meaningless you should probably go to a doctor...
@Mark Libiak based on your profile picture I'm gonna guess you haven't had enough experience to judge about that yet. Pleasure is not meaningless. If you want to talk about meaning in life we can do that. Fact is if you pump enough good hormones into your head you might think it's "meaningless" but the person that experiences these things is gonna feel great. Afterall the concept of meaning is something we literally made up to FEEL BETTER. Sex does the same thing it makes you feel better. The approach is very different and the side effects aswell. But afterall saying sex is "meaningless" is very very very wrong. As a general rule most things that are natural and make you feel good are good. Sex, eating, sleeping, cleaning yourself. It's most definitely not meaningless
I drove past one of these cars lately, admiring every line... The guy accelerated and gave me a thumbs up! The Alpina B10 always gets some love from gearheads.
The worst is the Renault Megane, the cupholders are under a ledge, so you have to tilt your drink almost 45 degrees to get the bottom in, which makes you just spill it all the time unless you just hold it in your hand until it's half finished :|
*laughs in E36* Standard cupholders were just slightly recessed circles in the inside of the glovebox lid... I'm talking less than a centimeter deep. And the space available above them was JUST enough for a soda can...

Owned an e39 523i and have been in the newer bmw sedans. I will honestly choose the e39 over any newer model because to me, this car is everything i need. Relatively easy to maintain, less electronic faults and decent economy. Would buy one again soon
Beautiful car, makes me regret selling mine, especially as this one is the identical colour and trim :/ Fun fact with the front cupholders - they placed your drink directly in front of the grille in the climate control unit where the car's interior temperature sensor was, so if you put a hot drink in there and the climate was on auto, it would go into full chill mode thinking the interior had suddenly got much hotter.....
He reviewed some cars closers to 1000hp. I believe he also owns an E63 AMG, so 400hp might be much for your average joe, but as a car critique that has seen and driven cars with double the HP, that doesn't seem like a lot anymore. Also, buying a car with 400hp isn't the issue, paying for the running costs is, which may be lower or higher, depending on where you live.
Explains why people really love this generation from BMW. I've owned an e39 M5, e36 M3, e38 740iL, e36 328is, every one of them is incredible. @@poomped53 Indeed, the electronic throttle of the 01 e38 was not as nice as the cable throttle on the 98 e38. As for the best of the era, it's hard to choose. The M5 does everything well in a very ballanced package of luxury, sport, and power. Though I find the e36s more fun as they are more raw.

How have you made the same mistake 5 times? After 2 I would just stop drinking in my car or I’d get a spill proof toddler cup loool
I think ur making a good decision due to reliability
@@FullOfMalarky I'm racing all day, I can't go 6 hours without a drink haha. It usually spills during a drift tho lolol
"Only 400 horsepower" That's about 4x the power of my car lol
Same.
My car only has 178 hp lol
@@Cz007_ let me guess what do you drive, a Focus? Cause that's exactly what my Focus has lmao
@@JuniorColanzi Not even close, I drive a VW
@heasel fatches Wire me the money and I'll get a decent car lol
I had E39 for a year. It is an amazing car. No car feels like it. I had only 2.4 litre I6 engine, but it was a beauty. I will forever miss that car.
"Even if this car has only 400 hp.."
Me: Wth is wrong with this guy?
He reviewed some cars closers to 1000hp. I believe he also owns an E63 AMG, so 400hp might be much for your average joe, but as a car critique that has seen and driven cars with double the HP, that doesn't seem like a lot anymore.
Also, buying a car with 400hp isn't the issue, paying for the running costs is, which may be lower or higher, depending on where you live.

Ahh, the good 'ol days. Back when BMW's weren't gigantic grills with a car attached to them.
I've owned 3x e39s, they're incredible. I've owned Porsches and high end Mercedes but the e39 is on another level
My e39 540i was my favorite car I've ever owned!!! Also have/had many very nice, significant cars
If I were to own a BMW, I would definitely have either an E39 M5 or an E46 M3. Both of those lineages reached a peak in those respective models
this is my most favorite bmw of all time, it had so much character. you should also review the 525, 530 or 540i wagon. i own the 525i wagon
There were only wagon versions of the E34 and E60 gens. No E39 M5 wagons were ever made.
My favorite BMW also. I always loved that body style.
Ultraguy87 im aware of that. i have the 525i wagon . if i wanted “M-like” performance i would go for the 540i wagon
I do agree with doing a review on the more attainable E39 540. Still has the v8 and way cheaper back in the day
Doug is on his third or fourth "favorite BMW ever" by now 😂😉
Explains why people really love this generation from BMW. I've owned an e39 M5, e36 M3, e38 740iL, e36 328is, every one of them is incredible. Great looking, comfortable, sporty, and most of all, full of character. They are very engaging to drive, unlike today's cars that isolate you from the experience. BMW really was at their peak game in the 90s.
@@johnpearson492 Agree totally. I've had E46 328, E36 325, E39 530, and now a Z3M S52 (my favorite)...The *feel* of how these cars drive is unmatched by anything BMW made after ~05 (I argue ~01 when they overboosted the steering and moved to electronic throttle) ... The E39 M5 is the pinnacle of the best era.
I KNEW IT! That’s Ryan’s M5 😂
So epic
