I have a black on tobacco 2001 740il I bought with 178,000km for $13,500 (CAD) last September & I love it. Only car in that price range that gets as much attention as it does. I can’t help but think values are going to rise for them. You see lots of E46, E39 on the road - But E38s are a rare breed.
The absolute pinnacle of automotive design, maybe since the invention of the car itself. There hasn't been another and most likely never will be a car designed so perfectly proportioned and satisfying to look at from every angle. It's the epitome of what good design of any product should be. It's shameful what has happened to the automotive industry today. But perhaps it was meant to be, so that we can all admire the organic beauty and simplicity of cars like this. Thanks to everyone who keeps these cars alive and on the road. I like to think that I'm also part of this community by preserving and daily driving my 2001 Audi S4 B5. Enjoy.
Those buttons next to the seat heating are not ventilated seats, are the buttons for the massage seats. From my knowledge, E38 had no vented seats at all, in any trim. But never the less, it`s a perfect car, I personally have a 740i myself, and I love it.
The correct tyre size for oem 18" rims is 235/50 zr 18" in the front and 255/45 zr 18" in the back, the e38 had also 20" rims, available on the alpina models, it looks superb with 20" rims also

Overall good looking too. However, from certain angles it looks a bit like an over-inflated/bulbous-fied XV10 Camry, the E38 model looks good no matter what angle I look at it from
YES TOTALLY AGREE..........the best 7.series of all the modern BMW era. perfect gt sedan design with perfect lines and proportions. i m in pain seeing those new models of BMW. my favorite color of this one is black......always black!
When people complain about expensive cars are today. There are a lot of cars that are close to what they were back 20 years ago, but they have twice the horsepower, and three times the technology I remember going into the showroom, in the 90s. They were E36s that had the body cladding in Black, they didn't paint them from the factory at that time
Certainly the best car in the world in the mid 90s to the early 2000s. A masterpiece in quality, engineering technology and innovation. Also very reliable and durable.
All the credit for this masterpiece goes to Boyke Boyer, who will be remembered forever. The BMW 7 Series with the most perfect interior and exterior design, in my opinion.
I started following your channel years ago when I learned sketching but I really enjoy your car reviews, too! It's super cool that you go into such detail with the design of the cars. I would love to drive a 7 series - my brother has an e39 and it's such a great car =)
This car has cupholders at the back. They're mounted into the middle of the back seat at knee level. The seats only offer an heated option, not ventilated. Though this specific car offers a 'massage' option in the front seats. Great review btw, my 735i drives like a dream too 🎉
You may have gotten quicker shifts if you’d popped the gear lever to the left, which is sport mode (and then, once you begin to tap it forward and back, it goes in to manual mode).
I miss Lisa, My 2001 E38 740il that was totalled while parked by a drunk driver like 4hrs after I came back from Burning Man one year; her last voyage.
I don't think those seats are ventilated. The button you pressed is for the massage feature. In any case, one of the most beautiful cars of all time. I remember lusting after these when I was 10 and they were new.
These cars look simply amazing in the rare chance that you see one in traffic today. Not exactly sculptural, it's the proportions and classic BMW detailing that makes the E38 stand out. The current 7 series looks over-worked and over-thought in comparison.
The 90s BMW design was the continuation of previous beautiful cars, refined to perfection!! Sadly, today I can't recognise a BMW on the road because there's no theme and the ugliest ever.
Would love to see either a design overview or a review of the D3 generation Audi A8. I think that car is one of the most beautiful cars Audi ever made; especially as a pre-facelift model with the split grille.
Here in Europe i saw plenty of these with a fully color matching bumpers and side rockers in the 90’s so it’s not something what is came after 2001. Probably there was a diffrence between US and Euro versions. Obviously the best candies are always there where they come from so probably these models were being offered with a different trim options in the US than here in Europe.

Also, an interesting note, I was able to purchase a BMW factory TV Tuner module from an E38 and install it in my E46 ZHP- it was plug and play since I already had the factory Navigation system. *Boom* Television suddenly appeared in the menu. It worked great for 3 years until they killed off analog broadcasting. I can still use it for analog aux video and a backup camera.
