- There's a new kid on the block from Dawn, and it has some SERIOUS cleaning power. In this video I put the new Dawn Ultra Platinum POWERWASH Dish Spray to the test to see if it can remove my carnauba wax from the paint.
My wax of choice for the test was Zymol Carbon, a carnauba based wax known for its awesome hydrophobic behavior when fresh. The paint was prepped using Menzerna 3800, followed up with Klean Strip Odorless Mineral Spirits, and then one coat was applied to the paint. This first rinse was performed 18 hours since applying the wax on top.
Dawn Powerwash was applied to the right half of the hood for this test, and Dawn Ultra 3X Dish Soap was used on the left half of the paint.

It's interesting that the Dawn product that finally works is a lot more expensive than its usual dish washing products. Cheapness was its claim to fame, if I recall correctly.

I really love Megiuars cash Wash + because dependent on how much effort you put into it you can vary your clean. Light pressure for a normal wash, more pressure for bug guts, and a lot of pressure to fully strip your protectant and even polish gloss plastic.

Thank you for this video! It worked great to strip off fresh wax which is what I needed. Normal Dawn couldn’t do it. I only left on for a minute and agitated in swirl motion, then rinsed off. And there is no damage/dulling to fresh clear or base coat.

Thanks Neil, Carbon is still a great wax after all of these years! Zymol has always had a very unique formula for their waxes that has stood the test of time, some of the absolute most hydrophobic carnauba waxes when super fresh that I've tested.

WaxMode I wonder if it will strip off Seal & Shine! Been waiting for it to die naturally with Purple Power every wash. Looking to coat and polish. But I might just try polishing it off

Great content as always @WaxMode. My wife picked up 4 bottles of powerwash with some sort of coupon and I snagged one for this exact purpose (haven’t used it yet). Something that works well for striping, and would love to see you do a review on Brake Buster for stripping wax. I haven’t used Brake Buster by itself yet as i mix it with one part clean slate, one part brake buster, one part Fenylab pure wash and one part water in a foam cannon. It takes a couple times to break down wax pending the type. Anyway we really like the fact you that you send time on making videos on stripping products.

Dang that worked fantastic! I might buy this just for my test panels. Like you said you have to be careful when using products like these on cars but it’s perfect for product testing on a test panel. I laughed my butt off when you said punt the bottle because of the sprayer. I am the same way. 😂
Cheers FAB! Yeah I've actually heard some good stuff about the Flairosol sprayers but this trigger must have been a dud. This bottle would have went FLYING at the speed of light if it wasn't able to knock down the Zymol wax with that bent trigger.

AH! I should have went with the Apple scent. I just went with the standard Dawn Fresh scent for this bottle, and it definitely has a strong smell so I know this stuff is very concentrated. Next bottle I'll go with the Apple for sure!

Have found that Totally Awesome sprayed on and wiped off with a microfiber sitting in a bucket of warm rinse water from the kitchen sink does the job. Think the warmer rinse temperature helps.
I am a non professional, so costs are important to me. I have been using a mixture of Dawn Dish Soap, Vehicle & Boat Concentrate Wash & Super Clean as my strip wash. Seems to work well? Then before I polish, I use Duplicolor Wax & Grease removal, soy based. But this new Dawn Powerwash may be the ticket? Thanks for reviewing this product.
Waxmode great video. Have you tried xtreme solutions extreme suds? They claim its ph neutral it is some potent stuff. I applied mckees hydro blue on my wifes car 2 weeks ago.. awesome beads. I just performed a maintenance wash using extreme suds.. 2 oz in a 5 gallon bucket. Minimal pressure applied on wash mitt. it really knocked the snot out of the hydro blue. Wondering if you had a similar outcome

I still haven't gotten my hands on Citrol 266, and it's because I know I'll be blasting through that aerosol can in no time! I've seen such great stuff out of Citrol 266 over at Apex Detail's channel, I definitely need to grab this at least once some time in the future.

Interesting video, nice to see the difference in performance for these soaps. Slightly off topic, but what do you think of Gyeon mentioning in their official video for the Q² Syncro coating, a requirement to wash your car with "hot water and dish soap" after polishing before applying the coating?
This was an oldschool mentality of paint prep early on in the coating market. Some guys are still using that tactic. The idea is that after polishing the paint, an IPA based solution that most guys were using was not effective enough to fully lift and wipe away the remaining carrier oils left behind from the polish. So in order to provide a cleaner surface for the coating to bond better to the paint, a stronger cleaner bath was needed to tackle through those residuals.
I think there's some validity to that mentality. Prep-All has been much more effective for me across the board in knocking down some fresher protectants compared to any IPA based solution, and I haven't noticed any adverse effects using it as a post-polishing panel wipe. So this is why I largely switched over to it and use it regularly.
But the question is whether or not it's truly necessary to go to such lengths to provide a that clean of a surface for the coating to still bond to a very high level or its maximum level, and that's debatable.

Cheers Rob! I'm using the Klean Strip Odorless Mineral Spirits undiluted and I'm not seeing any bad reaction at all with the paint after some pretty heavy usage over the last month. This I'm using specifically as a post-polishing panel wipe, I haven't done much wax/sealant strip performance testing with it. Still love Prep-All, the Mineral Spirits is a bit heavier and doesn't flash off quite as fast as Prep-All, but it's definitely able to tackle through the polishing residue with ease and it's only $12 a gallon. I like it much better than the Duplicolor and Rustoleum products that I showed in this video, but mineral spirits always smell like mineral spirits, not fun stuff in the garage without the mask on.

Yeah I definitely need to take a cruise on up there to OGHQ once this Covid stuff dies down. I'd like to try the OG Decon Soap out, I've got to snag up some of Matt's new tire shine and the Pressol sprayers to try out as well. And I remember when Chemical Guys had the soap under their Citrus Wash label before they discontinued it, never pulled the trigger on it back in the day, I went with Citrus Wash & Gloss instead. I'd also like to try out the Griot's BOSS Foaming Surface Prep in the foam cannon.
WaxMode good call. Yeah. Their tire dressing looks great but perl and wowos tire restorer have been doing great so far. I never got to try chemical guys citrus wash(red) either. So it will be a neat test for you! Foaming surface prep from what I’ve seen is quite strong at stripping surfaces so it would be great for you to test that too. Thanks for responding.
Very interesting results , would be a great video to use it on some stronger sealants to see if it kills them or not and or if it’s better than PBW?
Definitely, I need to grab the Turtle Wax twins out for sure to see how they stack up! I might put up a variety of stronger sealants on the test panel and have a go at them all at once with Powerwash and put that video up on the channel. I'm on my last 22oz of Strip Down so I'll see what we can do with that as well, maybe a few head to head battles for fun.
WaxMode that’s a great idea. I’ve seen a few videos of others with a variety of sealants and waxes on a panel together and taking a torture test. Of course the Turtle wax twins are the staple for this so it will be a great comparison.
Would definitely be interesting to see what that Dawn Powerwash can do against some of the classics and some of the new stuff. Sonax PNS, Meg's UFF, Gtechniq C2V3, TurleWax, etc.
Maybe dedicate one panel to the spray-on/rinse-off formulas, such as WetCoat, hydro2, sio2 blue, and all the newer ones coming out.

How well do you think it would work on water spots?
As a wax stripper, I currently use done diluted 1 to 10 in a ik foamer with 1 ounce of car soap and it completely strips most waxes and sealants when I hand wash the car

Would you use the Prep-All prior to polishing or compounding ? Then would need use something like Eraser before waxing or coating? Prep-All is more stripper then surface cleaner after polishing or compounding correct ? Dawn PowerWash some powerful stuff when agitated.
Prep-All I find this works great as both a pre-polishing prep, AND a post-polishing prep. I mainly use it for post-polishing wipedowns just as I would with CarPro Eraser. The benefit with Prep-All, is it's much less expensive than a gallon of Eraser, it just doesn't smell anywhere near as nice because Prep-All is a blended mix of mineral spirits and naphtha, so heavier solvent smell and I mainly wear a mask when I'm using it.
There are products out there that Prep-All can really knock down when they're fresh, not all of them, products like Seal N Shine can reject Prep-All, but absolutely this is much more effective than Eraser as a pre-polishing wipe to try and knock down protectants. So the utility and price makes it an awesome choice for me, it has also been very paint safe, I have not seen paint swelling or clearcoat damage as a result of using Prep-All quite often but definitely test in a small spot first.
Hey buddy. Haven't talked to you in a bit. Just a quick question sir. Hey, I am getting ready to do a polish on my Nissan 370Z with Dr. Beasley's NSP 45 or Z1 and apply their 1201 Ceramic Coating. I have a really hydrophobic sealant(s) on it right now that is pretty fresh. What do you recommend I do to strip it down before polishing with the NSP primer and then coating it. The NSP primers state they have a "leveling" effect on the clear coat and prime the surface with their special process which gives the 1201 coating (or any other coating) what they claim are "bonding points" for the coating to adhere to to give it a stronger bond to the paint thus, in theory, making the coating of your choice last a lot longer. Essentially, what process do you think I should do to completely strip off the sealants and waxes that are on there now. Should I do a full decontamination wash first, iron remover, clay, etc. What STRIPPING product do you think is the absolute best to strip off everything down to the bare clear coat? I have tried Adams Strip wash, and to be honest, it didn't appear to have much effect on getting rid of whatever sealants/waxes are on there. I used a base of Jescar Sealant and topped that with Polish Angel Rapidwaxx in addition to a few other spray waxes as toppers after each wash so its got a ton of hydrophobic sealants and waxes on there right now. I've essentially been topping and topping and topping the paint after each wash so its probably built up pretty good right now. Looks great, but there is some micro marring on the paint now (That 370Z has some seriously SOFT clear coat so it scratches if you look at it wrong just about). First time using their NSP primers so I want to do it right and get the most out of the 1201. I don't think 1201 is a true "COATING" in the sense that it's a ceramic although that's what it's called. My guess is it's probably more of a strong Si02 based product but the claim is a year or more of protection. I garage my car and rarely drive it so I will probably get some really good longevity out of 1201. Since I am using the NSP primers, I thought it best just to stick with all Dr. Beasley's stuff since they already did the homework and I would assume it will work great on top of their NSP primers. The "Z1" version of their NSP is a PRIMER & COATING BUILT IN with up to a year of protection all by itself without any other coating on top, although I am topping it with 1201 which they claim will add even more durability and longevity. The Z1 is a "ONE STEP". Supposedly a combination of all the NSP primers (150, 95, and 45) and also a ceramic coating component too. It's getting really good reviews across the detailing world. Mike Phillips from Autogeek did a test with it and raved about how good it removed a lot of defects and left a decent coating behind too. I haven't decided on using the Z1 one step, or just going with the NSP 45 which is their finishing polish. I'm going for the most gloss I can get which is why I am thinking the NSP 45 on a finishing pad to try and really get the paint to pop. The paint being so soft, I am thinking the 45 finish polish may be enough to get rid of the minor micro marring and leaving a super glossy finish. I'm going to test both products on different panels to see which gives the best results. SO, phew, sorry for the long intro here, but my essential question........HOW WOULD YOU STRIP IT DOWN TO BARE CLEAR COAT?
Great question Joe. I am very hesitant to use clay unless absolutely needed, the reason is on my test panel when it was perfected, even a mild clay bar with proper lubricant was enough to produce some medium level scratches that would not come out with a finish polish. So I would not use clay to strip protectants unless I know that I have embedded contamination and I know I’m following up with polishing.
Without claying, I’m very likely to just use something like Klean Strip Prep-All right before my polishing step to help soften or tackle through the current protectant so that it doesn’t cause interference with the polishing step. Prep-All has been super paint safe for me, but it’s strong enough to clean up some stronger LSP, maybe not fully remove without multiple applications but in the case of Griot’s Ceramic 3-in-1 Wax which can be very resilient and sometimes bond unevenly, a quick once over with Prep-All is enough to clean up streaking whereas a few passes with IPA at around 20% dilution is not.
Prep-All should be a good prep to use before Dr. Beasley’s Primer, and I’m actually still interested to try the Beasley out, but I’m currently up north away from all my gear due to work and I’ve shut down testing as a result due to work. One day I would like to really go through and test the lineup.

I actually have a gallon of Kleen Strip Prep All (got it based on your recommendation in one of your videos about six months ago) so I will use that as my panel prep prior to polishing. I just wanted to try and get it down to bare clear coat so I can start fresh with the Dr. Beasley's products. I've heard really good things about these Dr. Beasley's polishes. I previously did an entire decon/compound/polish/sealant using all Polish Angel products (Master series) earlier this year and that stuff worked incredibly well. I just didn't get all the blemishes off the paint or I have some induced micro-marring since I did the job due to my 370z having super soft paint. I just want to clear up the paint as much as I can (looking to gloss it up as it has some "haze" in it that I can see, probably because I am a novice at polishing) so just want to try and get rid of the haze somewhat and get it as glossy as I can before applying the Dr. Beasley's 1201 and then maintain it with Dr. Beasley's Advance Coat every month or so just to keep it looking great. I probably won't have to polish it again for quite some time as I don't really drive it all that much so it stays garage kept at all times so it's away from the elements. I've actually never driven it in the rain, ever. You utilize the Kleen Strip right out of the can straight right? No diluting it? I don't have the aerosol, I have the liquid gallon so I put it into a Kwazar bottle.
Is ital much different to carbon?
Currently looking at some as i have nearly ran out of glasur. My current fav is pinnacle souveran, are the other zymol waxes much different to glasur and souveran?

Ital is probably closer to Glasur than Carbon, but not by much. All of my Zymol waxes are very similar in terms of application feel and wipeoff, but usually I get the worst sweating with Ital in the high heat and humid Florida climate. I really enjoy the wax otherwise, as well as Glasur but just have trouble pinpointing noticeable differences on the paint. They even smell pretty similar too. I find myself reaching for Glasur the most.
Souveran is in another league in terms of ease of use and wipeoff, but definitely not as durable or as hydrophobic as any of the Zymol options when fresh. If I really want an effortless wax process I’ll reach for Souveran or Wolfgang Fuzion.
@@WaxMode i have wolfgang fuzion too but I have found it very disappointing, application and removal is a dream but i find its looks and water behavior is below average. It will probably look better on a lighter car though i think.i find glasur looks better on lighter colours too, its brilliant. Do you think i should just try carbon for my black car if most zymols are similar? There is the sample kit too that im considering,it contains concours, titanium and carbon? £99.

What about the non diluted dawn platinum i use that for my dishes it’s just like your standard dawn dish soap more concentrated then the power wash I would imagine. Test that against the power wash.
Power wash is the platinum. Look close at the label
waxes can only be removed with 1st acidic product then strong alkaline bath and then a product that contains Hydrotreated light naphtha is your best bet - like the klean strip. if it still persists only polishing can remove the rest.
Which acidic products do you have in mind?
@@skzion2 a famous in this industry is wheel brightener from meguiars(1:6) , but any low dilution of oxalic acid around 10% will do the job. Don't forget to neutralize after with an alkaline strong apc+ agitation. And never on hot panels.
Don’t hear much from people about oxalic acid. I have found it is a great rust/ iron remover. What is your experience with it?

Yes, Prep-All is my primary product that I use for post-polishing wipedowns.
WaxMode Is prep-all more effective than dawn powerwash in removing a wax coat? I’m trying to remove whatever wash wax the dealership used on my car
@@ChungNguyen-rj5rf I still need to perform some more side by side testing with them, but Prep-All will also do well against the fresh Zymol waxes, but there are a variety of other stronger sealants that will be resistant against both Prep-All and Powerwash.

I'd say he means 1-2 weeks
Short term performance is basically what they show us when they're performing at their maximum level. And this differs between products, some like Sonax Polymer Net Shield can show you incredible performance for months before it even begins to slow down and start to drop off, others like this Zymol Wax can really only show you extreme fresh performance for a few days before it begins to drop off in the Florida environment.

Thanks Matt! Even with Dawn Ultra 3x soap undiluted out of the jug and worked into the paint, it's still not going to have any significant bite to it like the Powerwash has, at least in the short term. My earlier video with Dawn against the Griot's carnauba paste waxes I did 20 washes with Dawn 3X at 1oz per gallon, then a follow up wash undiluted out of the jug and even those were holding up really well against it. So Powerwash definitely has a much stronger bite against the carnauba waxes so far compared to the soap.

On another subject of prep wipe, have you ever mixed Grease and Wax Remover 1:1 with an 50% Isopropyl/water mix?
Basically 50% Grease and Wax Remover 25% water 25% Isopropyl.
I've found it is a nice clean and Flash.
I only ask as you raised the subject of protection "knock down" versus actual total Removal.

Negative, won't be able to tackle through a fresh Seal N Shine. I've got to run and grab another bottle to do some more testing with.
This has a pH of 11. This stuff will cause serious long-term damage to cars if not neutralized. I tried on my wheels and was impressed with how well it worked, then looked up the pH. I won't use it again.

Hey Carlos, I don't believe this contains any micro-abrasives, it's definitely a very watery type of product that looks fully chemical, doesn't feel like it contains any abrasives while touching it.

Haven't tested this out yet but I definitely will! Maybe a video with the improved versions of Seal N Shine and Ice Spray Wax against this Powerwash. I'm thinking both of these are going to be able to reject Powerwash.

I just use Simple Green.
It's been a while since I've pulled out Simple Green. I think when it came to a cheaper degreaser I settled with Super Clean as opposed to Simple Green, but many have great results with Simple Green.

Be mindful that better stripping products most likely have a much higher PH level (8.5>9.5) which can impact the clear coat, dry out trim and components. Now for a reference we all now the damage of insect bug juice and bird poop ( 9.5 + PH) with can eat right through sacrificial layers and etch right down ...so PH matter...stripping fast will have a cost....as a detailer that key focus needs to be very aware protecting the clear coat finish as best you can. For years now auto companies are pumping vehicles with thin paint and thin clear coat (3.5> 4 mm+) . Clearcoat is like paper-thin......So ddetails really need yes, to work smart, efficient, cost-effective but we can not do more harm than good....... our customers trust us....think about that....
The PH is 11 on this product, see the SDS for it.

Yes this also greatly softened and broke down the Proline grout sponges that I use periodically to wash the test panel with. This is a strong cleaner for sure, users should proceed with caution and wear gloves for protection.
