Tennessee Squire here since 1982. Thanks for doing this review. Jack Black is such an American whiskey icon and the mother's milk of my youth, LOL! But it was never made to be sniffed and sipped from a glencairn glass and analyzed for it's nose and palate. One of the old tour guides at the distillery once told me that he enjoyed his Old Number 7 in the evening after dinner, when he would fill a tall glass with ice and then pour in the Jack. He'd sit on his back porch slowly sipping that whiskey until he woke up in the morning. That's what Jack Daniels Black Label was made for! I'll admit that since hearing that I've tried it just a few times. 😂😂😂

Canadian here. I remember the first “bourbon” I tried, back in 1986 (maybe’87.) Being only 19 at the time, my exposure to the world of alcohol had been quite limited. A fair variety of beer from around the world, some generic Canadian whiskies and, of course Scotch; Johnny Walker Red lable. My dad had once let me have a sip of Glenfiddich 12 he had gifted to him for some milestone birthday or something. But, in a bar downtown Toronto on a sunny weekday I decided to be adventurous. I ordered a Jack Daniel’s, neat. Back then it was only No. 7 available. I’ve never been one for mixed drinks or ice. Some higher proofs I’ll add some water.
And I was pleasantly surprised. I don’t know what I was expecting but, I really enjoyed it. I recall telling my friends who had yet to try it, “it is a very decent product. Perfectly enjoyable.”
Nowadays I skip over it for other distillations but I NEVER bash JD. Sure it’s hyped and merchandised beyond belief, but it is a solid whiskey in its own right. Thank you Jack Daniel for introducing me to American whiskey. Dare I say it, at the risk of sounding treasonous…the best form of whisky out there. 🇨🇦 🇺🇸

Picked up the Bonded and Triple Mash last year when they came out; the Bonded was a great daily sipper, but the Triple Mash! It's just so unique & interesting and changes every time I go back to it -- one of my new favorites as there is just nothing else out there like it. The JD Single Barrel Select changed my mind about JD as few years ago and I'm glad it did -- there's a lot going on now in the world of JD.

In travelling around the world, I've really come to appreciate JD No. 7 as something I can order that will consistently and reliably not suck. Would I rather have Blanton's or an 18 year old Macallan? Yes. Can you reliably find either of these in Istanbul, Manila, or Bangkok? Not really. Enter JD. Reliably average, but never bad. Given that it took me 2 years and 17 airports in South America to find a single bottle of Laphroaig for sale, I'm happy that Jack exists.

Doing a tour of the Bourbon Trail, we started at JD's campus. What a joy it was! Beautiful site and full of history. Our guide was knowledgeable and charismatic. Their charcoal process is really cool (hot)! I wasn't a real buyer of JD before then, but that experience hooked me in.
PS Buffalo Trace is the worst campus by far. Place looks like Mordor, tours were done very impersonally from start to finish, and we were promised a chance to buy their rare stock on a tour, but "things changed" in the months before our planned tour that were never communicated. We did a noon tour, but our chance to buy the rare stock was already passed, and it was something that our tour guide spoke of several times during our tour. "If you got here early," he emphasized several times. It was honestly the lowest point in our entire trip. Loved every other campus, but Buffalo Trace really felt like the jaded amusement park of the whole thing.

The story of how Jack Daniels died is both unfortunate and wildly interesting. He always came into his office (which is still on site) in the afternoon, with his assistant doing all the morning operations, including opening the company safe. For some unknown reason, Jack came in early one day. Problem was he couldn't open the safe, so he kicked it. He ended up breaking his toes, but being a real man's man, he never got them treated. His foot turned gangrenous, and eventually he had to have it amputated. The infection continued to spread, year after year, and he kept having to have amputations. After like a dozen years, he finally died of the unfortunate infection he got.
As our tour guide stated, this was a great lesson to learn from: never come to work early.
But really, I am surprised JD has had the success it's had throughout the years. It feels like it didn't have a leg to stand on. I know I am toeing the line with that statement, maybe even putting my foot in my mouth. But really, it feels like they have always stood one foot above the rest.

My intro to Jack was Single Barrel Select and it's still my favorite, my buddies not so much but my palette leans to that one and just the Tennessee whiskies in general. #2 is Gentleman, #3 is Bonded and #4 for me is Old #7. Bonded is an all time favorite for me. I've been trying to find others similar to replace in case they stop making them. (And just to avoid the Jack Label) Dickel comes close. Unclea Nearest I got an 1884, and it comes close, but I think I need to try their 1856, same 100 proof and similar mash and TN whiskey, so it could be closest. For Jack Bonded I personally like that you can get the tobacco note, but it's such a cheap whiskey. Typically that seems harder to find. I do get a sort of cinimmon sweet note on it that you guys didn't seem to get. The Triple Mash I also got, and I did like that it's also complex for the price, but I didn't really appreciate it much before. I thought it was so heavily malty that it was too earthy and strong rye and too harsh for me. But after hearing your notes and going back to it I completely get the strawberry herbal/floral, and seems a lot lighter. Amazing how just hearing what you should look for can help you! I still would say Bonded is one of my favorites, but I may end up liking Triple Mash alongside equally now too. (If anyone has any similar whiskeys I should try LMK)

Jack has come a long way from #7 recently. i'd guess that had a lot to do with the Bib winning whiskey of the year. It's also my understanding that the first BIB that was available is much better than the current, but.. who knows. Either way, I never thought I'd be a fan of Jack Daniels or hunting their bottles, but I am. I just hope some of their regular releases don't become allocated as people stop sleeping on jack. I could see that happening with the SBBP;s, as they're already getting harder to find.

Aside from Old #7 in a rum cocktail, I don't have much exposure to JD. Very intrigued by the Sour Mash, will have it on my list to try.

As so many: tried Jack when I was young. Despite going through several bottles, gave up drinking whiskey for many decades. Look forward to watching this show.

I agree that the Triple Mash is surprisingly really good, and easily my favorite here as well. It is the only Jack Daniels product aside from the Single Barrel Barrel Strength that I buy regularly. The Bonded Bourbon isn't bad, it's just underwhelming.

Interesting tasting show. I agree with Triple Mash as being my first choice. Single Barrel, Barrel Proof is my favorite Jack product overall though. It’s just a bit overpriced in my opinion. I don’t see how you could dislike the Bonded so much. It’s pretty good to me. Not a fan of Gentlemen Jack or #7. They are easy to drink but not very interesting. There are far better options in the price point that are out there. It did not escape me that Trenton was knocking scotch again. I love bourbon. I really do. However, if I am stuck on a desert island and can only bring one type of whiskey with me…..it will be scotch. As you guys always say, drink what you like.

Not old #7 but their new stuff they have upped the game!! Great video and you two are funny. Though I sometimes think how Trenton has the palate for whiskey with how he talks about some food items that he seems to dislike. Higher abv all day is right where all whiskey distilleries should go. 95-100 should be the lowest proof it is proven more flavor is present and not off putting to even new drinkers. Just thinking out loud! Enjoy!!

Jack Daniel's was the first hard liquor I ever tried. At the time it tasted like poison and blacked me out. Now I can actually taste the flavor in it. Surprisingly sweet compared with other liquors. Even a few months ago it tasted like poison to me but it's grown on me a lot in recent days

Interesting thoughts, not all of those are available "easily" in the UK, i have tried the single barrel, barrel proof, which i like, but at £70 over here, i doubt i'd get it again. they do a 90 proof single barrel too (£45) BIB is £40, not tried it, and the "gentleman Jack" tbh i thought it was a gimmick tbh. The standard stuff, well its for mixing and i am not so fussed on it straight.... So since you led me to Wild Turkey 101 (around £23 here) its my go to!
    Cheers

My very 1st whiskey was Jack and coke. Hated it with a passion and mistakenly assumed all whiskey tasted like that. Then a beam and coke. 30 years later I realized it was coke mixed with any alcohol I hated. Still not a fan of Jack and Beam regular but I do have a fondness for Gentleman Jack.
