      Hard for me to get weller anything up here in WI. But I travel for work just enough that I'm able to get SR, found a 107 near Detroit last year and have tasted a 12yr... Gotta say, a lot of the other Wellers are over rated and over hyped. i really really enjoy an ounce of SR once or twice a week.

    Blinds help ground people. Removes the marketing and hype and makes you realize the bottle you dis is perfectly serviceable or the one you seek after isn’t worth the chase.

    • @ShaunShearman
      @ShaunShearman День назад +4

      Totally agree, unless your name is TRENTON as when even after seeing how far down the list his 'favourite' bottle landed He still proclaimed that it's the best one and still his favourite, lol. Sometimes you can't see the obvious even when it's staring you in the face ! You can learn a lot from doing blinds and sometimes what we learn about ourselves is NOT what we thought it would be, maybe it's "I am just a Bottle Snob after all !"......Those damn fake bourgeoisie bottles will get you every time, eh Trenton, lol.
      I noticed that Kurt wasn't so bothered about where EH Taylor landed in the line up, man the guy just sips and says it as he sees it, no preconceptions, just taking names and spitting truth, a man whose humble opinion I always listen to and have learned to respect.

    • @dneuens
      @dneuens День назад +9

      Blinds are fun, but not scientific. After a few sips, your palate is so influenced by what you had before it, not to mention your palate is constantly changing, or even blown out. Some pours also perform poorly because they lack certain notes that punch through, but on their own they have a lot of depth. Maker's Cellar Aged comes to mind in that regard. It has a subtle complexity and sophistication, but put up against most other things near its proof point, your palate favors the brashness of other pours.

    • @realdac7899
      @realdac7899 День назад +1

      @ completely agreed! Definitely not scientific. There are so many variables from what you ate that day, to how long the bottles have been open or just the comp of the blind. But the blind does remove at least the bias variable of hype. If you think you hate SR but it blinds consistently higher than maybe you bought into the hate. My favorite blind is to let ppl try Elmer vs BT and even with the different mashbills most can’t tell the difference or think one is better than the other. They are both just good decent bourbon and worth msrp only.

    • @4mulaBaby
      @4mulaBaby 2 часа назад

      Blinds also nuke your pallette left and right. Your mouth needs to acclimate to what you're drinking. Blinds are not a good way to experience whiskey accurately

  • @DanielDrociuk
    @DanielDrociuk День назад +7

    Blinds are always, in my opinion, allowing for more leveling of the playing field. One thing that is difficult to control for is the fact that our tongues and taste buds sometimes get overloaded and don't "release and reset" easily, such that the next expression you taste doesn't start with the same "clean slate". Think of it like a "lock and key". Sometimes the "keys" don't release from the "lock", to allow another "key" to fit it so you miss elements because previous "tastes" are in the way. As they say, "the good thing about opinions is that everyone has one." The other bias is also chasing the "shiny thing syndrome". It's so great to have options and resources to try many things.

  • @primaltone
    @primaltone 12 часов назад +3

    We're all different, and even bottles vary, but I did my own test, substituting Blantons for Hancock. My results:
    1. Eagle Rare
    2. EH Taylor
    3. Weller SR
    4. Blantons
    5. Buffalo Trace
    I was surprised, but I'm leaning towards blinds focused on choosing favorites being unfair. I struggle choosing sometimes, for good reason. They may all be good, and tomorrow, your ranking may change based on a multitude of factors.

    • @Razieleatssouls
      @Razieleatssouls 10 часов назад

      This is why I like to go through a bottle before truly judging a whiskey. Allows you to pick up different notes over time and form a better opinion. Blinds are still fun though, and my ratings usually stay in the same ballpark.

That said, they're all good and I've repeatedly said that WSR is hard to beat at its price (which is ~ $32 USD where I shop). It's a very tasty, reliable, and approachable daily sipper and it does great duty in cocktails as well.

    3 or 4 years ago when I first encountered eagle rare, I, like many, was impressed and sought out bottles. Being in Ohio we had to make trips to the distillery. When we finally got our hands on a couple bottles of our own after three visits, I took my first sip and was greatly unimpressed. It was only then that I learned eagle rare was a single barrel product. Having tasted most of the entry level bottles, and a few of the rarer offerings I can honestly say now that I wish the top tier were more available...Stagg Jr. and Antique 107 in particular. Really impressed. Just learned that a local fine dining establishment has the George T Stagg available to order at about $90 an ounce. 😱
    So, like Kurt, I will continue to enjoy my consistent favorite, Rare Breed, which I recently heard was going to be offered. Non-chill filtered here in the US.
    Thanks for another great show!.

    Eagle rare needs to be 50-52% abv to be really top notch.
    Or EH taylor small batch needs to be age stated 8-10 years to be amazing.
    I agree with everything else here.
    That’s why Stagg jr is so amazing. It’s basically cast strength buffalo trace. They just gotta do a 10 year 50-52% product and it would crush it.

    Would love to see the old fashioned bracket! Also would like to see some Benchmarks blinded with other Buffalo Trace products. I think the Benchmark Single Barrel beats standard Buffalo Trace hands down.

    Hancock Reserve is the Blanton’s mash bill at a lower proof. Not sure of the age though. It is available in Indiana

    would also love to see riffs on the old fashioned, different spirits, syrups, bitters, etc.
    might not make sense to bracketize it but still

    Not only these the same distillery they are also the same mash bill except for the Weller.
    Rye in an old fashion is excellent.

    I love the old fashioned bracket idea! Usually I gravitate towards rye to get a balance of sweet/spice in the cocktail but I'm still searching for something that's a good mix of affordable, holds up to ice, and isn't too sweet.
    Eagle Rare would win today's blind for me 👍

    Throw a Weller Full Proof in place of the Hancock....these are all so similar and all considered lower proof...you guys like the complexity of the higher proof bourbons. Good video...I have not had the Hancock but really enjoy the other four of these...but I also prefer the higher proof.

    Have you guys done a video that includes the Benchmark series from Buffalo Trace? Those are some banger budget pours. The Full Proof and the Single Barrel can be really good.

    I agree with the rye old fashioned! I’m not a huge rye sipper but high rye bourbons and straight ryes make fantastic old fashioned’s.

      @@tpdtopcop2010 pikesville rye was the first I tried with it because it was not a good sipper for me. It really held up well to ice and sugar. Other cheaper ones I like is wild turkey 101 or old forester 100 rye.
      Old grandad 114 is a high rye bourbon that is also awesome in an old fashioned.

    I was just at Buffalo Trace yesterday and I picked up a bottle of EH Taylor, because that is what they had. Now, when we tasted, I wasn't impressed with the EH Taylor, but I attributed much of that to the plastic cups.
    EDIT: I just tasted it (putting aside some other drama related to the bottle)... it was much better than yesterday's taste. They're really doing themselves a disservice with the plastic cups... but I know why they're doing it. I got that corn starchy cotton candy note, which was good... and then on the finish... and it was a while later... I got a rich butterscotch note. Nothing like what I would normally call butterscotch which would be a hint of a butterscotch candy. This was more like a thick butterscotch pudding... but only in the lingering finish.
