Simplify3d Trick - Angled Supports

- After hanging around forums long enough, I found out about this neat trick in S3D that allows you to create angled supports to cut down on support waste material and speed up your print times. I don't believe it's an officially supported by S3D, but it works!
Follow along as I go through a couple examples and show how to apply angled supports and what it can mean for improved waste material and how much print time you can save.
Also be sure to check out Maker's Muse excellent video on Advanced Support Generation in S3D:

YES! What an awesome trick!
3D Printing Nerd thanks Joel!
A trick: you can watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Langston Danny Yea, I have been using flixzone for months myself :)
Just found this video - THANK YOU! Helped confirm what I was wondering about auto-supports and more efficient manual created supports.
i would really like to see the tree style supports. like my flashforge printer software creates. very fast and small attachment point at the part. and work great for undercut areas
this is awesome and i dont think that many people know about this, otherwise the "big" channels would have made videos about it tbh
AWESOME TUTORIAL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING!!! 😃👌
iv bin printing with S3d for a few years
never knew this haha
thanks ^^
Pretty cool Jim!
Awesome trick; thanks for sharing!
That’s what I need :-) very cool - thank you for sharing 👍🏼
Great tip, thank you very much for sharing
Awesome idea. Now if only S3D had tree supports to make all this unnecessary haha ;)
Thanks Jim
I have searched everywhere in S3d and not discovered this trick.
Craftware though has this feature implemented natively - no rotation of the part needed - just drag to where you want the support to go - a lot more simply - and its free software and a good slicer in other respects too! There are less and less reasons to buy simplify 3D, although I still use it, mostly because of familiarity and because I paid for it.
Cool! I'm sure it'll show up in other slicers as well.
Yep. I've got S3D tuned in perfectly for my machine.....I also have 2 kids under 3.....I don't have a lot of time to learn an entirely new slicer. I'm ok with that :D
Great resource
very cool
Thanks for sharring
I wish Simplify3D had tree supports!
Great! thx for this tip...
Fantastic! Thank you!
R S you’re welcome! Hope it helps!
Genius
Muchas Gracias por compartir ! ! !
i dont know what version of simplify u have but when i try to rotate my object all i get a is a blue circle and i do not get the same thing u do i can only rotate it one plane also when i try to move the object i dont get the same xyz option ither
YES!:) Thx.
nice video ....
hey i got a question to ask you. The verison of simplify3d i am using was 4.1.2. And as i try to begin to add pillar in model like your video. I found out i can adjust a huge big pillar. May i ask what the different between adding a big one and little one like the video 8:33. if the big one pillar did cover the model below or even bigger pillar support than the model. Does the big one (support pillar resolution 50MM+) do the printing job better ? Mean while i don't need to keep place many different pillar am i correct if i do place a big griant pillar support ?
Try it both ways and look at the result. I dont see anything wrong with your idea.
clever, thanks!
knight2255 you’re welcome!
i hit the rotate tool and it does not give a full range of movement like that. please explain. we only get the blue circle.
i was wondering the exact same thing how does he get the full rotation i also only get a blue circle when i try to rotate and when i mover it i cant get that ither
Thanks for the video Jim. At 3:16 the screen shows rotation arcs? Is that a standard feature in S3D?
YesUCan yes
You have to enable it. I’ll find it when I get home

@@jim2386 You just made my week. I can't believe just about none of the tuts online mention that when it's so awkward to rotate a model without this function. Thank you my friend.
Awesome trick!... Looks like 4 people prefer Cura...lol
Nice Jim! I may see if I can make this work for a helmet print.
How I Do It I’ve seen one person do it with great results. I’d suggest something smaller first to get your horizontal offset correct for the first few layers then switch to your normal horizontal offset. Only should need a few layers of tight offset to get it to stick and then switch to your normal offset.
Haven’t used it a ton yet, but everything I have has worked great.
This is a huge tip! love it but use your buttons man! lol Thanks for sharing.
I'm just now learning. So bare with me. Does it matter what kind of laptop your using in order to 3d print. I have more questions. But I don't want to get on to your nerves
I mean, software has minimum specs and operating system requirements. But if you meet them it should be fine.
Dude.... If you print in Black filament, use a white background, like hang a white sheet or something... or use a white filament if you are going to keep using a dark background... otherwise we can't see what you did...
Edward Paulsen Thanks. It’s what I had at the time but I’ll see if I can swap colors for future ones. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@jim2386 It was a great tip and somewhat similar to what I had done manually, but this cut the process time wa-a-ay down! Part of why I subscribed...
