    Kumquats go really well with black tea, like an English breakfast. I can't stomach eating too many, but if you just cut the top off and squeeze one into your teacup, it's better than a lemon or lime. If any of you are black tea drinkers, you owe it to yourself to use a kumquat and some raw flower honey at some point.

    I love Kumquats. The combination of sweet and sour is just so good. They're also super easy to grow, and they're one of most cold-hardy fresh eating citrus (they can handle somewhere around 10-15 degrees when mature). They also grow well in pots for those who can't grow them in the ground.

    • @jasonsutor6788
      @jasonsutor6788 3 года назад +2

    There were limequats at a store here in MO a few weeks ago. They tasted exactly like lemon to me, too sour by themselves so used them in tea and drinks.

    Growing up as a kid on the coast in Mississippi we had those alot. Specifically the miewa or little round ones if I misspelled that. Idk if they are native there or because we have a high amount of Vietnamese families after the war but we ate them a lot.

    The first time I tried kumquats I didn't like them but because know it has been brought to my knowledge that there are other hybrids that might as well be better, I would try and find those!

    I grow fukushu and meiwa and I've tasted Nagami. I absolutely love the fukushu. It's the perfect balance of sweet and sour and I don't get much bitter at all. It is on the larger side but I find it to be extremely flavorful, satisfying and refreshing as a single bite fruit. I have a big mouth;)

    They only rarely come into UK supermarkets. It used to be the delicious oval one with many seeds, but has been the pointy one with few seeds. My Mum used to have one as a houseplant, and whenever I visited, it was covered in delicious fruit, but my parents would not belive me when I told them they were edible! They are the only 'orange' in UK supermarkets that tastes of anything at all, but are very expensive, and usually chill killed, so the day after you get them home the pointy end has turned to mush. I try to buy them and plant seeds whenever I can, but, so far, they always get to about 4" high, and then the leaves turn yellow and drop off. One year, I had 12 of them, in small pots, and every one died at 4" high. :( I grew a little tangerine from seed this year. Trying to hold it at a foot high, but no flowers yet.
    Here there is only one variety of lime 'Tahiti', and it has no pips at all, but is less likely to immediately turn velvetty blue like the chill killed lemons do. You have the best job in the world! Here there are hardly any fruit and veg varieties in superstores, and nearly all of it is ddead, and rots if you don't put it straight in the fridge. Kids never get to taste anything ripe. It's good to see so much enthusiasm in other countries. I used to like the California Rare Fruit Growers monologues on growing exotic fruit from pips. I had forgotten about them till you reminded me. Another good resource is PFAF 'Plants For A Future', which tells you about the uses of your local wild fruits, that hardly anyone (in UK believes ou can eat. I've even had school kids ask me what cherries were, when I was picking them off trees in the town centre. Even the pigeons wouldn't eat them. They only eat dropped burgers. :(

    My dad has a kumquat tree and I like to munch on them when I visit but the ice storms that hit the South last month did in the last of the kumquats. I don't think it killed the tree but I'll have to wait till next year for them.

    I tried a few kumquats years ago and they seemed little more than a neat oddity, a citrus with an edible rind. I found the inside was too sour and full of seeds to be something that I would pay money for again. Though now I'm wondering if the ones I had just weren't that good.
    Seems like the crosses defeat the biggest drawing point of the kumquat by adding the typical bitterness and astringency back to the rind. Would be interesting to see them crossed with a citrus like a Amalfi Coast lemon that doesn't have much bitterness in the rind either but are very aromatic.

    Have trees of all the above varieties, minus the Nagami, but with the addition of the Marumi---which is much like the Meiwa. I have really enjoyed this guys channel over the yrs and was a member of the Arizona Rare Fruit Growers Association for a few yrs. But he really disses these---not sure why. I love almost all of them & don't really get the bitterness--minus the Nagami, which is usually too tart. I can even pop my Eustis Limequat whole, as it is NOT quite as sour as a regular lime. They are sour but tolerable---and very tasty. They as also very healthy, with the combo of rind & pith...

    A Kumquat crossed with a Pomelo would be cool if possible. Would it be tiny sweet grapefruit or sour 100% piff?
