@@Sea-Salt Unfortunately, there was a fairly bad rule Disney had for shows. Quite literally, the 65 Episode rule. It's mentioned here briefly, but you need to understand that EVERY SHOW that wasn't extremely, insanely popular got shut down as a result prior to Kim Possible, which was the last show subjected to it before it's fourth season. There are a few exceptions aside from the highly popular shows, but the rule was responsible for a fair number getting shuttered. And no, the rule wasn't as asinine as it sounds. It was based almost entirely on the rigid schedules of television programming. By the mid 2000s, it had loosened up a lot, what with online network streaming, video on demand, and dedicated channels.
From the success of this series, Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle went on to create Kim Possible, another quite beloved Disney animated series that actually succeeded in breaking that dreaded 65 episode syndication rule.
The movie that came afterward was so awesome. I watched it as a kid and it blew my mind. I thought it was so cool how there was a star command and different planets.
Zurg was HILARIOUS in this iteration. The show had a genuinely great sense of humor overall. And it still had some genuine drama to it. What's not mentioned in this video is that the villainous plot in the first three episodes/movie was to steal the LGM's Unamind and use it to mind control the whole galaxy, and it WORKED. The only reason Buzz and his team were able to fight back was because they happened to not be on Star Command when it was hit by the Unamind ray, and the reveal that all of the Space Rangers on board were now mind controlled slaves of Zurg was TERRIFYING. It might be one of the best direct to video movies Disney ever released.
@@thelastholdout Agreed! I didn't have the VHS but as soon as he started talking about and showing clips from those episodes a whole flood of memories and emotions came back. The drama and execution of it were excellent (at least for the time/as a kid, obviously there's plenty of common tropes involved), but like Zurg rewinding the memorial speech was *brutal*! As an aside, while watching this I couldn't help but think that this version and role of Buzz went on to influence Kronk's characterization in the Emperor's New Groove. Like the villain lady hitting on Buzz and him deflecting to the clams felt like such Kronk delivery.
STOP THINKING you will ruin all the NEW representational Disney pixie magic. Just stop thinking right now. Oh yeah, and go buy, buy, buy Disney products.
Angus MaClane, director of lightyear and worked on Toy Story and Star Command, explains that Lightyear came out. Then Star Command was released as a show with Pizza Planet as a sponsor for the show, hence the presence of LGMs (who are Pizza Planet properties and not Buzz Lightyear, which is why they do not remember Buzz in TS1) with Buzz and Zurg being the only concepts the show adapted from the Film.
@@Autoinque I remember when I was little the grown ups told us if we lied, we would have to keep on lying and the lies would get so big we wouldn't be able to remember all the fiction we created, where if we told the truth, we just remembered what happened. Angus never heard that or ignored it.
@@Autoinque A plausible explanation, but I think it only makes it more obvious that they're trying to readjust the lore so they can push out more "socially relevant" content. I honestly wish they would stop recycling the older franchise and just do a next gen of toys. Bonnie had a lineup of her own which they could have used.
It's weird indeed. Everywhere I comment, people tell me how much they love me and my videos. Sometimes it is annoying. But right now it would be okay. So say something nice about my content, dear car
If you like Patrick Warburton, aside from Kronk in Emperor’s New Groove, he’s also fantastic in The Venture Bros. as Brock Samson. Diedrich Bader is also really great in both Batman: The Brave & The Bold and Harley Quinn, where he seems to be the go-to Batman when they need a straight man to a more comedic show.
The Buzz vs Evil Buzz thing feels like a callback to the old star trek episodes where there's an evil alternate universe version of every character, especially Will Riker
@Michael Taylor Its probably too late for him to cover the character now, but that was the one I was looking forward to the most. I find it funny that as a kid his name went completely over my head, but later in life realized what it was a reference to, and a fitting one at that.
It's kind-of nuts how much personality all of these characters have looking back. I mean, you have a no-nonsense princess whose cracking jokes and taking charge, a lazy goofball robot, the likable red alien guy who sucks at his job, and the well-meaning but kind-of inept human protagonist who tries his best to do what's right. ... Wait a second, did I somehow just describe Futurama?
... who fly around in their retro rocketship going on adventures full of references to sci-fi pop culture while putting their own comedic, exciting, and heartfelt spin on those old tropes? Yeah, makes sense why I love both shows so much.
Wow, what a great concept for a show. Pixar should totally make a movie about this. No way they could mess a Buzz Lightyear movie up and disappoint fans of this show. * slowly turns head to glare into the souls of the Pixar writers *
Huh... I was about to say "well, isnt that him?", but it turns out that Jim Cummings was only a guest star on one episode of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
@Tree Branch Studios I assume you’re referring to the late Long John Baldry of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. If so, then yes, Wayne Knight used a startlingly similar voice for his take on Zurg.
To this day I don't think anything has made me laugh as hard as Zurg on the edge of victory with his Grande Hornet only to have Buzz arrived with the Star Command Venti Ranger, prompting Zurg to ask one of his minions, "Wait, wait, is venti bigger than grande? I can never remember."
Been watching clips of the show here and I think Zurg himself may be the best part of the show. He is very Skeletor-esque in his actions. How he laughes constantly as his plans go well and how he just revels in being evil for evil's sake. And at the same time the writers make him enough of a threat that he isn't just a joke. Even mixing it in brilliant way. A standout moment for me was when Zurg was not going to pay Warp for some mission he failed to complete. Warp grabs at Zurg and you hear a sound then they show the robot Hornets around them had armed and pointed their guns at Warp simply because he touched Zurg. Then you see Zurg just glaring down and says, "Do. Not. Touch. ME! I have a real thing about personal space." That instant shift form terrifying evil emperor to silly normal guy was always a great bit.
He reminds me of Swayzak, a character from the Cartoon Network era of Toonami! Imagine if they'd continued using him in TIEs. In the meantime, we have this show and ReBoot!
The sheer joy that Patrick Warburton took in the character of Buzz and his adventures really elevated the show, it was hard not to enjoy it when he was having such a good time.
Man, I'm the philosophical kind of tipsy right now where your comment started me thinking about Toy Story-universe Buzz Lightyear memes... imagine what we could have here if this show had gotten any kind of legal DVD release, then multiply it by, like, fifty. 😂
This is what I was waiting for the Lightyear movie! Rich colors, diverse creature and aliens that can talk, and a lot of fun and cheesy 90s adventure. Not a bland, dull serious and non creative animated version of interstellar.
I was a bit obsessed with the show at the time, hell I still was in 6th grade for a bit, because i had a art project and went "Hey, Star Command rerun is on, Ooh, XR, that looks a challenge to recreate", and I did, out of construction paper. Years later, I found out a higher up at Pixar hated this series and it's the reason it isn't on Disney+, so we were robbed, by one man apparently. At least I can still watch it cartoon sites.
22:33 I don't think I believed in Santa Claus when I first watched "Holiday Time". I mean, how could Santa visit every house on Earth--let alone the universe--in a single night? Then this episode explained that Santa Could freeze time and my little seven-year-old brain went "Yeah, that makes sense," and I started believing in Santa again.
By this time in the 90s, voice acting became a big fad in Hollywood. Sort of a way to gauge if you were a list or not. It started with Batman TAS, but really picked up in Hercules.
That’s honestly such a hilarious concept! A person’s emotions are unaltered by the stories of Buzz’s heroism, but is instead inspired by Buzz offering a robot (whom I assume would be unable to digest food) the last bowl of lime sherbet. That’s just funny!
And it’s the moral of the story, to boot! Booster and Mira told stories about Buzz being good at destroying robots, but power is not what makes a hero. The professor wanted to know if Buzz was a good person, and giving up the last lime sherbet was proof of that. True heroism is not about beating things up, but about being nice. It’s a pretty powerful message to send to kids, and it doubles as a punch line!
8:56 Your recounting of the Rogues Gallery left out my favorite recurring villain: NOS-4-A2 the energy vampire. His episodes had this neat vibe of monster movie by way of sci-fi, and the final two-parter he was in ("Wirewolf" and "Revenge of the Monsters") had some of the biggest paradigm shifts in the series.
YES!! The energy vampire! Dude, this is so weird. My dad literally just mentioned him out of nowhere the other day. Apparently he had to look high and low all over the internet for a Nos-4-A2 action figure! But it (and the character) was DOPE! XD
I lent my "Buzz Lightyear: The Adventure Begins" DvD to a work colleague the other week. He didn't quite believe it was a real thing until I showed him and was surprised at how good it was. Chalk up another person really hoping it turns up on Disney+
This voice cast has everything: Seinfeld supporting players, a Reno 911 star, beloved character actors, a Python, a Skywalker, and the dulcet tones of James T. Kirk!
Funny seeing you here on this side of RUclips. Btw when’s the next video releasing? I’ve always wondered what would happen if American troops fought in Stalingrad (impossible transportation, ammunition, and communication issues aside)
Here to mend my broken heart from the blandness of the new movie. This, along with the Aladdin, Tarzan, Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmatians, and Hercules series were a big part of my childhood. (Emperor's New School didn't fit with my schedule back then, unfortunately.) Edit: I love Mira Nova. She is legit what female empowerment of any skin color should be. And Zurg was fantastic in this series. No "villains are just misunderstood victims" nonsense.
Hercules was fantastic. I loved how the show actually came up with reimagined takes on classical Greek myths, including a rare non villainous take on Medusa as a sweet girl with trust issues, who ultimately gains faith in humanity when Hercules learns who she is...and shows up with a bouquet of flowers instead of a sword, because he's an incredible sugar cookie.
Mira Nova was so capable. I admired her even while I was a young 6 year old. Very thankful for this show perhaps implicitly informing my opinion on women and girls as not just damsels in distress. The early 2000s were a well-meaning time and not as vitriolic as the past decade would make you believe.

I have always been in love with this show and it really sparked my love for Sci-Fi in general. part of the problem with lining up so much firepower in the voice talent department is that every. single. release. of the material requires a ton of legal haggling with people who have tight contracts and fancy attorneys. i'd bet anything that the main reason this show isn't available on any disney vod services is because they just can't work out the particulars with all the actors involved so that everyone gets paid and nobody gets sued.
Here's hoping that Pixar's upcoming film "Lightyear" is incentive enough to include Buzz Lightyear of Star Command to Disney+. They could capitalize on the hype for the movie.
Unfortunately Lasseter was still in charge when Lightyear was in preproduction so he probably still enforced “no Star Commend cartoon” so yeah. Even though he left at the end of 2018, he still had influence that’s hard to shake off
@@carsfan1995 From what I heard, Lasseter "hating Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" was more implied than anything, and even if it was true in the early 2000's, it may not have been the case during Lightyear's preproduction, but who really knows for sure. It may be possible that there are some legal issues getting the show on Disney+. It wasn't Pixar who were directly involved in the making of the cartoon. Sure they provided the CG intro to the film, but the show itself was made with the help of a different studio.

I second the addition of "Wander Over Yonder." Sadly, everyone associated with the show has long moved on to other things (good, consistent work) so the odds of it getting revived at this point for a proper third season are basically nil. And if they did, it would probably be all different animators and writers, so I think it's best to leave it as a flawed incomplete gem...that would be an awesome addition to Disney+.

It should be noted that since I watched the new Lightyear film in 2022, I’ve looked at the idea of a reboot of LBOSC much differently as the conceptual framework has not been seen through by any reliable network. Also, I’ve made my own review and synopsis of the plot and post-Mortem success of the show itself.
That first bit about Aladdin finally clears up why the "Return of Jafar" started with a new character that everyone seemed to know already. It would've made sense in the context of a TV show with a wider canon world. The line "Abis Mal knows magic!?" confused me to no end as a child. Like y'all just met this clown; how do you know whether he normally does or does not know magic.
Except that Abis Mal first appeared in Return of Jafar, because the series takes place after that movie. As for the line, I always thought they were surprised because Abis Mal just doesn’t seem like a guy who would know magic.
Magic is still considered to be a rare talent in their universe (although somewhat less so as time went by), so it was still surprising that a lowly desert bandit supposedly had such talent. Besides, if they had known Abis Maul previously, him having access to magic wouldn't have been a surprise at all, as managing to acquire various magical artifacts, creatures, and spells (first and foremost the lamp and bottle of two different genies) was the only reason he was ever actually a threat.
*remembers young me watching pirated episodes of this show online and finding the vampire robot hot* no no, back into the memory hole with you, embarrassing childhood memory.

One of my most favorites and most mature episodes out of this series was the one where Team Lightyear went on vacation to that beach planet and XR tries to cheat at a casino, but they don't let in robots so he disguises himself as Booster. He gets in and ticks off a fish crime boss who puts a bounty on Booster's head and has whole bunch of assassin's trying to kill him. That episode had gambling, crime bosses, and assassins trying to kill someone. You just don't see that kind of stuff in a kid's show these days.
In Toy Story 2, it seemed like Disney was opting for more of a "Darth Vader clone" voice, than the more expressive voice of Star Command. That's honestly a bit funny, since Disney now owns Star Wars. Now it's all self-parody.
Man, Kevin keeps bringing my childhood back, I remember I was so obsessed with this show when I was in sixth grade, I still remember I would toy with the idea of me and some classmates to be the Lightyear Team, childhood is so good.

The Buzz vs Evil Buzz thing feels like a callback to the old star trek episodes where there's an evil alternate universe version of every character, especially Will Riker

Fun fact: The recordings in all real-life Woody toys when you pull the string on his back were also all recorded by Jim Hanks, rather than Tom.
actually, every appearance of "tom" hanks outside of films for games, shows, etc. were actually done by jim because tom really couldn't be bothered

Making Zurg similar to Skeletor does make sense since both shows kinda had a similar fantasy action figures vibe
That was from the episode The Torque Armada and slight correction that henchman was Torque not Warp Darkmatter

By this time in the 90s, voice acting became a big fad in Hollywood. Sort of a way to gauge if you were a list or not. It started with Batman TAS, but really picked up in Hercules.
@@Loremastrful Cue Mark Hamill as Joker.

That’s honestly such a hilarious concept! A person’s emotions are unaltered by the stories of Buzz’s heroism, but is instead inspired by Buzz offering a robot (whom I assume would be unable to digest food) the last bowl of lime sherbet. That’s just funny!
Indeed, XR experienced a short circut, but it was the gesture that counts!
Edit: I love Mira Nova.
Mira's voice actress then did another great job in another similar role. except she was a villain with green-tinted skin.
The Tarzan show genuinely whipped - it was so good
Mira Nova was so capable. I admired her even while I was a young 6 year old. Very thankful for this show perhaps implicitly informing my opinion on women and girls as not just damsels in distress. part of the problem with lining up so much firepower in the voice talent department is that every. single. release. of the material requires a ton of legal haggling with people who have tight contracts and fancy attorneys. i'd bet anything that the main reason this show isn't available on any disney vod services is because they just can't work out the particulars with all the actors involved so that everyone gets paid and nobody gets sued.

My older brother and I grew up with this show, I’m glad that there are still a lot of people who have not forgotten about this show.
Everything animated Knight or Warburton touch turns to gold so no wonder I have so many fond memories of this series
wow what a stacked show i can’t believe it’s not on disney plus watching this video brought back so many memories of watching this show as a kid
*remembers young me watching pirated episodes of this show online and finding the vampire robot hot* no no, back into the memory hole with you, embarrassing childhood memory.
I'm surprised they never mentioned the Eons, those guys were weird. I still remember the episode where they turned the alien delegates into zoo exhibits and a stunned Buzz telling a feline delegate; "I'm here to shave you."
This show was the shit when I was a kid.
This show was one of the first memories I had as a child, this brings me so much nostalgia!
I have a terrible feeling Pixar is going to completely retcon this show with their upcoming spin-off feature “Lightyear”.
That's basically what's happening. BLoSC was supposed to be the 'in-universe' show that the toy Buzz came from, but now they're retconning the toy Buzz to be merchandise from an in-universe movie instead.
@@tehdipstick I think it's more a prequel to buzz's story. Like Buzz's rookie years
Yep!
Retcon? In this context wtf does that even mean? It's canon in the sense that it's a "memory" for Buzz dude lol
@@ShakeyMcStuffin it's just his memories of what he thinks were hid rookie years
The show was really picking up when you had the evil Buzz kicking in the main universe to only get the axe.
They gotta slap the show on Disney +
@@pyerack Well I'd like to see the show at all, all I've ever seen is the pilot episodes film and the 30 second clips the game gave me.
@@pyerack They meant put all the episodes up, not make new ones.
@@pyerack no, she means at all. They dont want the old series to stream. For personal reasons.
...and they are rebooting it so yeah dude. Nightmare for ya.
@@shonenjumpmagneto Who said they are rebooting it?
Everyone should be cancelling D+ like Disney cancels employees who dare to defy the twitter mob.
knowing disney, now that they rebooted the buzz universe with "lightyear" there's even less of a chance this will ever come back, no matter how bad it is.
Yup. A lot like everything Disney touches these days.
the plot about buzz losing his partner and then later finding out the partner is alive and has been working against him is quite literally the plot of spies are forever
It was done in Goldeneye too
Every so often, history repeats itself.
Its literally a classic trope that has been used over and over before and after buzz lightyear
Hi Sean Bean
This show’s arranged marriage with ulterior motives episode taught me about maintaining the status quo SO MUCH that when Teen Titans did their own episode with a similar plot, it ruined the dramatic tension for me.
Yea, I think it’s a law that every cartoon with a motley cast of protagonists has that episode
I find it sad that as a kid, this was just another show on TV among the dozens of good shows. But looking at it now, it seems like a lot of love and care was put into it, and it had an absurd amount of talented people. Sure took things for granted back then.
I'm so happy you made this, i was half convinced the show was a shared fever dream my sister and i had
I've felt that way about shows I saw as a kid on Kid's WB like Histeria!, Detention, and Generation O!. I'm so glad that when I got older, I searched the internet to find any mention of those shows to prove they were real.
So I see how this video acts as Kevin Perjurer’s personal mission to get this show on Disney+ and I’m 100% on board!
Literally paused the video at 3:14 just to say how much I loved Goof Troop growing up!! Pretty sure the adults around me were so tired of Goof Troop.. because literally.. I would watch every single episode any chance I got. My mother had recorded some episodes on to a VHS tape ( remember those?) 🤣🤣 33-year-old now...yet I still got super hype when I first saw it pop up on Disney+!
Goof Troop is just one of many examples of how wonderful cartoons used to be!
You may now return to your regularly scheduled program! 😁
I LOVED this show when I was a kid, watched it often on Toon Disney when that channel was still a thing. Makes me a shed a tear. I even had a toy version of his ship I got at the Disney Store
Patrick Warburton is love, Patrick Warburton is life. And we are blessed a legend like him exists. He's Buzz, Kronk, and the Soarin' chief flight attendant. What's not to love?
I also enjoyed it, but I was VERY young so I don't remember anything besides wondering where woody was
Bro i got into a HEATED debate with my GF when we went to disney land and saw patrick warburton doing the opening.
I said "look its buzz lightyear" and she said "you know tim allen is buzz lightyear right?" I told her there were 2 and she didnt believe me, we went back and forth for like 20 minutes until she finally looked it up.
Don't forget he played the wolf in Hoodwinked
Not to mention BROCK SAMSON, world's greatest assassin, and bodyguard to one (1) weeping man child
This was a staple Disney cartoons for me growing up. Thank you for reminding the world how amazing it was
fr
I loved this show SO MUCH as a kid. However, I found the latest "Lightyear" movie truly depressing. And the Zurg/Buzz twist was the WORST IDEA BETTER.
Who likes the star command zurgs voice over the toy story 2 one?
Right here!
In Toy Story 2, it seemed like Disney was opting for more of a "Darth Vader clone" voice, than the more expressive voice of Star Command. That's honestly a bit funny, since Disney now owns Star Wars. Now it's all self-parody.
@@MrNobody47710 not the first time the muppet show had Star Wars and they sung once upon a star
Man, Kevin keeps bringing my childhood back, I remember I was so obsessed with this show when I was in sixth grade, I still remember I would toy with the idea of me and some classmates to be the Lightyear Team, childhood is so good.
Dude you guys are becoming equally as good producers as some of the productions you cover. I stand by my comment from 2 years ago. Hands down you guys are the best production value on YT.
I love how a lot of characters have a wide range of designs, expect from the few women, who are sexy lady, and sexy lady with a really big head. I also love that in the past decades we barely moved from that line.
It's crazy that the reboot never included these characters.
The fact this isn't on Disney + yet is something I'll never understand.
Nathaniel it should be on dsney plus now
Probably because Disney forgot about or have no interest releasing it I assume even though it was popular in Disney Channel back then
No BLoSC, but at least we got a show about Pamela Anderson's sex tape.
So...that's a thing...I guess
john lasseter didnt like it because it wasnt edgy or dark enough. thats why its not on disney plus
I'm still waiting for them to put this show on Disney+

Fun fact, the 2nd place worldwide speedrun holder for Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Steb, is the creator of the SILENCE BRAND meme.
I wish this show was on Disney+. It was a show from my childhood. Patrick Warburton is a great actor and the fact that he voiced the show’s title character is awesome
