This was one for the ages! I finally got out to go camping behind a sign. It took quite a while to find the perfect sign, but it was worth it! There was no view from the highway eastbound lanes and very minimal exposure on the westbound lanes. Basic backpack and general gear. I had a hammock, to use as a bivvy in case of rain, but the weather was pretty good.
Hunkered down and had a blast!

The hardest part about trying this in SoCal is all the competition. A sign like that would already have 2-3 permanent camps set up.
I was thinking of trying this in LA, and then I realized it wouldn't be as fun since every good spot would already have dozens of homeless occupying it

99% of folks wouldn't. But it only takes 1 person to call the cops and if you've been homeless a while or stealth camping frequently, ya gotta be careful.
If you knew the town of Camrose you’d know it’s a small uptight little town with its own police force with nothing to do. Chances he spent the night in jail are pretty high
But someone might, and make that ringy dingy to the clingy, and boom camp is canceled.
Whether something like this is risky or not, the thought of the danger makes it feel 100x more satisfying. Went to an old military base a while back with some friends, and the entire time we were jumping into bushes hiding from coming cars, and climbing around big rocks to remain stealthy, but a few days later we discovered it was a public area and we can be there. But the thrill of that first visit made it the most memorable. ..And the most bloody. xD

Usually how it goes. There is always ONE variable that can ruin a spot, otherwise it's awesome. ..The only places that are usually very safe are not in towns, and no where around houses or people.

That's happened to me, more then once. I go to alot of parks. Once in great while someone will be there.

With all the negative stuff going on in the world I thought I'll watch a stealth camping video since it keeps popping up. That was a few weeks ago, I can't tell you how many I've watched since. Thank you Steve for being crazy enough to do what you do and then post it for us to watch and live it along with you. Helps is all forget the madness around us for a brief moment.

I'm so glad I found your channel! I love your videos, such a guerilla gardening-esque approach to camping. I've always thought about this, but never tried it!
Too funny Steve. I used to be in Law Enforcement for years and we used to remove the local drunks from behind the sign that welcomed you to Grande Prairie. The only reason they got discovered was that they showed their presence to the girls that cut the grass for the city and then they would call it in as a complaint. We used to tell them how to behave more stealthily next time. We’d have them move on and they we’d tell them that we would be busy for the rest of the shift so they can sneak back in.😃👍 That’s life.

I’ve realized the true appeal of Steve and his channel is realizing just how little we actually need to be happy and just having a positive attitude is 90% of it. Camping behind a sign with a sleeping bag and he’s like a kid on Christmas. Thanks Steve!

I took a mission trip to the jungles of Belize in the 80’s and it became real apparent that all I needed was a warm dry spot to sleep under a tent w/a towel to stay warm while lying in a hammock.

Hey Steve, as a military veteran I would like to recommend that you invest in a flash light that emits a red light rather than a white one. They are extremely difficult to see at night from a far distance- if not impossible.
Hard agree from an infantry vet. Definitely recommend a red/white combo headlamp.
Soldiers use red light less for people not seeing them but more because the red light doesn’t fuck up your natural night vision as much as white light
@@666LuciferNatas correct. We also have red light compatible maps that we use. It's pretty nice because a normal map tends to have red markings that'll get washed out by the red lights. Pretty cool low tech stuff honestly.
hes mentioned in a prev. vid. that hes color blind and cant see red at night so it doesnt really help him. maybe theres another option idk
Light could also have been lowered down below the height of that little wall he had rested against. That way it wouldn't have been as conspicuous from the side. Lowering it down also means the light didn't have to be as bright.
Why is the camping gear so brightly colored? So Search And Rescue teams can find your hypo-thermic corpse easier.

Great stuff I really enjoy watching your stealth camps here in the UK. I have always thought that a motorway roundabout might make a good feature, as long as there's lots of folage.
Since yesterday, I've been watching a lot of his vids. I even fell asleep watching him stealth camp in a roundabout. I started going over his video titles and just started laughing out loud because this guy tries a lot of things. I can't wait to see him post a vid stealth camping in between cars at a Ford dealership, or at a sporting goods store lol.

It's funny how years after being homeless I still see places like this sign and think "that would be a good spot." Lol
I'm not homeless...but since the pandemic...i pass these places and think to myself...i could totally sleep there safely for one night. Now, to remember these places...if I do ever need them.

Was thinking the same exact thing...
I tend to wildcamp a lot in Europe on motorcycle trips and most people seem to not care all that much about someone hunkering down for a night. The problem is when someone does actually call authorities and those show up, fines for wild camping tend to be in the €200-300 range; however more often than not you just get off with a warning.
The worst places to camp here are forests, foresters (especially if state owned) will fine you hard.
Belgium and the Netherlands also closed the last remaining legal "wild" camping spots this year which is very sad.
Autonomity it’s sad because land supposed to belong to no one... but I understand why they are so strict. People would literally live in the woods 😂
@@Mazxlol The main problem is trash/people messing too much with nature. Homeless encampments still exist (I ended up in one in Germany and another one in France, and got out fast because it was sketchy; especially the French one because it also had needles all over the place), sometimes a forest looks more cozy than it actually turns out to be..
