The first in a series of "permanent" stealth shelters placed strategically along the highway. I had a risky camping trip with a little more excitement than I was hoping for. Simple shelter setup which I will be improving on in the future. Hunkered down and had a blast as usual. Happy New Years everyone!

In the United States we have something like that called Dispersed Camping. As long as its public land, national forests, or the such, you can camp for a short time, and than cant camp within so many miles of that spot until some time has passed. This doesnt cover public land like in urban areas, but in general forests or tree cover. There are some other parts of the rules for this as well as what you can do or use and what not, but in general it would be entirely possible to legally camp your way across the country, so long as you make sure you follow all the ordinances of the specific area your in at any given time, at no cost.

If you want to avoid people seeing your lights in the woods, use red lights. It makes it a little bit harder for you to see what you're doing, but red is very difficult to see at a distance because red light is harder for the human eye to pick up on at night than white light. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a dark red/brown tarp as well.
EDIT: I forgot to mention red light also preserves your natural night vision, so your eyes won't have to re-adjust to darkness when the light is turned off.

    • @sjwarialaw8155
      @sjwarialaw8155 3 года назад +21

Yeah exactly what I was thinking, when I go on stealth camping adventures I only use red lights, so first it will reduce drastically the odds of someone seeing any light, and second I never have to go check if my space is visible from the outside due to white lights, which by itself decreases drastically the odds of someone seeing me.

For example, people with complete color blindness (meaning they can't see any colors at all) can still see, they're not completely blind, just as someone with limited color blindness like Steve has can still detect the light, but it just doesn't look red, it'll just look like a different color or grey to him.

Friendly neighborhood security guard here, I work armed security for a hospital now, but used to do contract security, which occasionally had me planted at construction sites. Unless you're actively on the job site or blocking access to it, you're unlikely to ever hear from us. As far as what authority they have, it's complicated and based on local laws and agency contracts/connections, guards can be anything from just observe and report all the way to bonded and deputized with authorities similar to a police officer. In my career I have only ran off one individual with a tent, he had erected it in front of a driveway to a facility I was posted at, I explained he was blocking the entrance and he quickly moved, that was it. Love the vids, makes me and the wife want to do some camping!

Long time bower, fist time commenter.... Love the vids mate!
I don't know if anyone has said this before. But have you ever used a bivvie bag?
I was in the army and it's like extreme camping hehe. One if the best thing they taught me was the bivvie bag. The ex military ones are cheap and more stealth/hardwearing. In UK they are around £5 used. Cammed up, goretex, so weather proof and add another 1-2 season to your sleeping bag.
I've spent plenty of years on top of mountains, burnt building and places I don't want to be seen, safe as sound in my bivvie. It's like a tent you don't have to put up.
Just make sure it's not a plastic or cheap thing and you will have it years. Also comfy inside tents/buildings as it covers face from heaters and light once you want darkness plus protects the sleeping bag.
Anyways, love the show mate. I've been to your parts many years back. Wainwright all the way to Edmonton.... Good times.
    You stay safe mate

I like how Steve tiptoes in the woods and snow so the people in their cars can't hear him walking around as they go Rolling by at 70mph.

It’s not stealth camping if you go around making noise unnecessarily. Whether the people can hear you or not.

Love that you had leftovers from home to eat! Very comforting. Your shelter is impressive.

In order to eliminate "glow-thru" from lanterns inside tarp shelters, I line mine with thick black plastic sheeting. This also gives me a dead air layer between the tarp and plastic, minimizing heat loss through the shelter wall.

    Perhaps in future...
you might do an episode called:
    "After The Stealth?"
Getting picked up, stopping to get some breakfast, etc.
    That'd be really cool, Steve!

AGREE! One of the best things about camping is the fat breakfast on the way home! Put that in Steve!

Then do a drive-by on the security guard. Asking if he heard anything suspicious last night. Say you live in the area and heard someone poking around. Lol
Get the full perspective from the guy you were crawling away from

Netflix is on the back burner at the moment. Camping with Steve and a step 2, doesn't get much better than that. Cheers from England.

Hey Steve, I love your videos! I watch them all the time. I wanted to share a trick with you for keeping sleeping matts from sliding all over. Paint a few thin lateral strips of Seam Grip (urethane tent seam sealer) along the bottom of the matt under where your body makes the most contact. The stuff is so sticky after it dries it won't slip or slide on tarps or tent fabric. Best wishes to you my friend

$..99 cent Walmart spay paint can really tone down those bright traps

When I worked security I just wanted to get through my freakin' shift. If I could ignore the benign, I did. Is Steve trespassing? He's certainly not stealing. He would be a live and let live in my book!

As you say, here you are alone. With that alone feeling and, and around 30,000 viewers along with you to feel and see what you feel. I really get into your adventure. I enjoy what is going on. So thanks for the chance to get out and camp in great outdoor

That security guard doesn't want to get out of his warm truck to mess with a dude in the woods. He is too busy watching you tube videos on his phone to actually search for intruders.

Honestly, for $11.50 per hour I would stay in the truck watching the jobsite I'm paid to watch, rather than go traipsing off into the woods after hannibal lecter for all he knows. He isn't part of scooby doo's squad looking for the bad guys lair, thats the cops gig.

Great episode. But you've gotta remember to bring an extra t-shirt or two, Steve. Cotton clothing, soaked in sweat, dew, rain or melted snow, loses 70% of its insulating value by conduction and evaporation and has caused the frostbite injury or death of too many people. Stay alive, my brother. Much love from Los Angeles CA, USA.
