    At first, i didnt really get into this, however the cast definitely grew into the roles. Would I have rather seen 4 disc super fans make funny in jokes suring the game for an hour...sure. would that be a good introduction to the game for the huge number of people outside the existing fandom? Probably not. Discworld is for EVERYONE and mostly i just wanted to see some in real life rules interaction, which i did, game looks great, if a bit different to trad ttrpg, and that suits discworld down to thr ground

      Perfectly stated!

    • @monkeyunit4533
      @monkeyunit4533 Месяц назад

      The risk of doing this with 4 super fans would be too many "inside" jokes only fans would get, or players trying to show of their extensive knowledge of the lore.
      It's probably for the best if all players have a similar lore knowledge, or those with greater knowledge don't go "correcting" everyone else.

    Excellent! I GM'd the Quickstart adventure yesterday, it was great to be able to watch this beforehand, and the game was good fun!
    My players, one who had never played any TTRPG (but was a Discworld expert) and another who hadn't played in a long, really enjoyed the utter subjectivity of justifying traits for outlandish reasons. Among other things, Detective Bartholemew Hamrahan bonded with Knobbler over the shared experience of being a zombie.
    Reading the top comment about a concern for the need to know the Discworld lore. I kind of agree, though I also think it shouldn't matter, or get in the way of a good story. There is no reason one's table version of the Discworld can't change because a player found an amazing and unexpected way to, say, take advantage of a Troll's rock nature somehow, even if it doesn't technically fit with the canon. I'll see what else is said when the Kickstarter is published, I'm looking forward to it. I also hope for new illustrations and artwork!

    One of the things that worries me about the system as presented in the quickstart guide is it feels like at the very least the GM needs an encyclopaedic knowledge of discworld. For example, in this story Abubakar pointed out he's made of rock and Quinns asked him what trait he is using, but according to the rules the fact his sheet says "troll" is the trait. The trait would also cover his strength, his relative stupidity in normal weather, his mega intelligence in cold weather, and the inability to be effected by most poisons and alcohol intended for human and so on and so on.
    If the player does not fully 100% understand every implication of what being "a troll" means on the Disc, then the GM needs to know it all. Multiply that by say 4 players who let's say are a Dwarf, Troll, Ignorina, and a zombie (as presented in the quickstart guide) and you have to know a LOT to make the game work. If I run DnD I don't need to know that dwarves are resilient to poison because it says "Dwarven resilience" on the character sheet and tells the player they are resilient to poison. In this system though it just says "Dwarf" which unless you know means "Has a tendency when drunk to run at people screaming and chop their legs off at the knee" you could never bring that into play.
    I, for my sins, do have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Discworld so I am pretty safe knowing I can run this game very well, but say in this adventure I had said to Quinns "Misbegot bridge is near the docks, correct? Well down by the docks is the pork futures warehouse, a magical environment where the temperature drops to deadly lows due to the pork futures coming into existence. Cliff goes down there and sits in the warehouse for 20 minutes to get his brain working to make him intelligent enough to deduce what happened", what would he say? Everything I've just said is true, but he either needs to just believe me or spend some time looking that up.
    I will see what the kickstarter details, but it's looking a little dicey as to how easy it will be to run this well without being a discworld geek.

    • @ClancyNacht
      @ClancyNacht 2 месяца назад +6

    • @RuptimusPrime
      @RuptimusPrime 2 месяца назад +4

      About the last paragraph - If I were GMing, with my limited knowledge of Discworld having only read like 5-6 books, I'd just say... "that may be true, but how does Cliff know that?"
      I think it's fairly easy to GM if you make sure to separate character knowledge from player knowledge. You can fairly easily manage character knowledge.

    • @OriginalBlakey
      @OriginalBlakey 2 месяца назад +1

      @@RuptimusPrime"How does cliff know that?" "How do you know that you sweat? He's a troll, he knows his own physiology my dude. As for the location of the warehouse, it's well known and the Breccia (the troll mafia) are known to meet there to give them an edge. Cliff is both a member of the troll community and a watch officer, he would know this". Again, what I have said is all completely true, how are you to know? Asking me how my troll character knows that he's smarter in the cold and where a pretty famous warehouse in the city is doesn't really bode well for the level of knowledge needed to run the game with such a simple system. If I was playing DnD would you ask me how my dwarf knows they have dwarven resilience, for example? No, of course not, because it's on the character sheet.

    • @NotTheStinkyCheese
      @NotTheStinkyCheese 2 месяца назад +2

      @@OriginalBlakey at the same time : if all trolls know this ... then surely there would be a large troll community living near said warehouse, wouldn't it ? They probably would want to live in a fridge too. Things tend to have consequences.
      In the books Detritus (sp?) and his dwarf friend (forgot his name) more or less discover this more or less by accident. It does result in the dwarf building an artifact for his friend that is literally a thinking cap.
      IMHO this is the sort of knowledge that can be ripe for abuse as it removes an obvious negative trait from a character. So both DM and player need to handle this with care. Is this really something the character actually knows or is it something for them to discover over the course of a campaign ?
      The core rules definitely do need to have a bit more info on the various (implied) skills and attributes of the various things within the Discworld setting.

    One nitpick; but Igorina looks just like a male from the Igor clan but female, while in the novels Igorina's look very beautiful with very few visible scars/stitches (and the ones they do have are designed to be stylish and attractive), because all of them have unlimited access to cosmetic surgery (Igors and Igorina's are skilled enough to only leave scars when they want to), and the "Science Hero's Babe Assistant" trope that was very common in the movies where mad scientist and the Igor archetypes came from.

      And/or in Going Postal, where Anghammarad (a very ancient golem) was a character.

    I love Discworld and this TTRPG looks great. I have downloaded the QSG and, if I can get some folk interested, may well run it. The QSG looks to be a good read anyway and has some fantastic artwork.
    The Discworld is for all and I respect that different people will feel differently about it. That wrote; I would have liked to have seen this 'playthrough' done by people who are fans rather than these guys who seem to have only a passing knowledge* of the Discworld 'universe'.
    Credit where credit is due and thanks for the effoert but fifteen minutes in and I had to stop. I'd like to report that I staopped because I wanted no 'spoilers' but I'd be lying if I did. If I reported that I did not like the host or participants - that would also be untrue. It's just sometimes, even with the best of wills, a video just does not 'gel'. It's a very personal thing - the experience will vary from person to person.
    I really hope this TTRPG does well and it is good to see that it is licensed by / from the Pterry estate.
    *Not saying that is a bad thing though and it is great that this TTRPG can be used by just about anyone and could be a grand introduction to further Discorld adventures.

      Also Pratchett himself was involved in the creation of the GURPS version. Honestly, this looks inferior. I mean, I’ll probably still get it, but only to use as a gateway for the GURPS game.

    • @nat1baby

      This only gives new potential Discworld fans a poor outline of Discworld.
      The players are really poor, giggling all the time is not what they are paid to do. They are paid to play and ACT. Yes, have fun, so laugh when it is funny. But not every 5seconds at nothing.
      Plus, that is not the Discworld atmosphere. They should have realised quickly that it is dry humour, which needs silence after jokes so they sink in.
      Even without reading much Discworld the emphasis on pun based interaction also implies this…
      Amateurs do no prep and giggle, professionals do WORK.
      None of these people are even remotely comedian level actors, which a good Discworld advert needs.

      I agree, it does feel a little weird that the official promotional content for such a beloved franchise doesn't have anyone with a solid knowledge of the subject matter further than "I liked it 20 years ago." I get that they wouldn't want it to be 100% nerding out over Disc lore, but for the GM to be asking folks off-camera for confirmation that Sybil is married to Commander Vimes, which is the main feature of every Watch book since The Fifth Elephant is kinda awkward.

    Really basic playing, DM is ok, but way too much corpsing and background chat from the players. They should stick to the voiceover work, which clearly Abu is the only one with a decent level of talent.
    Discworld is not 4 mates giggling at each other all the time…
    I hope Modiphius redo this one shot with people that take more than 5mins to learn about Discworld.
    All this video will do is lead customers to Discworld who will be totally overwhelmed by the level of intelligence behind the humour that TP writes.

    • @AnonAdderlan
      @AnonAdderlan 2 месяца назад +1

      To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Discworld. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of mythological physics most of the jokes will go over a typical reader's head. There's also Terry's humanistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Francis Petrarch literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Discworld truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Terry's existential catchphrase "I would much rather be a rising ape than a fallien angel" which itself is a cryptic reference to Krzhizhanovsky's Russian epic The Letter Killers Club. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Terry's genius wit unfolds itself on their tabletops. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
      And yes, by the way, i DO have a Terry Pratchett tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

    • @nat1baby
      @nat1baby 2 месяца назад

      @@AnonAdderlan you are exponentially correct with your comment. But I am sad you would withhold a tattoo like that from anyone outside your general IQ level, as IQ tests are often not reflective of a persons overall intellectual capability. There are modern people classed as geniuses who are renowned for having low IQ’s.
      I might have to get one of my own just so I can have a visual experience of something similar 😂👊🏼👌🏽
