@ I like that Tuscan pasta and the macaroni cheese. I agree that some are really nice but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that everything is nice. Remember it’s just a third party making it and they do mess a few up. I got a Japanese box a while back where everything was awful - especially the bang bang chicken, which was just tiny scraps of chicken in a syrup. I think a lot of their normal curries are very mediocre and often pretty bland. I also tried a couple of their marinades over the summer and one in particular was nothing like what it was supposed to be and was pretty much inedible in its intended form. I used it up in a big chilli. I can’t remember all of the bad ones but I would say at the very least many of their dishes are no better than the finest ones at Aldi and they don’t always hit the mark
They look really good, and (I paused your video so I could read the ingredients) the nice thing is that everything is 'natural' (ok might be a concentrate of, or dried) but no 'sulphites' or the like. And because of that, I don't mind paying a bit more for something like this. Unlike paying an extortionate amount just because it's got some 'over important' chefs name on it! lol So I'm deffo gonna try these, so thanks for the review! All the very best wishes to your family for the New Year. Hope it's a good one for you all.
These are just the traditional Bombay potatoes but the name "Gunpowder" potatoes has been coined by the Indian restaurant Dishoom. The name is also somewhat popular amongst those in India who don't like the british name of bombay. I even saw "Gunpowder potatoes" on the menu in a restaurant in Mumbai back in April.
I do like some potatoes with my curry, and I have made this myself, as a minced filling for croissants -- the buttery croissant dough goes well with the spicy potatoes. A heavenly combination.
Basically very similar to Bombay Potatoes. I'm sure I've seen Gunpowder seasoning in store 🤔🤔. It is an M+S item, so the quality is going to be good. When my neighbour visits for an Indian, I push the boat out a bit. Apart from my homemade curry I also have Bombay potatoes, Saag Aloo, Gobi Aloo, Onion Bhajis, a decent Naan bread , a selection of chutneys and obviously Basmati rice. He's a real curry head. He even has curry for Christmas Dinner. 😏😏. So I might have to get some Gunpowder potatoes for him to try. The price was maybe a bit high for a small portion of spuds and spices. But as one off taster? Not exactly bank breaking. I'd certainly give a try, but I do love my Bombay potatoes, so for me to change up? They really need to stand out. Another great review 👍👍. A Happy New Year to you and your family and all the Baldie Food lovers out there. 🎆🎆2025🎆🎆.
Oh wow they look great. The usual nutrition information gets a double thumbs up . They're totally versatile too you can have them as a side for so many things - doesn't have to be Indian.. Gonna be keeping an eye out for these in my M&S as they look like they're worth the price. HAPPY NEW YEAR, Gary.
My comment vanished! I’ll try again lol! Those potatoes sound great , I haven’t had anything from M&S for a long time , I would love those! I love Indian food too! Happy New Year to you and your family x
The M and S always have that rustic looking sleeve when the price is a bit higher 😂. We use Waitrose ( approximately once amonth ) because Ocado doesn’t deliver to our area. It’s too remote 🤷♀️. I mean we’re not falling off the edge of the planet. 🙄. Anyway, I think Marks is better than Waitrose for variety. It did smell good Gareth. 😂 As I’m not working tomorrow, I’m doing lamb and lentil curry…..goooooorgeeeooous. Have a fab New Year’s Eve.
They look terrific Gareth and I can imagine taste great judging by the amount of "hmms" you gave. M&S are hands down the leaders for Indian ready made dishes and sides. They must have some brilliant Indian chefs in their development kitchens. So authentic. Great review 👍👍
This is M7S food! Expect to pay twice or three times the going rate. 250gms of potatoes with spices. A Kg of potatoes costs a £1, my those spices and packaging costs a fortune. Will I buy them? Not in a month of Sundays!
It’s funny you say that though as there were TikTok videos going around all last year talking about how M&S is just as cheap if not cheaper than Aldi etc, with people commenting that they’ve saved money by shopping there. I don’t think it’s a sign that M&S is actually cheaper though - more a sign than a lot of users on TikTok are off their t*ts
I make my own to go with curries and rice. A couple of cooked potatoes with an onion and chopped tomatoes and spices. Those look nice but a lot of £s for the portion size.
Briliant Gaz.. top review mate. It's a good thing there isn't a Waitrose near you, or you'd be bankrupt in a week😂.. although Booths come a very close second..? Happy new year to you too.. 🏴👍
Those potatoes look a bit tasty so if M and S isn't full of old folk I will get some also have a very happy new year for you and your family when it comes.
great video as always gareth, happy new year to you aswell, not sure if you seen it but wherever you got these from in M&S there should have been a beef vindaloo nearby in similar packaging which i had this week from my local M&S, which was also mouthwatering delicious, next time your in you might want to give it a shot, from my experience it wont disappoint, one of the best beef currys ive had.
Oh Gareth, they sound amazing! I know I would enjoy them as I also love Indian food. I haven’t bought from M&S for a long time, I think I will in the near future hopefully! Happy New year to you and your lovely family x
Happy New Year! Yea, pretty good on the ingredientside... you enjoyed them. M&S never seem to dissapoint, but at a price. I reccon you COULD make them if you had a good recipe and all the spices required. But, yes, easy fix. Get these down with a nice prawn madras and rice :)
My dad's been really sick the last week. Taking care of him all alone. It's awful as he's always been so strong. Thanks for cheering me up with your videos :)
Price is astronomical. In Home Bargains I can buy 7.5 Kg of potatoes for £3.99. Spices are not expensive. However, I am sure that the M&S taste very good. Happy New Year to you and yours.
I'd really appreciate more M&S reviews if possible Gareth. I do my mum's shop via Ocado and any ideas greatly appreciated. Microwave if possible for the ease for her carers.
I appreciate M&S quality is usually pretty good, that’s pretty dear for a tiny portion of potatoes as a side dish. You can get those really nice curries (minus rice) at Aldi for that. If you can afford it though, why not.
❤ looks nice would be good with chicken and veg, hope you are going to sleep tonight with the sleeve not coming off properly, all the best to you and yours xx
Expensive but we expect that from M&S. Great quality. Confusing reference to starving children at the end, presumably a dig at Blackburn. Thanks Gaz for another good year of reviews.
Great review Gaz and so overpriced for what you get I bet you could make it yourself because you have the list of ingredients and boil £0.50 worth of spuds and hay presto you have it never do yourself down 👍👍
As someone said theynateca side dish but if you got the whole meal from M&S it would be expensive. On the other hand the prices of side dishes from the takeaway is getting ridiculous. As you say Gareth you pay for quality and as a treat why not. Happy New Year to you and yours. 2025 here we come.👍.
Hello Gareth, think we all agree that M&S portions tend to be on the smaller size. Unlike the prices. Sadly quality costs. Naturally homemade would be so much cheaper. At that price for Gunpowder potatoes, i couldn't give two Fawkes. 🙂
@@DameTremonti Good one 😂
😅😅😅
Your loss lol
Do you never get an Indian takeaway or eat at an Indian restaurant FFS?
Ive got some gunpowder seasoning in a sachet from Aldi - save yourself a small fortune 👍🏼
It's worth a try 👍
Is it any good ?
Everything from M&s is nice, it's the top dog.
Yes
Not *everything* in my experience. I have had some pretty duff ready meals
@@PotatoPirate123 Like what, i've never had a bad ready meal. All the pastas are nice.
@ I like that Tuscan pasta and the macaroni cheese. I agree that some are really nice but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that everything is nice. Great videos as always. Happy New Year to you and your family. Thank you for the reviews and laughter 😁
Happy new year!
Spuds and curry . Heaven….🎉🎉🎉

Gunpowder Potatoes.
What a banging 🧨 way to start the New Year with.
Gave a good one Gareth and family. Cheers
Happy new year!

Amazing good info 👌
A South Indian spice mix 'Molaga Podi', 'Milagai Podi' or 'Gunpowder Masala', a combination of chilli, chaat masala and other spices.
Bizarre. The Portuguese gave it the name Bombay. 'Bom' is Portuguese for good. The British just carried on using the name.
Contrary to popular belief, Potato naming does not revolve around London restaurants
@@GEODUCK9 no one said that though, do they. It's been popularized, definitely. And as mentioned, you can see Gunpowder potatoes on the menu in India.
Thanks Gareth, they looked yummy! what’s not to like in potatoes with a few Indian spices. Happy New Year to you and keep up the great reviews.
Happy new year!
I do like some potatoes with my curry, and I have made this myself, as a minced filling for croissants -- the buttery croissant dough goes well with the spicy potatoes. A heavenly combination.
“I’ve tret myself” 😂 Wishing you and family a happy new year Gaz when it gets
here 👍💕
That tickled me too! I was thinking our friends in other countries would probably not know know what that meant!
thought he said he'd shit himself.
Happy new year!
@ Thanks Gaz 👍
am sure M&S used to sell "gunpowder chilli paste" - not sure if they still do
aldi used to sell these . wish they would bring them back
They do look tasty but as I'm over thirty miles away from my nearest M&S I won't be trying them anytime soon. Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
