What Happened to F1 In India? - Ft.

  • Formula 1 raced in India from 2011 until 2013. India is home to some incredible tourist attractions, massive cricket fans, and has the most tigers in a single country. Formula 1 is missed by many Indian F1 fans, who are of the opinion that the Indian Grand Prix simply wasn't around for long enough when it had such huge potential. Part of why Formula 1 no longer races in India was due to a tax dispute with the local government deeming Formula 1 not a sport, but entertainment, meaning the tax on the event skyrocketed. The Indian Grand Prix was not subsidised by the government meaning it was up to the Buddh International Circuit and the organisers, to fund the entire thing. As you will find out in this video, it was simply too much..
    Enjoy.

    For those asking!
The original video I made over a year ago contained some photos which I had to blur out for copyright reasons. The quality of my content has come a long way since then too and I have had many people ask me to re upload it. So here is the re mastered version without blurred out sections which had a lot of people frustrated 😅

As an Indian and practical neighbour to the Buddh International Circuit it pains me to see what politics and greed for money has done to F1's prospects in India.
Nevertheless, apart from the Govt. not backing the event, there is also a lack of knowledge and information in India about F1, of course avid viewers will watch the races by any means necessary or get updates but it is the new audiences which suffer a bit.
No broadcasting for the races on TV, not many news channels cover F1 and I think there are very few or negligible Indian F1 content creators out there.

Well made video! Of course, it pains the multitude of F1 fans in India that we missed an opportunity to host F1 races. On one hand, I think it's correct for the government not to subsidize these things as at the end of the day an F1 race should not be funded from the tax payers' pockets. On the other hand, Indian taxation policies make it incredibly difficult for foreign businesses to operate. Hopefully, new government policies will help ease the financial operability in the future. We also need more grassroots racing. Cricket is popular because it's accessible and realistic to succeed in. F1 is so far above the point of accessibility for most that it feels out of sync with reality. Indians love their automobiles. We need F3 and F2 races here on a regular basis and we need to build motorsport teams here competing at that level. We need a street race in the south for something like Formula E. We need motorsport academies for young drivers. We need a touring car championship for manufacturers here. Without building the foundations, F1 will be a castle in the sky. If even a middle class, urban Indian cannot aspire to be a race driver, what's the point??

F1's present dependence upon the Arabian peninsula because of 💰💰💰 is relatively unsustainable; sooner or...sooner they will have to go where the fans are. That means India would have to be high on the list. They should not require subsidy from local governments to do it, either; the amount of sponsorship potential in a rising India with dozens of multinational/aspiring multi- banks and corps is massive.
If FIA *doesn't* have plans laid to return to India in the next 3 years, in fact; they're making a huge mistake.

Social Media here in India has grown significantly in the past decade and I can surely say tens of millions of people in India follow Formula 1 regularly. Its just the mentality of the UP government and their lack of interest for the sport. India is a country where if people like something the government will milk it as long as it can and put everything aside. Like Cricket. A lot of people love cricket and the government is just milking it. A new government away from the dumb and kinda racist current UP government would be really good for not just the sport but also for the state.

I think F1 will be sooner back to India. Very sooner. High chances are there. First the country didn't have any regional formula series where SL points were given. And 4-5 yrs back there were less F1 fans. But now there are a lot of F1 fans and those series like Formula Regional India and Formula 4 India could be a game changer to identify and produce a good motorsport talent like their current F2 driver Jehan Daruvala, DTM podium finisher Arjun Maini. And really it isn't the India when F1 visited in 2011-2013. Clearly Fans understand a lot about racing. Only thing is that Buddh is a bit crap. Problem apart from the taxation is that Buddh's land revenues/taxes weren't paid (I read it somewhere in a motorsport newsletter). Because of which according to Indian Constitution that land will be sealed by the govt. Apart from these the problem is that this case has been moved towards court as tickets for F1 Indian GP were sold less than the actual rate which isn't fair and a case in India moved to the supreme court means that almost years will be spent to even close that case that is like a age longer. And therefore I will say the entire Buddh is a collapse. The only they can do is fire Jaypee Motorsport and acquire that area and track under a national motorsport organization which is currently formed. Or since this track is present in Uttar Pradesh (a state in India) and elections are coming up might be after the elections they might worry about it. Clearly Cricket is becoming more boring in India (As cricket is really boring with the same team no thrillingness like Motorsport and also very frequent matches which by itself is very boring). And more people are turning towards Football, racing series like F1, Formula 2, Formula 3, Endurance racing, Indy car, Formula E etc.. Also F1 might work once again in India if there is a team like Mahindra in FE and similarily opening up a team in F1 in partnership with Mumbai Falcons, Racing team India (LMP2) as a junior team, they might advertise and probably bring back F1 to India. What currently is required is an attention. Most of them love F1 in India. I hope some miracle happens and F1 comes back to India. I really like that circuit layout. Hope F1 comes back to India in 2023.
Or lets throw out Buddh. Currently a new track is coming up (Grade 2) (Nanoli speedway) and probably if they develop that track to a grade 1 (just like Kari speedway from grade 3 to grade 2) both Formula 2 and Formula 1 can race in that track. And what would be a perfect weekend for the F1 fans out there.
And one more grade 2 track is under construction. It is Marque motor club in Andhra Pradesh. And one more which is in Coimbatore (Karthikeyan's home town) is also coming up but still is only a grade 2 track. But they can develop it to a grade 1 in near future. (They are also in collaboration with Mumbai Falcons racing under CoASTT projects)
Hope all these turn into good future for racing in India.
Also I would say Buddh is a bit poor positioned track. The motor hub for India is only to the south. So who knows Buddh would've been better if it was placed somewhere south of the country. But not to lie, its truly a nice track.

    • @SARTHAXBEATZ

India's social media boom of 2016 and the huge audience of Drive to Survive will reflect in a massive increase in attendance. As for the fans, we are still hopeful as the JayPee group is in process of acquiring the track and should result in the Indian GP being back on the calendar ❤️

Another few things to keep in mind though; India is a VERY BIG country; New Delhi is in the north of India, so the track is not cheaply accessible to the people in the south; generally involves $150-300 in travel costs in addition to the ticket costs.
Secondly Uttar Pradesh is a very high risk state, ruled by a hardcore right wing party and F1 will have a lot of security risks there; e.g. if the right wing mobs get offended by anything they go on a destructive rampage. If F1 were to come back, it would be better to relocate to south India, more secure, more open to business and has historically been the centre of motorsports in India.

This circuit really put India on the global map as far as motor racing is concerned. Not sure if the more recent FIA requirements made it cost prohibitive to continue to host F1 there but would be nice to see the cars back on the grid and bring fans from around the world - sucks though that part of their ambition to host international motor racing events have been dogged by COVID-19 and the restrictions that have come with that. Hoping for us to reach full normalcy until this pandemic is no longer a pandemic and we can enjoy the action again 🤞🏼

Oh what a beautiful track. I wish it also held two wheels races such as MotoGP and WSBK
