  • At first thought, Porsche racing in F1 makes a lot of sense. And yet, it's never happened. So, why doesn't Porsche race in Formula One?

      Yes Porche doesent need to join F1, because Porche cars dont really go that fast, because they really aint supercars, when their between supercar and regular car, but Lamborghini could join F1, because their cars are supercars, so Lamborghini knows how to make fast cars and so it would be funny to see Lamborghini compete against Ferrari as top team in F1. Proving to Ferrari, that they make better cars.

      But that saying is true about porsche. I've done an internship there and.... the simple mechanics already are on a level where other companies use engineers. And the engineers are at places I couldn't even access. Porsche is an engineering company first, car manufacturer second. Just like tesla is a tech company first and car manufacturer second.

      @Jou t7 I don't where your mind is going, but the gt3/gt2 rs, the gt4 rs and the normal 911 gt3 are all bona-fide supercars. Yes they don't have the look of an aventador or a 488 pista, but that is intentional. The designs are supposed to be timeless, where you can look back in 60 years and say "what a beauty". You can't say that about today's ferraris, they look more mundane and like a generic sportscar.

I guess the desire comes from trying new formulas with their fans without THE ONE overshadowing any potential success the 911 consistently eats away from others. To be frank it's a luxury problem that many companies would like to have, although I kinda get the frustration. If you want to make something new and revolutionize and most of your fanbase asks for evolution you're kinda glued to the seat you got seated in.
      On the other hand I think you can safely say to work on such a long legacy series of cars with that much success to show is quite an honor as well. I wonder which parts of Porsche's workforce feel about 911's steady demand with some level of remorse and which ones don't feel that remorse. I doubt everyone has the same opinion.

      It’s ok now, but doesn’t really stand out from the rest of the F1 pundit crowd, which seems to be getting denser by the minute the more Liberty pushes into the US.
      I feel like moving away from the light yellow pastel into something more generic and mass-market does your brand a disservice.
      It’s incredibly difficult to build a RUclips following, let along one that stands out, and having the pastels gives you something unique that’s easily recognizable. I see the yellow and go “hell yeah a John W vid.”
      I understand some people’s criticism in the context of the F1 audience, but it doesn’t track for your growth goals. Changing only cedes your ability to stand out from a crowded room.
      My suggestion would be to create a colour palate with the same warm tone and range as your yellow so that you have variety, but keeps your brand consistent and distinct from all the other F1 RUclipsrs/commenters.

I think they should do it just for the fun and sport of it, they’ve got the money that’s for certain. And it might not help them sell more cars , but I think / believe the short amount of time it would take for Porsche to enter its first F-1 season and then to stand on top of the center podium wouldn’t take very long at all. And to be able to watch Porsche enter into F-1 stand on the center top podium and take the constructor’s championship wouldn’t take maybe two seasons at best. The bragging rights alone would be worth every penny , and I do believe that it would also increase Porsches car sells .I know it will never happen but I’d sure love to see it.

    Porsche reminds me of Michelin when they were offered to make tires for F1 and refused because they didn't want to build tires that WOULDNT last long. They wanted technology that could transfer over to road cars and F1 would pretty much just be a PR move/flex, one that they didn't need because of all the other forms of racing they get involved in and their good reputation for everyday use by consumers.
    Porsche is kinda at the same point with F1, and I think it speaks great volume about the role and place of F1.
    F1 seems less and less relevant to our period and our society needs, there are already categories for those new applications (Formula E, WEC, GT3, Dakar...), no shoes for them to fill in. F1 is bound to become completely irrelevant and a pure "Show Sport". I think Liberty Media understand this and that kinda explains all the different decision they've made since they came in.

    I've always been a big fan of Porsche's front engined cars in the 80's and 90's. Then when I visited my uncle in Santa Barbra California and rode in his 911 SC targa, I was completely smitten. The flat 6 sound is absolutely glorious. I once owned a 1976 914/4 back in the 90's. I completely agree with the points made here. Thank you.

I mean I can see Maro Engel literally avoiding giant WET patches on the racing line. I’m sure if the AMG One is given the chance to run again, it can pull out an even better gap than 8 seconds, maybe even 20+. But in the end, I give my applause to both manufacturers, they’ve made truly bonkers automobiles in their respective price points

Porsche’s head chassis engineer (I think) drove the Zeta around the Nurburgring once and told Chevy it will never handle like a true sports car, so they hired him and he developed the Alpha platform that’s now regarded as one the most well balanced handling platforms ever.

      Lamborghini was never interested in racing, saying even that it was a waste of time and money. It’s only in present day after his death that Lamborghini is going racing, and they would still never race in F1. Most of Lamborghini’s greatest innovations happen OUTSIDE of racing, not inside of it. Same with Koenigsegg. Pagani (which u called Zonda for some reason) was never worried abt racing similarly to Lamborghini. He just wanted to create a car that was better and more extreme than anything Lamborghini could create, and he did. Also, Koenigsegg makes cars that surpass some of the technologies of F1 cars, such as their Freevalve technology in the Gemera (which I’m surprised hasn’t found its was into F1 with all of the performance potential it could bring to the engine), their light speed transmission in the Jesko and the CC850 (which subsequently enabled them to put an automatic manual transmission on a car with the aforementioned CC850), and their direct drive technology in the Regera. This makes them similar to Porsche in that they’re a team of engineers who happen to make cars. They don’t need F1. Lamborghini is also largely a team of engineers, pushing the boundaries of automotive technology. Their supercapacitor hybrid system, their ALA system, their Forged Composites material and their smart materials system implemented in the Sian should be proof of that. Pagani doesn’t engineer much, but are instead focused on making beautiful yet brutal works of art on wheels, so they would have no need for F1 either. Therefore, none of the companies u have mentioned would have any need or desire to be in F1

    Your video is not correct, Porsche really wanted to race in F1, and they would have, with a mostly badged engine. It was Redd Bull that turned them down. Further more like you said in the beginning it would make sense for Porsche to stand out in the hybrid era of enginering, that was the reason VW/Porsche wants to join F1. So thats where your F1 story falls apart.
    I’m not saying Porsche could not eventually win in F1, but if they would start an F1 team purely on their own they would 100% be fighting not to finish last for at least the first 3 years. Thats why Porsche isn’t in F1 , they only wanted to join if they could take over an already existing F1 team and be competitive from year1.
    But the rest of your video was good & very enjoyable.

    I don't see the V6 vs flat-6 being a problem for Porsche. They were involved in committee that helped draft the 2026 power unit regulations (as were Audi, no wonder the power outputs of the ICE and MGUK are similar to mid 2010s LMP1). The flat-6 is also terrible for an open wheel car with large venturi tunnels, and is not the best as a structural part of the chassis.
    The 963 to the LMDh rules is a twin turbo V8, and the 919 had a turbo V4.
    Only 19.5% of their sales are flat-6s. 911s represent less than 13% of sales, while SUVs account for nearly 57%.
    Only the Panamera and Boxster/Cayman sold less.

    Mercedes 500E was not engineered *fully* by Porsche, the only thing Porsche did to engineer the car was figuring out how to put Mercedes' new V8--which had debuted in the 500 SL--into a compact sedan because Mercedes engineers didn't have time to figure out how to fit a chonker of an engine into a car designed for fuel crisis engines when they had other matters relating to the S-Class. After the redesign of the W124, a problem arose because the 500E now was too fat and wide to fit down a Mercedes production line so Porsche had to take responsibility for assembling the car in what used to be the Porsche 959 factory. But other than the changes needed to fit a new engine in and the assembly, Mercedes had full control of the W124's development
    Also, fun fact, the RS2 Wagon was being built in the same factory for a short period, so in that time you could watch as Audis and Benzes rolled out of the same Porsche factory.
    EDIT: Oh and the reason why Porsche has lend hands with other companies so much is because Porsche is also an engineering consulting company so some companies just let Porsche do some of the work just so they can focus on other projects. Whether that's a dub or not is up to you.

    Thats not entirely true though is it?
    1. Yes, the Porsche 919 is a great car & beat F1's record around Spa (for less than a year until the next F1 race took place) but as you said it was made without any rules, whereas F1 cars have rules they need to follow, pretty sure that most F1 teams could make a faster car if they had no rulebook to follow.
    2. Porsche have tried to enter F1 numerous times, most recently last year, when they wanted to pretty much buy RB now but RB only wanted a partner not to sell...
    3. You're saying Porsche doesnt need to sell any more cars but I dont think there's a car brand out there with less of a need for more car orders than Ferrari and yet they're the most legendary F1 team.
    All in all, I believe there's an actual reason why they're not joining F1 and it's because F1 is so unpredictable and so competitive. A brand could invest millions upon millions and see no difference on their results or wait years until they do (see Honda, Toyota, Renault since 2006, even Mercedes needed 3-4 years until they became dominant). This would hurt their image too much and if theres no choice of buying an already established team (like what they tried with RB) then there's no reason to enter at all.

    Actually, Porsche tried to go into F1 but they didn’t want to start from scratch and nobody wanted to sell their team. F1 is still the reigning category and whoever dominates gets to sit on top of the motorsport’s world, that´s why Red Bull and Aston Martin got in, and Mercedes, Ferrari. McLaren, Williams, etc, don´t leave.

    Enjoyed the video but I think a comparison must be drawn to Ferrari. They both have had similar commitments to sportscar racing in the past 20 years (minus Ferraris omission from the LMP1 category), both have sufficient demand for there cars, I mean Ferrari choose there clientele, and both have large customer racing programs. Yet Ferrari choses to compete in F1 still to this day? This granted, is due to Ferraris long history in the sport, but as well as this it sells Ferrari as a brand. This is what I believe Porsche are wanting to achieve in F1, as much as they have a rich history in sports car racing its popularity pales in comparison to that of F1. Porsche would show they can win on all fronts of motorsport which has been a status reserved for a select few.

      If you think f1 is more popular then gt racing your very much mistaken 😂 f1 just now started becoming a fan sport or did you forget that it basically use to be a very private an enclosed Motorsport only the rich could really watch, an if you really believe that people see Ferrari in f1 an go “I wanna buy a Ferrari now” then your lost 💀 considering the fact that f1 cars an sorts cars have almost 0 similarities an also Porsche doesn’t go to f1 because they can’t they don’t because they don’t care to, why go somewhere else when they’re the kings of the gt racing world 🤷🏽‍♂️ they’ve built most of the greatest race cars ever an it isn’t even close, especially when there’s about to be a new golden age in gt racing, f1 just isn’t important to them

    • @mattsparksy

      @@Gabethemosthated F1 is objectively more popular than GT racing, the only time GT was ever close was Group C. Its not about advertising directly for Ferrari its about setting an identity for there brand. Porsche did the same thing with the World Sportscar Championship. There is no doubt that Porsche are one of, if not the most successful sportscar manufacturer of all time, but if you cared to watch any sportscar racing you'd see that prior to Hyper car it struggled with viewership at the best of times. Sportscar racing will never have the same viewership as F1, its fundamentally less mainstream with 24hr races and confusing classes. Porsche understand this hence there desire to show that they can compete in the mainstream intern selling there brand. Its not about the very small proportion of people that can buy the cars its about selling the brand, and Porsche know in a world of influencers F1 is probably the place to do that.

    • @Gabethemosthated
      @Gabethemosthated Год назад +1

      @@mattsparksy your right, gt racing is more for the hardcore Motorsports fans, which is why it has about 50% less viewership then f1, but it’s kinda hard to get an exact estimate with all the catagorys an classes, but more of the casuals tune in to f1 because it’s simpler to understand but the hardcore Motorsport fans both watch f1 an gt even tho if I’m being honest f1 has become boring throughout the years while gt racing is becoming more an more popular with some saying a new golden era that hasn’t happens since group c an gt1 in the 90s but even if you don’t watch gt racing even the most casual of fans know that Porsche rules the racing world, even tho they aren’t in f1 but like the video explained they don’t need to be they dominate gt racing an wouldn’t really gain anything from f1

    • @mattsparksy
      @mattsparksy Год назад

      @@Gabethemosthated I agree with you in regards to sportscar racings new golden era. I'm very excited to see this and the racing is absolutely better but people won't give it the time of day because it's very hard to get into. Committing to long races and hard to understand rule sets is a high barrier to entry. As for Porsche ruling the Motorsport world, in terms of sportscars there's an argument to be had. But outside of that they don't really compete. The only negative on sportscars from F1 is poaching it's manufactures, Audi who had a car 2 weeks away from testing and Aston Martin who literally had a car ready to go.

    There is another reason you forget to mention for Porsche not wanting to enter F1 anytime soon: they could fail. In this case not only there would be no benefit for them to enter F1, but it could even prove harmfull for the brand

    Can i say it broke the lap record for Hamilton's 2017 f1 car only for the w11 to put it in it's place and bare in mind the 919 tribute is a car without limits both of Hamilton's cars had limits and yet still the w11 has the track record

      Porsche doesn't need to be the fastest per lap to have a better car that lasts a hundred times longer than mercedes

    • @Alan-ww8vi
      @Alan-ww8vi Год назад +2

      Although the 919 Evo doesn't fit into any regulation, it still carried some limitations from the base LMP1. Also, if I recall correctly, the driver had less than 10 laps practice. Hardly enough time to learn a car that's about 20 seconds faster than what he normally drives - which he openly said he was the limiting factor. There's at least a few seconds in there.

    • @Alan-ww8vi
      @Alan-ww8vi Год назад +3

      @paper plane No, a F1 car is not miles quicker on a track without long straights. Like I said, even while they had those features, they still carried over some limitations from the base LMP1 car. Some of those limits restricted their cornering speeds.
      Only a F1 snob with no knowledge of motorsports will fail to recognise this.

    • @Alan-ww8vi
      @Alan-ww8vi Год назад +1

      @paper plane I didn't address those of an F1 car because I was merely pointing out that the Porsche was not limitless in the strictest sense, like most people like to claim it is.
      Of course a F1 snob has to chime in and make it about F1. Since you want to compare it to a F1, those limitations on the 919 Evo are significant if you really want to compare them together.

    0:07 I don't believe that's the case anymore. It set the lap record at the time, beating Vettel's 2019 lap but 2020 Hamilton pole lap holds the record so F1 is still faster today
