Fujifilm X Series Point and Shoots: Is the Latest the Greatest?

  • I know there are a plethora of videos on the latest Fujifilm X100 series camera, so I won't bore you with another typical review. What I will do is talk about my history with the X100 series since I've reviewed every version since 2011. Since I've reviewed every Fujifilm X Series and GFX series camera, I will do my best to give some context to the longevity of the X100 series, and why all the other compact point-and-shoots from Fujifilm have been discontinued. I believe an entry-level X100 would sell well in today's market, as would the re-introduction of the X70 and X30 cameras. People are point-and-shoot crazy once again, and if Fujifilm won't build more, the competition will do it for them. Ricoh already has four versions of the GRIII, and a brand like Nikon could easily bring back an updated Coolpix A. What are your thoughts on the future of compact all-in-one digital cameras?

    I so badly wish they would put the X-Pro3 screen on the x100. People are literally crazy to think that the screen was bad. It's so awesome. The perfect screen for a photo camera. I love that strap you have on the X-Pro3! So cool.

    • @bigheadtaco

      Hey buddy. Long time no see :-) I think many criticized the X-Pro3 screen without actually playing with it. I love throwing it in my camera bag and not worry about scratching the LCD screen. As for the strap, it’s the Wotancraft Parashooter :-)

      Yeah, I remember selling my V to get the the 3.
      I think the ‘true photography retro’ marketing maybe gave peoppe the wrong impression. I just love that I can when I turn the camera on the viewfinder is already ready and I don’t have to wait for the eye sensor, and when I *do* want to use the LCD (which I’ve always only used for low angle shots and nothing else) it’s faster to pull oit than on literally any other single camera.
      The X-Pro3 is such a great camera. Just about *perfect* for event photography.

      Me too! I wish my X100V had the back screen of the X-Pro3. I don't need 40 mp instead i want more dynamic range.

      I agree! I'd love a simpler X100VI with the 26MP sensor and no OVF but all the other modern features like the new processor and IBIS, that would be perfect.

    Take,
    We have heard from just about every reviewer and anecdotal opinion that there is not a major jump between X-Trans 4 and 5. I can see the point.
    However, my take is that it is more of a testament on how good the x100V and the X-Trans 4 sensors and lenses are vs. shortcomings of the x-trans5. I think an x80 with the x-S20 sensor and the x100V lens or an 18 F2 would be absolutely a smash hit.
    Love the videos and keep them coming

    That's the best analysis of Fuji / other compact point and shoots of recent times that I've seen. Your collection and knowledge are mind blowing! I too love the X70 but on mine I found its low light performance a bit hit and miss at times - probably more me than the camera though! Thanks.

    Two observations: First - no mention of the X-E series; I love my X-E3, combined with the XF 27mm it's great but it can also take any of my other XF lenses so makes a really nice compact system. Second - I saw a Billingham 50 Years belt loop flash by and you didn't even give that a mention; come on man, Billingham is camera bag royalty!
    Love your enthusiasm

      I love the X-E3. Need one for the collection. Although the X-E4 sold out (mostly as an alternative to the sold out X100V) I want to see more control features to return. Thanks for your thoughts. And yes, bag royalty. I should have mentioned it. It was a mixture of various brands including a WESN multi-tool 😂😂😂

    @10:00 The camera technically exists. It's the X-E4. Unfortunately Fuji forgot to accompany that with a 18mm pancake OIS lens.

      Very true, but I don’t want it interchangeable lens, I think a fixed 18mm with a leaf-shutter would be better as it would be even smaller :-)

    I would love additional x100 models with a 50 f/2 and something like a 16 or 18 f/2, close focusing. My dream would be a 30 or 60 2.8 macro. Made in Japan. I might buy every model if they did that.
    I really, really hope the x-pro4 doesn't have the flip-down screen. I wanted an x-pro 3 so bad. And the worse thing about that flip-down screen is the fact that it made the x-pro2 prices jump up. That's how I ended up choosing a 100v. An x-pro3 with a screen like the 100v/vi would be perfect, i don't need to be forced to use a camera's feature. An off switchomon the screen would do the job better. And the screen display mode can already be changed to not show an image, with much more useful information than just film sim.
    Thanks for a great video and insight into some camera history! Would love an x70 successor. the 100 series isn't very pocketable, the sooner it is freed from that idea, the sooner it can really grow.

    Fuji moving away from the D-Pad, for me, is their most frustrating design choice. Even worse than the film simulation dial. It has stopped me upgrading from my beloved xt-20. I never use the joystick on my xt3,.Once you have the touch screen it kinda becomes redundant. What frustrates me the most is that it went with a whimper. Nobody seemed to care that much that it was being taken away so I guess I'm in a minority here...

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 месяца назад

      The D-Pad still exists on certain cameras, but removed on others. I understand their reasoning, but I don’t agree with their decision…

      @@bigheadtaco A camera that is specifically designed to do just that: point and shoot. The models you are showing are fully featured, have full manual controls and are aimed at the enthusiast photographer who is looking to explore those capabilities. These days, smartphones are about the closest you can get to a point-and-shoot.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 месяца назад

      @@c0ldc0ne we can agree to disagree. Just because a point and shoot also has some manual controls doesn’t make it not a point and shoot. The category of ‘point-and-shoot’ isn’t governed by ISO, it was a marketing term coined by camera manufacturers to help people decide what type of camera was best for them.

    • @c0ldc0ne
      @c0ldc0ne 3 месяца назад

      @@bigheadtaco These cameras do not have "some manual controls" but offer the same, or an even higher level of control and flexibility compared to other models. If that still classifies them as point-and-shoots, then the moniker is entirely meaningless and could even include your Leica M. Besides, when was the X100 series ever marketed by Fuji as a point-and-shoot?
