I also like to note before the firmware updates of 3.0 and 4.0 for the XH2, AFC was good for my use case in this portrait video I did.
It was the XH2 + 35MM F1.4 R (The old 35mm, which is kinda crazy thinking about it now lol)

I think it was perfectly usable before, as good as the rest no way! but still very usable. I havent undated to version 6 on the xh2s and I wont, I always wait to see what people say. Fuji as brand has always had these false positives to the pint you could put it down to user error but from what I have seen of this version 6 nah I wouldn't touch it. Great pictures and subscribed

Thanks Lee. Perhaps you can inform Fuji representatives about the problem. I, like many users of the system (I have been using the Fuji X system for 7 years), have serious problems with autofocus in my X-H2s. In general, it’s strange to experience 50% focus misses in a flagship camera with a fast stack sensor in 2024. This is very sad and I can’t rely on my camera. Thanks again for bringing up this issue. I love your photos and always enjoy watching your videos. All the Best

Honestly this happened back in 3.0 on the XH2s. It went from slow but accurate to essentially useless. My hit rate was higher manual focusing my GFX than it was shooting with eye detection on the XH2s.
I miss the colours all the time but this is my job and I got tired of having to cull 2/3 of the images from my client projects.
I’m currently considering buying a GFX 100s and not the GFX 100s II because I don’t want anything that’s getting these new tracking updates.
    Slow is fine. Inaccurate isn’t.

Ah I haven't noticed the issue stemmed back from 3.0! I started to notice issues with 4.0 on my XH2 and XT5.
I have pre-ordered the GFX 100sii. I will definitely do extensive testing with it and see if the problem persists.

    • @bytomw

Yeah, it was a massive AF tracking improvement they rolled out. I spoke to Fujfilm directly about it and they confirmed it was a known issue and they were working on it. Sent over screen recordings and 100s of raw files from sessions and didn’t hear anything after that.
Frankly I gave up when the X100VI had the exact same issues despite boasting a new “ai tracking system”.
I miss my Fujis, but I also couldn’t rely on them from that stage. In the video you said it’s on us to guarantee results and that’s 100% true. For me that meant not using them cameras for work and choosing a tool I could rely on for work.
Super interested to hear your thoughts on the Panasonic, I’m eyeing up an S5IIX right now, I love the idea of in camera LUTs on JPEGs

@@bytomw I think they considered the case closed by 5.3 it sorted most of my problems out and fault positives in single point have gone. And the AF-c eye detect I think we just need to get used to the fact this may never improve for this generation of cameras face decoct though is actually usable. The biggest problem that now persists at 5.3 (im not upgrading to that crappy version 6) is the distance. As your subject move close to camera through the burst the camera losses focus completely, but think its in focus and this is evident when you go beyond the cameras min focus distance the camera thinks its still infocus. and I think this is what version 6 was trying to sort out and failed. I think the tech is fine its the coding.

Neither is fine. Plain and simple. I spent a lot of money on an H2S that’s supposed to be their flagship in 2023-2024, while you have a a6000 for a few $100s that has better autofocus. Even Panny was able to get their af down pretty fast once they implemented pdaf.

I love Fuji too much to jump ship just yet. I’m praying they listen to us, before too long, and address the fact that the latest firmware broke the AF-C and eye detect, or I’ll have to switch systems early next year. They have to fix this. As a Fujifilm xt4 user, I get the disappointment with the autofocus not being on Sony's or Canon's level. Sony has really nailed their autofocus tech with lots of investment in AI and processing power. But let’s not forget why we love Fujifilm: Fujifilm’s colors and film simulations are unmatched. They offer a unique look that’s hard to replicate. The design and build of Fujifilm cameras are top-notch, and they feel great to shoot with. The XF lenses are fantastic, providing high-quality optics across the board. Fujifilm is always rolling out firmware updates and new features based on user feedback or at least they try to do so.
Sure, autofocus is a big deal, but Fujifilm has a lot going for it that what keeps me hooked. Plus, they’re constantly improving, so I’m hopeful for even better performance in the future. 👍
And let's not forget that beautiful photos were made in the past without all these advanced autofocus technologies, and it's easy nowadays to say the system isn't good enough. 😉

I agree. I've had several fuji cameras. At the same time I've owned sony cameras. Currently the a7r4 and a7s3. Yet more often than not I reach for my fuji. Even before I had the xh2s, when I only had a xh1. Because of those colors, because I like how people look. Skin tones etc.
But... fuji made promos showing off their new improved afc and eye af. And my camera is not working as advertised. My AF needs are basic. Street photos. City scapes. Friends and family. I've never had the need to push a Camera to its absolute limits. I've used a variety of cameras from Canon, fuji, Panasonic and Sony. Only my fuji cameras have consistently given me false positives in afc. Ever since the xt2

I made the mistake of assuming Fuji autofocus had to have improved by now, and yet the ey-autofocus on my A7III was more rock solid with third-party lenses back in 2018 than the X-H2 with the newest 23mm 1.4….

Definitely a let down if you’re coming from Sony. I think at this point, it’s more of how much effort you want to put in to make sure your focus is good as it gets on any fujifilm camera.
The drawback is for us is the extra effort required 😅

  • @INFOXlive

For APS-C, there aren't a tonne of choices. In addition to their other limitations, Canon does not offer a wide selection of lenses. The same applies to Nikon. Your final decision will be between a Sony or Fujifilm camera.
Fujifilm cameras have some appealing features, but they are unlikely to match Sony and Canon's performance in the near future. It is not just a software issue, but also a hardware issue, particularly one involving the lens. Fujifilm does not have any proper video lenses. Instead of figuring out under what conditions you might have some luck, it is frustration free to use Sony right now if you want reliable autofocus. This becomes an issue when considering how to avoid wasting money on a system that will not meet your requirements.
If you are looking for a dependable tool and cannot afford multiple camera systems, Fujifilm is a risky investment that you may regret very soon. I like some Fujifilm cameras, but I do not see any economic reasons to buy them.
Fujifilm cameras and lenses should cost 50% less than they do now. I believe that if Fujifilm camera bodies and lenses were priced twice as low, I would purchase them for fun rather than professional use.

You know what's wild to me? The XH2S is around the price of a Panasonic S5II. Fujifilm best lenses are as expensive or more expensive than L mount lenses or even other full frame lenses. I'm beginning to wonder if I made the correct choice, as much as I love my Fujifilm, it's beginning to feel like a bad financial choice. I really want to stay with Fuji but at the same time I dont want to be fighting with gear only to end up with missed moments. Sure S mode is more reliable than C but whats the point of having C if it doesn't work. May as well take away continuous if it doesn't work. Its even worse when you tell me you grabbed focus but the system absolutely lied 😅.

It’s frustrating that I now own the XT-5 and the auto focus is still the downfall of the camera. I feel like the tracking system is there, it's good, but the communication between the tracking algorithms and the actual AF system is not there. I'm no engineer but it would seem that the tracking system would serve as feedback to the AF system on which AF points should be used to acquire focus. Actual real world evidence shows the systems are fundamentally showing and doing completely different things to the user, especially after the latest firmware updates (April 2024). Hopefully something can be done in software updates to fix this.

    • @MrRafaelgp
      @MrRafaelgp 5 месяцев назад +2

I think exactly like you. The software can track the face and the eyes, and the lenses have the technology to track them too, especially linear motor lenses. It's the communication between the two that's failing. I really hope that the problem can be solved by software. My real concern is that the limitation of Fujifilm's AF system is in the X-trans sensor 😕

i'm also seriously considering selling my XH2S and primes and jumping ship to Lumix... and I really don't want to because I love Fujifilm color science and aesthetics :/
i really do not know why Fuji refuses to seriously rework their AF system from the ground up. i'm thinking it might be a physical hardware limitation at this point because it's been years since they promised improvement.
even before they broke the xh2 and xh2s with 6.0.0 and the xt5 with the 3.0.1, fuji autofocus (especially af-c) has been atrocious to put it mildly... as you put it, completely unreliable. any videos taken where your subject isn't static is a coinflip whether or not it's going to end up being usable footage... so as feature-loaded as the xh2s is, it was never on the same competitive field as sony, or canon to begin with.
Panasonic took the harsh feedback from the community and rebuilt their AF from the ground up for the S5ii and S5iix and I'm just wondering why Fuji cannot do this, unless they're physically incapable to implement such updates...

    • @lee.ronin.photography
      @lee.ronin.photography  5 месяцев назад +2

You’d be really surprised the amount of cross brands between Fuji and Lumix users!
I recently picked up my s5iiX and man it’s effing amazing. It will only be for video due to the amazing AF and their subject tracking.
I ordered the 100sii and will mostly like sell all of my Fuji APSC gear to fully jump on the GFX and Lumix system.
I think it’s a brilliant move if you’re thinking of jumping into the Lumix system!

      @gamerw1zz 4 месяца назад +2

Exactly all of this! I've been thinking the same. I don't even make money off photography yet, at the moment it's just a hobby. But it's really frustrating when you go out in your spare time, take pictures, the system tells you it's in focus, get home and it's definitely not! The S5II is miles better than the XH2S and the lenses are cheaper than Fuji's top lenses. It makes no sense! I'm terribly disappointed because I love Fuji's color science but I hate even more wasting my time with this autofocus nonsense. I pay way too much money to have gear trip over itself while lying to you.

Reala Ace is great ,the colours are really spot on and I'm getting more sharp hits on birds in flight and even keeping the bird I want in focus BUT the cluttered background still wins when the bird in focus flies in front of buildings , trees or far away fields and the camera looses focus altogether or focuses on something else. Great Video. helps us little guys a lot.

A wrong or buggy firmware version can happen, but it has been weeks since the issues came to light and … nothing! That is not ok, Fuji should recall the update and go back to the previous version (however they name it) as a fast fix. They have done this before, and I held them very highly in that regard. Why not now?

This is a far better video than some of the 'world is ending' videos that have popped up recently.
Very balanced in acknowledging both sides of the coin, in that some people it's working perfectly fine, and some people it's working poorly.
Also nice that you at least once, said that it's continuous tracking AF/subject detection AF that's where the biggest issues are, instead of just saying that the AF as a whole, is completely garbage and can't focus on anything at all. Most people just keep saying the AF is trash, which just isn't accurate...but there are for sure problems with the AF-C system at times.
I had issues back maybe a year ago or more, when I first got an X-T5. I'd get the same green box confirmation in AF-S and it would look in focus, but when you snapped a photo...nothing was in focus, at all. It was super weird and not repeatable enough to know when. That definitely shook me, but after the next update they did...zero issues with that, so that was nice.
I got an X-H2 and had no issues and it semeed even better than the X-T5, don't remember the firmware sadly.
I have an X-H2s and it seems great on 5.10 firmware, I've heard some issues with 6.0 so I waited, but just updated anyway to see what it's like. Hopefully it's not horrible, but I'll find out when I go shoot some wildlife this week.
Either way it'll be better and faster than my GFX stuff haha. I still have a D500 to compare it to as well.
FYI, I've been shooting Fujifilm for about 5 years, but also owned Nikon, Canon, and one Sony (A7Riv). Been shooting in general for over 20 years.

Unfortunately if you rely on critical AF fuji may not be the brand for you . I would really hope that they fix it at least, the false positives. I had this issue on my X-S10 and when i made a video about it I was told it was my fault . Which is possible but, I didn't have that on my canon. What I will say is I use my gear mainly for video and I can get my focus to work fine for my type of videos. I love fuji for all of the features , I love the image quality. There is definitely an issue with my X-H2s that I didn't have before this update . I didn't update my X-S20 and it works much better than my X-H2s which is crazy. This issue won't make me sell these two Fuji cameras. I am not a full Fuji only user. I also have a Sony a7 iv. What annoys me is when people act like firmware in all tech doesn't come with issues like this . How many times have you updated a pc only for something else to malfunction, or your cell phone. As a person that has been in tech and working around 100s if not more firmware updates I can say its not as simple as it doesnt work and we will fix it tomorrow. It's a lot to it : finding what exact models were affected ( not just X-H2 or s but the slight differences in SKUs), what affected and caused this issue? . I'm not a fan boy to Fuji I'm a fan to tech lol so, I know this can be fixed in firmware because when I got my X-H2s I was blown away at how reliable the AF was compared to the XT4 and X-S10 I had.

I sent both new cameras back to Fuji within a week of purchase to have the focus re calibrated. They came back with “No issue” I have not been happy with the results on either camera. I was delighted when the new Firmware was released but very disappointed with the results. I have close to 100% out of focus shots. No signs of forward or back focus, every shot is just off. Last night I had a look at my old XT4 results and every shot was spot on. So now I’m more upset. I have started to look at other options. I hear what you are saying, but if there are serious AF issues that are being reported with these new generation of Fujifilm cameras they need to be addressed... IMMEDIATELY! There's no excuse for these cameras to be missing focus at such a high rate or giving false-positives that AF was achieved... especially on their X-H line of cameras. In theory, the stacked sensor X-H2s should be running circles on almost everything near its price-point(and in some cases, it does). That should include their AF performance.

My XH2S kept working like a champ but my a7r3 started freaking out and I couldn’t use it for a day because I had to let it dry. The colors and film simulations and how Fuji handles noise grain is so much nicer. Hard to let go. I just have the Sony as a backup.

It seems like it's a pretty avoidable issue for Fujifilm. I think two things would have to happen. they would have to hire new engineers to look over their auto focusing algorithms, and they would have to update some of the their older lenses that can't keep up with new AF tech. They make enough money to easily do both things. If Fujifilm brought their autofocus up to the level of their competitors, I don't see any reason to use any other camera. they would just be the best at almost everything

I do not own a Fuji camera but is the issue also towards the AF-S? I ask because I never use AF-C. I prefer to move the focus box where I want it to focus and I never rely on a camera to focus for me.

The problem is over hyped imho as it only effects AFC and CH....
Yes the latest update made the autofocus worse in AFC, and they will fix this hopefully soon
If the only thing I was shooting required me to shoot in AFC and CH then I'd not have got a fuji system in the first place.
I have zero issues in AFS and single shot which is how I shoot 90% of the time.
Even in CH and AFC I don't get that many missed focus using focus priority (not release), the only difference I see between my actual use and the Test videos I see, are they are testing Lenses wide open e.g. 33mm F/1.4 or 56mm @ F/1.2 pretty much the hardest focusing test as DOF is only a few mm/cm, once stopped down a few stops which makes focusing much more forgiving as the acceptable DOF is much deeper.
Yes in a perfect world, you want to nail 99% of the shots in focus even if the DOF is only 2 cm...
But in reality, in the last few years autofocus is much better than it was, and in the next update it will be fixed

I think it may seem overhyped and end of the world issue because humans tend to gravitate towards more negative news than positive news.
I know Fuji will fix the issue for AFC but it’s the question of when. More importantly a lot of folks who owns the XH2S (the only Fuji camera with a double stacked sensor) feel a certain way. (I don’t blame them either). It boosts fast read out speed and better AFC overall compared to the models below it.
But there’s the other side too… if they’re doing video work with it. You’d mostly use manual focus haha.

That a much older Sony a6000 with a 3rd party lens mops the floor with the X-H2s with a LM lens is unacceptable for a camera body worth $2K USD alone.
I love Fuji, have an X-T5 and an X-T2 that I bought recently, but they making the AF-C worse in a FW update is way too much.

@@lee.ronin.photography exactly you wouldn't buy a red camera at 20K and even expect auto focus. Racking sit outside of the camera. BUT you see the likes of Sony canon and even Nikon sorting there stuff out and now Panasonic are now pulling there finger out. The xh2s clearly has the tech and power inside. Someone somewhere has made a big mistake. As a pro photographer I dont see how other pros can just jump ship to another brand, my brand is built on the look of Fuji and it stands out from the crowd of canon and the washed out vintage look people achieve with that in the wedding space. People need to take a breath before updating especially if they us if for client work.
The problem I have is fuji hasn't acknowledged it and still has the firmware up for download with no warning. It may sound silly but it's a law suit waiting to happen. If someone claimed an emdmity case against me, meaning I missed important shots and I had to pay for the wedding and I could prove it was this firmware update I could easily take this to court and win. This update clearly hasn't been tested

Fujifilm doesn't have to have the best AutoFocus since they are still one of the best value kits out there. But you can't make the AutoFocus worse which is a bit of a problem. I still shoot on the X-T3, so I don't have the experience that others are having with the X-T5 or X-H2, but I do hope Fujifilm can figure it out.

I think in 2024 there is NO excuse anymore for not reliable AF, no matter if it's a fun camera or not. My Xh2s was as expensive as Sony A74. Fuji has the worst AF now and thats a shame.

My studio would've bought 2-3 XH2's and an XH2 a long time ago if it weren't for these AF problems. We've been waiting for them to get better with firmware....but it's getting WORSE. We've not only lost faith in this camera, but in Fuji as a company. Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to lose the great color science and other features, we are going with Sony (ditching Canon). Do better Fuji.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that Fujifilm camera aren’t pro level cameras. They’re definitely are, just weird quirks we have to work around it.
In the end, it’s up to how the user uses their tools. Fujifilm doesn’t make it easy on us when it comes to their AFC and subject tracking but everything else they’re offering is up there.

Of course it's a camera that can be used by pros. But.. fuji needs to step it up. Or don't claim improved afc. In their promo videos they should stop touting these new features as something that works, instead they should just say "it sometimes work, but its a quirky camera, so from time to time you may need to switch to afs if you want consistency
