Thanks to you and Edvard for his video. I had purchased the x100vi after all the hype about it. Then I used it for my daughter’s birthday and half the shots were out of focus. I was furious not only at Fuji but all the RUclips gurus who never mentioned the problem with its autofocus. If I pay that much money, I expect the camera to work the way I want it to work not get frustrated with it. I think it’s an ethical question too even if Fuji does not fix it, an ethical person should never ignore and come up with excuses. Hats off to you two and everyone that raises this major flaw in their cameras. I sold the x100vi the next day. I don’t care how a camera looks or feels if it doesn’t do the very fundamental job of taking a sharp picture because its focus doesn’t work.
Hmm.. I hate Fuji.. but I'd say the X100VI is the only camera in their current lineup that is really good and should be given a pass. X100VI has BY FAR the best AF out of all fixed lens mft/aps-c/ff cameras....because all the rest of them are rubbish!!! It's not meant to be fast with it's older yet featherweight lens. And most use it for stills or low motion in travel/street photography with medium apertures. Leaf shutter means you need to operate it slower too. With this, I've always had it set it on focus priority because I won't ever use this to track anything lol and therefore no manual focus override (af+mf setting turned off). Less than 500g and fully pocketable with a hybrid viewfinder - best thing Fuji have made and in my opinion the only camera Fuji should make. Their mirrorless aps-c all suck really bad and their lenses are mostly poor. Should just make instax, x100 fixed lens cameras and GFX medium format (where the AF is again best in class because it's better than hasselblads which is rubbish!)

Its even worse. And I made a lot of videos of fuji af mainly because of fanboys telling me "You dont know how to use the camera" "What are your setting" haha. Also one more reason is fuji marketing "Fast and accurate AI AF tracking"
Your focus point in your channel does start to look a bit 'single-point' indeed. The whole channel is just fuji AF roasts) but considering the speed of updates you probably still have a year ahead to keep the streak going.
@@Iamtongue I'm just making fun ofc. Sure, I have no high hopes that fuji reaches current Sony level, but I still expect them to improve over current performance sometime soon. I shoot dance videos for my wife's business with h2s at latest firmware on either 13mm viltrox or xf16-80 f4 on af-c zone / tracking and sometimes with eye priority at f2.8-f4. I usually get 1-3 minor hunts in 1 min footage and I just work around it with cuts or effects, not a big deal in my case.
We need more people like Edvard for sure. The major Fujifilm RUclipsrs are sadly too much into fake "reviews" which are just Fujifilm sponsored product presentations. Some have acknowledged the problem lately but you still can sense the carefulness in their wording when they speak about the autofocus. They don't want to mess up their relationship with Fujifilm which is a shame. It should be the other way round: Fujifilm should be afraid to mess up their relationship with RUclipsrs and customers...
If you are going to tell me your Fuji camera autofocus works fine.. XH2s, xh2, xt5, xs20 blah blah blah…back it up and show me receipts I’m getting sick and tired of people getting sick and tired of me talking about autofocusing when I am sick and tired of propagandists saying it’s an “improvement” in their own videos when clearly it’s a lie. He is 100% with this. Fujifilm has great cameras good specs, but AF/Tracking is the worst ever now.. With all my xt5 bodies i have downgraded firmware to v2.10 wich seem to work much better and this was the best solution for me rather than leaving the system for sony/nikon. Hopefully fujifilm fixes this
you totally miss the point @iamtongue. What you report about is true. Last firmware have introduced AF issues. Which is why I have shared your video and Edvards videos on FujiRumors big and fat so that everybody can see it, Fujifilm included. What’s going on now is we try to find out if there is an improvement on the X-M5. That’s all. And as I wrote on FR, I am „not impressed“ by the X-M5 AF, but it might be improved. But I also wrote on FR that I don’t know how much of that improvement is due to the algorithm or simply due to faster sensor readout of 26MP. The video that made me most confident is the 2.5 minutes live autofocus eye tracking of Thomas B Jones, especially the product mode with transition from product to face multiple times, which all happened smooth and without hunting and pulsing. This video has passed ignored by the „fair small creators“ whom we should trust. I don’t know why.
Fujifilm better come up with a fix very quick... one last firmware to see if they listened to people and made their camera worth their price... otherwise they are going to experience a MASSIVE exit of creators and users. And it would be deserved. That song is a banger though ! 😂
One last firmware? Even with XM5 it's still mediocre. It's still false positive in pal2tech video What I observed from the video, the box isn't doing as the initial design 'just simple confirmation of interface conveying that eye is in frame and focus is there'. Instead of a good eye AFC prediction and tracking, it's playing cat and mouse chasing game hunting the box (that's why you can shove the box from your eye) I don't know which genius programmed it that way but that's a godly move to destroy reputation build so far since Lumix has jumped ship with pdaf and can do it better
@@trym2121 yeah it is ridiculous at this point. And I agree with you, the “engineers” who worked on that don’t deserve their jobs. It is quite obvious now that they have no idea how to properly deploy a software, updates and more… I have 0 expectation on their “upcoming fix” but well. We will see. Changing system is also a cost to take into account, especially when doing it as a business. But yeah… Fujifilm pretty much threw away the wave of hype and success they had with this is issue.

@@jangarcia1338 the only way to shoot the xt20 (a camera I love btw) is to put it in back-button focus, manual focus and turn on focus peaking. Now you have af-s with focus peaking. Obviously still not ideal but I get the best focusing results this way. Also it's impossible to upgrade from the xt20 as they have removed the d-pads and installed film simulation dial on the successors...

One of the problems with the fugi autofocus that edvard highlighted is the amount of false positives. On the camera screen, it will show a green box which signifies you are in focus, but you are actually not. So any reviewer on youtube who just goes by the box on the screen is incorrectly measuring autofocus.
@@sigurdrille9693 I think that’s the main issue, when the algorithm does track the subjects it can’t actually tell when the lens has correctly focused on it a lot of the time so you get the green box on the blurry subject. Maybe a lot of RUclipsrs run on the same algorithms, they see the box on the subject so think it’s in focus but it’s not 😅 I can’t believe the amount of reviews that show “in focus shots” that are actually soft, it’s crazy.
I supposed to work and watched this video instead and I have to say - your reaction combined with Edvards sarcasm is a gold combination! But I have to admit being a Leica Q owner and user, AF can get even worse in 2024, but at least Leica doesn't promote it that hard like Fuji with "top notch AF" 😅. I can totally understand the frustration. As much as I love my Fujifim XH2, and have been a Fuji user for 7 years now, it’s kinda ridiculous how bad the autofocus is on even static shots. I recently shot an interview, 2 cam setup, one was Sony and another xh2. Sony never lost focus and my xh2 constantly lost focus. Will be posting this interview on my channel soon. And that is a catchy tune indeed haha

Others have already put up/said their AF problems with their fuji mirrorless camera even before. But, like what others have said, those loyal to fuji will just say: "on my body, it AF really good, maybe it is how you set it up. Play with the AF settings" This is their 5th gen. cameras, how long more will it take before they (Fuji) can finally crack the code on their AF 😅. Edvard even has a video comparing on the very old A6000 (1st gen mirrorless). If I remember correctly, When Canon made their first mirrorless camera the AF was also bad as expected on a 1st generation but firmware update and so on to their 2nd gen mirrorless cameras the AF drastically have improved. Was hoping the 5th gen of fuji would have finally caught up, but i guess we need edvards video and this video before maybe they (fuji) finally go back on their drawing boards to get their AF right. 😅

I have not seen any company whose communication department with its customers is so weak and insulting. They don't answer emails, they don't give an answer on social media, and they don't give an official statement. nothing Only after two years and for fear of losing the market two weeks ago, they officially said that we will give another update and they don't blame themselves for how much they messed up and how many users in professional work, from photographers to videographers, have problems and losses. It's really ridiculous I don't even have hope for a new update...

Fuji autofocus is garbage. and its a shame. a billion dollar company and they bring out tech that doesn't even keep up with 2014 camera's for a 2.5k price point. that's absolutely delusional and utterly giving the middle finger to your customers. its a ripoff. Fuji should get its shit together. I can't even upgrade from the xt4 to a newer (better) fuji camera because they are all useless with the bullshit autofocus they have. To actually turn this from toxic trolling to genuine debate, we all know Fuji was found to have breached Phase One's autofocus patents back around the time of the x-t4. The settlement was sealed so the terms of it aren't public. The problems started since about 5 years after that settlement. Was fuji forced to licence the technology (phase detect, specifically), under what terms? Could this therefore lie at the hands of Phaseone, ongoing negotiations over terms. Has Fuji been trying to strike out on its own. I think there could be more at play here, that just whipping the AF coders harder won't resolve on its own. Users the victims again between corporate battles. I mean, I'm not having the problems on the x-t5 the channels that make a livign from views do, but just throwing it out there.
I have an XS-20 and I love the camera; so much I bought a whole bunch of expensive lenses for it. But yeah - autofocus sucks. Not that I need to, but I won't be buying another Fuji until they substantially improve autofocus. Every recent Sony or Canon I've seen just pretty much nails it, there's no reason why Fuji shouldn't at least be on par.

And I have shared 4 Edvard videos... and made a follow up article with even more Fuji AF Sh*tstorm videos by several guys and smaller channels. Then I look at 1 video of Pal2Tech, and they get mad about me sharing that video too

Clearly Fujifilm uses it via "trusted sources", but you don't always take at face value. It is true, though, that you are rarely if ever critical of a feature or direction Fuji takes once it is no longer a rumour but a reality, and will push the advantages. A more balanced pros Vs cons would help show your glass-half-full perspective for what it is rather than anything less transparent. But you are a bit heavy handed with well intended critique of the site, while sadly the comments section has festered into a pit of toxicity on the real issues as trolls have the keys of the city.
I fixed my Fuji autofocus problems by swtiching to Nikon 😂😂 As a fanboy (former fanboy?) i want fuji to succeed but not at the expense of their users. I didn't have the same video AF problems that everyone else was having but it didn't stop me from switching over to Nikon. Unfortunately you gotta hit them where it hurts - and as long as people keep preordering every single release the corporate ppl won't care because profits are up.
@iamtongue I have shared TONS of videos of smaller creators, sharing the bad AF demos (includig YOUR video!!!!) Did you miss those articles? Please stop spreading misinformation about the coverage of this issue on FR. What I am doing now, is to try to find out how the X-M5 works… which I had no chance to test (nor you, nor Edvard). If there was a small creator who said „the AF on X-M5 is super-bad“ I would have shared it. But there were not many comments about AF, so all I can do is to try to find video samples of people who tested it.

I have a Fuji xs20 and I get for a lot of people it is important the autofocus, but is it only that aspect important ? Not for me because i like how it takes photo's, the look and feel of images and stills. At the moment not very experienced in the video department but like a lot of artists say compromise can unlock creativity. Disclaimer: I am not saying that fuji shouldn't improve their AF they definitely should, and it also baffles me that they suck so hard in it. But if I wanted to have the best AF in a camera, I would go for sony, bought fuji for their design and i love how to use it compared to other systems. Just preference, nothing more. But great video and hope Fuji will see this and improve their AF.
I bought my XH2S because of the promise of better AF. In photo it’s generally okay. But in video… I have so many clips where there is so obviously a person in frame and the eye box shows but the camera is still out of focus. Amazing thank you Fuji for knowing there is an eye or a face there, now actually focus on it.
Bought xt5 - but I am photo guy mostly. I was on old Sony a7 before and I don't see many issues with at. Maybe cause I don't use af-c, only af-s. But some photo where I saw eyes square - not really in focus,so I used to check it everytime

I was critical of X-H2 when it was released and switched to Sony A7RV instead. It felt like X-H3 of the future for twice the price. Haven't looked back since then. But, wow... didn't know Fuji has gotten this much worse since then.

Nice video. Although there are important considerations. Certainly the FUJIFILM AF issue is big and need to be modified but I believe there is also a lot of responsibility on the part of the many RUclipsrs who make videos and reviews without knowledge or just to have visibility and be compliant with the big brands out of personal interest. It's time to stop all of this.
Been with fuji since the xt2 (also owned sony) and after owning the xh2s for five months i finally gave up and sold it all. From xt2 to xh1, xt3, xt4 to xh2s, AF has never been fujis greatest aspect. However with the xh2s i expected more (when it comes to AF)especially in video. In any case i got tired of the false positives, of the little green box following the face or eye, making me assume everything is good when in reality its not. I still have my old xh1 and 35 1.4 and ill probably never sell them. I admit theres something special to them, and im not talking about film sims, couldnt care less about that but Af consistency is not it either 😅
Im at 10:11 right now and i need to say my X-T3 does not have this problem! I mean the autofocus is NOT GOOD but it looks way cleaner on a test like there. As soon as it gets more hectic or i try to focus something wich is just 99% in the focus zone it stresses me out but with eye detection and walking in a straight line it works fine.
There's no denying it: Fujifilm's autofocus fails when you push video recording to the limit. I have an X-H1, which is not covered by these latest software updates, which I only use for photography, and it works pretty well (and for videos I use a real video camera). Now I'm curious to try these video tests with my X-H1 camera too.
It can be a good push to try manual focusing with a good prime for photographer. The first parameter that I implemented on my XT-30 II was back button focus, still to lazy to pass in manual. I try Sony and Canon, it was so powerful, that I find it to easy.
To Fujifilm’s credit, the subject detection is not terrible. The eye detection is not terrible. Even the tracking is not terrible (but wiping away the tracking box is pretty funny). It’s just really sad that continuous autofocus cannot capitalize on it AND there is the lying green box. How does AF-S work so well and AF-C not so much? Why is it so hard for the AI subject detection and tracking to work well with the autofocus?

I was pestering you with so many questions in the comments like you know. 😂 Got me an A7CII and never looked back cause of the autofocus issues Fuji has (which was so hard to figure out with all the shilltubers pretending it’s good). GFX cameras have an excuse for this. The lens element are huge for the linear motor to move. LOL Damn... I've been a fuji users since the X-e1... it really hurts when you know you cannot use auto-continues
Nah no excuses! Canon RF 28-70 f2 is a freaking beast of a lens and focuses flawlessly, same goes for the 50 f1.2 and 85 f1.2. Fuji is not as good of a lens maker and in AF systems as the big 3

Been Fuji since 2018. AF never been a strong point. I want them to do better. For real. I love Fuji! I make a huge part of my living with Fuji cameras. If they can’t fix this by next year, I may jump ship. Man. Sucks. I love my XT5. Luckily I never use it for video. If you had to go into another camera system, for stills (I shoot headshots) where would you go without breaking the bank?

@@babyboy1971You should be aware of the AF limitations of the A7iv. It's fine for people walking, but if they are running towards the camera, you also get false positives and more than 30% out of focus if lighting is not bright sunlight.
Xt4 is the best camera they have pound for pound. Focus isn’t Sony like but it isn’t madness and has ibis etc. Tried the Gh7 the other day and that’s the best focusing camera I have ever seen. Even with old and slow lenses it (20mm f1.7) it works amazing. But fujis image just looks beautiful out the box… sometimes the ones you love hurt you the most!
Just decided to pull the trigger and upgrade my Nikon Z50 with the new Z50II. Now, the X-S20 DESTROYS the Z50II on paper but at least Nikon has a solid AF, allegedly. It's a non starter without it. Such a shame, I so wanted to go back to lovely Fuji cameras and I tried my best to convince myself that there is hope, but couldn't find any positive reviews or tests to enforce my confirmation bias.
There hasnt been firmware updates to come in November. There is no firmware update for X T5. We should better test after the update. Fujifilm knows this problem. And they have been working on. They respond always like we are working on that. We should test and see the latest firmware updates. Am I wrong ? Did fujifilm release the new firmware for X T5 ? Second, which camera he used ?
Fujifilm been selling well recently so they would either appreciate it and listen or ignore this AF issue because of sales. Hoping for the first scenario.

When people mentioned you need to do some setup and it will work better. For that kind of money that you have to spend to buy Fujifilm Camera. He thinks, that there is a bottleneck in the X-Mount. I think he's right. It's impossible, that Fujifilm isn't capable software-wise to improve, so it must be hardware-wise. But still keep in mind it's just tracking autofocus and automatic recognition of faces and objects. You don't need it all the time. You don't shoot fast moving objects all the time. In landscape, travel photography you don't need it. And also your kids and your pets aren't moving fast all the time. Tracking is a quite new technology, there are decades of photography where tracking wasn't existing. Generations of reportage photographer used Leica M - with no autofocus at all. Yes, it is a pity that our beloved brand hasn't got that technology, but it's not the case that no good photography is possible with a Fujifilm camera. Unfortunately there is nearly no good filming with Fujifilm. I was about buying an X-H2s for replacing my X-T3 and use it with my 100-400 for birds. I am glad I didn't spend that much money. I am really thinking of switching now. Or giving up wildlife photography. Just having fun walking around and doing chilled photography on my travels with my X-E2 with the 35 1.4. Or with my X-T3 and the 16-80. It's still big fun.
I think the standard baseline af should be capable of photographing your kids. Since there are a lot of folks who said they wanted to photograph their kids but left Fuji because it couldn’t keep up with that. Kids are unpredictable and they’re always juking you. If you can’t do that then the af system should be deemed as a failure. But if you’re a landscape shooter you have nothing to worry about. This only pertains to continuous tracking..
Have you looked at all into the olympus OM1ii? I do coastal bird photography and it's just so stinking easy to use. I tried taking my XT5 out for the same type of shoot and it was abysmal. It's the reason I sold my Xt5. Im not sure why, but there are tons of used OM1ii's for sale used on sites like MPB, it could be worth a look? Also I agree about the chill travel photography. I have an XE3 with a manual lens on it and it might be my favorite camera lol
Autofocus standard these day base on mobile phone , many people just using their phone cause easy to use but when people buying a camera even simple task can't do it that's why autofocus rating so bad

Got xt 20 and my sony old a7m3. Sony BLOWS fuji out if water. My fuji i keep using for travel stills in AFs mode only. I dont watch youtube reviews often cuz i just go shoot and deal with it.... But with fuji i just started on thus youtube rat hole..... Looking bad. And im preordered for xm5 to replace my xt20.... Ughhhhh. This entire fuji saga reminds me of canon 1Dm3 AF problems.

There's no kind way to put this, Fujifilm autofocus is absolute garbage - a joke - and it's often getting worse while other brands are getting better. A ten year old Sony is better than the AF on recent Fuji cameras. Fuji needs to decide who it's audience is. If it's not photographers, then keep pumping out the trendy cameras for the tiktok generation, but don't be surprised if everyone a little more serious starts to avoid the x mount platform. There is a massive cost to the loss of trust, and it will be very hard to recover from it, and soon enough the only thing people will take you seriously about is toy cameras. But even Tiktok kids will grow up... Someday.

But I was a lot more specific about the settings I used, and tried my best to emulate Edward's edited footage (how many outtakes when it didn't do this)?. You'll find my results on his video and a nice exchange with others, extra testing. Spoiler: I couldn't achieve what made Edvard's rage bait edit no matter what setting I used. Perfect no, but it encouraged me to get out more and video! Over on Fujirumors I also penned a song of my own (chat GpT did the heavy lifting): He talks like a king but hasn’t held the crown, Fuji’s autofocus, he’s tearing it down. Ive just read your comment on the other video (luckily managed to pause it before he started talking) after seeing your reply to someone on FR. Good to see someone actually trying to repeat the tests and provide full settings, much more definitive than the 'AF trash, Fooj bad' crowd. Ive deleted my Disqus account (again) after my posts were being removed, so much for the admins pandering to supposed fanboys, it seems the trolls are the ones allowed to run riot on there these days, saying what they want, making derogatory comments about who they want, flaming people like Chris Pal2Tech with no good reason. I feel the site is pretty much game over for any kind of reasonable chat with other photogs now. By the way, if you want to see the infamous 'Hey' lurking around on here, look for someone called lol-di3tf, different user names, exactly the same comments being spammed across Fuji related videos, the very definition of someone who needs to seek help.
@@djstuc Patrick banned me for complaining he kept linking "this lens" to amazon USA when many aren't in the USA and the affiliate links were ruining his content, suggesting he continue the links but clearly just tell us the product being discussed. I was very polite, too. But not before he actually changed what I suggested in the post concerned... Disqus itself gets uppity and overenthusiastic with censoring. I can rarely post using WiFi networks after about a week with an account. And my little song got flagged for spam when I edited it to correct a spelling! Not sure if it's disqus or Patrick, but there's a lot of "spam" and abuse of posters and third parties that just are allowed to run. Not sure if he's on there with a pseudonym, but I feel really bad for Chris. If QNON supporters posted on camera forums... It's sad, but I think there are certainly users of other brands on a tribal quest of scorched earth.
@brownbear100 i don't know if my Fujifilm X-T5 is as bad loke Edward shows.. But certainly it is bad - unfortunately - I can replicate many situations in which the camera misses focus. And I don't even need fast moving subjects, quite the contrary! Single focus, continuous or touch to track... in stills photography. The most reliable is, as on the old bodies, single point.. but all of them fail considerably. I really would like something more reliable and don't want to change system. May have to consider that in the future if things don't get solved.
@@liciniooliveira-becas3618from my Pentax days I am in the habit of never just shooting a shot once! I use AF-C a lot more now, but AF-S is still used a lot. Mainly because it's what I am used to. Nothing wrong with being skilled with AF-S so that you are just as competent with the back up if you need to switch off face detect, AF-C or both. The one thing I see a lot with stills is that people just don't adjust the AF-C customs settings. Set it right for one situation and it could actually work against you in another. If I had one wish, it would be for some more automation here - if I choose face detect on should I really need to help the camera to say to concentrate on the background where the face is and prioritise over the foreground, or to ignore the trees as the person goes past them? The presets are OK, but not better than an own customised setting. People simply don't do what Fuji needs you to. The solution really should be for Fuji to bring more Automation to take the dumb lazy human out of the question and understand what a user expects when they select face detect or birds etc. But as it is, I'm getting 80-85% hit ratio. Might a Sony get 95%? Perhaps. But then I'd have to use a Sony and there's lots of other reasons for using Fuji. When I moved to Fuji I tested the X-t2 against the A7III which was hype of the moment. X-t2 fitted what I wanted more. We all have different needs.
It's not an excuse. What I mean is that other camera brands at the same price can perform better. Why can't Fuji? They make excuses about needing the proper type of lens, but no. evenother camera brands with different types can performe better. I think Fuji wasn't aware or is just too proud of their film simulations, and they've fallen behind with autofocus performance. They should wake up and realize that they are super behind compared to all other brands. No excuses, Fuji!

God this is getting tiring - I have no problems with AF on my X-T5. In fact I tried to take some video with my iPhone yesterday - it was 10x worse at AF.

Thanks to you and Edvard for his video. I had purchased the x100vi after all the hype about it. Then I used it for my daughter’s birthday and half the shots were out of focus. I was furious not only at Fuji but all the RUclips gurus who never mentioned the problem with its autofocus. If I pay that much money, I expect the camera to work the way I want it to work not get frustrated with it. I think it’s an ethical question too even if Fuji does not fix it, an ethical person should never ignore and come up with excuses. Hats off to you two and everyone that raises this major flaw in their cameras. I sold the x100vi the next day. I don’t care how a camera looks or feels if it doesn’t do the very fundamental job of taking a sharp picture because its focus doesn’t work.

Hmm.. I hate Fuji.. but I'd say the X100VI is the only camera in their current lineup that is really good and should be given a pass. X100VI has BY FAR the best AF out of all fixed lens mft/aps-c/ff cameras....because all the rest of them are rubbish!!!
It's not meant to be fast with it's older yet featherweight lens.
And most use it for stills or low motion in travel/street photography with medium apertures. Leaf shutter means you need to operate it slower too.
With this, I've always had it set it on focus priority because I won't ever use this to track anything lol and therefore no manual focus override (af+mf setting turned off).
Less than 500g and fully pocketable with a hybrid viewfinder - best thing Fuji have made and in my opinion the only camera Fuji should make.
Their mirrorless aps-c all suck really bad and their lenses are mostly poor.
Should just make instax, x100 fixed lens cameras and GFX medium format (where the AF is again best in class because it's better than hasselblads which is rubbish!)

@@Iamtongue I'm just making fun ofc. Sure, I have no high hopes that fuji reaches current Sony level, but I still expect them to improve over current performance sometime soon. I shoot dance videos for my wife's business with h2s at latest firmware on either 13mm viltrox or xf16-80 f4 on af-c zone / tracking and sometimes with eye priority at f2.8-f4. I usually get 1-3 minor hunts in 1 min footage and I just work around it with cuts or effects, not a big deal in my case.
We need more people like Edvard for sure. The major Fujifilm RUclipsrs are sadly too much into fake "reviews" which are just Fujifilm sponsored product presentations. Some have acknowledged the problem lately but you still can sense the carefulness in their wording when they speak about the autofocus. They don't want to mess up their relationship with Fujifilm which is a shame. It should be the other way round: Fujifilm should be afraid to mess up their relationship with RUclipsrs and customers...

He is 100% with this. Fujifilm has great cameras good specs, but AF/Tracking is the worst ever now.. With all my xt5 bodies i have downgraded firmware to v2.10 wich seem to work much better and this was the best solution for me rather than leaving the system for sony/nikon. Hopefully fujifilm fixes this
you totally miss the point @iamtongue. What you report about is true. Last firmware have introduced AF issues. Which is why I have shared your video and Edvards videos on FujiRumors big and fat so that everybody can see it, Fujifilm included.
What’s going on now is we try to find out if there is an improvement on the X-M5. That’s all.
And as I wrote on FR, I am „not impressed“ by the X-M5 AF, but it might be improved. But I also wrote on FR that I don’t know how much of that improvement is due to the algorithm or simply due to faster sensor readout of 26MP.
The video that made me most confident is the 2.5 minutes live autofocus eye tracking of Thomas B Jones, especially the product mode with transition from product to face multiple times, which all happened smooth and without hunting and pulsing. This video has passed ignored by the „fair small creators“ whom we should trust. I don’t know why.

What I observed from the video, the box isn't doing as the initial design 'just simple confirmation of interface conveying that eye is in frame and focus is there'. Instead of a good eye AFC prediction and tracking, it's playing cat and mouse chasing game hunting the box (that's why you can shove the box from your eye)
I don't know which genius programmed it that way but that's a godly move to destroy reputation build so far since Lumix has jumped ship with pdaf and can do it better

It is quite obvious now that they have no idea how to properly deploy a software, updates and more… I have 0 expectation on their “upcoming fix” but well. We will see. Changing system is also a cost to take into account, especially when doing it as a business. But yeah… Fujifilm pretty much threw away the wave of hype and success they had with this is issue.

@@jangarcia1338 the only way to shoot the xt20 (a camera I love btw) is to put it in back-button focus, manual focus and turn on focus peaking. Now you have af-s with focus peaking. Obviously still not ideal but I get the best focusing results this way. Also it's impossible to upgrade from the xt20 as they have removed the d-pads and installed film simulation dial on the successors...

One of the problems with the fugi autofocus that edvard highlighted is the amount of false positives. On the camera screen, it will show a green box which signifies you are in focus, but you are actually not. So any reviewer on youtube who just goes by the box on the screen is incorrectly measuring autofocus.

You are absolutely right, so the algorithm may be a problem, but the communication with the lens might even be a bigger issue.
@@sigurdrille9693 I think that’s the main issue, when the algorithm does track the subjects it can’t actually tell when the lens has correctly focused on it a lot of the time so you get the green box on the blurry subject.
Maybe a lot of RUclipsrs run on the same algorithms, they see the box on the subject so think it’s in focus but it’s not 😅 I can’t believe the amount of reviews that show “in focus shots” that are actually soft, it’s crazy.

As much as I love my Fujifim XH2, and have been a Fuji user for 7 years now, it’s kinda ridiculous how bad the autofocus is on even static shots. I recently shot an interview, 2 cam setup, one was Sony and another xh2. Sony never lost focus and my xh2 constantly lost focus. Will be posting this interview on my channel soon.

I am okay with slow AF. I have used Nikon Z6 for a good while to deal with it. But being inconsistent and giving false positives is really really bad
My Fuji XT3 autofocus is more reliable than the latest gen cameras which is great for me because it helped suppressed the GAS that I had for them! 😂😮
Same with my X-T4.
But it still only mediocre. My XT3 does a lot of false positive on the eye on afc.
Others have already put up/said their AF problems with their fuji mirrorless camera even before. But, like what others have said, those loyal to fuji will just say: "on my body, it AF really good, maybe it is how you set it up. Play with the AF settings"
This is their 5th gen. cameras, how long more will it take before they (Fuji) can finally crack the code on their AF 😅. Edvard even has a video comparing on the very old A6000 (1st gen mirrorless).
If I remember correctly, When Canon made their first mirrorless camera the AF was also bad as expected on a 1st generation but firmware update and so on to their 2nd gen mirrorless cameras the AF drastically have improved. Was hoping the 5th gen of fuji would have finally caught up, but i guess we need edvards video and this video before maybe they (fuji) finally go back on their drawing boards to get their AF right. 😅

To be fair Fujifilm primary industry isn't making cameras anymore. They are only doing it a hobby pet project in honor of their origins.
I'm a Ricoh GR III user and I feel the pain of the Fujifilm people. AF wise, brothers and sisters, we are stuck in 2010.
To actually turn this from toxic trolling to genuine debate, we all know Fuji was found to have breached Phase One's autofocus patents back around the time of the x-t4.
The settlement was sealed so the terms of it aren't public. The problems started since about 5 years after that settlement.
Was fuji forced to licence the technology (phase detect, specifically), under what terms?
Could this therefore lie at the hands of Phaseone, ongoing negotiations over terms. Has Fuji been trying to strike out on its own.
I think there could be more at play here, that just whipping the AF coders harder won't resolve on its own. Users the victims again between corporate battles.
I mean, I'm not having the problems on the x-t5 the channels that make a livign from views do, but just throwing it out there.
I have an XS-20 and I love the camera; so much I bought a whole bunch of expensive lenses for it. But yeah - autofocus sucks. Not that I need to, but I won't be buying another Fuji until they substantially improve autofocus. Every recent Sony or Canon I've seen just pretty much nails it, there's no reason why Fuji shouldn't at least be on par.

Clearly Fujifilm uses it via "trusted sources", but you don't always take at face value.
It is true, though, that you are rarely if ever critical of a feature or direction Fuji takes once it is no longer a rumour but a reality, and will push the advantages. A more balanced pros Vs cons would help show your glass-half-full perspective for what it is rather than anything less transparent.
But you are a bit heavy handed with well intended critique of the site, while sadly the comments section has festered into a pit of toxicity on the real issues as trolls have the keys of the city.

As a fanboy (former fanboy?) i want fuji to succeed but not at the expense of their users. I didn't have the same video AF problems that everyone else was having but it didn't stop me from switching over to Nikon. Please stop spreading misinformation about the coverage of this issue on FR. What I am doing now, is to try to find out how the X-M5 works… which I had no chance to test (nor you, nor Edvard). If there was a small creator who said „the AF on X-M5 is super-bad“ I would have shared it. But there were not many comments about AF, so all I can do is to try to find video samples of people who tested it.

I have a Fuji xs20 and I get for a lot of people it is important the autofocus, but is it only that aspect important ? Not for me because i like how it takes photo's, the look and feel of images and stills. At the moment not very experienced in the video department but like a lot of artists say compromise can unlock creativity. Disclaimer: I am not saying that fuji shouldn't improve their AF they definitely should, and it also baffles me that they suck so hard in it. But if I wanted to have the best AF in a camera, I would go for sony, bought fuji for their design and i love how to use it compared to other systems. Just preference, nothing more.
But great video and hope Fuji will see this and improve their AF.

I bought my XH2S because of the promise of better AF. In photo it’s generally okay. But in video… I have so many clips where there is so obviously a person in frame and the eye box shows but the camera is still out of focus.

Bought xt5 - but I am photo guy mostly. I was on old Sony a7 before and I don't see many issues with at. Maybe cause I don't use af-c, only af-s. But some photo where I saw eyes square - not really in focus,so I used to check it everytime
The autofocus is a known issue and ongoing criticism were hoping FUJI improves.. I like how Edward dumbs it down whether it's part of his personality or not.

I was critical of X-H2 when it was released and switched to Sony A7RV instead. It felt like X-H3 of the future for twice the price. Haven't looked back since then. But, wow... didn't know Fuji has gotten this much worse since then.

Nice video. Although there are important considerations. Certainly the FUJIFILM AF issue is big and need to be modified but I believe there is also a lot of responsibility on the part of the many RUclipsrs who make videos and reviews without knowledge or just to have visibility and be compliant with the big brands out of personal interest. It's time to stop all of this.
Been with fuji since the xt2 (also owned sony) and after owning the xh2s for five months i finally gave up and sold it all. From xt2 to xh1, xt3, xt4 to xh2s, AF has never been fujis greatest aspect.
However with the xh2s i expected more (when it comes to AF)especially in video.
In any case i got tired of the false positives, of the little green box following the face or eye, making me assume everything is good when in reality its not.
I still have my old xh1 and 35 1.4 and ill probably never sell them. I admit theres something special to them, and im not talking about film sims, couldnt care less about that but Af consistency is not it either 😅
Im at 10:11 right now and i need to say my X-T3 does not have this problem! I mean the autofocus is NOT GOOD but it looks way cleaner on a test like there. As soon as it gets more hectic or i try to focus something wich is just 99% in the focus zone it stresses me out but with eye detection and walking in a straight line it works fine.
I downgraded my XH2 firmware to 2.01 and AF is infinitely better than the latest firmware. That was the last firmware before they added AI stuff.
I missed way too many shots with my fuji kit. Gave up a long time ago.

There's no denying it: Fujifilm's autofocus fails when you push video recording to the limit. I have an X-H1, which is not covered by these latest software updates, which I only use for photography, and it works pretty well (and for videos I use a real video camera). Now I'm curious to try these video tests with my X-H1 camera too.
It can be a good push to try manual focusing with a good prime for photographer. The first parameter that I implemented on my XT-30 II was back button focus, still to lazy to pass in manual. I try Sony and Canon, it was so powerful, that I find it to easy.
To Fujifilm’s credit, the subject detection is not terrible. The eye detection is not terrible. Even the tracking is not terrible (but wiping away the tracking box is pretty funny). It’s just really sad that continuous autofocus cannot capitalize on it AND there is the lying green box. How does AF-S work so well and AF-C not so much? Why is it so hard for the AI subject detection and tracking to work well with the autofocus?

Got me an A7CII and never looked back cause of the autofocus issues Fuji has (which was so hard to figure out with all the shilltubers pretending it’s good). You were one of the few people mentioning the problems.

Nah no excuses! Canon RF 28-70 f2 is a freaking beast of a lens and focuses flawlessly, same goes for the 50 f1.2 and 85 f1.2. Fuji is not as good of a lens maker and in AF systems as the big 3

@@babyboy1971You should be aware of the AF limitations of the A7iv. It's fine for people walking, but if they are running towards the camera, you also get false positives and more than 30% out of focus if lighting is not bright sunlight.

Xt4 is the best camera they have pound for pound. Focus isn’t Sony like but it isn’t madness and has ibis etc.
Tried the Gh7 the other day and that’s the best focusing camera I have ever seen. Even with old and slow lenses it (20mm f1.7) it works amazing.
But fujis image just looks beautiful out the box… sometimes the ones you love hurt you the most!

Just decided to pull the trigger and upgrade my Nikon Z50 with the new Z50II. Now, the X-S20 DESTROYS the Z50II on paper but at least Nikon has a solid AF, allegedly. It's a non starter without it.
Such a shame, I so wanted to go back to lovely Fuji cameras and I tried my best to convince myself that there is hope, but couldn't find any positive reviews or tests to enforce my confirmation bias.

There hasnt been firmware updates to come in November. There is no firmware update for X T5. We should better test after the update. Fujifilm knows this problem. And they have been working on. They respond always like we are working on that. We should test and see the latest firmware updates. Am I wrong ? Did fujifilm release the new firmware for X T5 ? Second, which camera he used ?
Things have not been the same since Panasonic went on the phase detect bandwagon. Back in my day their DFD autofocus was so much fun to clown on.
Fujifilm been selling well recently so they would either appreciate it and listen or ignore this AF issue because of sales. Hoping for the first scenario.
XT5 yesterday half the shots were out of focus. I could have brought my Sony and blasted. NP. I love Fuji. I will always adore their 56mm lens. Their AF is not good.
When people mentioned you need to do some setup and it will work better. For that kind of money that you have to spend to buy Fujifilm Camera. Panasonic isn't getting enough praise for their AF on the s5ii/s5iix/G7 and G9ii. It works really well and I think it's only second to sony.
He thinks, that there is a bottleneck in the X-Mount. I think he's right. It's impossible, that Fujifilm isn't capable software-wise to improve, so it must be hardware-wise.
But still keep in mind it's just tracking autofocus and automatic recognition of faces and objects. You don't need it all the time. You don't shoot fast moving objects all the time. In landscape, travel photography you don't need it. And also your kids and your pets aren't moving fast all the time.
Tracking is a quite new technology, there are decades of photography where tracking wasn't existing.
Generations of reportage photographer used Leica M - with no autofocus at all.
Yes, it is a pity that our beloved brand hasn't got that technology, but it's not the case that no good photography is possible with a Fujifilm camera.
Unfortunately there is nearly no good filming with Fujifilm.
I was about buying an X-H2s for replacing my X-T3 and use it with my 100-400 for birds. I am glad I didn't spend that much money.
I am really thinking of switching now. Or giving up wildlife photography. Just having fun walking around and doing chilled photography on my travels with my X-E2 with the 35 1.4. Or with my X-T3 and the 16-80. It's still big fun.
I think the standard baseline af should be capable of photographing your kids. Since there are a lot of folks who said they wanted to photograph their kids but left Fuji because it couldn’t keep up with that. Kids are unpredictable and they’re always juking you. If you can’t do that then the af system should be deemed as a failure. But if you’re a landscape shooter you have nothing to worry about. This only pertains to continuous tracking..
Have you looked at all into the olympus OM1ii? I do coastal bird photography and it's just so stinking easy to use. I tried taking my XT5 out for the same type of shoot and it was abysmal. It's the reason I sold my Xt5. Im not sure why, but there are tons of used OM1ii's for sale used on sites like MPB, it could be worth a look?
Also I agree about the chill travel photography. I have an XE3 with a manual lens on it and it might be my favorite camera lol

@@Iamtongue yea I went a little bit off topic there. The only thing Fujifilm has improved since the xt2 are video codecs. Image quality, buffer, high iso performance, price, build quality and autofocus have all remained about the same or gotten worse. They're lucky they're cute...
what @iamtongue does not tell you is that I have shared TONS of videos of smaller creators talking about bad AF, including the videos of IamTongue himself and Edvard. And I have made multuple aritcles about it. Not sure why Iamtongue did not tell you this.

Got xt 20 and my sony old a7m3. Sony BLOWS fuji out if water. My fuji i keep using for travel stills in AFs mode only. I dont watch youtube reviews often cuz i just go shoot and deal with it.... But with fuji i just started on thus youtube rat hole..... Looking bad. And im preordered for xm5 to replace my xt20.... Ughhhhh. This entire fuji saga reminds me of canon 1Dm3 AF problems.

There's no kind way to put this, Fujifilm autofocus is absolute garbage - a joke - and it's often getting worse while other brands are getting better. A ten year old Sony is better than the AF on recent Fuji cameras.
Fuji needs to decide who it's audience is. If it's not photographers, then keep pumping out the trendy cameras for the tiktok generation, but don't be surprised if everyone a little more serious starts to avoid the x mount platform.
There is a massive cost to the loss of trust, and it will be very hard to recover from it, and soon enough the only thing people will take you seriously about is toy cameras. But even Tiktok kids will grow up... Someday.
I followed Edvards "tutorial" with the x-T5. Won't repeat the outcomes here. But I was a lot more specific about the settings I used, and tried my best to emulate Edward's edited footage (how many outtakes when it didn't do this)?.
You'll find my results on his video and a nice exchange with others, extra testing. Spoiler: I couldn't achieve what made Edvard's rage bait edit no matter what setting I used. Perfect no, but it encouraged me to get out more and video!

Ive deleted my Disqus account (again) after my posts were being removed, so much for the admins pandering to supposed fanboys, it seems the trolls are the ones allowed to run riot on there these days, saying what they want, making derogatory comments about who they want, flaming people like Chris Pal2Tech with no good reason. @brownbear100 i don't know if my Fujifilm X-T5 is as bad loke Edward shows.. But certainly it is bad - unfortunately - I can replicate many situations in which the camera misses focus. And I don't even need fast moving subjects, quite the contrary! Single focus, continuous or touch to track... in stills photography. The most reliable is, as on the old bodies, single point.. but all of them fail considerably. I really would like something more reliable and don't want to change system. May have to consider that in the future if things don't get solved.

I use AF-C a lot more now, but AF-S is still used a lot. Mainly because it's what I am used to. Nothing wrong with being skilled with AF-S so that you are just as competent with the back up if you need to switch off face detect, AF-C or both.
The one thing I see a lot with stills is that people just don't adjust the AF-C customs settings. Set it right for one situation and it could actually work against you in another. If I had one wish, it would be for some more automation here - if I choose face detect on should I really need to help the camera to say to concentrate on the background where the face is and prioritise over the foreground, or to ignore the trees as the person goes past them? The presets are OK, but not better than an own customised setting. People simply don't do what Fuji needs you to. The solution really should be for Fuji to bring more Automation to take the dumb lazy human out of the question and understand what a user expects when they select face detect or birds etc.
But as it is, I'm getting 80-85% hit ratio. Might a Sony get 95%? Perhaps. But then I'd have to use a Sony and there's lots of other reasons for using Fuji. When I moved to Fuji I tested the X-t2 against the A7III which was hype of the moment. X-t2 fitted what I wanted more. We all have different needs.
It's not an excuse. What I mean is that other camera brands at the same price can perform better. Why can't Fuji? They make excuses about needing the proper type of lens, but no. evenother camera brands with different types can performe better.
I think Fuji wasn't aware or is just too proud of their film simulations, and they've fallen behind with autofocus performance. They should wake up and realize that they are super behind compared to all other brands. No excuses, Fuji!

God this is getting tiring - I have no problems with AF on my X-T5. In fact I tried to take some video with my iPhone yesterday - it was 10x worse at AF.
