I had a graduation photoshoot yesterday, I used the XH2... Back on my laptop, I had to zoom in on each photo to check if the eyes are sharp enough! This is really unreliable and so tiring when you work with over a thousand photos. Fuji, we need a reliable AF so we can stop thinking if it's in focus or not!

I can confirm that the AF is lacking for video, especially when there is a lot of movement or quick and repeated focus shifts from fore- to background. However, I noticed that for stills there is a big difference depending on what lens you are using. I feel that the XF70-300 and XF33 1.4 with their newer linear motors are extremely reliable at focusing. I had a situation a few weeks ago where my X-H2 AF easily outperformed my colleague's Z8 when shooting hummingbird hawk-moths, which are not that easy to capture. The AF was spot on! Same for most portrait situations.

I recently switched from a Fuji X-T3 to the Sony A7iv. Granted, the Fuji was older technology, but shooting with the A7iv has been a revelation. The autofocus is so much better, and the responsiveness of the camera is nearly instantaneous. The Sigma and Sony lenses I got are lightweight and have aperture rings, so the shooting experience is similar (I don’t shoot with zooms). I really like the Fuji system, and the images from my X-T3 were fine, but without reliable autofocus there’s no upgrade path. Unfortunately, Fuji is becoming the Leica M of APSC.

Great comparison. I don’t have the XT5 but I have the XH2 and see comparable results when compared to my Sony bodies. My take on Fujifilm autofocus is a little different. I see the X line as a great walk around and portrait line of cameras and not a sports shooting brand. So the autofocus tracking ability for fast paced movements doesn’t bother me. I shoot a bunch of brands and I know if I want to shoot action, I’ll grab one of the brands that are designed for those scenarios. I don’t think anyone is going to the Olympics with a Fujifilm body 🤷🏽‍♂️. What Fujifilm lacks in autofocus they make up in almost every other category, and that’s from a Sony and Nikon first shooter.

You’re also on a league of your own too, not many people are fortunate enough to shoot with multiple camera systems.. that’s why I keep harping on the fact people should spend their hard earned money on something that works and that is reliable.

@@Iamtongue I understand your perspective 100%. For those that are new to photography or do not have the budget to operate with multiple brands, it’s best to get what will check most if not all the boxes for your needs. I see Fujifilm as a more premium tool with a focused purpose. Example: People buy Hassleblad for its image quality and history and not its autofocus capabilities, portability, or menus. My point is to know what your intention and the purpose of the tool is before grabbing it. I see your work all the time and you can create amazing images on any brand. That comes with knowing the art form and understanding the basics that applies to all brands. Too many “new” photographers expect the cameras to do all the work 🤷🏽‍♂️.
I used to go on nature walks in my hometown and even though my Nikon and Canon cameras had superior autofocus, my gear choice was frowned upon, by Leica and Fujifilm shooters. Not because of their cost but because of the process. I could shoot and move on and never appreciate the purpose of that community, my settings or the environment.

I like Fuji color but I had to sell my XT1 years ago because I did not bring it out much as it was hard to use (I found that I missed focus a lot obviously). Nowadays I bring my camera out every time on a trip and have fun shooting not caring much if the subject is going to be in focus because they always do 99% of the time and I can focus more on the composition, lightning and etc rather than the camera system flaws with my A6700. Great video. I can't tell if the soft Fuji photos show up randomly, or if it occurs at a certain distance (i.e. as the subject gets closer to the camera). Can you comment on that?
To be fair, "acceptably sharp" is a real thing - depends on what you are doing. But I can agree that "tack sharp" is and should be the goal, every time. ESPECIALLY because you tried the exact same lens on both cameras, the results on the Fuji are just embarrassing and sad.
I guess with Sony you get more hits, saving time. But then you lose time editing the gross colors and over-sharpening (yep, I think Sony is too sharp at times). With Fuji, you have to overshoot, so the time saved on editing is lost culling. At the end of the day I wouldn't choose the 6700 - I just do not like the layout, the poor displays, single card slot, and so on. Still waiting for a good FF option in the $2-$3k range, otherwise I'm saving up for a Z8 or R5ii or sticking with the mighty XT3.
I will be OK with Fuji jacking prices when they add the processing power the cameras seem to badly need. All the fastest FF cameras are use dedicated chips to image / AF processing. But IDK.

I switched to Nikon ZF, and the build quality and AF are on a higher-quality tier than the XT-5. I sometimes miss the megapixel count, but the ZF brings me the same joy of shooting like the XT-3 used to do for me.

Great video man, it's sad that Fujifilm has screwed up so bad their AF.
I won't leave Fuji, as a hobbyist I just love the experience of my X-T5, but I can relate to what happened to you on the gym, just on the opposite side.
I traveled to Japan with a friend. In Kyoto we visited Fushimi Inari Shrine, which was stuffed with tourists. We only had limited time to get some shots within the row of Torii gates.
I bought a X-T2 in Japan (poetic, iykyk), and now I have experience shooting Fuji. I took an amazing Pic of my friend within the Toriis, discounting the missed shots.
I taught my friend how to use the camera, and sadly all the shots he took of me were focusing on what was on my back except for one where I am in a very dark spot.
What is depressing is that I know that it wouldn't have metered if I got my X-T5, I am 90% convinced that the result would have been pretty much the same.
The X-T2 is still a very capable camera, but Fuji keeps dropping the ball with their AF. It pays off that their color science and in camera raw conversion tools are unbeatable as a combo.

I bought the Sony A7 III in 2019, but I love film simulations, so I also purchased the Fujifilm X-T30 and the XF 23mm F2 lens. I found that even though the XF 23mm is one of the fastest lenses in the Fujinon lineup, the hit rate with the X-T30 is much lower than the A7 III. I hoped Fujifilm would improve their autofocus in the X-T4, X-T5, and even the X-H2. This year, I bought the X-T5 and sold my X-T30 II (I had sold my original X-T30 three years ago). However, the X-T5 showed very little improvement. Now, I 'm like, “Okay, Fujifilm is for fun and for their film simulations. I’m okay with this because I don’t do photography for a living. But when it comes to shooting sports, birds, or even street photography, I definitely go with my A7 III and all my Sony/Tamron lenses.

    interesting video!
It's a shame how Fuji messed up the AF with the firmware. Personally, I'm still on version 2 on my X-T5,
so it works great. I use face and eye AF with AF-C all the time and would say my hit rate is around 90% for my street photography.
My commercial work is slow-paced, so I have no issues there.
However, when Fuji updated one of my cameras, I noticed more issues and ended up selling that camera.
I'm also using the X-S20 with the newest firmware, and it's not reliable. I noticed worse performance on the street and strange things going on in video AF.
I used the A7S III and A7 IV professionally at the agency where I worked before, and I kind of miss Sony for my film work.
Though nowadays I mostly do stills and would still stick with Fuji for that,
as you say, it saves a lot of time in editing. But it seems like I shouldn't update the firmware!
However, the thought of getting something else for video is on my mind at the moment.
Considering how much criticism Fuji is getting right now, and that even the most fundamental
fanboys are starting to acknowledge the issues, we might get it fixed soon.
Basically, what they have to do is go back to firmware version 1 with the AF and throw everything else in the trash!

I wish the A6700 had a joystick, better EVF and better rear screen. If it matched the X-T5 or H2 specs I would have jumped on it a LONG time ago. Very good comparison! I shoot with the XT5 and yes, I have "false positives" sometimes on moving subjects. But I'm a humble amateur, and if I lose a shot now and then, well, the world keeps on turning anyway... And, the Fuji output is gorgeous. The JPEG's are a lot nicer, I think, than the Sony's, as your video shows. As you point out, Fuji's RAW files are fantastic; they are very easy to edit. Also, I like the handling of the Fuji XT series; no need to dive into menu's to get perfect lighting. So, nothing is perfect and if I would switch (it would be Nikon then, no doubt), I'm pretty sure I would like the AF better - but I would miss other things that I like in the Fuji system. That said, my son is pro shooter and, in particular, videographer and he cannot afford to miss focus at all, so he is in the process of switching from Fuji XH2 to, probably, Panasonic S5IIx. 12:40 About the sharpness you mentioned.. I’ve been pixel-peeping the RAW files from my a6100, and it also looked “too sharp” to me with no post-sharpening (with a sharp sigma 56mm 1.4). It occurred to me at the time that Sony might be secretly adding sharpness. There is indeed an in-camera setting to reduce sharpness below 0. At -3 (minimum value), the photos looked “correct” when pixel-peeping. This could mean, that -3 is actually 0, and 0 is actually +3. With how much trickery companies use to get ahead of competitors, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Sometimes people may feel that a lens is “too sharp”. This is not the case, unless softness is the desired style. The sharpest lens imaginable would only be as sharp as nothingness (where there is nothing that breaks the light), so any sharpness that looks unnatural must come from in-camera or in post.

I own Sony A7IV with 2 Tamron lenses. Tamron being owned by Sony might be relevant. I agree that a misfocus is a misfocus though and on the hit rate count. But I would have liked to know Fuji lens hit count vs Sony lens hit count, native lens might make more difference on Fuji (or might not) but it's an avoidable weak point in the test.

I’ve done this test with native glass and people tell me that I should get a glass that’s for both mounts to make it fair to truly test out their af system. Why is it that Sony gets 96% hit rate on a third party lens and Fuji gets 25% they are the same lenses, with same motors. Fujis af system is trash. And the more people open their eyes and admit that there’s a problem. The faster fujifilm the company will fix it. But if the fanboys are all stuck in la la land and tell Fuji there’s nothing wrong ,they will get complacent and fuck with the cameras we truly love and I think we are witnessing it in real time right now.

I'm using the h2s for video but I shot manual lenses only. Fuji's more like an entry level cinema camera than a hybrid mirrorless at this point: no AF, but very good codec, formats, colors and price. Video RAW doesn't make sense in a mirrorless anyway... if a project you're in asks for RAW, it shouldn't beeing shot on a mirrorless.

a few months ago, i sold my 2 xh2 cameras and 5 Fuji lenses and got a pair of canon r6ii. The Xh2 was great, the photos when it nails it are amazing but it was just so often that it misses a possible banger.
I kept some of my fuji x lenses cause I still love the system and I still have an xt3. The xt3 has a slow AF but at least it was more reliable/accurate with the green box.
I have 2 xt3 cameras for when I miss shooting fuji and the canon is sometimes just too big. The Xt3 hasn't let me down, yes it's slower but it has amazing colours and I just love the whole feel of them

Then came those dreaded software updates. Ruining the shooting experience one update at a time.
The sad part is that a stacked super fast hardware system like the XH2s can be a monster with a good AF system. The Firmware 1.0 was a great example. I just want Fuji to wake up before it's too late.

I am shocked that you said the images from X-T5 are not as sharp as the A6700. On DPreview website they have standard test images for all cameras. Looking at the X-H2+56mm R lens vs the A7IV+85mm GMaster combination, you can read more of the text (near the middle of the test chart) with the Fuji X-H2. So, I switched from Canon to Fuji around 2016. The last Fuji camera I bought was my X-T3 and it's been my workhorse. Not a fan of Sony because their colors are trash. As for AF and Fuji, I've found the lenses make the biggest difference. Never had a problem with the f2 lenses. But some (I'm looking at you pre-2021 35mm f/1.4) are just horrendous. Oddly, Sigma lenses work really well with Fuji, at least in my experience. I'm finally upgrading, though. Waiting for my X-S20 to arrive.

I am a X T 5 user and photos are pretty sharp. What do you mean by sharpness ? I dont understand youtube photographers. Even my X T 20 produce sharp images with 16 mm f. 1.4 lens. Sharpness depends on the lens that you use. If you use a fantastic 18 mm 1.4 fujilens with XT 5 then what do you need more of? Fujifilm keeps updating the firmware, but your videos are going to be here forever.
. No camera is perfect, and engineers keep improving. will have better focus. As a FUJİFİLM user, I use my XT 5 camera for documenting archaeological materials, street photography, travel photos, and videos. It is dam sharp. Again, sharpness depends on your lens. If you use a better lens, then your photos might look sharper than fujifilm. I tell people that if you want to shoot documentary, architecture, portraits, landscapes, night photography then Fujifilm does pretty well. And SONY İS expensive.
