Excellent. I’ve got a 2003 sitting in the garage I’m fighting with my brothers estate over. Hasn’t run in 8 years. Needs a carb rebuild & new ignition module plus all the other age related maintenance . I offered them $900 bucks as is. They see big money in it.

What’s up Tripp? Randy here! I ride a ‘97 1200 XLC...I would suggest you tear that carb down, check the float, and by ALL means change the carb and intake seals, don’t cost much, but if they are cracked they’ll suck air and you’ll think the carb is whacked! Of course you can spray carb cleaner while it’s running on the seals and listen for change in idle to determine a leak, I’d also bet with that low of mileage the air mixture screw is still factory set and has the plug covering it. You have to drill it out to gain access to the mixture screw! I rejetted my bike because I changed the air cleaner and pipes, factory jets would fart when throttling from an idle... good luck! Keep us posted!

If that bike has only 900 miles on it and the tires are not cracked or dry rotten, why would you need to change them? Great buy I wish that I could find 1000.00 sporty or most any Harley Davidson. Good luck!!

Long time Harley owner and wrencher here. I would say you got a good deal from what I can see. A Clymers repair manual is a great investment. The carburetor will definitely have to come off and be cleaned and rebuilt. Carb jets will need to be removed for cleaning passages, also after removing the air fuel mixture screw be sure to note how many turns out it is. Rule of thumb is 1 3/4 to 2 turns out from lightly seated all the way in. Float height will have to be set. Throttle and idle cables require some finesse to get them right. Be sure the throttle cable has about 1/8" of play, and snaps back when you turn it. Again, these tasks are all in a Clymers repair manual for your year and model of motorcycle. Oil and filter change, fuel tank cleaned, new spark plugs, battery replaced and my guess is she will fire right up! Marvels Mystery oil in the cylinder has worked for me in the past too. Soak those spark plugs with PB Blaster like you said before trying to remove them. If you run into any problems I will be glad to chat with you on the phone and help out.

I wonder if the very judicious use of a torch to warm up the area around the plug holes just a bit. Nothing excessive but a few days trying to get PB Blaster down on the plug threads and then with a fire extinguisher next to you heat around the plug holes and i think you stand a real good chance of removing the old plugs.

In the past guys would never properly lube and maintain the advance plate in iron engine sportsters. They would stick in full advance and eventually wind up burning a hole in the rear piston. The owner would pull off the head, see the hole and figure his engine was ruined. We used to buy these day in and day out for less than $1000. We would fit a new set of pistons, fix the advance plate and sell the bike for $3000 to $3500. Made enough money to buy my first pan head.

Seems to be a great bike! I look forward to watching you work on it. Great thing about Sportsters, they are easy to work on. At 0:52, I have the same spots on my lower forks. I tried several things but to no success. However, I used steel wool on my chrome with (Limeaway/ cheap at dollar general) makes chrome look new, worked great. I fixed up a 1998 95th anniversary edition. Runs great and I love it.

@@trippontwowheels I sure did sub, thank you :). Recent things I've done to my Sporty, I rebuilt and rejetted the carb. I went from a 43 idle jet to 45 and a 170 pilot to a 180. I installed a Arlen Ness big sucker stage 1. Bike runs a lot better with great throttle response. I also installed the EZ adjust air/fuel mixture screw on carb. I highly recommend this, makes it easy to dial in the carb. Next, I plan to pack the bearings for the front and rear wheel. This bike has open bearings, so I plan to go with closed bearings. I may also wrap my pipes, but still thinking about it..lol.

That’s the one I’d get. Especially if you plan on changing the exhaust and air box. You’ll need to re jet the carb if you do.
You dont have to buy a new air cleaner setup, just get a k&n filter and cut some holes in the back plate to let more air in.
Do some googling and scan the forums and you’ll see some examples.

Those OEM petcocks are garbage and a headache waiting to happen. The use vacuum to let the fuel flow. The diaphragm in there goes bad and will leak, or the vacuum line cracks and won’t let fuel flow, and then you’re sitting without a running bike. I’d change it out for a Pingle or other quality aftermarket petcock.then just cap off the vacuum line.

Tripp On Two Wheels They’re a little pricy so I’d only get that if you’re going to keep the bike for a while. They’re designed for high flow high horsepower needs. They’re the best you can buy but not necessarily worth it for everyone. A cheaper more traditional style works fine. Just make sure you get one with a reserve.
