To save your new battery cover, drill a small hole through each tab. After you install the cover, put a short zip tie through the hole to keep the cover from slipping off.
Sportster Evos are supposed to be the most reliable engine ever made by HD. 4 gear driven cams and a unitized case. With a CV carb attached, it would last you forever.
I would spray some sort or oil in the cylinders after the bore scope and let it set a day or so. This way maybe some lubrication can get around the cylinder walls and between the rings. Sure it may not work but at least you tried and if you are lucky the dry rings will not scar the cylinder walls when you do try to start it.

Don't know about the Sportsters but I read an article about a guy who had 114k miles on an 80cu Evo. Harley Davidson bought it from him (or gave him a new one, don't remember) but those engines are arguably the best engine HD ever made.

I was just thinking, since the oil seems to be all on the bottom how about leave the spark plugs out and fire the starter to bring all the oil back up and circulate it through to make it easier for you to remove all the old oil and replace everything with fresh oil :)
Working nights I watched the first four episodes and no waiting to see if it cranks. I have bought and sold many bikes that were literally in boxes, never have been able to find one that clean
Interested to see how that interstate battery treats you. Everyone i've ever talked to has had nothing but problems with non-HD batteries, so i've always stuck with OEM there. Also, one thing on my 05 is I go a super shock on those spark plug wires. Those things are BRITTLE! A cheap change out that will not shock you.
Hi Tommy! I'll have to keep my eye on the battery (it's on a tender now). Thanks for your comment, I just found your post this morning. Hope you subscribe if you haven't already. -Tripp
Start that sucker. If the bottom end has been sitting in oil its fine.. If there is surface rust on the cylinder walls it will wear off fast.. If there is rust ring where the pistons were well worst is deep pits which will cause compression loss or oil blow by. Either it will wear fine and your good if its bad.. youll have to pulls the cylinders anyways.
