The second I saw the ultimate dad shoes in the reflection of the chrome I knew I was watching the right video haha. Thanks a lot man. When I went through school they didn’t teach us about carbs to much. They just kinda threw one at us and told us to take it apart.
Happy to Help, Any questions just ask. LOL with the dad shoes. Thank You for your Sub Jacob. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Great videos Rocco - I'm a Sportster fan too (2002 model) and appreciate your pragmatic and instructive maintenance videos. Please continue! Your approach to RUclips content is excellent. Many thanks from the UK!

Good information, Mr. Rocco. I have a bit of info that may help somebody. I bought a 2006 1200 Sportster that had sat for 8 years with a rusty tank and had to rebuild the carb. Even after the rebuild and converting to a non-vacuum petcock to eliminate any variable, it would run and idle great... until it got to operating temperature. No check engine lights, but after checking the ECM for stored codes I found a code for Crankshaft Position Sensor, which became a thing with 2004 and up Sportsters. The bike would begin running super rough and die with zero throttle. If you held the throttle open any amount, it ran great. You could set the idle speed screw up really fast and the problem disappeared, but it wasn't fixed, naturally, and was super tough to try and ride. With that $68 sensor, it ran like new. You could idle it down so low that it seemed it would stall and it wouldn't get rough running or die. Just something to look for if you have a 2004 and up Sportster.
Thank you for the insight. And all your support Tommy. Ride safe and have a great day.
Do you remember where you locked up the sensor? I’ve got an 05 sportster xl1200c with the same issue.

Hows it been? I bought that arlen big sucker stage 2 from you a couple years back for my 04 sportster. Wondering if you could email me again, I have a couple questions
@@rburdine23 Hello, This will work.
TWR, excellent instructions and flow is perfect. Question. On the 2003 model what would cause fuel to flow out of the air breather (hollow bolts)? Is this being caused by a float that is stuck wide open or is there another cause for this? What is the typical fix?
I would check and clean your carburetor. And make sure your petcock is in good working order. test and check. Your gas tank screen is up most important. Take a look at this video ruclips.net/video/VjWzPp5mWec/видео.html. and how to test your petcock ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXIn/видео.html. Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Ricky. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a Great Day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Hi. I took your advice. I rebuilt the carb. Wow did it ever need it. Main,Idle were all blocked. Even the Injector jet was blocked. It's a 2003 Softail FXST . I have a question on the Air/Fuel mixture screw on the underside of the carb. This bike does have a #45 Idle speed jet and a #190 Main. The bike also has Vance Hines exhaust. The bike had the screw out almost 4 turns. This seems excessive. What is your recommendation on this?. You specify many less turns during your rebuilds but typically its stock pipes etc. Should I bump the idle jet up to a #48 and reduce the turn to 1 3/4 to 2 full turns? note i am located in Texas, elevation at 450 ft' ASL.
Excellent video and instruction. I appreciate your advice on just slowing down and thinking things through and being patient. I recently got my grandfather's 92' 883 (4k miles) and your videos are helping me go over the bike. Thank you.

Labor of love and patience. Thank you sir for your video.
I so appreciate your detailed descriptions and levelheaded instructions. I’ve been watching through all your videos as I have been working on my ‘04 Sportster. I think this is the video I’ve been waiting for!
My bike has been dying sometimes after coming off the throttle, and before that it had idled poorly and would die if left without the choke.
I followed a video of yours and replaced the fuel filter. Next step for me is to do all the checks in this video, and check the voltage regulator.
Thanks so much for this great content!
Happy to Help. Thank you for your kind words. Any question just ask. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Did you try cleaning idle jet?
Im having the same problem have to flick the throttle over and over at red lights, sometimes shell idle for like 30 orn40 seconds maybe 1 min then she bogs out and dies
excellent video, I was having trouble and I ended up checking the vent hose from the fuel tank. The line had paint chips in it. I would pull them out start the bike check it again and pull more out. I did this until no more paint chips and the bike runs great. I doesn't stall after running it for 20 minutes. I did what you said check the petcock, vacuum hose and tank. Great advice. Thank you

Just bought an 06 custom. You're videos are a tremendous resource. Thank you so much

I really appreciate your videos. I was basically given my ex-FiL's 1997 Sporster 1200C after he passed away last year. It would start up, but idled poorly, ran poorly, carb-farted, backfired, intake manifold leaks, leaked gas and fluids everywhere, broken rear shock, broken choke cable, damaged throttle/idle cables, 13-year-old tires, bent front wheel, and had a salvaged title.
Your videos on carbs were especially helpful. As of this evening, the Sporty is purring like a kitten. And she is road legal, having passed the Florida rebuilt vehicle inspection two weeks ago. Many thanks!
I am really happy to read that. Sportster are great bikes. Any questions just ask. Good luck with the ride. Thank you for watching and your sub David. Ride safe and have a great day.

Hi from Western Australia. I own an old 95 883 that's running rough, not a high mileage on her for the age but I don't go anywhere on it as I don't trust her atm because of the rough running. @@TwoWheelRocco I rebuilt the lower end of the carb and the fuel mist is now a massive flow of fuel. It's being sucked intoy breater bolts and brokey oil down and burnt it within aatter of days. I got screwed over by a shop. They installed a "new" Ultima electronic ignition. But now when I turn key to on position it fires the plugs. Without engine running. And sounds like a bb going off. I got deep stroked for $1100. I have tried everything and no luck. I've not slept for days obsessing over this bike. It's a public hair away from being brought in my living room and set on fire. I've spent hours searching and searching and nobody knows how to help me.
@@shadowlane1154 if you could send me a cell number and I will give you a call. I don't fully understand what's going on with your bike.
Thanks for the instruction. Trying to get a different perspective from the pack of new motorcycle owners out there who have this instant fix idea that ensures they never spend any cash or time working on their own investments. Then get on groups & forums looking for quick fixes using imported parts from the cottage industries in Singapore or Taiwan. A proper troubleshoot always will begin with the source, diagnosing each system in turn. Most people do quite the opposite and go after the thing you do last in tuning a bike, the carburetor. Thanks.

Great videos! Thank You!. Check the oil question. I thought we supposed to check the oil with the Sportster (2003) on the kick stand?
Great point! Don't overfill it if you have oil on your air filter below your breather you have too much oil in the bike. This will causes a rich condition. Lets less air into your carburetor. And sucking oil. Not Good.. I like half way on my dipstick... And that's why I do it straight up sitting on the bike. Let us know what works for you. Thank you for watching and your sub Craig. awesome rocco ... was wondering do you have any vids on doing a rocker box gasket repair for 1980 s iron head s .. †
Sorry, No I don't .
I wish I knew how to work on my bike like you. Save me a ton of money. My 06 883 sportster won’t idle right. Sounds weird , turns on and run but always sounds like it wants to turn off
Happy to Help, Did you try higher your idle? If you could, send a video so I can hear your bikes idle. to ERocco3964@gmail.com. Thank you for watching and your sub. Kwistoh. Ride safe and have a great day. Take a look. How to higher your idle, ruclips.net/video/N-_00UOa_xk/видео.html
Hey love the videos. By chance is the diaphragm vacuum hose specific to Harley or can I replace it with any auto parts hose?
Standard part you go by your auto parts store. Any questions just ask thank you for your sub. Ride safe and have a great day
Great video’s I’m having trouble finding parts such as the vacuum line assembly from the petcock and carb. It would help a bit if you publish where to find part numbers.
Where do you get your parts like the petcock and vacu lines
Happy to help. Ebay is where I get most of my secondary parts. Or the dealer. Thank you for watching and you sub Zachay. Take a look at this link. www.ebay.com/itm/281943275527?hash=item41a520f807:g:8fEAAOSwXjxegy8c. Ride safe and have a great day let us know how it works out.
Thanks for the quick response. I will try to work on it this weekend. How much would it cost for direct streamed repair instruction?
Happy to help if you could send me a cell number and I'll give you a call. We'll work something out.
Just got my first bike today.a 95 883 Harley sportster, was seeming to idle funny while I was looking at it but was running pretty good and drivable but by the time I got it home it barely wants to start and is running horrible.im sweating and hoping it's not much.its a beautiful bike and I love it already but man this isn't a so good experience so far for my first day owning a Harley lol 😬I hope I can sort it out fairly easy and fast.what your saying sounds like DEAD on what I'm experiencing.
Happy to Help ,i would start with the Petcock. test the Diaphragm for a vacuum leak very important. Here's a video . ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html. This is where I would start. If there is a vacuum leak gas gets into the intake causing a very rough running engine. Let us know how it works out.
Respect the wisdom, Rocco! Thanks for the great content.

Aloha again, I never stated my problem. It is fuel coming from the overflow tube usually after I shutdown the Harley 1200 or a couple of times as it sits running after I a bit of a ride. So, according to your videos, it is either the Carb Needle jet or the Petcock. I have a stock Carb and Petcock. I don't have a vacuum tester for the Petcock, and other way of testing it? I have noticed that I my gas usage (diminishing mpg) has increased over the last year, if this helps. I don't have much of a problem starting the bike when its cold. Are the non-OEM petcock ok? If so, any recommendations? Again, 1995 1200 Xl Sportster. Again, mahalo ("thank you" in Hawaiian) for taking the time and for your informative videos, Steven Maui, HI
Your problem lies in the float needle jet. Needs to be cleaned I usually do it one time if that don't work I'd buy a new one at the dealership $25 for the needle jet, Problem soIved. hope this helps take a look at this video that's all that's wrong with your bike. From your description. ruclips.net/video/VjWzPp5mWec/видео.html. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for watching. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Gm Rocco, 05 delux softail is up and running after cleaning carb fixed choke runs ok but doesn’t idle as smooth as I would like it to?
Should I now adjust the air/fuel mixture screw at bottom of carb ??
Raise the idle if that don't help. Go back in your carburetor and clean the starter jet clean the circuit going up . When you have that carburetor out you'll notice in the rear there's four little holes that's your idle. when you take the starter jet out and remove your air fuel screw. clean it with carb spray. remember how many turns out your air fuel screw is..sometimes you need to it twice. Let. us know how this works out. Test your petcock. Happy to help..Any questions just ask. ..Thank you for watching and your Sub Frank. Hello two wheel Rocco I just did some carb cleaning following your video and I'm definitely no mechanic but did a good job.
However the bike is idling so low now without acceleration or choke that its shutting off. Any ideas on what to do?
See if this helps with your idle. ruclips.net/video/N-_00UOa_xk/видео.html. Let us know how this works out.

@@TwoWheelRocco hi rocc i have a 05 xl 1200 sporster an it has. Gas in the oil i have fixed thd carb but i truned over the engine with the oil filter off trying to get all of the old oil out and i lost my prim on my oil pump. How do i prim it ?
@@tobinchapman4315 Happy to help, fill the bike with oil, halfway on the dipstick remove the plugs and rotate motor they should prime the oil in system. Now your gas problems usually you need to test your Petcock Diaphragm. I'll send a video.ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day. Thank you for watching and your sub Tobin.
Hey Rocco, thanks for all your helpful videos. I have this same model, have some cold start issues so I decided its time to clean the carb. Ive run into some issues.
1. Someone prior to me has stripped one of the bottom bolts, and I'm unable to unthread it with vice grips.
2. I cant access some of the top bolts because my throttle hookup doesnt have enough slack.
Any advice or tips that will help me complete this job on my own vs. Spending $200+ at a shop? Also, my gasket is in worse shape than the one in the video, should i go ahead and replace? I notice some of the other models you've done work on in seperate videos don't have a gasket.
Take a look at this Video. ruclips.net/video/5Q-apn_nupc/видео.html. To get more room to work with, Remove you choke mount 17mm on belt side of bike, and you will have the room to work. I use Grabit to remove stripped screws. Let us know how this works out John.
